Message to Our Members Exceeding Customer Expectations (Give ‘em the Pickle!) Expectation – what a jam packed word! Defined as “the act or state of expecting: anticipation,” expectations are everywhere. Growing up, our parents had expectations of us. As consumers, we have expectations of the businesses we patronize. As business owners, success ultimately rests on our ability to meet and even better, exceed, our customer’s expectations. So what does it take to exceed your customer’s expectations? According to Kirk Kazanjian in “Driving Loyalty,” it’s about providing exceptional performance. Kazanjian says we have to “learn how to think differently, engage your workforce more effectively, lead with empathy, deliver dazzling customer service, market effectively online and off, and let customers fuel your company’s growth in order to generate a powerful bottom line.” When you exceed a customer’s expectations you are delivering what they purchased and more. Exceptional services or products are rarely forgotten. There are lots of tips out there on ways to make your customer’s experience with your business both exceptional and memorable, including: Be impeccable with your words. Provide accurate product or service descriptions and only make promises you can keep. Consistently deliver on your promise. No doubt you’ve heard the Tom Peters quote, “Formula for success: under promise and over deliver.” The basic premise of expectation is simple: If you offer it, deliver it. But the magic lies in going the extra mile or as motivational speaker Bob Farrell would say, “give ‘em the pickle.” Be polite. Customers enjoy hearing their names, and they like to hear “please” and “thank you.” It’s free to provide service with good manners. Be accountable – take ownership of the problem. If you make a mistake, admit it, apologize and make it up to the customer. A refund is less expensive – both financially and emotionally – than bad press from an unhappy customer. And follow up: Even after a problem is resolved, staff can exceed expectations by following up with the customer. Be accessible. Make it easy to contact you. Respond promptly to all emails or calls from customers. Staying close to customers gives you the opportunity to develop relationships, to further demonstrate your expertise and increase confidence in you and your business. Being accessible also wins loyalty. Customer satisfaction has everything to do with customer loyalty – especially return and referral business. Empower your staff. Make it simple for people to do business with you. Do something for your customers that they don’t expect. The phrase “be remarkable” is often thrown around yet seldom taken to heart by businesses. Give your customers a reason to talk about you in a positive light. Entrepreneur Richard Branson says the key is to set realistic customer expectations, and then not to just meet them, but to exceed them – preferably in unexpected and helpful ways. Remember the golden rule: “Do unto others ...” Stop and think – if I were buying coffee, reserving a hotel room or selecting a doctor – what would I want? What would make me want to come back again and again? These days, providing adequate customer service is not enough. Surprising a customer by exceeding their expectation is a great way to make sure they’ll be back in the future. Your Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce works closely Horry Georgetown Technical College to offer customer service programs to help businesses improve upon this necessary skill. In addition, MBACC member businesses are known for going that extra mile to provide extraordinary customer service so by attending the chamber’s monthly networking events, you have the chance to talk to other business professionals and learn their tips on creating memorable customer experiences. We would like to hear how your business exceeds customer expectations. Send an email to [email protected] and share the little extras that your employees do to make your customers’ experiences stand out. We’ll include your ideas in an upcoming Grand Strander article. MYRTLE BEACH AREA Small CHAMBER OF COMMERCE’S Business Buzz Pros and cons of offering employee incentives Do you remember as a child how tedious and demanding your chores were? Do you also remember how much more you were willing to partake in those chores when your parent/guardian rewarded you after your task was complete? Whether the reward was with money, candy or a trip the toy store it always seemed like the job was less problematic with some type of incentive. According to author Michael Batton Kapu, (“Advantages and Disadvantages of Employee Incentives”), incentives can encourage employee to work harder, however, employers need to watch closely so they don’t backfire. This follows a twoyear period during which the growth rate in advertised rental prices in that segment increased at more than twice the rate at which average occupancy increased. The 52-week average rate of change in occupancy for the HC-HC group is still above its long-term average rate of change while average rental prices in that segment are hovering at or above the five-year average rate of growth for that segment. 19 Grand Strander gsSCENE EVENTS Register at gsSCENE.com 09.11.13 7:45-9 a.m. Young Professional of the Year gsSCENE is seeking nominations for the Young Professional of the Year.
