Message from
E
O
The Chancellor
ducation is such a critical part of what makes communities better. Through education, we gain
perspective, understanding and a foundation for individual and collective success. Today, we celebrate
your successes, and recognize how far you have come both personally and professionally.
This is your day, and now is your time. At KPU, you have had the opportunity to be a part of something great.
The university is bigger, better and bolder than ever, and this is just the beginning. Like yours, our future is
exciting. We are Canada’s only polytechnic university, and our graduates are local and global leaders.
The President and Vice-Chancellor
n behalf of all the entire KPU community, I welcome one and all to this happy day of celebration where
we honor our Fall 2014 graduates.
This is a crucial time in KPU’s history as it emerges from the early and sometime difficult years as a special
purpose, regional, teaching university with a unique mandate in the Canadian post-secondary system. KPU is
now the largest university of its kind in Western Canada, and the 5th largest post-secondary institution in B.C.
The impact KPU has on the community is massive, and your role in that will continue as you set out to
achieve new goals. Our alumni have the power to affect change, and they positively impact all of our
communities – including ours, right here, at KPU. Your success is the university’s success.
Our VISION 2018 and its nine goals direct us to make KPU a better place to study and to work; to grow
along with its community in terms of student numbers, community engagement and relevance to our
region’s needs; and to tell our story more boldly and in ways that support our alumni as they make their
way into the world of work and citizenship.
It is an honour to have assumed the role of chancellor this year, and I am especially proud to be doing so
as a KPU alumnus. Kwantlen Polytechnic University is my university, and it will forever be yours as you
continue your journey to success.
It is my sincere honor to serve as KPU’s second president, and I look forward to working with my
wonderful colleagues, our Board of Governors and new chancellor, our friends in local, provincial and federal
governments, our sister institutions, and so many community partners to achieve this vision together.
To our bigger, better, bolder futures.
Sincerely,
Dr. Alan Davis
President and Vice-Chancellor
Dr. George Melville
Chancellor

KPU’s Story
Kwantlen Polytechnic University is an innovative, transformative and ambitious institution that serves
the needs of Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, and beyond. KPU strives at all times to inspire students to
excel in their careers, lead in their communities, and succeed in their lives. With campuses in Richmond,
Surrey-Newton, Surrey-Cloverdale and Langley, (and now with ties to Maple Ridge) KPU has opened the
doors to success for more than 250,000 graduates over its 30 year history.
Established in 1981 by the Province of British Columbia, KPU proudly adopted the name of the Kwantlen
First Nation, whose people are acknowledged historically as ‘tireless runners.’ The name has proven to
be prophetic as KPU, the institution, runs tirelessly to expand its capacity to serve the citizens of Metro
Vancouver, the province, the nation, and the world.

KPU is a teaching university, delivering degree programs, credentials in technology and trades, career
and preparatory studies, and professional education, all of which reflect and express its unique polytechnic
mandate. KPU emphasizes applied degree education and is committed to broad-based undergraduate
learning that prepares students for successful and rewarding careers while also providing them with the
ethical framework and critical understanding necessary for good citizenship. KPU’s innovative style
of education involves work-integrated and service learning, practical connection to industry and small
class sizes where supportive learning environments and enhanced teacher-student relationships are valued.
The University’s commitment to applied research and innovation with external partners enhances the
quality of its teaching, and contributes significantly to the economic development of the region.
As a university that allows for multiple interpretations of excellence, students define and design the
path to success that's right for them. Their key to success is a KPU experience that transforms students into
graduates who lead in their communities.

Honorary Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa)
Dianne Watts
Through nine years of leadership, Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts has been
a catalyst for innovation in one of Canada’s fastest growing cities. Over
the course of her three-term tenure as mayor, Watts redefined the role as
one that champions the needs of Surrey through collaboration between
various levels of government, social service, economic, non-profit and
community interests.
Elected as the city’s first female mayor in 2005 after nine years as a
city councillor, Watts announced last spring her intention not to seek
re-election this fall. She will leave behind her 18 years of dedication
that have shaped the Surrey of today, and paved the way for the Surrey
of tomorrow. Several key strategies spearheaded by Watts include
the Economic Investment Action Plan and the Build Surrey Program,
which is the largest construction and investment program in the city’s
history. She has also been a driving force behind Innovation Boulevard,
a network of health institutions, universities, companies and health care
professionals located within one square mile in Surrey’s City Centre.

The economic impact Watts has had on the city is matched by her social
impact. During her mayoralty, she introduced the Crime Reduction
Strategy, the Poverty Reduction Strategy and Surrey’s Housing and
Homelessness Master Plan, which have resulted in funding six outreach
workers and creating 67 beds at the Phoenix Treatment Facility, 36
supportive units for single moms and children at the YWCA, 52 units
at the Timber Grove Mental Health Centre and 92 units at the Quibble
Creek Sobering Centre. And through her annual Mayor’s Charity Ball,
Watts has helped generate over $1 million for the Surrey Firefighters
Charitable Society.

Honorary Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa)
Jane Adams
Mike McKay
Jane Adams has made a career of helping others, and building healthy
communities. She was the inaugural executive director of the BC Women’s
Hospital Foundation – B.C.’s only hospital dedicated to the health of women
and babies – and currently serves as the secretary, president and CEO of
the Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation (SMHF). Adams has played a key
role in ensuring hospitals across the country have the funds to purchase
life-saving equipment, renovate care facilities, and ultimately better care for
patients young and old.
Former superintendent of the Surrey School District Mike McKay is spending
his retirement giving back, getting involved and championing the value of
education. A continuation of what has been a lifelong passion for helping
students activate their potential, McKay currently serves as a strategic
advisor to B.C.’s Ministry of Education, and is an official trustee for the
Cowichan Valley School District.
Her distinguished history of successful hospital fundraising campaigns
includes developing the well-known St. Paul’s Hospital Lights of Hope
campaign, which raises about $2.3 million annually; a $15-million capital
campaign for Kingston Hospital in Ontario, and, more recently; the SMHF
Tulips for Tomorrow campaign, which generated $15 million for the hospital’s
new emergency centre. Adams also launched the 100 Days to Give campaign
while in her current position, which raised $10 million for the Jim Pattison
Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre.
A stellar fundraiser with many big-dollar achievements to her name, Adams’
philanthropy philosophy is that any amount of money can affect change,
and that humble beginnings can keep momentum and grow support for
ideas that would otherwise languish. In a nod to her fundraising roots – as
a young girl raising dollars for rescue animals in Halifax – Adams in part
spends her time outside of SMHF rescuing and fostering dogs from the U.S.
at her home in Surrey.

He is also the project director for the Canadian Self-Regulation Initiative,
established first and foremost to help parents and educators better
understand and reframe child behaviour. The project McKay oversees is
bringing the latest neuroscience research to B.C. classrooms, in the form
of new understandings and strategies that address what is at the core of a
student’s ability to remain focused and to function effectively in class.
During his tenure with the Surrey School District, McKay became
known for his mantra: “every child, every chance, every day.” Under his
leadership, student learning in the district deepened to include critical
thinking and problem-solving skills, adaptability and agility, initiative and
entrepreneurialism, effective oral and written communication, and curiosity
and imagination. Both his legacy and his current initiatives have had a
positive impact on B.C. public education, and have made great strides toward
ensuring all students have the opportunity for a meaningful life as literate,
compassionate, productive and happy citizens.

President's Outstanding Graduate Award,

Amanda Smith-Weston, Bachelor of Arts, Major in
Anthropology
Kourtneigh Rushton, Diploma of Technology in Environmental
Protection, Co-operative Education Option
Since she was a child, Amanda Smith-Weston has dreamed of working in
a museum, and participating in archaeological digs. This desire fueled her
decision to major in anthropology while studying at KPU.
Kourtneigh Rushton selected studies in environmental protection technology
because it fits perfectly with her love of nature. Her program at KPU
combined her passion for the environment with theoretical and practical
skills that she feels have given her the power to contribute to creating a
greener, safer, healthier environment. With her diploma, she hopes to work
in either environmental enforcement or public engagement and awareness
campaigning.
Smith-Weston is proud to be the recipient of the President’s Outstanding
Graduate Award. She feels honoured to be recognized for her determination
to succeed, her ambition, and her dedication to both the KPU and external
communities.
She has faced many challenges on her journey to post-secondary success
– balancing parenthood, school and work, as well as managing a chronic
illness. Sixteen years ago, a young mother battling Crohn’s disease, SmithWeston began her career at KPU. She completes her bachelor of arts this year,
proud to be able to show her sons that through hard work and perseverance,
all of their goals can be achieved.
At KPU, Smith-Weston’s hard work earned her multiple awards, including
the Grace Wolkosky Memorial Award, the Jay Siegal Memorial Award in
Anthropology and the Ernest Westerman Endowed Memorial Award.
This award encourages KPU students to excel in their chosen fields of study and to
participate in university, student and community activities to the benefit of others.
Recipients have completed all their study in one program at KPU; have consistently
shown outstanding ability in the field; have contributed in a significant way to KPU or
community affairs; and may be recommended by faculty.

Receiving this award is important to Rushton, because it recognizes the hard
work and sacrifices she made during her studies to succeed in her program.
If anything, she says the award will only help to energize and drive her to
continue to work hard for the things she wants in her career, and in life.
Rushton was also the recipient of a BC Hydro award during her second year
of study. Outside of classes, Rushton enjoys making holistic natural health
and beauty products, and reading up on holistic health.
Presented annually, the President’s Outstanding Graduate Award encourages KPU
students to excel in their chosen fields of study and to participate in university, student
and community activities to the benefit of others. Recipients have completed all their
studies in one program at KPU; have consistently shown outstanding ability in the
field; have contributed in a significant way to KPU or community affairs; and may be

Heraldry
The Arms of Kwantlen Polytechnic University were presented at a
ceremony on May 4, 1999 by the Right Honourable Romeo LeBlanc,
Governor General of Canada.
The centre shield features ‘The Spirit of KPU’ emblem comprising a
wolf, a salmon, and a river azure as styled by Brandon Gabriel.
At the top of the blue shield, on the left side a lion and on the right a
tiger facing each other in the rampant position (upright on one hind
leg with forelegs outstretched as if attacking). And at the bottom of
the blue shield, on the left a jaguar and on the right a Chinese dragon
also facing each other in the rampant position. All are gold.
At the top in the centre, there is an open book with silver or
white pages, bindings in gold and on top of it, a gold horizontal (in
fess) rectangle (billet) with square bites taken out of the long sides
(bretessed). In modern heraldry, this item is meant to represent a computer chip.
The crest appears above the shield, and is supported by a silver and blue twisted fabric wreath. The
upper rim is set with a simple silver crown, the upper edge decorated with four salmon, looking at each
other in pairs.
Supporting the arms is a green grassy mound, scattered with gold Douglas Fir cones. The mound is
rising from wavy horizontal bands of blue and silver. This is the traditional heraldic representation of
water - either river or ocean.
Convocation
Traditions
On the left is a gold female deer with blue hooves, and her bottom half is a silver fishtail with gold fins.
Around her neck is a wreath of twisted silver and blue cloth. Hanging from the wreath is a green disk with
an open book on it—the pages are silver; the cover is gold.
On the right is a gold eagle with a silver head, with blue talons and beak. Around his neck is a wreath
like the doe’s and hanging from it is a green disk with the heraldic representation of a gold computer chip.
The motto reads: Through Tireless Effort, Knowledge and Understanding.
University Mace
The mace was originally a weapon during the medieval period,
and came to be associated with the prowess and strength of the
knight. Today the mace is a symbol of the University’s authority
to award degrees and diplomas. It indicates the seriousness of
convocation as the University’s most important academic ceremony,
and is a confirmation of the University’s integrity as an academic
institution. The mace is carried by a mace-bearer, who leads the
processional of faculty and students in to and out of the venue where
convocation is held. The mace is usually between four feet and six
feet in length and will incorporate the history and tradition that surround the vision for the University.
An academic mace symbolizes the authority vested in the chancellor to confer university credentials.
This is why the mace is an integral part of convocation.
Maces are often commissioned to commemorate a milestone anniversary or presidential inauguration.
Typically an artist is selected for the honour to develop a highly symbolic design that incorporates the
University’s traditions.
KPU’s mace was carved by Kwantlen First Nation artist Drew Atkins.

Regalia
KPU Honorary Doctorates
Not until they slip into their regalia, do many graduands realize the significance of their convocation
ceremony. For family and friends, the first glimpse of the graduand in cap and gown heralds a milestone
in the life of their loved one.
Standard for Academic Dress
At KPU, all graduates wear a black gown of Oxford shape and a black cap with a black tassel. Graduates
of our bachelor's degree programs wear hoods in the Aberdeen style, made of black pilgrim cloth
and bordered with a one half inch border. The border of each hood is a specific colour that identifies a
particular area of study.
