Pride, Tradition, Excellence. For all. Forever. October 2015 The Wildcat Tales Harleton Independent School District Newspaper Wildcats Turn Over New Leaf, Start District 1-0 By Lindsey McClung Ten seniors suit up every Friday night. Adorned in green and gold from head to toe, they lead the team out of the locker room and onto the field, ready to face their opponent. Each week it’s the same routine as they line up across the field, arm in arm, waiting for the coin to be tossed and the ball to be put into play. While their high school careers will soon be ending, their focus is on the task in front of them, a goal they set for their-selves day one: to be district champs. “I am very excited to be in my last district run,” senior Cody Fregia said. “District is the start of a brand new season, so hopefully we can turn it around and eventually end up with a spot in the playoffs.” After starting the season 1-4, the Wildcats faced the Hawkins Hawks on homecoming night, as they geared up for a “new season” and a chance to start fresh with the district line-up. The Wildcats didn’t disappoint as they defeated the Hawks 17-14, starting their district run off with a 1-0 record. While their new mentality has them looking forward to the weeks ahead, this team has changed more than just their mental game. Under the direction of new athletic director and head coach Terry Ward, the Wildcats have undergone some alterations to provide the team with more options on the field. Coach Ward has brought a fresh, new style to the Wildcats team and the team is soaking up all the knowledge he’s got. “Coach Ward believes in us and has high hopes for our team,” Jordan Tingle said. “He’s a good coach who knows what he’s doing; we just have to go out there and execute.” As the season continues and the boys prepare for the teams ahead, their eyes are set on the same prize as the first day of practice: to become district champions and play their way into the next round. FEATURE pg 2 HHS Students lead SYATP for Peers By Hunter Wright With a theme of “United in Prayer,” See You at the Pole 2015 centered around just that. Acts 1:14 which says “they all joined together constantly in prayer” was the theme verse. Approximately fifty students and faculty that gathered had opportunities to get in groups and pray for their school, their friends, and their teachers, but not before being led through scripture and songs by their fellow classmates. Ruger Green and myself lead the students in singing “10,000 Reasons” then Faith Earle, Ruger, and Zackery Williamson shared scriptures. The gospel was shared and students were left thinking about their relationships with God. After a cold 2014 SYATP, we weren’t sure what to expect but God amazed us by providing perfect weather with an incredible sunrise to start our day. “SYATP was a good opportunity for thanking God for the blessing we have in HISD to keep Jesus in our school and our community,” HS Spanish teacher Maestra Cunningham said. Superintendent’s Corner A Word from Dr. Coleman Wow! This year seems to be passing quickly. I can’t believe we are already into the month of October. Halloween will be here soon, then Thanksgiving and Christmas before you can have time to get your presents ready. I don’t know if it’s that time is moving more swiftly or that I’m just getting older. Surely the clock is just ticking faster than it used to. I would like to thank you all for allowing us to have a part in your child’s life. I know I speak on behalf of the other Harleton ISD staff members when I tell you it is an honor and a privilege that we don’t take lightly. We wish to work in partnership with you to insure that we help every child reach his/her individual potentials. We will soon be entering into a very busy time of the year. Activities will be taking place for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. There will also be a lot of activities taking place in the schools. We hope you will join us as often as you can and attend these events. As you are aware, all of our campuses have implemented a new schedule that creates opportunities for teachers to analyze student data and plan for personalized instruction for each and every student in their classes. Our district was also chosen to be one of the pilot districts to implement the Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS), the state’s new teacher evaluation system, and this system is much more rigorous and robust in helping our teachers to set goals for improvement. WINSdays, as the Wednesday morning altered schedule has been entitled, allow our teachers to work on both of these activities. By doing so, our teachers will be able to improve the instruction taking place in the classrooms and, in turn, the performance and achievement of each of our students. We are also very proud to announce that our district has been named one of the 75 finalists for a grant provided by Raise Your Hand Texas. This grant deals specifically with Blended Learning, the marriage of the traditional school and virtual schooling. We are very excited to have this opportunity and feel that it will be a benefit for our district. I’m very proud of our school, and I’m committed to remaining proud of our school. Once again, I appreciate your allowing us to be a part of your child’s life. Go Wildcats! Entertainment pg 21 Movie Reviews Adventures of Willy the Wildcat The Intern By Callie Rice This past weekend I went and saw The Intern with my sister. I definitely recommend that you go see this movie, because it had parts that were funny, parts that were inspiring, and parts that would make you cry in less than two seconds. The Intern is about a senior citizen who finds a flier for a senior internship program; he goes and interviews for the program and ends up being assigned to the CEO of the company. At first Jules (Anne Hathaway) isn’t so sure about Ben (Robert DeNiro) stepping in to be her intern, but over time they become good friends. I would give this movie 5 stars because there were so many turning points and it never failed to keep me interested. War Room By Caleb Baxter The movie War Room is about a woman named Elizabeth (Priscilla Shirer) who is having trouble with her marriage. She is a realestate agent and her life is changed when she meets a new client named Miss Clara (Karen Abercromie). Miss Clara uses her wisdom and life experiences to help Elizabeth through her marital problems, and does this by showing her the power of prayer. I would give this movie 5 stars because it had a great story line, lots of humorous moments, and it shows that prayer is the answer to all problems. “Willy goes skydiving” by junior Zach Wallace Joke Corner Q.
