We have a new sponsor, Frank’s, in Cottage Hills. Our group will be going there Oct. 7. The Morgans, Roberts, and Schmidts attended the Illinois District Rally in Rock Falls. There was a custard eating contest on Thursday at Culvers. Mary Adams, Callie Morgan, Walter Potwora, and Bonnie’s grandson participated. There were many others, also. On Thursday night we enjoyed a sunset ride led by Mary Adams’ husband, Bob. There sure are some big cornfields in that area. We had a ride to Galena led by Bob Adams on Friday. We also stopped so see a working windmill in Fulton. Since rides were planned, they didn’t have vendors. On Friday night we enjoyed a dinner at the community center in which sponsors donated the food. Niehaus was one of the sponsors. There was a corn on the cob eating contest, since they had a lot of corn left. Bonnie’s grandson won it. On Saturday morning we watched the drill team, Kansas City Twisters, put on a great performance. We had a coupon in our packet for a sandwich or flatbread at a local place. We used it Saturday for lunch. Saturday afternoon Morgans, Roberts, and Schmidts participated in the flag parade by carrying a state flag. We carried the state flag of Oregon, since Wayne has a cousin there, and Shirley knows a retired teacher there. Since there were too many people for the Candlelight Inn in Rock Falls on Saturday night, Bob www.GWRRA-IL.COM Goldwing Road Riders Association Illinois Chapter ‘E’ ‘Traildusters’ Litchfield, Illinois Adams led a group of us to the Candlelight Inn in Sterling. We had a $10 off coupon. We wish more people from Chapter E could have been there. It was a fantastic rally! Mary Adams and Dan Davis will continue in their positions for next year. Thank you to everyone who helped with our yard sale. We made over $1,000. It was a very busy weekend for us, since we also had the Prairietown Homecoming. On July 31 we enjoyed a midnight ride with a full moon. We had a big group. Six members from Chapter U greeted us at Denny’s in Vandalia. On August 15 Bill and Callie Morgan led us on a mystery ride. We had seven bikes and twelve people. They took us to a car show in Waggoner, McLintock’s Saloon and Steakhouse in Girard, and of course we had an ice cream stop at Whirl A Whip in Girard. We are looking forward to our Route 66 trip in September. Our assistant directors, Rick and Maggie Filson will be in charge of our gathering. Enjoy the rest of the riding season. It’s zooming by. We’re having a lot of fun, and hope you are, too. Chapter Directors Wayne & Shirley Schmidt Chapter “E” getting ready for the Midnight Ride at Love's in Hamel www.GWRRA-IL.COM Goldwing Road Riders Association Illinois Chapter ‘E’ ‘Traildusters’ Litchfield, Illinois Past events: July 11th – 12th was the overnight ride to Kansas City to the Arabian Steamboat museum. The Schmidts and Robersons made the trip. Wayne and Dan said that the museum was packed with artifacts recovered from the Arabian Steamboat. The boat sunk in 1856 and was carrying 200 tons of supplies. It was lost for 132 years. July 18th Rick Filson led a group through eastern Missouri back country south west of St. Louis. Rick led the group down twisty letter roads and ended up at Baylee Jo's BBQ in Ironton. After lunch, they headed back stopping for ice cream in Caledonia, Mo. July 24th – 26th was the District Summer Rally in Rock Falls. Three couples from our chapter made the trip. This year, there were no vendors and instead, lots of rides were scheduled. Although there was a risk of rain, it ended up that there were just a few very brief showers. July 31st we had a full moon midnight ride. We left from Love’s in Hamel with a group of a dozen or so and went to the Denny’s in Vandalia. There, we met up with 6 members of chapter U. The weather was great for this ride. August 7th - 8th was the Region E Rally in Green Bay Wisconsin. At the region rally, the Illinois state couple of the year, Bob and Vickie Fowkes were named Region E couple of the year. In 2016 Bob and Vickie will compete at Wing Ding for international couple of the year. August 8th was the chapter yard sale. The weather turned out great for this event and we had lots of help from chapter members. Niehaus Cycle Sales again provided their storage building for us to set up and hold the sale. We cleared more than $1000 from this event that we will later divide between the JDRF and the American Cancer Society. After the yard sale, we donated a truck load of leftover items to Hearts United and several truck loads to the Salvation Army. Future events: September 2nd will be our fall visit to the Brass Door for coffee break. We will meet at the gazebo across the street at 6:30 p.m. and be seated as a group. Jerry will supply a meeting location and time at the September meeting. www.GWRRA-IL.COM Goldwing Road Riders Association Illinois Chapter ‘E’ ‘Traildusters’ Litchfield, Illinois Keep your mind on the ride I know you have seen demonstrations or heard about the “No-Zone.” And you also know that it's not a good idea to drive in a trucker's blind spots. In this scenario, let's assume you are riding in light traffic in an urban setting. You are not concerned about riding alongside a big truck, because you know the driver saw you as he pulled alongside you. You ease on some speed s you maintain pace with the traffic. Suddenly, the truck starts to pull over into your lane. Your first thought is that the driver just had a momentary drift into your lane but the truck keeps coming and you are forced onto the shoulder to avoid being hit. You are furious and accelerate to catch up with the driver, honking your horn and shouting. The driver doesn't seem to understand your actions, but there's nothing he can do. You decide to speed up even faster ahead of the truck to swerve closely in front of him to show your anger. The big mistake here was assuming the driver of the semi knew where you were in traffic. At first he was gaining on you, so he might have thought he had passed you. But staying beside the truck put you in his blind spot. A driver's views in the mirrors are very limited. It is very easy for a truck driver to lose track of a tiny motorcycle. Even if the driver signals, you are not in a good position to see the lights blinking. That's why the areas surrounding trucks are called the “No Zone.” To prevent collisions you need to be aware of developing situations and take evasive actions early. It's never a good idea to pace a large vehicle. You can predict that a trucker in an urban setting might be looking for a delivery address or cross street. Get out of the way early. In this situation, for example, you could have accelerated and changed to the center lane to position yourself in front of the truck where the driver could see you better. Or, dropped back to a position where a lane change by the trucker wouldn't have endangered you.
