ACTIVITIES DRIVING RESULTS
Global trade and investment
Local industry outreach
Officials from the Columbus Region regularly travel to Asia and
Europe to promote the Columbus Region and meet with growing
companies. Also, in partnership with the Brookings Institution,
Columbus 2020 has undertaken a full market assessment of
existing exporters within the Columbus Region and convened
several meetings of exporters and exporter service providers to
inform the launch of the Columbus Metropolitan Export Initiative,
a key component of the overall Columbus Region global trade and
investment strategy.
The Columbus 2020 team and regional economic development
partners completed 475 visits in 2013 with companies that have
operations in the Columbus Region. Eighty five percent of those
visits were made to companies that comprise the Columbus
Region’s economic base. Local industry outreach identifies the
risks and opportunities that businesses face in this dynamic
economy, and also provides opportunity for the Columbus 2020
team to connect businesses with available resources.

ACTIVITIES DRIVING RESULTS
Attraction and expansion
of market-leading companies
Last year alone, the Columbus 2020 team executed 84 business
development missions in 31 U.S. markets and six international
markets. These missions focus on meeting face-to-face with
hundreds of growing businesses and executives.
Back home, the team regularly hosts global thought leaders from
the site selection industry to speak, analyze Columbus Region
strengths and weaknesses, and become aware of the Columbus
Region for future location opportunities.
The Columbus Region’s business development activities led to the
identification and qualification of more than 200 projects in 2013
that were managed by the Columbus 2020 team.
Acceleration of high-growth companies
Columbus 2020 conducts regular outreach to high-growth
companies and works to connect them to more than 15 incubator
facilities in the metro area. Strong partnerships with TechColumbus
and the 10X Startup Accelerator help to foster growth and
connectivity within the Columbus Region’s burgeoning tech sector.
Economic research
In addition to providing customized research to businesses
looking to locate or expand in the Columbus Region, Columbus
2020 conducts ongoing analysis of our economy, workforce and
economic sectors. Two notable research projects conducted last
year included:
Columbus Region Workforce Analysis
Along with the Site Selection Group, Columbus 2020
undertook its first regional workforce assessment to gain
comprehensive insight into the Columbus Region labor shed.
The study revealed that the Columbus Region’s labor shed,
or area from which it draws workers, extends outside the
Region’s borders and includes more than 1.4 million workers
within a total population of nearly 2.7 million.
Columbus Region Logistics Council
Roadmap Analysis
Along with the Columbus Region Logistics Council, Columbus
2020 initiated a full analysis of the 2007 Logistics Industry
roadmap. The roadmap identifies competitive strengths and
offers insights into the future of the logistics sector.
Marketing and promotion
The multifaceted marketing strategy executed by Columbus
2020 educates the general public, business decision makers
and location consultants about why the Columbus Region is an
ideal business location. A robust digital presence is anchored by
a recently relaunched website that’s yielding record-breaking
increases in user engagement, while an integrated advertising
plan is complemented by media outreach that garners placements
in local, national and international publications.

WHY GROWTH MATTERS
As one of the largest regulated utilities in the state
of Ohio, AEP Ohio’s job is to deliver electricity to
more than 1.5 million customers in 61 counties
where we live and work. But it is our passion
to help make these communities shine even
brighter. We do that by investing aggressively
in infrastructure improvements and economic
development to help existing companies thrive
and attract new business.
Ultimately our focus on economic development
is about building healthy economies to sustain
and grow healthy Ohio communities. We are
privileged to have our corporate headquarters
in Ohio, one of the largest and fastest growing
state economies in the nation, and specifically in
the Columbus Region, home to our state capital
and renowned top location for business. The
economy of the Columbus Region is large and
diverse, and it boasts enormous competitive
assets – reasonable energy costs, available land,
a capable workforce and strong leadership –
that provide the foundation to our collective
economic success.
Growth benefits the community in many ways. It
expands the tax base, providing more dollars to
local and state governments to deliver a range of
infrastructure and services, including parks and
schools, all which further accelerate development.
It creates sustainable job opportunities that have
a positive ripple effect through the economy.
Embracing growth helps to diversify the economy
and gives us better control over our destiny.
It allows for the inflow of new talent, skill sets
and ideas. It makes the most of entrepreneurial
spirit, dynamism and diversity of people and
enterprises.
By Pablo Vegas
President and
Chief Operating
Officer, AEP Ohio
Like our state and local economies, AEP Ohio’s
success depends greatly upon the nature and
quantity of businesses that operate within our
boundaries. Growth increases industrial and
commercial activity in our service territory. The
benefit is also felt by our ratepayers as the costs
of the infrastructure needed to deliver electricity
get spread across more customers.
We are proud to promote economic growth
and business development in Central Ohio, and
throughout the state, to help build a healthier,
more sustainable and brighter future for all of us.

“Heartland chose to invest
in our future and the future
of the Columbus Region
via Columbus 2020 when times were very
dark for the state of Ohio and for the nation.
Economic stimulus, when desperately needed,
has to move at the speed of business. Columbus
2020 provides valuable information, is a barrier
breaker for development, and is the Buck
Rinehart of the 2000’s by telling the Columbus
Region success story to the world. Forward
thinkers finish first, and Columbus is leading
the recovery in part through the efforts of
Columbus 2020 and their investors.”

There’s no such thing as too much experience, as long
as you balance that knowledge with a desire to provide
the best, modern customer service. As Ohio’s longest
operating workers’ compenstion TPA we’ve seen our
share of fads, changes and johnny-come-latelys. But the
one trend that never goes out of style is doing right for
your customers. If experience has taught us anything,
it’s that customers never tire of being the center of our
world - and that’s the way we intend to keep it.

“Economic development should be
a top priority for every CEO and
business owner and operator,
and it certainly is for us at Honda Marysville. We are proud to
partner with Columbus 2020 not only because of the impact on
our future business and communities, but also the continuous
improvement of the quality of life for all Central Ohioans.
Columbus 2020 is a team of many who are committed to
building and creating a better Central Ohio, and a great
example of what working together as a team can accomplish.
Our future success in business is a direct reflection and
byproduct of the individual successes of those who chose us
for their automotive needs. Without a strong, vibrant workforce
and high quality communities dedicated to education and
development of future business leaders, economic downturn
is almost a certain. However, with the focus and coordinated
effort of the high quality professionals within Columbus 2020,
the future of Central Ohio and its residents is sure to be
one of growth and prosperity. Ultimately, Columbus 2020 is
exceptionally driven at creating a bigger and brighter future for
Central Ohio, and it is with that commitment that we excitedly
offer our full support.”
