394 Tenney Avenue • Campbell, Ohio 44405 • (330)755-4141 • (330)755-1367 (fax) • (330)755-3633 (Spanish) A Parish of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Youngstown The Mission of Christ, the Good Shepherd Parish is to celebrate the Sacraments, share our heritage and traditions, and support one another in living and sharing our faith in this community and throughout the world. July 7, 2013 MISSION Today’s first reading from Isaiah was occasioned by the return of the Jewish people from exile. The prophet visualizes the Holy City as a mother welcoming her children home. The people may now look forward to prosperity and comfort. In this postPentecostal season, the Church attributes this sense of fulfillment to the Holy Spirit. Paul, on the other hand, speaks of “the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.” It is the single thing of which he will boast, for it is the means by which we are recreated. The comfort and prosperity promised in the first reading are here transformed by a deepening of the Christian paradox. Luke’s Gospel describes the calling and the mission of “seventy-two others,” who are commissioned to bring in the “harvest.” The number is symbolic, since according to Jewish tradition the number of nations in the world is seventy-two. This then is a universal mission, a catholic mission to all the world. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. This Sunday we recognize those who have graduated, in any way, but especially those who have graduated from high school. I was glad to be part of the Baccalaureate and Commencement for Campbell Memorial High School, and the Baccalaureates for Ursuline and Cardinal Mooney High Schools. And, I congratulate all of you, who attend a number of other schools for your accomplishments. I impart God’s blessing upon all of you, as you begin the next phase in your life. Now, after a couple of weeks of writing this column, the question is: Do I continue writing it? And, if yes, about what? Well, I do intend to have a submission weekly (at least most of the time anyways). But, about what? Well, I hope to continue to comment on the events and happenings of our parish. And, obviously, the questions that affect us the most are about our continued transition from previous parishes and ways of operating to our new way of operating as Christ, the Good Shepherd Parish. I intend to keep you informed. Please, let me know what you would like to hear about. In my previous assignment at St. Charles, I had a column. In it, I answered a number of questions about the faith. Why do we do this? What is the Church’s teaching on that? etc. I would like to do the same with this column. So, as well, please, let me know what questions about the faith you would like answered. They may be questions that you have yourself. They may be questions that others have asked, and you’re not sure how to respond. Whatever they are, let me know. I think that an essential part of any community is communication (and that a most destructive force to community is rumor). Again, I believe that communication is key to building our community. I hope that this column helps us. Finally, a note about daily Mass: as you may have noticed, daily Mass has been moved to 8:30am. I thank everyone who let me know their preference. And, I am sorry that there is not a time that accommodates everyone. I pray that all of us will continue to keep the Eucharist at the center of our lives. God bless you, Fr. Conoboy Felicidades Graduandos! What is more delightful than the voice of the Lord calling to us? How willing are we to move outside of our comfort zone and consider a new ministry in the Church, whether at the liturgy, on a social committee or in the pastoral work of caring for the poor? PARISH SACRIFICAL GIVING FOR 6/30 and 7/7 will be posted 7/14 Please make your checks payable to Christ, the Good Shepherd they are difficult to cash when made payable to other churches MASS ATTENDANCE FOR 6/30 and 7/7 will be posted 7/14 We want to send out a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who helped with and supported our festival. The success of the festival depends on the help involved and the support of those who could not help. So many of our parishioners who could not physically help did send contributions in the form of money, gifts for the Chinese Auction, donations of supplies needed and through the second collection. To the captains and workers of the booths, those who helped with set-up and take-down, the clean-up committee, which did a great job. If we have forgotten to mention you please know you are in our prayers and God knows who you are. Special THANKS to the Wasko Funeral Home & Allied Waste. Wasko provided us with the festival tickets & Allied Waste provided all of our trash containers and trash pick-up free of charge. We Thank God every day for the generous people that helped to make this festival a success. May he continue to bless each and everyone of you.
