HYMNS: Gathering: I Heard the Voice of Jesus #460 Preparation: Lord, Whose Love in Humble Service #623 Communion: Ubi Caritas #337; Taste and See #341 Recessional: Celtic Alleluia: Sending Forth #382 A Note from the Pastor Fr. Michael Fragoso This week the readings invite us to consider humility. It’s a problem for a lot of people who think they are entitled to all sorts of things just because they walk in the room. There’s the old story of an American tourist who visited the museum at Beethoven’s birthplace and saw the piano on which the famous composer worked. She cajoled the guard (with the help of a “lavish tip”) into letting her play a few bars of music. He agreed. After tinkling out the opening of the Moonlight Sonata she wondered aloud if many great pianists make the pilgrimage there to play on that venerable instrument. The guard replied, “ Not really. Paderewski (the famous Polish pianist, composer and one time Prime Minister of Poland) was here a few years ago and he said he was not worthy to touch it.” Let’s look at a few things we do everyday which may be a sin against humility. Not greeting people. It’s something we reserve for only those we know. Jesus would say, “Don’t the tax collectors and prostitutes do the same?” We should greet everyone we meet because of the human dignity endowed by their Creator. Impatience at being made to wait. I used to be very impatient but then I realized that I had to make people wait, mostly because of emergencies but sometimes because I was late. Now when I am made to wait I offer it up as penance for having made others wait, and for the health and well being of our parish. It’s still difficult to wait but now it has a purpose. Road rage. Do I own the road? Is it my private estate? That seems to be the attitude of the 5,728,975 (more or less) drivers in the State of New Jersey. What ever happened to courtesy and patience? Here’s another statistic: according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NJ ranks seventh in the country for safe drivers! “Unbelievable!” you might say. Something to be proud of? With a little more humility, patience and courtesy we can do even better. “Snowbirds” beware, Florida ranks worse in “careless driving”. What is the solution to surliness, querulousness, and road rage? A good dose of humility and where better to start than the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Luke 14:13 -14 We have a difficult time with the concept of giving without expecting something in return. Even when we give to charity we often want something in return – a raffle ticket, a dinner, or a chance to play golf. Yet, as Christian stewards we need to remember that the true reward for our giving awaits us in heaven.
