Pope calls synod to discuss families,
divorce and remarriage

12th Street). It will be from 11 am
until dark.
There are children’s

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- The predicament of divorced and remarried Catholics will be a major topic
of discussion when bishops from around the world meet at the Vatican in October 2014. The Vatican
announced Oct. 8 that an extraordinary session of the Synod of Bishops will meet Oct. 5-19, 2014,
to discuss the "pastoral challenges of the family in the context of evangelization." The pope had told
reporters accompanying him on his plane back from Rio de Janeiro in July that the next synod would
explore a "somewhat deeper pastoral care of marriage," including the question of the eligibility of
divorced and remarried Catholics to receive Communion. Pope Francis added at the time that church
law governing marriage annulments also "has to be reviewed, because ecclesiastical tribunals are
not sufficient for this. It is complex, the problem of the pastoral care of marriage." Such problems,
he said, exemplified a general need for forgiveness in the church today.

Tenth Circuit rules for religious freedom and against
Obama’s abortion pill mandate
On Thursday, the Tenth Circuit once again ruled against Obama’s
HHS Mandate that requires many employers to provide abortion
-inducing drugs as part of employee insurance packages. The
Tenth Circuit was the Court of Appeals that ruled against the
abortion pill mandate in the Hobby Lobby case, and it relied on
its previous ruling.

The case decided on Thursday involves Hercules Industries, an
HVAC manufacturer based in Colorado and owned by the
Newland family. To succeed on its claim against the mandate,
Hercules must show that “(1) it is a person protected under [the
Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993]; (2) compliance with
the Regulation would substantially burden its religion; and (3)
HHS cannot show that the Regulation is the least restrictive
means to meet a compelling government interest.” The Tenth
Circuit believes that all three elements will likely be met. Therefore, there was no abuse of discretion by the District Court when
they issued the preliminary injunction, temporarily stopping the
HHS mandate from applying to Hercules Industries.
The case is now back to the District Court, where it will sit until
the Supreme Court decides whether it will hear the Hobby Lobby
case.
According to Matt Bowman, Senior Legal Counsel with Alliance
Defending Freedom:
Every American, including family business owners, should be free
to live and do business according to their faith. In appealing the
district court’s order that halted the mandate against Hercules,
the administration sent a clear message that it wants to force
families to abandon their faith in order to earn a living. That’s
the opposite of religious freedom. The 10th Circuit was right to
uphold the district court’s order and protect the Newland family’s religious liberty at least until the U.S. Supreme Court decides
whether to extend religious freedom to similar families across
the country.
Students will participate in
‘Pro-Life Day of Silent Solidarity’ October 15
Next Tuesday, October 15, students across America will
participate in a day of solidarity to show their respect for
life. The “Pro-Life Day of Silent Solidarity” is an outlet for
students to express their pro-life views without using
words or engaging in arguments. Pro-life students who
will forego speaking on October 15 will also honor with
their silence the members of their generation (including
anyone born after the legalization of abortion on-demand
in America in 1973 with the Supreme Court case Roe v.
Wade) who were never allowed to be born.

SACRED SCRIPTURES FOR THE WEEK
MONDAY
ROM 1:1-7
LK 11:29-32
When my mother was first diagnosed with lung cancer, our family was devastated. After many
weeks of chemotherapy and radiation, she was tested to see if the cancer was still there. The
week before her appointment, she pinned a relic of St. Therese of Lisieux to her clothing and
prayed for her intercession daily.
TUESDAY
ROM 1:16-25
LK 11:37-41
WEDNESDAY ROM 2:1-11
LK 11:42-46
THURSDAY ROM 3:21-30
LK 11:47-54
FRIDAY
2 TM 4:10-17
LK 10:1-9
In keeping with the "shower of roses" that often accompanies the intercession of St. Therese, my
mother encountered roses every day -- sent to her in a bouquet, on a card, smelling their scent in
her room. The tests showed her cancer was gone. We were amazed and overjoyed. Like Naaman
and the leper in this week's readings, we thanked God for the blessing.
SATURDAY
ROM 4:13, 16-18 LK 12:8-12
SUNDAY
EX 17:8-13
A year later, her cancer returned and all the prayers we offered did not save her. We wondered:
Why did the prayers "work" one time and not the other? Did God stop listening? We did not know
what to think.
We did our best to remain faithful. Even in the midst of her pain, my mother continued to pray and
read the Scriptures. Her faithfulness was rewarded in one final way: She died on Good Friday,
going home with Jesus.
2 TM 3:14--4:2
LUKE 18:1-8
SUNDAY BREAKFAST SCHEDULE
Oct 20 - Grupo de Visitacion
Nov 3 - CDA Carne Guisada Meal
November 5, 2013 - 7 AM - 7 PM
The words of St. Paul in the second reading speak to how we were feeling: "If we have died with
him we shall also live with him; if we persevere we shall also reign with him."
Stories of healing in the Bible are wonderful to read, but they can be confusing and challenging
when one's illness is not healed. This lyric in a song written by Wayne Watson was a huge comfort to me at the time of my mother's death: "Home free, eventually, at the ultimate healing we will
be home free." The idea is that when a loved one passes away from illness he or she has experienced the ultimate healing.
God does desire to heal and make us whole, but many times it does not happen the way we think
it should. In these times let us stand with St. Paul and remain faithful. When we do, we stay
planted in the will of God. Christ's suffering has redeemed all human suffering. Uniting our suffering with Jesus' may not take away the pain, but it can bring meaning to our journey.
QUESTIONS:
Have you or someone you know ever experienced a miraculous healing? Have you or someone
you know endured long suffering? If so, how has this impacted your faith?
SCRIPTURE TO BE ILLUSTRATED:
"If we have died with him we shall also live with him; if we persevere we shall also reign with
him." -- 2 Timothy 2:11-12
5 Noviembre, 2013 - 7 AM - 7 PM
