I a l w a y s t h o u g h t the church door would remain open to anyone." "There is a clear need for m e m bers t o raise their level o f giving significantly," t h e R e v . Daniel Hawthorn wrote. "Membership entails committing a realistic part o f your income for church work." T h e letter a l s o tells m e m b e r s t h e y s h o u l d i m p r o v e t h e i r p r a y e r life, increase their Bible reading a n d b e m o r e diligent in telling o t h e r s a b o u t t h e i r f a i t h , The Daily Telegraph of London reported. Soooooo Most of h i s parishioners, at Belhelvie C h u r c h in A b e r d e e n shire, criticized t h e notion. " T h e church door should be open to a n y o n e at a n y time. T h e church i s threatening u s b y saying w ec a n remain m e m b e r s s o long a s w e OUT" what d oy o u think? I think Pastor Hawthorn w a s having a b a d day, b u t I think Pastor H a w t h o r n a l s o h a s a point. There i s a n old a d a g e t o the effect that n o o n e cleans his fish before he catches them. People don't come to church because they are all filleted a n d r e a d y t o s e r v e . Once w h e n s o m e religious types w e r e criticizing J e s u s f o r h a n g i n g with " s c u m " (New Living Translation, Matthew 9:9-13),-Jesus said, "Healthy people don't h e e d a doctor - si c k people d o . "T h e n h e s a i d , " F o r I h a v e c o m e t o call n o t t h o s e w h o think t h e y a r e righteous, but those w h o know they are sinners." So, o n o n ehand the church is a hospital forsick people and a h a v e n f o r s i n n e r s . B u t it i s a l s o a place to g o to grow a n d g e t in- volved in serving God and others. S o m e t i m e s I think what Pastor H a w t h o r n t h o u g h t b u t in t h e interests of "self-preservation" and the Spirit o f love a n d p e a c e I would s a y it l i k e t h i s : " L e t u s h o l d t i g h t l y without wavering to the hope w e affirm f o r G o d c a n b e trusted t o keep h i spromise.
