Dear Friends,
The year 2014 was a landmark year for St. Louis, as well as for St. Louis’ first
children’s museum, The Magic House! While our city commemorated its 250th
birthday, The Magic House celebrated our 35th. We marked both milestones with an
array of festivities, from holding a gala, Big Birthday Bash, to displaying a giant
sculpture of a birthday cake on the Museum’s front porch, created by local artist
and educator Jeffrey Arnold.
Since opening 35 years ago, The Magic House has sparked the imaginations of more
than 12 million visitors. More than 557,000 people visited in 2014 alone. With two
expansive wings and more than 200 exhibits, the Museum is now 10 times bigger
than the whimsical Victorian house we first occupied. And best of all, the children
who first came through our doors in 1979 are all grown up and returning with
children of their own.
While The Magic House has grown and evolved over three and a half decades, our
mission has always remained the same: to provide hands-on learning experiences
that encourage experimentation, creativity and the development of problem-solving
skills within a place of beauty, wonder, joy and magic. We are grateful to the
corporations, foundations and individuals whose generous support made 2014
such a celebration. Our donors, partners and friends really take the cake!

MISSION STATEMENT
The Magic House will engage all children in hands-on
learning experiences that encourage experimentation,
creativity and the development of problem-solving
skills within a place of beauty, wonder, joy and magic.
Sid the Science Kid: The Super-Duper Exhibit!
The Magic House was super-duper excited to unveil a major new nationally
traveling exhibit in January: Sid the Science Kid: The Super-Duper Exhibit!
Created by The Magic House in partnership with The Jim Henson Company,
this hands-on STEM exhibit brings the award-winning PBS Kids TV series to
life. The Jim Henson Company CEO Lisa Henson cut the ribbon and for the first
time ever, kids could step into Sid’s world and become “science kids”
themselves as they explored everyday science questions around Sid’s home,
at school in the Super Fab Lab and on the playground. Using real science tools
and techniques, children investigated simple machines, the laws of motion,
magnetism, air power and the five senses. The exhibit was generously made
possible by The Boeing Company, the Employees Community Fund of Boeing
St. Louis, Sally and Bill Canfield, the Crawford Taylor Foundation, Judy and
Jerry Kent, Monsanto Company and Sigma-Aldrich, with media sponsorship
provided by the Nine Network. Sid the Science Kid: The Super-Duper Exhibit!
is now on a five-year tour of museums nationwide.
For fans that couldn’t get enough of Sid, they could eat pancakes and celebrate their
birthdays with their favorite science kid, too. The Museum held a sampling of special events,
including Breakfast with Sid and Birthday Parties with Sid, full of hands-on experiences
designed for budding scientists who “just gotta know” about the world around them.
The Make-It Workshop
Do-it-yourselfers got a new destination when The Magic House unveiled the Make-It
Workshop in April. The region’s only permanent makers’ space for families, the Make-It
Workshop invites visitors to practice important science, technology, engineering and math
(STEM) and 21st-century skills as they invent, build and create together with real tools and
materials. To celebrate the opening, The Magic House invited teams from FIRST Robotics to
showcase their inventions. The Make-It Workshop was made possible with generous support
from the Earl E. and Myrtle E. Walker Foundation and the William T. Kemper Foundation—
Commerce Bank, Trustee, with in-kind support provided by Tacony Corporation.

St. Louis International Play Port
The Magic House went up, up and away with a new exhibit
that opened at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport in May.
The Museum unveiled the St. Louis International Play Port,
a transportation-themed exhibit located at the entrance to
Concourse C. Now kids’ imaginations can soar as they climb
aboard a child-sized plane, a Metro train and even some
automobiles. Our first permanent installation offsite, the exhibit
first took off when the social media platform Rally St. Louis
asked the public for suggestions on improving the community.
Citizens responded that a kid-friendly play space at the airport
would be just the ticket! With donations from Enterprise
Rent-A-Car, Carr Lane Manufacturing Co., the St. Louis
Convention & Visitors Commission, Bi-State Development
Agency/Metro and Jane and Dave Peacock, as well as
private donations generated through Rally St. Louis, the
exhibit is the perfect stop for traveling families on the go.
The Math Path
The Magic House headed down a new path in August—
the Math Path, that is! With support from the federal
Institute of Museum and Library Services, MasterCard
and the Edward Chase Garvey Memorial Foundation,
The Magic House renovated and expanded the popular
math exhibit, originally installed in 1997. The new addition
equals more math learning and fun, plus it supports state
and national math standards. The Museum also developed
Math for Early Learners, a new professional development
workshop for educators to help them integrate hands-on
math learning into the classroom. With components on
estimation, geometry, operations, patterns, symmetry,
tessellations and time, the new and improved Math Path
sums up all the number know-how kids need to succeed in
the 21st century.

PROGRAMS &
PARTNERSHIPS
Good to Grow!
In 2014, The Magic House sowed the seeds for Good to Grow! an initiative of the Association of
Children’s Museums to encourage children and families to practice four important activities: eat
good foods, exercise, reduce screen time and play outdoors. With funding from the Institute of
Museum and Library Services, the Museum launched an effort in partnership with St. Louis
Children’s Hospital to become a health resource in the St. Louis community.
Through this federal grant, The Magic House hired a Community Health Initiative Project Manager
and formed a Health Advisory Committee made up of representatives from health organizations
to advise us on issues and best practices in family wellness. The grant is enabling key health
messages to take root throughout the Museum, as well as in the community. The Museum’s new
Good to Grow! brochure, web page and signage are encouraging visitors to get a hop, skip and
jump start on healthy practices.
The Magic House offered an assortment of programs where families could stretch
their muscles and their minds:
Get Active
Eat Healthy Foods
Reduce Screen Time
Get Outdoors
• On the first Friday evening of every month, the Museum holds Fitness Fun Fridays, sponsored
by Centene Corporation. The program provides free admission to children who complete
fitness challenges and in 2014 featured a variety of health and fitness activities, from Kung Fu to CrossFit.
• The Magic House observed National Get Outdoors Day in June with fresh-air fun on the Museum’s grounds. Visitors punched
a “Passport to Play” by visiting booths hosted by community partners including the YMCA, Live Well StL, Trailnet, Gateway
Greening and Governor Nixon’s 100 Missouri Mile Challenge.
• In September, The Magic House hosted a Fall Farm Festival in partnership with the Missouri and Illinois Farm Bureaus and
the St. Louis District Dairy Council. Visitors participated in agricultural activities and learned about the dietary benefits of
dairy and fresh produce.
• We also observed the Worldwide Day of Play. In celebration of this global event that encourages families to turn off the TV,
The Magic House partnered with the Isaac Bruce Foundation on a special day focused on active play.
• Children happily haunted The Magic House at our Happy, Healthy Halloween event sponsored by St. Louis Children’s
Hospital. This all-day, candy-free celebration included half-price admission for costumed kids, a trick-or-healthy-treat
scavenger hunt throughout the Museum and even
a monster mash dance party.
• Throughout 2014, The Magic House also hosted family
wellness classes presented by hospitals and health
organizations that promote healthy habits, from car
seat safety to preparing family-friendly meals.
All of these Good to Grow! efforts are designed to
ensure that The Magic House, and the children we serve,
are growing strong!

North St. Louis County Programs
The Magic House continued to branch out in the
community, especially with programs focused on science,
technology, engineering and math (STEM). A generous
grant from the Express Scripts Foundation supported
STEM-related outreach programs in classrooms and
STEM family celebrations at the Museum for all of the
elementary schools in the Ritenour School District. The
grant also included free admission, bus transportation to
the Museum and STEM activity materials for students,
their families and teachers. This collaboration between
The Magic House, the Express Scripts Foundation and
Ritenour demonstrates our shared dedication to
supporting STEM achievement in North St. Louis County.
The Magic House is committed to offering free
learning experiences to the children, families and schools
of underserved areas of our community, and especially
those in North St. Louis County. The Museum is striving
to find meaningful ways to respond to the events that unfolded in Ferguson and other parts of our community in 2014. During the
area’s unrest, for example, we provided free educational programs at the Ferguson Municipal Public Library so children could be
actively engaged in learning while the start of school was postponed. The Magic House’s effort to provide beauty, wonder, joy and
magic to all children is ongoing.

CELEBRATIONS
Cakeway to the West
Most birthday celebrations only last one day, but at The Magic House,
the festivities went on for the entire year. And since no birthday party is
complete without a cake, we kicked off our celebration with a gigantic
one! The Magic House was one of 250 landmarks selected by STL250 to
participate in Cakeway to the West, a project commemorating St. Louis’
quarter millennium by displaying unique, fiberglass cake sculptures around
the region. The Magic House commissioned local artist and educator Jeffrey
Arnold to design our four-foot-tall cake, which welcomed guests on the
Museum’s front porch throughout 2014.
35th Birthday Renovation
Since The Magic House first opened its doors in 1979, we’ve welcomed more than 12 million visitors. That means that more than 24
million feet have jumped in front of the Shadow Walls and 60 million fingers have touched the Electrostatic Generator. Because
35 years of hands-on enthusiasm can take a toll, The Magic House launched an effort to renovate the original Victorian building,
making it as fresh and engaging as it was for our first generation of visitors. Favorite exhibits, like the Shadow Walls, got a facelift.
Others, like Balls in Motion, Making Sense of the Five Senses and Magnets, were expanded, and the entire house was
refurbished with new carpeting, wallcoverings and paint. This extreme Museum makeover was generously made possible by
longtime donors and friends Judy and Jerry Kent.
Great Friend to Kids
A Grand Birthday Party
Friends are the best birthday gifts anyone can have.
The Magic House felt fortunate to present our 2014
Great Friend to Kids Award to the Saigh Foundation
at the Museum’s annual donor recognition breakfast
in November. Since 2001, the Saigh Foundation has
supported A Dose of Magic, a program that enables
The Magic House to provide monthly hands-on arts and
science experiences to ill and recovering children in five
St. Louis pediatric hospitals. The program also allows
children’s health organizations to have free, exclusive
use of the Museum when it is closed to the public. The
Magic House is so grateful to our friends at the Saigh
Foundation for providing just what the doctor ordered:
the joy of hands-on learning and A Dose of Magic for
the children and families who need it most.
In June, The Magic House reveled in grand style with Happy Birthday to You!
A Grand Birthday Party presented by Fifth Third Bank and chaired by Cheri
Fromm and Peggy Sly. This very special event was hosted by the Museum’s Grand
Committee, who invited all generations to enjoy jugglers, balloon artistry, magic tricks
and more. Partygoers celebrated on the shores of Sandcastle Beach, the Museum’s
“sandsational” summer exhibit featuring a giant sandcastle with a birthday theme,
made possible by Prairie Farms Dairy and North Star Frozen Treats. The icing on the
cake was that the event raised more than $35,000 for the Grandparent Scholarship Fund,
which provides free educational experiences for children in need.
Big Birthday Bash Gala
The Museum’s Friends Committee threw us the biggest blowout of all in September: the Big Birthday Bash.
Chaired by Randy Costas and Melissa Swank, the gala welcomed 350 partygoers who celebrated with dinner,
dancing, champagne, cupcakes and a birthday video generously produced by Wells Fargo Advisors. With
support from presenting sponsor Edward Jones, major sponsors Sally and Bill Canfield and Monsanto
Company and technology sponsor KellyMitchell, the gala raised more than $153,000. These proceeds are
supporting The Magic House’s birthday wish to provide free field trips, outreach programs and other educational
services to 350,000 underserved children. Other donors to the Museum’s 35th Birthday Education Program Fund
who are helping our birthday wish come true include the Albrecht Family Foundation, the Mary Ranken Jordan
and Ettie A. Jordan Charitable Foundation and Target.
