(A note of thanks from the Sisters who care for the children in Jaroslaw)
To all our Benefactors,
On behalf of all the Sisters and all the children in the orphanage and school, I wish to thank all of you for
remembering us. The Christmas presents created tremendous joy for all the children! They all needed clothing. Thank
everyone for giving from the heart for the needs of the children, especially these that are the most needy. We are most
grateful for your caring and concern of the children here in the orphanage and school. We give thanks to God for all of
you wonderful people who help us. Our thanks and prayers are constant for you. May God bless all of you!

Brief Reflections of Lent and Easter Traditions in Poland
It was with this ancient Polish
greeting that Easter joy was announced
by our ancestors in Poland to one another
for centuries. Holy Week is filled with
powerful symbols of faith which proclaim
belief in God who is victorious over sin
and death. The Polish experience of Holy
Week encompasses many customs and
traditions that may be somewhat unheard
of by our American counterparts. Certainly
as a priest, I can attest to the fact that the excitement and anticipation
of Easter is much more intense in a Polish-American parish, where
much time and energy is spent decorating an ornate repository for
Holy Thursday, preparing the Lord’s Tomb resplendent with flowers
that resembles his grave in the Jerusalem garden, not to mention the
Rezurekcja - the Resurrection Procession on Easter morning.
As our people come to church carrying their baskets on Holy
Saturday to request the Church’s blessing upon their Easter morning
breakfast, they need little reminder of the importance of visiting the
Tomb of Our Lord. And so we approach his Sepulcher in our Polish
churches, we come with the same reverence and respect we would
have when visiting the remains of a loved one who has just passed
away. Our Polish hearts are touched and moved by the realness of
it all, as we stare in awe at the corpse of Christ with angels standing
guard. We are overwhelmed by the scent of hyacinths and lilies.
We cannot help but be moved with compassion for the Son of God
whose love knew no boundaries, that he had even endured the most
brutal and barbaric form of death man was capable of afflicting on his
fellow man, all in order to save us from the loss of eternal life brought
about by the sin of our first parents.
All of these customs and visual aids remind us that we are
observing this holiest of Christian holidays much in the same way
as our ancestors in Poland did for centuries, and amazingly these
customs have survived the process of assimilation even though they
are removed from their land of origin by thousands of miles. Indeed,
the absence of such traditions would somehow create a void in our
Easter observance.
As members of the Polish Union of America, we are pleased that
the time honored practices of our ancestors, such as the Holy Thursday
pilgrimage to seven churches, święconka (the blessing of baskets), the
Resurrection procession, as well as the Dyngus Day celebrations, are
observed by so many even today. We encourage our members
to continue these traditions and to teach their children and
grandchildren about them so that we can share with them the
true meaning of Easter for many years to come.
Many of us now live in the suburbs, several miles removed
from the parishes where these traditions are most cherished and
loved. As a sign of support, why not return to those parishes
of old Polonia and witness their beauty and meaningfulness.
Your presence will be a sign of support to those who have spent
much time and effort in promoting these cherished customs
that so many people find as a meaningful expression of faith.
It is in this spirit that I, your National Chaplain, extend my
best wishes for an Easter Season filled with the joy and peace
of the Risen Lord! Wesołego Alleluja!
I have been living in the US for almost
20 years, but the memories of my growing
up in Poland are still very vivid, especially
when we talk about religious traditions and
customs. I will mention just a few which
are still practiced there.
Ash Wednesday - a priest would walk
alongside people kneeling in church with
their heads down and he would sprinkle
ashes on top of their heads as a sign of
repentance.
Stations of the Cross on Fridays - most people actually moved
from station to station following a priest and altar servers around the
church. On Sunday afternoons during Lent people would gather for
Gorzkie Żale (Bitter Lamentations), with beautiful, mournful type
singing, helping them to enter deeper into the mystery of Christ’s
suffering.
Holy Saturday was a traditional day for blessing of baskets with
Easter foods, eaten later at the Easter Sunday breakfast. Both Good
Friday and Holy Saturday were most solemn reflective days, with
absolutely no music or dancing. Playing any kind of music or dancing
on those days would have been met with the harshest of criticisms
and even the ruling Communist party would not dare do it.
Easter Vigil was my favorite with a huge ten foot tall bonfire lit
in darkness on a walkway surrounding the church with most people
gathered outside for the fire blessing ceremony. One thing that is
fairly common in the US, I never experienced in Poland - baptizing or
welcoming adults into the Catholic Church. Since almost all people
were baptized Catholic as infants then, there has been simply no need
for it.
Easter Sunday continued with the Mass of the Resurrection
(Rezurekcja) at dawn with a festive procession around the church,
circling it three times, with all church bells joyfully ringing and
“petardy” (small IEDs) making quite a loud noise from time to time.
Easter Monday was a day of Mass obligation. It was also
known as “Smigus Dyngus” (“Lany Poniedziałek”), and the tradition
of teenage boys trying to soak girls with water, usually after the Mass,
was very much alive.
Overall, Lent and Easter in Poland have been teeming with many
religious customs which helped people enter deeper into the mystery
of Christ’s suffering, dying and rising. Catholic Lenten and Easter
traditions in the
U.S. are more
limited, still we
have the most
beautiful
and
meaningful Holy
Week liturgies,
if only we would
choose to fully
partake in their
riches.

Congratulations!
The Polish Union of America is proud
of their member Scott Bylewski, Town of
Clarence Supervisor, for the way he dealt with
the terrible tragedy when Continental Flight
3407 crashed into a home in his town.
Scott is a member of the Sacred Heart of
Jesus Lodge #86 and is a fourth-generation
member of the Polish Union of America. He
was elected a National Director-at-Large in
1996 and continued to serve in that position
until 2003.
We wish to congratulate Scott, and all the
recipients of the AM-POL EAGLE Citizens of
the Year Awards.
Lodge #230, Sw. Wojciecha of Waterford, Michigan will
have their Easter “Swieconka” on April 15, 2009.
