ROB Wiley knows footballers but, more
importantly, encourages footballers to know
themselves.
He said he has always tried to encourage young
men to have self-belief. It is a philosophy he has
embraced in his varied coaching roles, dating back
to when he coached Perth in 1988 and 1989, to
West Coast where he was a selector and specialist
assistant, then most recently at Carlton where he
worked once again with former teammate and
long-time friend Mick Malthouse.
Now the legend of WA football who played 179
games with Perth (including the 1976 and 1977
premiership teams and eight fairest and bests), 95
for Richmond (including the 1980 premiership) and
18 as an inaugural West Coast player in 1987), is in
his first year in charge of East Fremantle.
The Sharks have split their season with three
wins and three losses heading into Round 8 when
they take on the unbeaten reigning premiers
Subiaco in WA Football’s One Life Round.
One Life Round is an initiative that aims to raise
awareness of mental health and suicide prevention
using football as a vehicle to reduce the stigma
associated with discussing these topics.
Former West Coast Eagles premiership player
Adam Selwood and West Coast Fever netballer
Courtney Bruce are spreading the message as One
Life Ambassador and activities will be encouraged
at all football games in WA from Year 8 and above.
Blue armbands will be provided to raise
awareness among players, coaches and officials
about mental health, and encourage discussion on
the day.
The message of the One Life Round is ‘It’s okay to
talk ’
Wiley said he had a positive approach to
coaching, while being hard and honest.
“I want players to dig deep to understand
themselves and the talents they have in many areas
of life,” Wiley said.
“Everyone is different and some open up more
than others. It’s about asking the right questions as
much as it is giving them a forum to talk.
“As a coach I want to take a holistic approach and
get to know the players more as people and not just
as footballers.”
On the field, the Sharks are in a similar position
to last year. At the same stage in 2015, they had won
four and lost two games. However, they only went
on to win two more games for the entire season.
“It was interesting coming to a club not really
knowing anyone on the list. Seeing them go
through the pre-season, I was pleased with their
attitude, thirst for knowledge and their want to
rebound from last year,” he said.
““We are still learning and growing as a group
and this week against Subiaco will be a great
challenge.”
Wiley said while the Sharks
were making the most of the
experience brought to the side by
the returning Brett Peake and the
likes of Jamie McNamara, they
needed to keep one eye on the
future of player development at
the club.
“Brett was playing at North
Fremantle and asked if he could
come and do pre-season with
us. There was no guarantee he
was going to play but having
the experience of guys like
him and J-Mac (McNamara) is
no doubt helping our playing
group.
“However we also want
to keep introducing young
players into the side and
those who are ready will
5
positivity

a Wiley approach
get their opportunity. There is good internal
pressure for positions at the moment and
that is healthy for our development and
success as a club.
““The group is coming together and they
enjoy each other’s company and hard work.
““You need an ounce of good luck in this
league but you also have to work hard and
prepare well and our boys are doing that.”
Mental health facts:
•
Every year suicide accounts for 32 percent of deaths among males aged 15-24. It’s not
just the men either, there has been a recent spike in suicide among young females.
•
About 45 percent of people will also struggle with some sort of mental illness
throughout their lifetime.
•
As a key community stakeholder, football and netball are in a position to change this. “Everyone is
different and some
open up more
than others. It’s
about asking the
right questions as
much as it is giving
them a forum to
talk.” Rob Wiley

Collectables
During 2016, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you to
write or email if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away at home.
It’s always great to receive emails from Budget
readers about some pieces of memorabilia
that have featured in this column.
Better still is when a reader is actually able
to provide some snippet of information that
I’ve been seeking.
This week, I had two such messages about
the set of Sunday Times posters that featured
in last week’s Collectables.
By examining the careers of the players
who featured on what I believe is a set of eight
posters, I had already been able to narrow the
likely production date to somewhere between
1963 and 1965.
For the record, the posters I had seen
featured Lorne Cook (C), Tony Casserley (EF),
Derek Chadwick (EP), Barry Cable (P), Garry
Scott (SF), and Ron Evans (WP).
But, aside from the names of six of the
players who appeared on the posters, I knew
precious little else about them.
That was until WAFL collector John, from
Melbourne, emailed to provide his memories
of the posters. John recalled they were
obtained by filling out a coupon from the
Sunday Times kids’ page. The posters arrived
by mail some time later.
This fit perfectly with Les’s memory,
though Les thinks the kids might have had to
provide some sort of payment along with the
coupon.
Les remembered buying the Chadwick,
Casserley and Cable posters at the time and
he had some inkling that the Subiaco version
may have featured Brian Sarre.
John, meanwhile, was certain that the
Swans version featured Fred Castledine.
But he was struggling to work out how
he would have collected them in the period
between 1963 and 1965, when he would have
been quite young. He wondered whether
there might have been two sets with identical
layouts, the later set dating to about 1967.
I can see several hours of research at the
State Library might be the only way to solve
this one. Unless there’s another Budget reader
out there with some memory of these?
Undoubtedly the highlight of last weekend
for me was the Swan Districts Football Club’s
inaugural Hall of Fame induction night.
I grew up with a healthy hatred of many
of the former players I saw at the function on
Saturday night. Not because of anything they
had done (big Ron Boucher excluded) but
because they were just so good and I always
left Bassendean after a big loss.
But it was a huge pleasure to see the likes
of Stan Nowotny, Keith Narkle, Don Holmes,
Don Langsford, Garry Sidebottom, Travis
Edmonds and even Boucher inducted. Of
course, there were plenty of the stars of the
1960s inducted, too.
Collectables-wise, there were a couple of
items on offer.
As with the Hall of Fame functions at most
WAFL clubs, Swans produced a souvenir book
including profiles of each of the 26 inaugural
inductees. At $30, it’s a must-have for any
Swan Districts collector.
But Swans took it a step further
than the other clubs, producing a set of
commemorative bottles of wine. Each bottle
featured one of the inductees and a complete
set will set you back $750.
That may be a tad expensive for some
collectors, but I bet there’s some Swans fans
out there who wouldn’t mind buying one or
two of the bottles.
While I was out at Bassendean, I took the
opportunity to look over the club’s excellent
memorabilia display in the Past Players’ Lounge.
Among the items in the display cabinet
were six of the commemorative Weekend
News coins that used to be used for the coin
toss on Grand Final day. The coins featured the
colours of each of the competing teams – one
set of colours on each
side of the coin.
Now, I’ve always wondered about these.
Who got to keep the coin? Was it the winner?
If not, then what happened to the coin after
the game? And how did they later fall into
the hands of some of the WAFL clubs? Or was
more than one coin made each year?
Nobody has been able to answer my
questions, especially given the Weekend News
has long been extinct.
So, I’ll put the question to Budget readers
and see what comes back.
Finally for this week, I couldn’t help but
point out a little rarity that recently appeared
at auction in Tasmania, of all places. This 32mm
diameter badge is an absolute beauty and
was made by Chas Sheridan, who started the
iconic WA badge-making company Sheridans
in 1914.
Sheridans operates only out of Florence St
in West Perth these days, but when this badge
was made Chas Sheridan also had the Austral
Engraving Company at 842 Hay St.
Sheridan started at 842 Hay St in about
1925 and was there until about 1934, so the
badge clearly dates to that period.
It was sold privately after being removed
from the auction.

BAD NEIGHBOURS 2
(UNIVERSAL Pictures)
Returning stars Seth Rogen, Zac Efron and Rose Byrne are
joined by Chloë Grace Moretz for Bad Neighbours 2, the
follow-up to 2014’s most popular original comedy.
Nicholas Stoller again directs in a film that follows what happens
when the will of parenthood goes against the bonds of sisterhood.
Now that Mac (Rogen) and Kelly Radner (Byrne) have a second baby
on the way, they are ready to make the final move into adulthood: the
suburbs. But just as they thought they’d reclaimed the neighbourhood
and were safe to sell, they learn that the new occupants next door are
a sorority even more out of control than Teddy (Efron) and his brothers
ever dreamed of being.
Tired of their school’s sexist, restrictive system, the unorthodox
ladies of Kappa Nu have decided to start a house where they can do
whatever the hell they want. When Shelby (Moretz) and her sisters,
Beth (Kiersey Clemons) and Nora (Beanie Feldstein), find the perfect
place just off campus, they won’t let the fact that it’s located on a quiet
street stand in their way of parties as epic as the guys throw.
Forced to turn to the one ex-neighbour with the skills to bring down
the new Greeks next door, the Radners—alongside best friends Jimmy
(Ike Barinholtz) and Paula (Carla Gallo)—bring in charismatic Teddy as
their secret weapon. If he can infiltrate the sorority and charm his way
through it, the thirtysomethings will shutter the Kappas’ home. But if
they think that their neighbours are going down without a fight, they
have severely underestimated the power of youthful ingenuity and
straight-up crazy.
Bad Neighbours 2 releases on May 5. #badneighbours2

THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE
(SONY PICTURES)
In the 3D animated comedy, The Angry
Birds Movie, we’ll finally find out why
the birds are so angry.
The movie takes us to an island populated
entirely by happy, flightless birds – or almost
entirely.
In this paradise, Red (Jason Sudeikis, We’re
the Millers, Horrible Bosses), a bird with a
temper problem, speedy Chuck (Josh Gad
in his first animated role since Frozen), and
the volatile Bomb (Danny McBride, This is
the End, Eastbound and Down) have always
been outsiders. But when the island is visited
by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to these
unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs
are up to.
Featuring a hilarious, all-star voice cast
that includes Bill Hader (Trainwreck, Inside
Out), Maya Rudolph (Bridesmaids) and
Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), as well
as Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele), Kate
McKinnon (Saturday Night Live, next year’s
Ghostbusters) and Tony Hale (Veep, Arrested
Development).
The Angry Birds Movie is in cinemas on May
12.

Perth
Swan Districts
v
It is the title no team wants. And for the combatants of this
round eight match, this content could be the last chance to
avoid the dubious honour.
After six clashes apiece in 2016 Perth and Swan Districts have won
just won match each.
Victory could kickstart the winner’s season while defeat may well
condemn the loser to the wooden spoon.
Perth’s confidence lifted after its round three triumph over
Claremont. But in their following four matches the Demons have
struggled against league leaders Subiaco and South Fremantle plus the
two WAFL-AFL aligned clubs, East Perth and Peel.
Earl Spalding’s defensive unit has been forced to work overtime and
Michael Sinclair has been a shining light in the back zone.
The Demons’ more experienced players Clint Jones, Liam McKenna,
Julian Jacobs and Brett Wolfenden are regularly among the team’s best
contributors.
But if the club is to turn the corner at league level it needs youngsters
Taran Etto, Lennon Marlin, Marshall Jones and Sam Garstone to become
more significant to the team’s high performance level.
The Demons’ woes have been underlined up forward with Callum
Walley their leading goal scorer with 5.6.
Curiously, Perth has kicked two more points than Swan Districts this
season. Unfortunately, the Demons have conceded 88 more points.
Swans coach Greg Harding will be pleased his team hasn’t been
blown away in matches but finding an effective way into the forward
50m zone has been his biggest issue.
The black and whites rely heavily on Justin Simpson’s rebound skills
CLAREMONT v SOUTH FREMANTLE
After a false start Claremont should be
returning to its temporary home, the
Showground, for the first time this season.
The venue won’t matter to South
Fremantle. Todd Curley’s unit has shown it
can be more than just highly competitive
regardless of the location.
The Tigers battled valiantly in Kulin last
weekend but not even the contributions
of the league’s equal-leading goalkicker
Darcy Cameron (four goals for 16 in 2016),
defender Dylan Ross and ruckman Mitch
Andrews could stop West Perth’s finish.
South Fremantle was stung by its first
loss of the season – to league powerhouse
Subiaco – last round.
Yet Zac Strom, Shane Hockey and Jacob
Dragovich were encouraging for the
Bulldogs’ long-term planning.
» Michael Sinclair (P)
off half back. Harding has also been impressed by the run-with skills
of South Hedland recruit Brayden Hackett.
Ricky Cary remains the key focus near the big sticks– he has eight
goals in 2016 – however, Swans miss more spark within the arc.
SUBIACO v EAST FREMANTLE
Twenty-five years ago Rob Wiley was a key
figure in guiding Jarrad Schofield towards
Australian football’s top level.
Now, the former apprentice is ready to
show the master how far he has progressed
when the WAFL’s trendsetters, Subiaco, take
on East Fremantle.
Wiley, now at the helm of the Sharks, was
a West Coast assistant coach when Schofield,
the dual premiership winning coach at the
Lions, was blooded into the AFL.
Interestingly, Subiaco will give Wiley
a yardstick by which he can judge the
development of his East Fremantle unit,
which clings to fourth spot with a 3-3 record.
To make matters worse the Lions showed
off another offensive weapon last week with
Ben Sokol’s seven-goal haul.
WEST PERTH v PEEL
The new season has been a bit like a bag
of lollies for West Perth. There has been a
bit of everything but too much licorice for
the liking.
Yet the Falcons can be in the top five
at 5pm with victory over Peel. But they
will have to play better than they have for
much of this campaign.
And that is where Andrew Strijk, Shane
Nelson – returning from injury, Joel Leeson
and Jay van Berlo are needed to lift the
red and blue effort. Luke Meadows has
also emerged as a key element to the West
Perth performance.
The
Thunder
have
maintained
consistency despite the heavy movement
of players between the WAFL and AFL as
Fremantle struggles at the top level.
If Shane Yarran remains in the Peel
jumper, the Falcons have got an early
defensive headache.

School footy kicks off
For many, the start of Term 2 signals the
start of the junior community football
season. For an increasing numbers of
players, it also signals the start of the
interschool football season, including
the Redimed Cup for senior high school
boys and the Freo Dockers Cup for
schoolgirls.
West Australian Football Commission
(WAFC) Manager School and Junior
Competitions Darren Davis said the delivery
of Australian Football was an important
partnership between schools and community
clubs.
“School sport is integral to the health of
the game in WA and in the education and
development of all students,” he said.
“The WAFC works closely with key advisory
groups, including the Education Advisory
Group, Primary School Football Advisory
Committee and the Secondary School
Football Advisory Committee, in designing
and implementing quality football education
and participation programs.
“We are fortunate to have wonderful
program partners in Redimed and the
WAFC
Fremantle Football Club and we thank them
for their continued support of school football.”
Redimed Cup
The Redimed Cup offers a well organised and
high quality competition catering for over
3000 upper school students from country and
metropolitan schools throughout WA.
Season 2016 marks the 29th year of the
competition which is co-ordinated by the
West Australian Football Commission and
the Secondary School Football Advisory
Committee (SSFAC).
The competition is played during Term
2, after school on Wednesdays over 2 x 25
minute halves. There are five metropolitan
regions and different divisions to cater for the
size and strength of schools.
Barry Cable Division (A Grade) -- Strong
football schools seeking quality competition
with games played across regions.
Glen Jakovich Division (B Grade) -- Schools
of medium strength, seeking quality local
competition. Finals are played across regions.
Glendinning Division (C Grade) -- 15-a-side
competition specifically designed for schools
entering the competition for the first time or
schools with a limited football background.
There are no finals.
Bill Walker Division -- Only for
schools who participate in the

Country Week.

Freo Dockers Cup
The Freo Dockers Cup aims
to provide a range of AFL
experiences to over 2000 female
upper school students from
country and metropolitan schools
who would not otherwise have

the opportunity to be involved in the sport.
Entering its 21st year, the competition is
co-ordinated by the West Australian Football
Commission and the Schoolgirls Advisory
Committee. Participation in the Freo Dockers
Cup has become an important step for girls
to become involved in community youth or
senior women’s competitions.
The competition is played during Term 2,
after school on Tuesdays over 2 x 20 minute
halves. There are four metropolitan regions
with games played across 2 metropolitan
divisions.
Alison Moore Division (A Grade) -- Strong
football schools seeking quality competition
with games played across regions.
Debbie White Division (B Grade) -- Where
the majority of schools compete. Teams are
split into regional pools to play against other
schools in their local area.
Cathy Vanderweide Division -- Only for
schools who participate at Senior High School
Country Week.

Boud breaks new ground
Sally Boud is proof that good things
happen to good people.
This weekend, Boud will make her AFL goal
umpiring debut when Fremantle clash with
GWS at Domain Stadium.
Since signing her AFL contract, there has
been a significant amount of interest in Boud’s
progression because she is the first female
from Western Australia to gain a position on
the AFL panel.
But while Boud’s gender is impossible to
ignore, so is her talent. A dual WAFL grand
final umpire, Boud has also officiated in a
Foxtel Cup grand final. In an era of strong
competition for positions in the WAFL goal
umpiring ranks, Boud stood out ahead of her
colleagues.
“She’s exceptional at her job,” WAFL
Umpiring Manager Darryl Sinclair said.
“Her ability to read the game so she is in
the best position to judge a score sets her
apart from the rest. Her speed and agility are
also significant strengths.
“We do a lot of testing and Sal has the
physical attributes to change direction at speed
to ensure she can also be in the best position
for any unpredictable kick. Those skills are rare
and that’s why she’s on the AFL list.”
Boud has always been a student of her
craft. While her focus has always been goal
umpiring, she recognised the importance of
understanding the skills required to be field or
boundary umpire. So, while goal umpiring in
the WAFL, she took time on days off to either
be a field or boundary umpire. The sight of her
arriving at Domain Stadium to field umpire a
little league game, just hours after completing
goal umpiring duties in the WAFL, showed
how committed she was to learning.
That commitment is one reason why Boud
developed quickly. But her leadership was
also paramount.
Voted into the WAFL umpiring leadership
team before she had made her league debut,
Boud’s contribution to the group has been
profound.
“There will be a lot of happy people when
she walks onto the ground this week,” Sinclair
said.
“Obviously Sal’s debut is a big win for
female umpiring. If you consider we’ve had
Kendell Ball and Lauren French also selected
to goal umpire WAFL grand finals, it is clear
that we have a great pathway for women.
“We now have females on the WAFL list
in field, boundary and goal. I’m certain that
Sally’s leadership has a lot to do with that.
“She has enormous respect from everyone
involved in umpiring in this State because she
has achieved success while also dedicating a
lot of time to improving other people.”
Boud will be the third West Australian to
debut in the AFL this season following in the
footsteps of boundary umpires Ryan Kukura
and Josh Garrett.

Can You Help?
Since the beginning of the 1970 WAFL season there have
been 4162 league debutants at an average of 93 new
players per season. The WAFL player database is missing a
date of birth for only 23 of these players but the birth place
and junior/previous club is not recorded for a further 240
players. Each week the Budget will list the playing records
of eight players for whom information is sought to improve
the database records. These include:
YouScan.me
Norbert FANDRY (Swan Districts 1967-1968, 7 games)
Perry HUNT (Perth 1968, 2 games)
Brian John KEYS (Perth 1966, 3 games)
Archibald William McDONALD (South Fremantle 1960-1966, 66
games)
Paul Scott McDONALD (Subiaco 1980, 13 games)
Joe PROCTER (West Perth and Perth 1991-1997, 17 games (WP), 37
games (P))
Jeffrey Warren SAMBELL (West Perth 1978, 1 game)
David Morris WALDOCK (Claremont 1968-1969, 4 games)
Any information that could help establish contact with, or lead to full
particulars being obtained on these players would be welcomed by
WAFL historian Greg Wardell-Johnson (via e mail gwardelljohnson@
wafc.com.au or message on 9381 5599) at the WA Football Commission.
