Where else but the Glamorgan Heritage Coast and Countryside? It is a beautiful region where history tumbles out to greet you around every corner. In fact it’s like Wales in miniature. Everything in close proximity. Castles, ancient inns, mysterious mansions, rugged coast and inspiring churches, all contained within 28 miles of coastal scenery that also includes villages, towns, history and legends. Everything you could possibly want in a great holiday is here. Porthcawl If you are looking for something a little more active, this is the place as the area combines natural and historic attractions with up to the minute sports and activities, particularly surfing and other water sports. It’s also a modern thriving community with fascinating ancient towns offering local produce and large ‘out-of-town’ centres with nationally known chain stores. Visit Porthcawl during September and you’ll see ‘The King’ everywhere! You’ll see any number of quiffs, plenty of blue suede shoes, and all shapes and sizes squeezing into their finest Elvis jumpsuits. Hundreds of fans make sweet music in the town every year to pay homage to their hero at what is fast becoming one of the biggest and most-loved Elvis Festivals in the world. Whether you visit during the festival, or at any other time, Porthcawl’s Coney Beach Pleasure Park has all the funfair thrills that a family holiday demands, as well as souvenir shops, restaurants and bars to suit all tastes and water sports a plenty! The coast’s historic maritime history can also be viewed at the Harbour Quarter, with its ancient lighthouse and watchtower. The traditional British seaside holiday experience is alive and kicking in Porthcawl, just as it is at Barry Island. By that we mean sandcastles, amusements and ice-cream in the summer; seaside walks, coffee and blowing out the cobwebs in the winter… and the finest fish and chips all year round! Barry Island is the mecca for all fans of the TV comedy show Gavin and Stacey, who love visiting the resort to see where some of the series’ most popular scenes were filmed. From Marco’s Café to the ‘slots’ arcade and the beach, Barry Island has become familiar to millions thanks to the show, while most of the other scenes from the series were also filmed within the Glamorgan Heritage Coast and Countryside. Tread the boards of Penarth Pier, which is quintessentially British and oozing with nostalgia. Built in 1895, it is reminiscent of more gentle times and is one of only two surviving pleasure piers in South Wales, the other being Mumbles. For elegant gentility, visit Penarth, which has a style and atmosphere all of its own. Only a few miles from Cardiff, the Victorian town has shopping, parks and seafront gardens, while at the foot of the hill is the Esplanade with its restaurants and cafes on the seafront. During the summer months you can also take to the sea to explore the Bristol Channel on board the historic Balmoral ship or Waverley paddle steamer from Penarth Pier or Porthcawl’s Harbour. • gavin and stacey • paddle steamer sailings • traditional resorts • amusement arcades Whitmore Bary, Barry Island Penarth Pier 6 www.glamorganheritagecoast.com www.glamorganheritagecoast.com 7 8 Glamorgan Heritage Coast • rugged cliffs • secluded coves • coastal walks • varied beach life Wild and wonderful… www.glamorganheritagecoast.com 9 Wild and wonderful If you would rather spend your time on some secluded beach or cove, then you’ll love the fact that you are only ever minutes away from a beach in the Glamorgan Heritage Coast and Countryside. Not when it comes to the Glamorgan Heritage Coast and Countryside, as each of our towns has its own unique character and atmosphere. We have seven towns each brimming with variety and charm, but if you had just one day to pack them all in where would you start? Here is our suggestion… Begin your day with a touch of class at Penarth Marina amongst the yachts before popping into the town to explore the Victorian architecture. Then head for Barry, famous for its maritime history, before adding some religious heritage to your day through the quaint narrow streets of ancient Llantwit Major. shopping, then head for the Rhiw Shopping Centre or the traditional indoor market, or one of the many outdoor street markets throughout the year. For crafts and antiques there is nowhere better than Cowbridge where boutique shops and restaurants line an ancient Roman Road. It’s a great place to take a leisurely lunch and foodies in particular will enjoy visiting the town during its annual food and drink festival each Autumn. Next on your route would be the market town of Bridgend, which also hosts many popular festivals including the new Food ‘Feastival’. If you’ve got the appetite for On the edge of Bridgend Town, close to the M4 Motorway, is the huge Bridgend Designer Outlet containing nearly 100 top brands stores, many offering discounted prices. While you are there you may want to catch a film at the area’s largest cinema complex. Alternatively, ‘head for the hills’ to Maesteg, nestling in the valley, or travel on to Porthcawl on Southern Wales’ Golden Coast for a sunset stroll along the Esplanade. You could then finish your day by settling down for a meal at one of our many fine restaurants or the dozens of country pubs which are at the heart of local village life. Did you know, for instance, that the very first radio transmission over water was made along the Glamorgan Heritage Coast at Lavernock Point by Guglielmo Marconi in 1897, or that the United States of America may not have existed in 1776 if it weren’t for Doctor Richard Pryce, a man born in the Heritage Hills? Were you aware that the genius behind modern supersonic flight, Sir Morion Morgan, was born in this area in 1912, or that the X-ray process was discovered here by Sir William Morgan in 1785 and the patron saints of Wales and Ireland were educated here at a university established by St Illtud in Llantwit Major in 500AD? You may not have known that Hollywood may never have existed if a man from Southern Wales, Griffith J Griffith hadn’t donated over 3000 acres of parkland to the city of Los Angeles in 1896 or that the legendary King Arthur was born and eventually died in this area. We are very proud of this and all the other legacies that have made Wales what it is today. If you really want to get to know us then why not visit Cosmeston Medieval Village and see how our ancient ancestors lived. The feel of the village is so authentic that it has been used as a filming location for the BBC TV show ‘Merlin’. Our past is not just in our buildings and legacy though. It’s in our people, their lives and their memories, whose rich cultural heritage goes back to before Roman times. Traditions that link today’s modern, busy world with a time that was once more sedate and relaxed. Along with a thriving modern community, we can promise you a Celtic land of quaint villages, ancient inns, and impressive castles. A land where poets and saints were educated, and where life continues pretty much as it has since King Arthur’s days. Ogmore Castle Did you know that Wales has more castles per square mile than any other country in Europe, and did you realise that some of our ancient sites, such as Tinkinswood near St Nicholas, are older than Stonehenge or that Wales was the very first industrial nation and left its mark throughout the world? If last year’s Ryder Cup being held in Wales has given you the golf bug, you’ll enjoy playing on the many superb golf courses that span the length of the Glamorgan Heritage Coast and Countryside, including the world famous Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, Southerndown, Pyle and Kenfig, Cottrell Park, and the Vale of Glamorgan Golf and Country Club. Alternatively, if you just want to ‘putt’ around with the family, then Porthkerry Country Park near Barry and Griffin Park in Porthcawl are perfect. Keen ramblers and gentle strollers alike will love tackling the 14 mile long Heritage Coast Path which offers unparalleled coastal views, while the 13-mile Ogwr Ridgeway Walk will reward you with some of the most aweinspiring mountain and countryside views anywhere in Wales. For a bigger challenge, join the 72-mile Millennium Heritage Trail or take the Bridgend Circular Walk, which covers just 20 easily negotiated miles in three sections. You can also discover some of our finest local walks during the Vale of Glamorgan Walking Festival in May and the Bridgend Love2walk festival in October. Another great way to see the area is by treking on horseback from one of our many riding centres. We’ve already mentioned our excellent surfing conditions, and our coastline is also ideal for trying your hand at bush-craft, scuba diving, rock climbing and sea kayaking. What about a day at sea along the coast or aboard a charter fishing vessel? Or maybe you would prefer fishing inland at one of the specialist trout or coarse fisheries. Turning up the pace a bit, you may want to put your pedal to the metal at Wales’ only floodlit outdoor karting track at Llandow, have a go at quad biking, or battle your friends and family at paintball or in the Wales’ number one Quasar Centre at Barry Island. Golf 26 www.glamorganheritagecoast.com www.glamorganheritagecoast.com 27 Sand Sledging Merthyr Mawr Make a Ewenny Pottery Visit Ewenny Pottery, the oldest family-run pottery in Wales and watch the experts at work, or ‘throw’ a pot for yourself as a tangible memory of your visit, then have lunch in the Pottery Tea rooms. You can take to the water avoiding the traffic and travel from Penarth Marina to Cardiff Bay and back, or walk or cycle along the spectacular barrage while enjoying some spectacular views of the Millennium Stadium and Millennium Centre, or you can also go by foot or bike over the newly-opened Pont y Werin bridge across to the Cardiff International Sports Village.
