Death notice – our Nuclear Group has lost two Giants
"
Manson Benedict, born in 1907, died September 18th, 2006
# Mr. Benedict developed the gaseous diffusion method for separating
uranium isotopes. In 1958, he was named the first nuclear department
head at MIT. He was an ANS fellow and former president of the ANS.
"
Alvin Weinberg was born in 1915 and died October 18th, 2006
# Mr. Weinberg was the "keeper of k" for the first nuclear reactor,
Chicago Pile One. Credited with the first practical design of a light
water reactor for producing power. Served as Director of Oak Ridge
National Lab. All of his life he was a prolific and visionary author,
lecturer, and advisor to the U.S. Government. He was an ANS Fellow
and former President of the ANS

APPLICATION ADVANCED with its issuance of the supplemental final
safety evaluation report as a NUREG report.

The staff amended its SER after Dominion revised its approach for cooling a proposed
third unit at the site and increased the power for the proposed units 3 and 4.
The staff said changes Dominion made to the application after the staff's initial
technical review did not affect the previous findings.
The release of the report (NUREG 1835, Supplement 1) was completed
several days ahead of the staff's projected November 20 date.
