However at the present time with the down turn these lots are not selling and the owners are left with very high tax bills. While this may ultimately mean lower market value assessments and taxes, in the meantime the tax bills remain high. Mayor and Council have lobbied the provincial government in different ways to seek another classification for local rural businesses. Members of Council met with the Honorable Minister of Municipal Affairs on Thursday, February 11th, 2016 in Fort McMurray. The topic of rural taxation for local businesses was a top priority. In August of 2015 Council passed a motion to have the provincial Order in Council which created our regional municipality changed to allow for lower non-residential taxes in the hamlets. The Order in Council is a much quicker way to change the tax rate. In the discussion this last week it appears that the provincial government is waiting for the changes in the Municipal Government Act which we feel is not necessary. My concern is that it might be too late for some of the small businesses. In speaking to one business owner he is dreading June when the tax bills come out. Local rural businesses and I have met with MLA Tany Yao in recent weeks discussing the taxes and asking to lobby in the Legislature. Mayor and a number of Councillors also met with the Leader of the Wildrose party, Brian Jean to gain support. The Metis groups within Fort McMurray and the rural hamlets met with the Honorable Minister of Aboriginal Affairs, Kathleen Ganley citing this concern. The Honorable Finance Minister Joe Ceci and the Honorable Minister David Eggan have also been made aware. Council also passed a resolution in October of 2012 which was forwarded to the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties (AAMDC). The resolution specifically asked that the province either amend the Municipal Government Act or create regulations which would enable the creation of sub-classes within the rural non-residential tax category. At the AAMDC meeting which is represented by Mayors and Councillors from all over Alberta the resolution passed with 93% in favour. It appears that it is a rural problem throughout Alberta. Other provinces such as Saskatchewan and Ontario have flexibility in their taxation classifications allowing municipalities to decide how their taxes should be distributed amongst taxpayers. We need to see this happen in Alberta. For any good deeds or concerns please e-mail [email protected] or telephone 780-334-0516. 4 Conklin Newsletter Municipal Updates Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo March, 2016 5 Conklin Newsletter Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo March, 2016 6 Conklin Newsletter Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo March, 2016 7 Conklin Newsletter Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo COMMUNITY CORNER March 6 March 7 March 8 March 10 March 12 March 13 March 14 March 15 March 18 March 22 March 23 March 24 March 26 March 28 March 30 Ilyanna Janvier Terra Richards Darren Bone Hannah Belhumeur Jessica Adby Dallas Deranger Kristen Alook Vanessa Shephard Alysha Powder Kurtis Richards Aiden Richards Doyle Quintal Jayden Cardinal Sophia Grace Janvier Verna Quintal-Janvier Lilly Bone Vincent Deranger Elsie Cardinal Kelsey Monias Velma Quintal-Nokohoo Kazia Robillard Nicholas Callan Justin Cardinal Holly Quintal Kamiya Quintal-Warwawa Gredda Nater Ernest Bone Doris Quintal Jordon Quintal MacKenzie Whiteknife Danielle Powder Sherry Tremblay Laura Cardinal Kylie McKenzie If you wish to have your birthday published in the Conklin, Nakewin News Please submit in writing & deliver to the Municipal Office. Identity Theft Statement PDF Maybe you never opened that account, or ordered an additional card, but someone else did....someone who used your name and personal information to commit fraud. When an imposter uses your name, your Social Insurance Number (SIN), your credit card number, or some other piece of your personal information for their use - in short when someone appropriates your personal information without your knowledge - it's a crime, pure and simple Are you a Victim? A creditor informs you that an application for credit was received with your name and address, which you did not apply for. • • • • • Telephone calls or letters state that you have been approved or denied by a creditor that you never applied to. You receive credit card statements or other bills in your name, which you did not apply for. You no longer receive credit card statements or you notice that not all of your mail is delivered. A collection agency informs you they are collecting for a defaulted account established with your identity and you never opened the account. Identity Theft Statement - What is it? If you have been a victim of identity theft, the Identity Theft Statement helps you notify financial institutions, credit card issuers and other companies that the identity theft occurred, tell them that you did not create the debt or charges, and give them information they need to begin an investigation. Make as many copies of the Statement as you will need to notify all affected companies. You will need Acrobat Reader to view the statement. If you suspect that your personal information has been hijacked and misappropriated to commit fraud or theft, take action immediately and keep a record of your conversations and correspondence. The following basic actions are appropriate in almost every case. • • • • • • Start a log of dates, person(s) that you spoke with and exactly what they said. Contact the fraud departments of each of the two major credit bureaus. Equifax: (866) 828-5961 Trans Union: (800) 663-9980 except Quebec residents (877) 713-3393. Request that a "Fraud Alert" be placed in your files. At the same time order copies of your credit reports. Contact the fraud department of creditors for any accounts that have been opened or tampered with fraudulently. This may include credit card companies, phone companies, banks and other lenders. File a report with your local Police or the Police in the community where the identity theft took place. Contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC). CAFC is currently central sourcing all pertinent information on Identity Theft to identity trends and patterns, information is also used to assist law enforcement agencies in possible investigations. Remember There is no reason to be paranoid; there's just reason to be careful. If someone wants desperately to target you, they can probably get a lot of information about you -- so you just need to minimize the criminal's opportunities to get that information. You can make yourself a harder target and that is the best defense. If you are a victim, do not panic, in most cases you will not be out any money. When you've been careful about disclosing your personal information the losses will likely be attributed to the banks and or companies associated with the fraud. Minimize The Risk While you probably can't prevent identity theft entirely, you can minimize your risk. Identity theft is on the rise and it can happen to anyone. It can happen to you. By managing your personal information wisely, cautiously and with an awareness of the issue, you can help guard against identity • 11 Conklin Newsletter Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo March, 2016 12 Conklin Newsletter Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo March, 2016 13 Conklin Newsletter Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo March, 2016 14 Conklin Newsletter Conklin School Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo March, 2016 Friday February 26, 2016 Dear Community Members, Thank You! Tansi! Thank you to all the parents and community members who attended our Vision and Mission Statement meeting on Tuesday February 23. Your input was valuable and appreciated. Thank you also to those parents who completed the Parent Survey and the Accountability Pillar Survey. Feedback allows us to improve. Hello, can you hear me? At the meeting on Tuesday night, it was mentioned that the school, almost weekly, newsletters sometimes do not reach the parents at home. To keep up to date with school news and info, please check out our school website (listed below) or like us on Facebook. Copies of the newsletter can be found there. Starting shortly, reminder texts from the school will be sent to all parents and guardians. Make sure your contact numbers are up to date at the school. Please call the school if you have any questions or concerns about receiving texts from the school. Also attached to the last February school newsletter are Freedom of Information and Privacy (FOIP) forms. After reviewing the forms on file at school, it was noticed that a few forms were not filled out correctly and that maybe the forms were confusing for some people. Therefore, we are asking you to redo the FOIP forms to ensure that you are giving your permission to use and publish your child’s pictures, videos, school work and other visual or auditory information in our newsletters, websites, and other mediums. If you do not understand the FOIP forms, please come to the school and we will assist you with it. Reminder – Religious Instruction Reminder, Father Reddy will be visiting the school every Tuesday afternoon and offer religious instruction. If you do not want your child to participate in this activity, please call the school. Spring Swimming Starting in April for six weeks, each homeroom will go to Lac La Biche for swimming lessons. Mrs. Kaziuk’s class will be Tuesday, Ms. Reck’s on Wednesday, and Mr. Ricketts’ on Thursday. We might need volunteers to chaperone. More info will be sent home later in March. 15 Conklin Newsletter Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Enjoy Working with Children? March, 2016 Want to work at the school?
