DUKE KAIIANAMOKU
ANNUAL REPORT
OCTOBER 1, 1993 - SEPTEMBER 30, 1994
FO U NDATION
President's
Message
CTIVE was a description of
the ODKF Boa rd of
Directors in 1993-94 . The
Board wa s active at laying the
groundwork for future athletic star
from Hawaii.
The Foundation was able to
honor Hawaii 's best not onl y in
ocean and water sports. but in other
athletic endeavors through the
continued kokua of our loyal donors
and new donors.
In 1994, we were able to see
our corpus grow to $578.000. The
Foundation recently rece ived its
largest-ever bequest-$25,000from former Hawaii resident and
Outrigger Canoe Club member.
Terrence McCarthy. in memory of
her late husband. Edmund.
Community donations resulted
in an ann ual outlay of $32.500 in
awards to athletes who are going to
col leges from Harvard in the East to
the University of Hawaii right here
at hom e, and everywhere in
between.
A
Fourteen athletes representing
si x water sport s-sw immin g,
sailing, kayak, water polo. ro.wing
and paddlin g-we re awarded
S12.000 i n scholarships for the
199-l school year.
Nin e ath letes earned grants
worth $4,200 in volleyball, surfing,
sailing and kayak. while six teams
and organizations shared S16.300 in
grants. The Foundation would like
to increase it s athleti c grant and
scholarship money from $32,500 to
$50.000 by 1996.
Another sport that benefitted
from a donation to ODKF from the
Wat umul l Foundation was the sport
of rowing. The Royal Hawai ian
Rowing Challenge Inc. is planning
it s first internati ona l rega tta
December 17 through 24 on the Ala
Wai Canal.
Crews
from
Oxford ,
Cambridge, Harvard, Yale. Russia
and Canada, which is the defending
Olympic champion, will compete in
bot h the eights and singles. The
Board of Directors is
proud to have helped
ope n doors 1n
Hawai i to revive a
spo rt that wa s
heavil y contested
here at the hi gh
school level through
the mid 1960's.
We have 111
common
the
obj ecti ve to help
men and women
from
Hawaii
emulat e
Duke
Kahan amoku- s
remarkable
accomplishments: accomplishments
now noted on bronze plaques at the
base of the Duke Statue on Kuhio
Beach in Waikiki.
Speaking
of
Duke
Ka hanamoku's accompli shments,
we remind you that the next
Olympics are less than two years
away. In 1992 the Foundation was
able to assist five dedicated athletes
from Hawai i who ultimately made it
to the Olympics to compete for the
United States.
Aspiring athletes from Hawaii
wil l once aga i n turn to the
Fou nda ti on as they trai n and
compete in the Olympic trials and
eliminations. We need to be ready
with support for tho se who wi ll
repre sent th e U.S . in At lanta.
Georgia in 1996. While that may
seem di stant, we ask that you plan
ah ead, as the ath letes do, and
consider putting ODKF at the top of
your donor list.
The future of the Foundation is
in good and capable hands. We
move into 1995 wi th the
establi shment of a suitabl e
volleyball memorial in memory of
Tom Haine.
Thank you for giving me the
opportunity to serve the ODKF.
Sincerely,
cb~t.-~~~

Not only does the Foundation receive mahalo letters from our grantees, we also
receive letters of praise from our friends.
"On behalf of the Outrigger Canoe Club. I wish to express deepest appreciation
to the ODKF, its directors and many generous contributors . . . the ODKF has been
able to make a real difference to many athletes and teams that in the past would have
been held back by the lack of fund s.. .
"Al though Hawaii has strongly supported traditional sports, it has been slow to
recognize the benefits of encouraging water oriented athletics. That was true in
Duke's Olympic era and it 's true today ... few local organizaJi ons have offered our
kids the opportunity to compete nationally and internationally. ..
"The Outrigger Canoe Club is proud to be associated with the Foundation and
supports your efforts to help young athletes reach their full potenti al as well as
encouraging the men and women of Hawaii to compete on a global level.'.

Tho1as Haine
n September, ODKF experienced one
of the greatest outpourings of aloha as
friend s and lo ved ones of the late
Thomas A. Haine made donations in his
memory to the Foundation.
Tom Haine died on September LO at
the age of 61. He was a member of the
original Outrigger Foundation Board and
contributed his knowledge and support to
th e merger in 1986 with the Duk e
Kahanamoku Foundation.
At the time of hi s death he was a
member of the Foundation's Ath letic
Grants Committee, and participated in the
grant making decisions of the Foundation
during 1993-94.
Long associated with ath letics at the
Outrigger Canoe Club, Tom Haine was
the personificat ion of vo lleyba ll in
Hawa ii. He played in every U.S.
Vo ll eyba ll Associatio n nat iona l
tournament from 1956 until hi s death.
The USVBA said "think Hawaii, thin k
volleyball, and you think of Tom Haine."
He was the fi rst Hawai i player inducted
into the Volleyball Hall of Fame.
The Foundation and the Haine family
want to have the funds given in the name
of Tom Haine used to create volleyball
scholarships and volleyball opportunities
for athletes in Hawaii. ODKF will keep
all of its friends informed of its efforts in
this direction.
Mahalo nui loa to those who gave to
the Foundation in his memory.
