Sticks, Stones, Broken Bones is a wordless, shadow puppet comedy for all ages from Montreal, Canada. Mr Bunk presents a series of delicate, intricate comic sketches with his shadow puppets. Using a minimum of language in the show, his elaborate contraptions that generate the shadows fascinate, while his surreal cartoon shadows will delight you. 4 Sticks, Stones, Broken Bones transports children and adults alike into a giddy, funny dream world, a shadowy, bent take on Warner Bros’ wackiness. Flying ninjas, UFO abductions and brain transplants. In each scene the audience is invited behind the visual trickery to witness the making of the shadow puppet melodramas. Excellent for limited-English speaking audiences. General adult audiences will also enjoy the show. “He takes the viewer into a childlike world of simple beauty and quirky tales...the audience was mesmerised to the very end. His visual storytelling is a treat and his imagination is glorious...you can’t help but be captivated. Four stars.” Adelaide Advertiser Warnings: Some scenes may frighten very young children. Recommended age is seven years plus. Age: Families but not exclusively. 5 360 2013 The Cube Wodonga Allstars 360 ALLSTARS is a phenomenal theatrical performance exploring all forms of rotation. Boasting a stellar cast, including world champion athletes, world class dancers and world renowned musicians, the production connects the street with the elite to deliver a radical urban circus. A performance like no other, 360 ALLSTARS reinvents the traditional circus by presenting contemporary performance styles instead of conventional circus art forms. Replace acrobats with break-dancers, substitute a basketball freestyler in place of a 6 juggler, swap the unicyclist for a BMX flatlander, and throw in a Roue Cyr artist and you get an exhilarating circus performance, like nothing you have seen before. And with live looping plus live music from master musician, Gene Peterson, 360 ALLSTARS is as aurally exciting as it is visually astounding. Showcasing some of Australia’s best performers, alongside celebrated international artists from UK, Europe and United States, 360 ALLSTARS is a revolutionary production that will leave you dizzy with excitement. Performed by Melbourne comedian, satirist, broadcaster and DJ Fiona Scott–Norman, Disco is hilarious, informed, scathing and is basically the An Inconvenient Truth of electronic dance music. Taking in hip-hop, disco and partner dancing, clubbing, white supremacy and drunken street violence, Disco elegantly and articulately concludes that 10 the world’s been going to hell in a hand basket since everyone stopped touching each other on the dance floor. Disco explores the big issues in contemporary society - is street violence caused by electronic dance music? Is it coincidence that aggression’s been on the rise since partner dancing went the way of good manners? And how come songs used to be written about the moon, and now it’s all ‘hos’ and ‘bitches’? Disco is directed by Tim Ferguson (ex-Doug Anthony Allstars and Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush). As you’d expect, the show is fearless and funny. Friday, July 5 at 8pm 70 minutes (no interval) Enquiries: (02) 6022 9311 Cost: Adult $22 Member/concession $18 Age and warnings! Appeals particularly to a 30-plus crowd, or anyone who suspects that modern music is “crap”, but doesn’t want to say it out loud for fear of sounding old. Uses words of more than two syllables. 11 2013 The Cube Wodonga Shaun Parker & Company Happy As Larry dynamic, playful and beautifully layered new dance work which investigates the elusive nature of human happiness. Created by award-winning choreographer Shaun Parker, this powerful performance combines an intoxicating, free-flowing mix of ballet, break-dance, acrobatics and highly physical contemporary dance. The cast of characters is developed from the Enneagram, a psychological system that maps nine personality types: The perfectionist; the giver; the performer; 12 the tragic romantic; the observer; the devil’s advocate; the optimist; the boss; and the mediator – all rich inspiration for Shaun Parker’s insightful creativity. Set to a vibrant electro/acoustic score by Nick Wales and Bree van Reyk, the performers bring fun and danger to the fore in this innovative and moving dance work. This project has been made possible by the New South Wales Government through Arts NSW. Age: Eight years plus. Warnings: Fog and smoke effects. He likes going to Bunnings to look at things he could make if they were around to fix them. It’s the ultimate man-shed. Two acres of timber, tools and trellises, guaranteed to make your man-ovaries ache. It’s a fantasy supermarket where dreams and wobbly bookshelves are made. Perhaps this is Bunnings’ great, dark secret: no one there knows what the hell they’re doing. It is the perfect place to wander around and feel like you’ve got the skills and materials to nail your s*#t together. Harley Breen has two brothers, they’re both Warnings: Some mild coarse language. 15 2013 The Cube Wodonga “A comical visual feast which simply has to be seen to be believed.” Artshub Squaring The Wheel Image: David Wyatt Thursday, September 12 10.30am and 1.30pm 90 minutes (no interval) Enquiries: (02) 6022 9311 Cost: Adult $12 Student/concession/ child $8 16 When an eccentric misfit meets a strange world of contraptions, everything turns into a challenging and surprising discovery. These and other world mysteries are revealed in a quirky and heart-warming story of a search for finding one’s place. Squaring The Wheel is a theatrical stage extravaganza with a comical and physical language. Did you ever wonder how a vacuum cleaner and ironing board can help a man with his hat? Or how a broom finds itself making up part of a band? Or how eggs can walk or records play without a record player? Squaring The Wheel brings together circus skills, puppetry, magic, wacky mechanisms, unexpected music and audience participation in a set full of delightfully impractical contraptions. Age: Families and schools. Company and producer Jens Altheimer 17 Everything Must Go Turn off the main road and follow the gravel road up the hill. Nancy Browne is having a garage sale. There will be treasure like you can’t imagine. Like you really can’t imagine. Eccentric and reclusive, Nancy Browne has lived in the same house, the same Tasmanian valley all her life, but now the valley is changing — farms are being sold and city people are moving in bringing with them new ideas and new ways. And now the farm has been sold. A developer has bought it and is going to create a suburb on it, Perfect Ponds. The wider world has encroached and Nancy has 18 to make sense of it. She also has to move house. Directed by three-time Barry Award nominee Damian Callinan and performed by Rachel Leary, Everything Must Go is a comedic and poignant portrayal of a misfit finding her way. Set in Tasmania’s Huon Valley the show explores the mixing of subcultures that occurs as city folk move into rural areas. It centres around one character, Nancy Browne, whose family has been living on the same farm for years, but now, they (she) must go. Charming and odd, Nancy draws out family stories from the items she is selling in her garage sale, as well as highlighting her own take on the world. She tells stories of the valley where she lives, her neighbours and the changes that are taking place. Hilarious, ridiculous and very touching, this is a fabulously unique Australian character.
