We have been fortunate that a number of our biggest customers have placed significant orders throughout Q1 and Q2 whilst we have also seen a positive development in export business. The second half of the year promises further development of our Mobility and Commercial Divisions. However, as we are near the maximum level of labour flexibility we are expanding our direct workforce to increase manufacturing capacity. This will ensure that we meet customers’ expectations and that lead times are competitive. The additional resources will also ensure that the implementation of the PALFINGER Production System and commitment to our NVQ Programmes are not jeopardised through limitation of resources. As a company we continue to make incremental improvements to our business. At the heart of this change is our commitment to the recruitment, retention and development of our teams. This investment has the full support of PALFINGER and probably signifies the greatest period of training, development and learning within PALFINGER Ratcliff’s history. The company has also been proactive in the recruitment of the best people to add new skills and experience to our team and some of these are highlighted throughout the newsletter. 25 YEARS AND ABOVE The employees who have shaped our history. This is an approach that the management team and company has embraced, particularly with regard to the production facility where we see improvements supported by PALFINGER ranging from the development of Welding Competence to Assembly Flow Lines. Hopefully, many of you will have an opportunity to see first-hand the improvements that we have made during our Open Day’s on the 17th and 18th September 2014. On the commercial side we have enjoyed great success through intensive collaboration and project management with our sister company PALFINGER MBB (Germany). This collaboration allowed us to develop two Level Ride Retractable solutions for Brakes’ (Grocery & Fresh Food Suppliers to Catering Businesses) retrofit and new vehicle investment programmes. Finally, I would like to take the opportunity to thank the team at the National Parts Centre (NPC). As communicated previously, the NPC will be relocated to Welwyn Garden City resulting in the closure of the Garforth facility in September 2014. Despite this the team have continued to work tirelessly to support customers in challenging conditions while also assisting the transfer of materials and processes. From Welding to Finance, Engineering, Customer Services and Despatch, a number of our employees have shown their dedication, hard work and ability to adapt to current market requirements to make our business successful. This length of service is exceptional for most companies nowadays. Many argue that employee loyalty is not what it used to be and numerous studies have put employee loyalty at an all-time low. In fact, ninety-one percent of Millennials (born between 1977-1997) expect to stay in a job for less than three years, according to the New York based Future Workplace. This information came from their survey called “Multiple Generations @ Work” with 1,189 employees and 150 managers. That means Millennials would have 15 – 20 jobs over the course of their working lives! At PALFINGER Ratcliff we create a challenging work environment where employees are encouraged to put forward their ideas for product development and service improvement. Our longest serving personnel: Employee FROM THE LEFT IN THE BACK, GERRY, BILL, JEFF, CHARLIE, MICK, STEVE, JOHN AND DAVE. Such values have created a friendly and caring company which has allowed us to retain so much invaluable experience. Combining this experience with our newly recruited talent will hopefully provide a competitive edge which will provide us with an opportunity to add another 50 years to our company history while maintaining an environment that people want to be part of.“ WAYNE HARMER, MD PALFINGER RATCLIFF 10 Michael Finch Ian Taylor Patricia Collings John Bonner Phil Taylor Bill Stanton Janet McLay Clive Scandrett Barry Lynn Michael Hillier David Byrne Jeffrey Harrison Roy Ashman Geraldine Myles Charles Evans Stephen Foster Muhammed B. High calibre professionals in areas such as internal and external Sales, Finance, Procurement, Production Planning, Manufacturing and Engineering have been recruited to further enhance our knowledgeable and highly engaged workforce. In line with PALFINGER’s commitment to “Lifetime Excellence”, greater focus is being put on constant process measurement and improvement, which demonstrates our passion for top performance. Celebrating our 50th Anniversary in 2014, the company continues to attract and retain local and international talent, forming relationships with high profile institutions such as the University of Hertfordshire in the UK and the University of Hamburg in Germany. In Engineering, the recruits are students on a placement year from the University of Hertfordshire as well as two professionals with Master’s in Industrial Engineering Management from the University of Hamburg. Being part of a large corporation such as PALFINGER AG offers major benefits such as the ongoing intercultural and intercompany exchange of best practices, providing our employees with a challenging work environment which encourages open mindedness, cooperation and the ability to change and innovate constantly. „i’ve spent most of my working life here, I’ve known this place since I was a kid, it’s ingrained in me. I know the products and the systems I use inside out, so it feels comfortable“ JAMES JACKSON, Spare Parts Controller James Jackson has worked for PALFINGER Ratcliff for thirteen years. During his time with the company, he has worked in various roles has which has enabled him to gain a broad knowledge of the spare parts business, despatch and Passenger production. He is part of the team managing the project to move the National Parts Centre from Leeds to Welwyn Garden City. His father, John Jackson (who passed away five years ago), had worked for PALFINGER Ratcliff for thirty two years and James used to attend company events as a child.. James was born and raised in Welwyn Garden City, where he still lives. After finishing his course in Mechanics & Body Repair from Oaklands College, he started his first job at Roffey calibrating and repairing radiators and ultrasound equipment. Having been always interested in, and good at, mechanics, James went on to a second course at Oaklands College where he studied Electrical and TV Repair. In mid 2013 James was invited to join the PPS Team (PALFINGER Production System), a long-term project for the continuous implementation of Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement methods. Having been recently promoted into the role of Spare Parts Controller, his responsibilities are to liaise on customer orders, sales and the restructuring of the area in WGC where the National Parts Centre will be based as from September 2014. “The move of the NPC will allow us to have all services, products and spare parts consolidated under one roof and provide parts for production and spares sales, with the aim of reducing lead-times to customers”. Apart from a more consolidated service and despatch operation, this initiative will have the side benefit of reducing our carbon footprint, with deliveries leaving from a single warehouse. On Monday 28th April, our Engineering and Quality Team took a factory tour at the Vauxall plant in Luton and had the opportunity to review the production line, the skilled workforce and the modern equipment used, such as the 92 working robots in the body shop, which is 70% automated. Another area of major interest, the “Safety Observation Tour”, where the vehicles are driven up to 80 miles and exposed to different weather conditions, is linked with the “Quality Audit Area”. There all problem solving actions are applied based on internal customer reviews As a major employer in the Hertfordshire region with 1,171 staff, Vauxhall produces 67,000 units a year in two shifts producing „LIFETIME EXCELLENCE DESCRIBES OUR CORE BRAND VALUES OF EFFICIENCY, RELIABILITY AND INNOVATION.“ WOLFGANG PILZ, CMO PALFINGER Engineering Continuous Improvement Training In March and April, the whole Engineering team participated in a two week long in-house training initiative. The ‘Finite Element Analysis’ (FEA) training has allowed more Engineers to interrogate ‘Computer Aided Design’ (CAD) models and understand the structural loading limitations of component parts and assembly models. “The FEA tool is extremely powerful and helps support structural hand calculations for improved accuracy and is an invaluable tool to reduce prototype testing time”, said Tony Turner, our Head of Engineering The FEA tool also gives us the ability to maximise the strength of components in the areas where there are high stresses 14 and eliminate material in areas of low stress, ensuring that material costs are kept as cost effective as possible and ultimately providing our customers with competitively priced products that are safe, durable and designed to meet PALFINGER Ratcliff’s Lifetime Excellence quality criteria. Torsion Bar Supply “The challenge” We started the new year with the shock news that a key supplier was in administration and could not supply torsion bars. For us this is the same as manufacturing a car with no steering wheel! The pressure was really on us to ensure we reacted quickly and responsibly, ensuring our customers operational businesses were impacted as little as possible. performs at its optimum level within, sometimes, very highly stressed and harsh environmental conditions. Following many detailed technical specification checks and with the clock ticking, we finally received the bars for approval. Our Testing and Development department was prepared and had a purpose built testing rig ready to swing into action. Our first step was to safeguard our customers, this meant quickly gaining control of current production, NPC spares stock and WIP and closely balancing the outstanding order book with the operational requirements in the field. Unfortunately for us this meant initially freezing our production build and not accepting any orders until we could be sure we could fulfil the requirement. This was a difficult decision to make, however the protection of the operational business of our loyal customers is paramount and our PALFINGER values ensure integrity and transparency at all times. The bars were first inspected and measured dimensionally, load tested to ensure the output torque was correct, hardness tested and finally fatigue tested. The fatigue testing is the longest quality check process we carry out on torsion bars - this is to ensure the bars can maintain a high performance with no major reduction in torque output. The initial samples were very encouraging from two of the three suppliers and the bars actually surpassed the fatigue life of the previous ones significantly. Tests were carried out on further samples to ensure that we had batch continuity and once we had confirmation, These we then placedshow ordersthe forworldwide substantialappeal volumes. articles To minimise any delay in the supply chain, whilst looking for a new supplier, we secured the raw material that fed the torsion bar manufacturer. This was quite a challenge in itself and required several meetings to agree a significant financial investment and agree an immediate plan to secure all available stock. The outcome was successful and we now knew that once a manufacturer was found we were in a position to supply the raw material to them, minimising lead times and importantly ensuring material consistency. The next step was then to utilise the PALFINGER global network connections to find quality global manufacturers of torsion bars, who could not only require large quantities of the vast range of bars that we supply, to a specification they had never produced before, but also to deliver special samples direct to us within a very short lead time! It was of paramount importance to us that the supplier we chose would provide a range of torsion bar sizes that would equal or surpass the expectations and performance of the torsion bars we had used for over 20 years, so face to face visits were crucial to start the partnership process. We narrowed down the choice to three potential suppliers, and began the quality approval process; producing a top quality torsion bar is far from straightforward, there are huge technical requirements to ensure the bar of our products: from the UK, to the World! Once the first batches of bars started to arrive, the pressure started to lift, however it was crucial that logistically we prioritise the allocation of bars, which we believed we achieved with minimal disruption. Whilst this was an experience that we absolutely would not want to face again, the silver lining to this challenge is that we now have several torsion bars suppliers to ensure the supply line will not be compromised in the future, and we have a component that is of a higher quality than previously. . We have also used this as an opportunity to improve our ‘Quality Controlling Processes’ so that we now monitor our suppliers businesses far more frequently and work much more closely with them in partnership to ensure quality of supply. Unfortunately this has meant a price increase in torsion bars from our new suppliers of over 40% on some bar sizes, as the manufacturers capitalise on the knowledge that this is a highly skilled process, where only a limited amount of suppliers can actually produce the bars to the required size and quality. At RATCLIFF PALFINGER we have absorbed as much of the increase as possible and not capitalised on the situation . We hope that our customers will notice the improved quality and consistency that our new torsion bars provide. 15 > INVESTMENT | UPLIFTING NEWS UPLIFTING NEWS | SOCIAL < NEW SHOT BLASTING - OWNERSHIP OF ALL PROCESSES Further investment has recently been made in improving our internal process with the acquisition of a new shot blasting machine, installed at the beginning of July. our Production Manager André Prange set off to put the new system in place.
