Because of Nyack College’s close proximity to New York City, Honors Program members explore numerous cultural opportunities, including world-class museums, dramatic productions, and NYC’s diverse communities. The Honors Program integrates its signature Humanities Core Curriculum, seminars, national and international travel, and senior capstone project with a member’s core and major requirements. ANNUAL OPPORTUNITIES • Fall Retreat—Each fall, current honors students welcome incoming honors freshmen by introducing the year’s theme, and presenting unique opportunities for students to engage, in research, current events, and community service for the duration of their time at Nyack College. (Previous annual themes: Water Resource Management, Understanding Genocide, US Policies and Practices Regarding Immigration, and The Role and Impact of Technology and Social Media.) • National Collegiate Honors Conference (NCHC)—Select student delegates, whose projects have been accepted for presentation, attend the NCHC to present their work. (Past presented student projects: “Microfinance: Providing People a Gateway to Economic Development,” “Gendercide: China’s Growing Problem,” and “Use, Reuse, and Abuse: An Exposé on Water Bottling Companies and the Down-Cycling Process As It Affects Our World”) During their time at Nyack College and following graduation, Honors students have interned and staffed at the following organizations/companies: To further extend their Nyack College experience, some Honors students have also participated in semester-long study abroad in Egypt, Israel, Costa Rica, and England, among others. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS We invite students to apply who have at least a 3.5 (un-weighted) GPA and a score of 1060 on the SAT (or a score of 20 on the ACT). The Seminar consists of lectures and selected reading materials based on the annual theme. Freshmen use this weekly Seminar to integrate current events with academic research in order to create a project to submit to the NCHC. • Spring City Escape—Early in the spring semester, the Honors Program travels to an eastern seaboard city to learn about the location’s history, architecture, art, and religious influence. (Recent trips: Boston, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, and Baltimore) At Nyack College freshmen and sophomore honors students also enroll in the integrated Humanities Core for their first four semesters. Each semester covers a period of World history (Ancient, Medieval, Modern, and Contemporary), while focusing on the philosophy, history, and literature of the respective time periods. The study of ideas, questions, and expressions of these periods is designed to provide students with a comprehensive and interdisciplinary liberal arts education essential to producing outstanding Christian leaders for the 21st century. • Broadway Show—One of the annual highlights for many Honors students is joining together before the conclusion of the Spring semester to see a Broadway Musical in NYC. (Recent shows: Godspell, Phantom of the Opera, and Les Misérables) In addition to the Humanities Core, Honors students take Honors College Writing, Honors Research, and Honors Bible courses. Depending on the students’ major, Math and Science requirements may be waived for those students who received a 3.5 or higher in those classes during high school. Junior and senior honors students, as a part of the Honors Program, may travel in conjunction with Nyack’s Global Service Learning to destinations such as Morocco, Spain, Turkey, Egypt, and Italy. These trips enable students to investigate the history and culture of the region and provide unique first-hand immersion that broadens students’ worldview. The Honors Curriculum concludes with the Senior Project in which seniors, working with a faculty mentor, plan, research, and present an informed creative project that combines their disciplinary interests and reflections on their growth and understanding throughout their college experience. For many students, these projects provide a foundation for future discovery and inquiry. Within the Honors Program, I appreciated the potential to “explore both my current interests as well as being stretched to look into other areas of study previously unknown to me. Interacting with other Honors Students provided me with a better framework for which to approach my own given subject and encouraged me to continue to pursue learning beyond my time at Nyack College.
