Welcome to the 2008 NETC Convention
Welcome to the future, fellow theatre enthusiasts!
It is with great excitement that we announce our plans for this
year’s NETC Convention which promises to be the event of
the season.
The theme of the 57th Annual New England Theatre
Conference Annual Convention reminds us of the need to
perpetuate our craft by sharing our ideas and knowledge, and
is appropriately titled, this being an Olympic
year…Generations: Passing The Torch. We want to inspire
people to go the distance!
This year’s setting for the Convention is the elegant WarwickProvidence Crown Plaza Hotel, just minutes from Providence.
This is a perfect location for the event and we are sure you
will agree once you step foot into the lobby of this wonderful
venue.
Joining us this year are some of the theatre world’s finest to
educate and talk about many diverse subjects. So, what can
you expect this year? Well, the 57th Annual Convention will…
• Honor those individuals for their outstanding contribution
and commitment to national and regional theatre. Some of
this years’ honorees include our Major Award recipient, Tony
Award Nominee Andrea McArdle (ANNIE) and our Special
Award recipients: Tony Award Winner Cady Huffman (THE
PRODUCERS), Tony Award Nominee Michael Berresse (KISS
ME KATE, A CHORUS LINE) and Tony Award Nominee Tim
Jerome (ME AND MY GIRL, TARZAN) just to mention a few,
with more to be announced. Each of the award recipients
will be actively participating in a workshop, master class or
interview format.
• Feature a special special opportunity to purchase tickets to
see the Friday, November 21, 2008 opening night
performance of A CHRISTMAS CAROL presented by the
Trinity Repertory Company in Providence. Tickets must be
purchased with registration and are subject to availability.
We have a limited number of tickets, so register soon!!
• Provide convention attendees with diverse and exciting
programming for all divisions which covers a wide array of
theatrical topics from acting workshops to directing to
auditioning to vocal coaching to dancing, just to mention a
few of the topics. We have workshops from theatre
professionals from many backgrounds to share their
knowledge and ideas with you.
• Provide secondary students with an opportunity to
participate in our Second Annual Theatre Odyssey:

The following pages preview our three-day event, listing many
of our workshops, seminars and special events, which NETC
is very proud to sponsor. We will also feature a college fair on
Friday and Saturday for secondary students who will have an
opportunity to speak with college representatives about their
performing arts programs.
Vendors from around New England will be on hand to
demonstrate the latest and greatest technology and media
available.
This is definitely going to be a weekend that you don’t want

Among the artists and educators to be honored at the convention are:
ANDREA MCARDLE, Major Award Recipient
In 1977, McArdle is most popularly known for orginating the title role in the Broadway musical Annie. For this
role, she became the youngest performer ever to be nominated for a Tony Award as Best Lead Actress in a
Musical. She received the Theater World and Outer Critics' Circle Awards for her performance. Her vast theatre
credits include Les Misérables, [both on Broadway and in the national tour], the Jerry Herman musical, Jerry's
Girls alongside Carol Channing and Leslie Uggams], Beauty and the Beast, Cabaret, Evita, The Fantasticks,
Oliver!, Gypsy, Grease, Starlight Express, State Fair, Meet Me In St. Louis, They're Playing Our Song, as well as
playing another celebrated Annie in Irving Berlin's classic, Annie Get Your Gun.
McArdle has performed in the showrooms of many of the casino hotels in Las Vegas and Atlantic City, and in
cabarets such as the renowned Joe’s Pub at the Public Theatre in New York, Odette's in New Hope,
Pennsylvania and the King Cole Room at the St. Regis Hotel as well as Freddy's Supper Club in Manhattan.
Her CD, Andrea McArdle on Broadway, was arranged and produced by her husband, composer Edd Kalehoff,
who also collaborated with her on an album of Christmas songs that was released in conjunction with her
Family Christmas Show at the Tropicana Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The couple has one
daughter, Alexis Kalehoff, who has performed in many shows, some alongside her mother, including her
Broadway debut in Les Miserables.
Her appearances on television include a critically acclaimed portrayal of Judy Garland in the NBC TV movie
Rainbow, appearances on Great Performances on PBS including Broadway Plays Washington on Kennedy
Center; My Favorite Broadway: The Leading Ladies; Broadway's Lost Treasures; Listen to Her Heart: The Life
and Music of Laurie Beechman, and talk shows including Johnny Carson, Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin and
Dinah Shore, not only as a performer but as an ambassador for the March of Dimes.
CADY HUFFMAN, Special Award Recipient
Huffman first came to Broadway as a replacement cast member in the hit musical La Cage aux Folles (1985),
and was quickly cast in Bob Fosse's Big Deal, to be followed by a Tony-Award nomination for her performance
in The Will Rogers Follies (1991). She made her film debut in the 1992 film Hero which stars Dustin Hoffman,
Geena Davis, and Andy Garcia. In 2001, she played the role of Ulla in the Broadway musical The Producers, by
Mel Brooks. Huffman received the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical for the
role. She later appeared as herself in several guest spots on the television show Curb Your Enthusiasm. She
produced, starred in and acted as production designer for the independent film "Sunday On The Rocks" directed by Joe Morton. She was seen in the film Romance & Cigarettes starring James Gandolfini, Susan
Sarandon, Christopher Walken, Kate Winslet, and Mandy Moore. In 2005, Huffman took over for Kimberlin
Brown as Dr. Paige Miller on One Life to Live. Huffman also starred in the off-Broadway play Surface to Air
directed by James Naughton, a rare dramatic part for the actress who usually appears on stage in musicals.
She is a regular food taster on Food Network's Iron Chef America.
MICHAEL BERRESSE, Special Award Recipient
Berresse is an actor from Holyoke, MA. who has appeared on Broadway in many shows including the revival of
Kiss Me, Kate for which he received nominations for a Tony, Olivier, Outer Critics Circle and the Astaire Award.
He has also appeared in Chicago, Fiddler on the Roof, Carousel and Damn Yankees, and The Light in the
Piazza as Giuseppe Naccarelli, for which he received an Outer Critics Circle nomination. Berresse was recently
seen on Broadway as Zach in the revival of the musical A Chorus Line. He is also the director and choreographer of the highly acclaimed off-Broadway musical, [title of show] for which he was nominated for a Lucille
Lortel Award and was a recipient of off-Broadway's Obie Award. The show recently moved to Broadway, again
under the direction of Berresse.
TIM JEROME, Special Award Recipient
Jerome has had a long career performing on and off Broadway and on the big screen. He recently portrayed
Professor Porter in Disney's Tarzan. Just prior to that he played one of the two theatre managers in
Broadway's longest running musical, Phantom of the Opera. He appeared in the original Broadway casts of
Grand Hotel, The Moony Shapiro Songbook, Arthur Miller's Creation of the World and Other Business, and The

Rothschilds. He was also nominated for the Drama Desk and
Tony Awards for his performance in Me and My Girl. He was
featured in Baz Luhrmann's production of La Boheme in the
roles of Alcindoro and Benoit. Also on Broadway, Tim performed leading roles in Beauty and the Beast, Cats, The Magic
Show, Lost in Yonkers, and Man of La Mancha. He also participated in the pre-Broadway development of Ragtime, The Red
Shoes, The Baker's Wife and Assassins. Jerome is Founding
President of National Music Theater Network, Inc. In 1983, he
designed its core programs. NMTN evaluates and promotes
new musicals and is responsible for launching several successful programs featuring new works, notably The Songbook
Series, The New York Musical Theatre Festival and
BroadwayUSA!,a program of regional festivals of new musicals.
EXTRA SPECIAL STEPS PROGRAM,
STEPS OFF BROADWAY PRODUCTIONS
INCORPORATED
Award Recipient
Established in 1998, "ESS" is a unique
program developed by trained professionals to introduce individuals with special
needs to the performing arts. The design of
the program focuses on students’ skills and abilities. The program is structured to enable each student to learn, given the
specific level of attention, support, or accommodation they may
require in order to be a successful performer. Since the beginning, ESS prides itself in specializing dance and theater instruction to the students’ needs. Because of the individual care and
understanding provided to each student and family, their program has built a strong foundation and reputation as being
one-of-a-kind.
PAT WHITTON FOREST
Regional Award Recipient
Pat is the founder, editor and publisher
of NewPlays, Inc. which has offered a
repertoire of children’s plays, new plays
books, & dramatics in learning texts for
over 30 years. Pat has been a staple of many NETC conferences, a vendor of new plays, an author (along with Trish
Lindberg of a text on playwriting – “Bringing the Word alive:
Children’s Writings from Process to Performance.” Pat has
served as a finalist reader for NETC’s Aurand Harris Award
since its inception and has selected several of its winners for
publication.

SANDRA FEINSTEIN-GAMM THEATRE
Regional Award Recipient
The Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre in
Pawtucket, RI, has, since it’s relocation to
Pawtucket, been consistently offering affordable,
exemplary professional theatre to the surrounding Pawtucket/ Providence, RI community. The theatre has
become a major contributor to the Providence theatre and arts
community, not only due to its high artistic standards, but also
due to its community outreach and excellent work in working
with arts for youth.
THE ACADEMY PLAYERS,
EAST GREENWICH, RI
Regional Award Recipient
The Academy Players was organized in 1955 by a group of
enthusiasts in East Greenwich and has a substantial record of
growth and achievement. Membership is open to any adult
interested in helping to participate in Academy Players productions, special events, workshops and meetings of general interest. The intent of The Academy Players is to provide the community with theatre on a high level to create civic pride in our
organization, while offering a satisfying medium for those who
participate. We are staffed by a dedicated team of members
who volunteer to do everything from building sets to directing
productions. Actors, directors and technical crew are recruited
from throughout Rhode Island, eastern Connecticut and southern Massachusetts. Local high school and college students
who are eager to put their course studies to task are also
encouraged to participate.
MICHAEL GUY,
TRINITY REPERTORY COMPANY
Regional Award Recipient
Michael has used his talent to create graphic representations of
every play at Trinity since 1980, close to 200 designs. It is
through his eye that people have gotten their first glimpse of
each play. He essentially has condensed teh essence of each
play into an image by reading each play, visualizing its meaning,
rendering the design. This wonderful artist has used his ability
to entice theatregoers, young and old, from every culture abd
background into the seats at Trinity.

2ND ANNUAL THEATRE ODYSSEY 2008
Join us for the second annual high school THEATRE ODYSSEY on Friday, November 21! The ODYSSEY is a full day of INTENSIVE
TRAINING in the theatre arts. Students may choose from six courses of instruction. Each participant will receive a CERTIFICATE OF
ACHIEVEMENT upon successful completion of four sessions of workshops. Students will also COMPETE for SPECIAL AWARDS in their
track through vocal, dance or acting auditions, or make-up, costume, lighting or set design projects. In addition, each school will receive
a CERTIFICATE OF PARTICIPATION from NETC.
NEW to the Odyssey will be the Ten-minute Play Showcase. Students may submit original 10-minute scripts (deadline: October 21). Each
script will be judged and the top four scripts will be eligible for presentation at the Odyssey 10-Minute Play Showcase.
Students may choose from any one of the following tracks:

Special Master Class for Educators and Directors:
THE LIVING THEATRE
NETC will be offering a Special Master Class for Educators which will run Friday through Saturday.
THE LIVING THEATRE will be presented by Jerry Goralnick. For sixty years the Living Theatre has
explored techniques for creating social-interactive political theater and to expand definitions of performance. This workshop is to help teachers and directors bring these techniques into their classrooms and theatres. Participants will experience a number of exercises drawn from Meyerhold’s bio

Jerry Goralnick has worked with The Living Theatre for twenty five years. His credits with the company include Ali Sayed in Capital Changes, Brick Blume in Anarchia which he co-directed, Einstein in
Waste, Hitler in I and I, The Answerer in The Tablets, Zev in Poland 1931 as well as a dozen other
productions performed in the U.S., Europe and South America. He co-directed The Body of God and
created and directed Living Theatre’s most recent street theater production NO SIR! Mr. Goralnick cofounded and co-directs The Living Theatre Workshops and has taught Living Theatre techniques
around the world.
