N U M S September/Oct. 2014 Excellent with Distinction Bullying by Kenzie L. Bullying has become a major problem in our society today. Kids are harrasing each other because of what they look like, the way they talk, where they come from, their size, and many other things. IT NEEDS TO STOP! We think that it is all fun, but someone is actually hurting, they may not show it, and you may not know it, but they ARE hurting. Some deal with it by telling an adult, others may kill themselves. I don’t think that it is fair to the people who have to suffer through things. Some people think that it is okay to bully and that nothing bad can come from this, but they are WRONG! We see it all the time on the news that someone has commited suicide, or that schools are starting to take action because of students reporting bullying at their school. Luckly, our school has tried to stop this from happening, but we know there is no definate way of making sure that this never happens again. Bullying Statistics: Statistics show that 1 in 7 students grades k-12 are either a bully or a victim of bullying. That may not sound like a lot of kids but just think about it for a moment. There is a 1 in 7 chance that someone is a bully of being bullied. Another statistic is 56% of students have personally witnesseed some type of bullying. Weather it be physical, cyber, or verbal. That is over half (50%) of the students that have witnessed it, but how many really report it? (Continued on Page 4) [ [ Volume 7, Issue 1 What’s going on in the Middle East, Anyway? What You Need to Know about ISIS and why it Matters to the U.S. Written by Kayla K. What are these “Sunnis” and “Shiites”? Sunnis and Shiites are religious factions of the religion, Islam. When Muhammad died, back century, there was a disagreement over who would be the next leader of Islam. Over time, in the 7ththe division between the two has grown into political rivalries. The two sects or factions share many similarities concerning the practice of Islam, but disagree on some smaller practices. For centuries the Middle East was part of the Ottoman Empire, but the Sunnis and Shiites usually were separated. However, after World War One, a French diplomat and a British colonel drew, in secret, neat lines to divide the Middle East into separate areas of control. These lines mixed the Sunnis and Shiites together causing extreme tension. Only force and strong dictators could keep a lid on the tension. When the US invaded Iraq in 2003, we took out Iraq’s dictator, Suddam Hussein. When that happened, the tensions between the Sunnis and Shiites exploded. It became even more complicated from 2011 to 2013 with the Syrian revolts and civil war against President Bashar al-Assad. The violence in Syria spread and spilled over the Syrian borders into Iraq. That is where ISIS makes an entrance. (Continued on Pg. 4) Origins of the Caramel Apple By Sabrina Q. Caramel apples were invented in the 1950’s by a man name Dan Walker. He was working at a candy factory called Kraft Foods Company. Back then caramel candies were a standard for Halloween, so putting the two together -- an apple and caramel candies -- the first original caramel apple was invented. But a decade later the first caramel apple machine was invented by Vito Raimondi with the help of his uncle William in Chicago, Illinois where they continue to own and operate one of the largest companies that produce caramel apples today. Tis the season for caramel apples and this flavor is such a vintage one for this time of year. (Check out the recipe on page 7) NUMS Cross County is Star ting Strong Written by Kayla K. Check it out at http://www. stompoutbullying. org/index.php/ campaigns/nationalbullying-preventionawareness-month/ What is the U.S.doing about it? The US is taking action against the current ISIS situation. We have sent 300 military officials to help the Iraqi government as well as train Iraqi troops. We will not, however, be sending troops to the Middle East. More than likely, this will be problem that the Iraqis will have to solve themselves. Experts say that it is unlikely that the Iraqi government will be able to recover the land that ISIS currently has control over. Why does this matter to the U.S.? There are many aspects to why this situation is important to the US. For one thing, ISIS has caused millions of refugees to relocate to other countries. We also have many allies in close proximity to where ISIS currently resides, and they could be in danger. The main reason why this matters to the US is oil. Iraq is a large oil producer and should their production decrease, gas prices in the US and around the world, would soar. Finally, if the Iraqi government fails, ISIS could pose a terrorism threat against the world and the U.S. However, I think that the real question is what should the U.S. do about it? The N.U.L.S.D. definition of Bullying -- is an intentional written, verbal, electronic or physical act that a student has exhibited toward another particular student more than once. The intentional act also includes violence within a dating relationship. The behavior causes mental or physical harm to the other student and is sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive that it creates an intimidating, threatening or abusive educational environment for the other student. NUMS S.T.U.C.O. By Kayla K. Student Council has many plans to make this a great school year. Scheduled for November 21, Student Council is planning on having a fall themed school dance. The teacher with the most feathers will have to wear a turkey costume and second place will have to wear a pilgrim costume on November 25. The proceeds from Turkey Teacher day goes to Britt's Brunch, a local charity. STUCO hopes to see a lot of students at the dance and a great outcome for Turkey Teacher day. A squirrel walked by and asked why the bulb wasn’t changed yet and the red leaf said, “Because we keep falling.” Why do birds fly south in the Fall? Because it is too far to walk. I got tired of looking at all those leaves in my yard, so I got up off the couch and went into action. I closed the curtains. Autumn is a great time of the year. Soon those ugly patches of dead grass in your lawn will be covered up -- with ugly patches of dead leaves. According to Calvin the end of Mirosoft Excel is XFD 1048576! But in truth, Michael is extremely special—he has electric powers. Michael thinks he is unique until he discovers that a cheerleader named Taylor has the same mysterious powers. With the help of Michael’s friend, Ostin, the three of them set out to discover how Michael and Taylor ended up with their abilities, and their investigation soon brings them to the attention of a powerful group who wants to control the electric teens— and through them, the world. The Review- I thought it was good. The charters were amazingly made. The author also showed the characters personalities well. It was the author's 1st fiction book so you've got to give him credit, he did really well. It was fast paced and had my favorite thing which is the calm before the storm. The mystery about the characters lives showed through well and the problems they have, before and after, they figure out secrets is well written. For example, say you have an older phone like the 4s, 5, 5c, and 5s, when you try to download the IOS 8 you need 4.8 gb of data. Many of people had to reset thier phone, but thought that iCloud would save them. Unfortunatly, they were wrong; the IOS 8 wipes out all but 50 photos and the only thing it sends to the cloud is your music. Apple heard of theses problems and tried to help so they updated to ios 8.2, well that didn't work either. I updated this morning and that didn't do anything there is no difference to the IOS 8. When you download ios 8 you have to download it and that takes about 2 hour, and then you have to install it and that takes about another 30 minutes of your time. Now the happy part. There is now family sharing where you parents and aunts, uncle, even grandparents can see your text pictures and apps. IMHO thats awesome “NOT”. You can’t even shut it off the only good thing that I like is the time lapse on your camera and that is pretty cool. Q: What is this fundraising going to help? I interviewed (50) 6th graders on how they like Middle School. I gave them four choices: 1. I love Middle School 2. It’s good 3. I hate Middle School 4. I don’t know yet. After I did the math this is what I came up with: 66% said ‘I love Middle School’ 4% said, ‘It’s good’ 15% said, ‘I hate Middle School’ 15% said, ‘I don’t know yet.’
