Selamat datang. Welcome to all our guests!
We are proud and honoured to be given the opportunity to host the 3 rd ASEAN Traditional
Textiles Symposium 2011 in Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu.
The Symposium hopes to further endorse and recognize the importance of key undertakings by
member countries at the 2
nd
Symposium in Manila 2009.
Amongst others, they are:
· To give respect and due consideration to the socio-economic circumstances of textile creators
and custodial communities.
· To promote and encourage the techniques and use of indigenous materials by master
craftsmen and weavers in traditional textile production.
· To inculcate the importance of having ethical responsibility in the production and marketing of
traditional textiles b y the entrepreneurs and producers.
3 / 19
ASEANTTAC
· To encourage the wearing of traditional textiles and costumes among the peoples of ASEAN.
· To create a new paradigm for preservation of the traditional textile by making it as living craft
and thereby sustaining the related industry.
With this in mind the 3rd ASEAN Traditional Textiles Symposium in Kuala Terengganu,
Terengganu hopes to promote the thematic objective which is to preserve legacy and tradition
of these traditional textiles and to realize its commercial potentiality for sustainability.
The ASEAN Symposium on Traditional Textiles : A Brief Background
In December 2005, the 1st ASEAN Symposium on Traditional Textiles was held in Jakarta,
4 / 19
ASEANTTAC
Indonesia. The aim of the symposium was to highlight the functional and symbolic role that
traditional textiles play in our region, suggesting a common framework of beliefs and customs in
many Southeast Asian societies. Textile specialists, researchers, scholars and entrepreneurs
from seven of the 10 ASEAN countries participated in the symposium, along with textile experts
and enthusiasts from Canada, the U.S., the Netherlands, UK and Germany. There were a total
of 130 participants.
The Symposium was organized by the Himpunan Wastraprema, the Indonesian Traditional
Textiles Society, a group of textile researchers and collectors who are working towards the
preservation and study of indigenous weaving. The symposium was organized mainly on a
volunteer basis and funded by corporate sponsorships and private donations. It was supported
and endorsed by the ASEAN Secretariat which was the venue of the symposium.
In bringing together the ASEAN countries and the rest of the world people who are committed to
the preservation of traditional Southeast Asian textile, the 1 st Symposium was successful. It was
on the basis of the productive outcome and the gains made during the 1
st
Symposium in Jakarta in 2005 that Himpunan Wastraprema (HW), in collaboration with the
Museum Foundation of the Philippines (MFP), was encouraged to spearhead, once again, the 2
nd
symposium held in Manila in February 2009. As the host institution in the Philippines, MFP
collaborated with the National Museum of the Philippines. The 2
nd
symposium was funded mainly by a grant from the ASEAN Foundation with corporate
sponsorships and government support from the host country.
The focus of the 2 nd symposium was to broaden the objectives of the 1 st symposium to include
a plan for a comprehensive training and support program for a new generation of traditional

textile artisans and weavers in Southeast Asia to ensure continuity of traditions. Moreover, the
similarities of some weaving patterns and motifs in certain traditional cultures in Southeast Asia
were also highlighted to illustrate the interconnectedness and links of cultures and traditions in
pre-modern times.
Also, in Manila, the solidarity among ASEAN nations was reaffirmed with the signing of the
“Agreement on the Establishment, Organization and Management of the ASEAN Traditional
Textile Art Community” or ASEAN TTAC. This new body is tasked to oversee the planning of
subsequent symposia and to work with the host country.
In the same forum in Manila, the now internationally recognized ASEAN textile gathering voted
Malaysia as the 3 rd host and unanimously elected Associate Professor Sulaiman Abdul Ghani
as the first president of ASEANTTAC.
Objectives of ASEANTTAC
1. To harness the creative energies of Southeast Asian textiles artisans for their benefit and that
of their communities
2. To recognize the importance of cultural diversities existing in the respective textile producing

communities of Southeast Asia.
3. To facilitate community-based development strategies to fully maximize human and
economic resources.
