Dumplings
- are one of the mainstays of Czech cuisine and are typically served with
meals (can be either wheat or potato based, and are sometimes made
from a combination of wheat flour and stale bread or rolls)
- Czech potato dumplings are often filled with smoked meat, spinach or
sour cabbage
Noodles
Rice - served simply boiled or made as Risotto or sometimes as a cake
with fruit.
Potatoes - easy and fast to grow in the Czech climate, baked or boiled
and mixed into mashed potatoes
Pasta - is common, either baked, cooked with other ingredients or
served as a salad. Pasta is available in different shapes and flavours

There are typical Czech meals during a day:
Breakfast
Consists of:
- pastries - bread (is very often, baked from rye or rye and
wheat, flavoured with salt, cumin or onion), roll, bun called
(žemle), braided bun (houska) or toast
- cereals, pancakes, cornflakes, porridge
- fruit and/or vegetables
- butter, salami, sausages, cheese, eggs
- beverages - tea, coffee, cocoa, milk
or fruit juice

Snack (elevenses)
- a snack is a portion of food often smaller than a regular meal,
generally eaten between meals
- can be healthy or unhealthy (low/high-calorie snacks)
- fruit, vegetables, nuts and cereal grains
- chocolate, peanuts, potato chips, candy bars, bar of
chocolate, hot dogs, hamburgers, popcorn – junk food
- roll or bread with butter, cheese, salami or marmelade

Lunch
- a traditional Czech lunch is a two or three-course meal
- the main meal (hot) of the day
- additional courses - soup and dessert or salad
- consisting of protein (meat), starchy foods (potatoes) and
vegetables or salad

Soup: plays an important role in Czech cuisine
(beef, chicken or vegetable broth with noodles)

Meat dishes:
Pork, beef, calf and chicken
Roast pork with dumplings and Sauerkraut is considered the
most typical Czech dish
Marinated sirloin with dumplings is popular as well
Mincemeat is a dish made from minced pork meat (typical
with mashed potatoes)
Slices of calf, pork or chicken meat covered with Czech
traditional triplecoat
Wild game - mutton, lamb, deer
Bird meat – goose, duck, turkey and hen

A snack eaten shortly before going to bed or during the night may
be called a midnight snack – crisps, chips, nuts, beer cheese…

* beer – has a long history
* wine - especially in Moravia
* slivovitz – typical product of Wallachia
* Czech famous liquors: Fernet Stock and Becherovka
* soft drink: Kofola - is a non-alcoholic drink, similar in
look and taste to Coca-Cola but not as sweet
* a mixed drink consisting of Becherovka and tonic water is
called „Beton“ and Fernet Stock mixed with tonic, called
„Bavorák“
