The readings this Sunday powerfully confront us regarding the necessity to have an attitude of gratitude. We live in an age of entitlement
where many in society expect and demand that others accommodate
them. Matthew Kelly wrote in his book Rediscover Catholicism that
three prevailing philosophies permeate our culture: individualism, hedonism and minimalism. So many people insist, “What’s in it for me?”
“If it feels good do it!” and “I will only to do the minimum of what is
expected of me!”
In the first reading Naaman the Assyrian returned to Elisha the
prophet to acknowledge “there is no God in all the earth, except in
Israel.” Naaman did so out of gratitude for the healing from leprosy he
received. In the Gospel there were ten lepers who pleaded with Jesus
to heal them of their disease. Jesus instructed them to show themselves the priests as required by the
Mosaic Law. On their way they realized they were healed of their malady. One of them, a foreigner and
a Samaritan returned to Jesus to thank him for the miracle of healing. The other nine did not return to
thank him.
We live in marvelous country where each of us is truly blessed by the Lord. Each and every day I invite
us all to record ten things we are grateful for and to spend some time in prayer thanking Jesus for our
blessings. We need to have an attitude of gratitude.
Las lecturas de este domingo nos enfrentan a la necesidad de tener una actitud de gratitud. Vivimos
en una era de derecho en que muchos en la sociedad espera y exige que los demás los traten como tal.
Matthew Kelly escribió en su libro, Redescubriendo el catolicismo sobre tres filosofías predominantes

En la primera lectura Naamán de Asirio volvió al profeta Eliseo para reconocer que "no hay Dios
en toda la tierra, sino en Israel." Naamán lo hizo en agradecimiento por la curación de la lepra que
recibió. En el Evangelio había diez leprosos que le pidieron a Jesús que los sanara de su enfermedad. Jesús les dio instrucciones de mostrarse a los sacerdotes como lo requiere la ley. En su camino se
dieron cuenta que fueron sanados de su enfermedad. Uno de ellos, un extranjero y un samaritano regresó a Jesús para darle las gracias por el milagro de la curación. Los otros nueve no volvieron a darle
las gracias.
Vivimos en el maravilloso país donde cada uno de nosotros es verdaderamente bendecido por el
Señor. Les invito a todos a que cada día escriban diez cosas de las cuales están agradecidos y pasen
tiempo en oración agradeciendo a Jesús por sus bendiciones. No olviden que tenemos que tener una
actitud de gratitud.

Stocking the Pantry
Our parish’s monthly food collection is a vital and consistent source
of food for the local food pantry operated by Family Assistance
Ministries (FAM.) The food collection takes place on the 4th Sunday
of each month and is delivered to FAM’s pantry by parish volunteers. Empty grocery bags are available on the 3rd Sunday with a list
of needed items. Pick one up next weekend (October 20-21) and
return it the following week (October 27-28.) All are invited to assist
with the food collection, including families and teens. For more
information, or to get involved with this initiative, contact Dixie Gillivan at 361-0792.
Work of Our Hands Ministry
Our parish prayer shawl ministry, Work of Our Hands, will meet
on Thursday, October 17 at 9am in McGowan Hall - Room E. Work
of our Hands brings the traditional art of knitting (and crocheting)
into a prayerful ministry that reaches out to those in our community
in need of God’s comfort and solace. Although the ministry gathers
every third Thursday for fellowship, attendance is not required to be
a part of this work. Prayer shawls can be created anywhere. If you
love to knit or crochet perhaps this is the right time to check out this

Free Health Counseling
Talk with a Mission Hospital Nurse on Wednesday, October 16 from
5 to 6:30pm in a private setting regarding your health questions and
concerns including nutritional counseling, coping with life changes,
blood pressure counseling, and resources for you and your family.
There is no charge for this service and no appointment is necessary.
Just drop by Room E in McGowan Hall. For more information contact Maria Ayala, Mission Hospital nurse at 364-1400, x 5063.
Liturgy of the Word for Children
This program takes place during the 9am Mass. Children 4 years
(pre-k) through grade 4 are sent from
the main assembly to a nearby space where they celebrate the Liturgy
of the Word in a simplified, yet equivalent format. Children in grades
1-4 return at the offertory. Pre-k and kindergarteners remain with
their leaders until the end of Mass when they are picked up in the
school kindergarten classroom by a parent. Pre-registration is not
required to attend.
This ministry currently has openings for leaders and teen assistants.
Leaders must have a love of both the Liturgy and an understanding
of effective communication with children, and be willing to serve on
a rotating basis every 4-6 weeks. Training is provided. Please contact

October is Respect Life Month and in keeping with that OLF is having a baby shower! There will be a baby crib at the back of the church
where you can put your baby gift. The items collected will be taken
to the Birth Choice Center, a pregnancy resource center, where they
will then be given to the women who have chosen to give birth to
their baby and who are now attending new baby parenting classes.
Items needed by Birth Choice are: diapers, baby clothes, baby toys,
and baby blankets. Let's help these new mothers and their babies get
a great start to their new lives!
Back to Basics
If the last time you studied about your Catholic faith was as a
teenager, then it is time to update your knowledge. Join with other
parishioners as Fr. William leads easy and informal sessions about
the topics listed below. Every week is independent, so you need
not attend every week to benefit. Fr. William will offer the same
sessions on Wednesdays and Saturdays, as indicated. Wednesday
sessions will be held in Room A and Saturday sessions in Room E of
McGowan Hall. Bring your questions and bring a friend.

It’s Socktober!
Did you know that socks are the number one requested item at
homeless shelters across the United States? Clean, dry socks provide
comfort and can help keep feet healthy. The Social Awareness Leadership Team (aka SALT) is collecting socks throughout the month
of October. These socks will go to the homeless in our area. Please
drop off new men’s socks in the receptacle in the ocean vestibule.
