2004-2005 ODKF Annual Report
President's Message
As I leave the Board after six years, I
marvel at the transformation that has
occurred w ith The O utrigger D uke
Ka hanamo ku Foundation. First and
foremost, of course, is the increased
amount of scholarships and grants that
the Foundation dispensed this year to
Hawai' i's young athletes. "Everybody
loves Duke" and the generosity of our
donors clearly proves that observation.
This year we reached a new high of
almost $80,000 dispensed in scho larships
and grants - nearly do uble the amount
from six years ago. The scholarships we
give truly change the lives of many
recipients. The sincere appreciation
our awardees express at our Mahalo
Luncheon makes the thousands of
volunteer hours that our Board members,
O utrigger C m oe Club members, and
friends of Duke spend for our causes,
all worth it!
just as important, however, in this
transformation of the Foundation is the
ever stronger focus on nourishing and
promoting the legacy of Duke to as wide
an audience as possible, through events
such as the annual August Ho'olaule'a in
Wa ikiki and the Duke's Sports and Fitness
Day. Four years ago, the Foundation
found new vigor in the first Ho' olaule' a
with the unveiling of the Duke postal
stamp and we are still riding that wave.
This year's Fourth Annual Duke
Ho'ol;lllle'a was a major community and
tourist event in Wa iki ki, w ith many
thanks to the event's organizer (and next
year's most capable ODKF President), jim
Fulto n. Through events such as this,
O DKF teaches Hawai' i, and indeed, the
world com munity, to appreciate Duke as
the embodiment of Aloha and athletic
achievement. This message of ODKF was
best expressed by Fred Hemmings in his

remarks about Duke in the August KGMB
special on D uke that premiered at the
August Ho'olaule'a: "Young people
should really learn about Duke and
realize that he's an example of w hat
really counts in life, the values that count
in life and the values that can't be measured in dollars and cents, or with trophies
or accolades, but the values that separate
1-lawai'i from other parts of the world,
the value of relationships, the value of
appreciation of nature, all the blessings
we have here in 1-/awai'i and the val ue of
who we are as people 10 each othe1:"
ODKF va lues its special relationship with
the Ou trigger Canoe Club and I am
pleased we were able to strengthen that
relationship this year, as evidenced by the
fundraising event at the Club where
specially painted canoe paddles '"'ere
auctio ned off at a great party, w ith the
proceeds going to the Foundation.
Another highlight of the year was the
Fundraising Auction at Hula Grill

Wa ikiki, through the generous assistance
of T.S. Restaurants w ho, as operators of
Duke's restaurants, remain our largest
contributor. Th is Auction was a great
party, and w ill be a regular event.
I am also pleased to note that the ODKF
board recently authorized honoring our
ret iri ng Board m ember, M r. W ilmer "Bill"
Morris, by naming him a LIFE BOARD
MEMBER. Bill is the first person to be
so honored.
W hen it comes to serving Duke, noth ing
less than one's best effort is acceptable.
Your Foundation, through its dedicated
board members and generous donors,
gave it that best effort thi s yea r and OKDF
has never been better.

The Boys and Girls Club
Duke Kahanamoku Sports and Fitness Day
The Boys and Girls Club Duke Kahanamoku Sports and Fitness Day
took place on April 2, 2005 at Lagoon #4 near the marina at Ko Olina.
About 235 kids from clubs all over the island, ranging in ages from 8 to
14, ilrTived at the lagoon by bus around 8:00 a.m. where staff and
volunteers handing out different colored surf jerseys greeted them.
They were divided into groups of 50 to 60 by jersey color and sent to
the HMSA stretching station to start the day. There were four activity
stations which consisted of volleyball with Dave Shoji and Wahine
volleyball players, a 6 man canoe clin ic run by many volunteers with
paddling backgrounds, a lifeguard station run by City & County
lifeguards (partici pating in many fun events and learning life saving
techniques) and surfing with HIC pros (with 20 surfboards in the water
at a time). Each group spent 50 minutes at each station then had a
10-minute break to rotate and start again. Thanks to the crew from
Duke's Restaurant who served up juicy hamburgers, jumbo hot dogs,
fruit, ch ips and juice. At 1:10 p.m. the event was finished and the kids
got back on the buses with a great time had by all! The sth Duke
Kahanamoku Sports and Fitness day is coming in April 2006.
Hawaii National Guard Youth Challenge Academy
Duke Kahanamoku Water Sports and Fitness Day
Among its good deeds, ODKF is helping at-risk teens with its support of the Hawaii National Guard Youth
Challenge Academy. It's a partnership that's now in its third year and is making a positive impact on underpriviledged youths who want to turn their lives around. ODKF has provided $8,000 in educational scholarships for
graduates, and also sponsors the annual Duke Kahanamoku Water Sports and Fitness Day at Ko Olina Lagoon for
program cadets. With support from other sponsors like Outrigger Canoe Club, Hui Nalu Canoe Club, Honolulu
City and County Lifeguards, and See ' n Sea Scuba, the Water Sports and Fitness Day uses a busy schedule of fun
outdoor activities to impress on these youths the values of personal responsibility, teamwork, fellowship and
leadership- all qualities that Duke exemplified.
The Hawaii N<1tional Guard Youth Academy is a magnificent
program that ODI<F is proud to support. It is a voluntary 18month residential program that is drug free and stresses •
discipline, academic preparation, leadership development,·
physical fitness and post-graduate placement in jobs,
continued education or military service. Now in its tenth year,
the Academy has graduated more than 1,600 cadets who have
earned their high school diplomas.

The Fourth Annual Duke's Ho' olaule'a
The Fourth Annual Duke's Ho'olaule'a was a five-day tribute (Aug. 24-28) to Duke Kahanamoku's legacy
and the beneficiaries of his greatness. Presented by the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation and
supported by numerous community-minded sponsors, it had something of fun and interest for everyone.
Highlights included Olympic Gold Medalist Aaron Peirsol swimming and surfing, Surf Polo at the Kapahulu
Groin, the Waterman Challenge, the Hawaiian Airlines Legends Surf Classic, a special Duke documentary
aired by KGMB, a Duke-themed Brunch on the Beach and a moving lei-draping ceremony of Duke's statue.
Most importantly, the Ho'olaule'a supported ODKF's mission to provide college scholarships and grants for
Hawai'i's outstanding young scholar-athletes. lmua ODKF!

The financial statements for
the ODK~ as of and for the year
ended September 30, 2004, were
reviewed by PricewaterhouseCoopers. These financial
statements are available to our

A report has been developed
on the foundation's un-reviewed
financial results for the fiscal year

These financial statements are
now being reviewed. When that
review is completed, they will be
available to members by request.

make cash contributions.

Enterprises (Duke's Restaurant) and
Malama Pono.
If you would like additional
financial information please
contact any member of the Board
of Directors.
