NC Legislative Report, November 2012

North Carolina Election Results Bode Well For Construction
While the outcome of the national races could have been more positive for construction, North
Carolina voters on Tuesday elected for the first time since the 1800’s, Republicans to take control
of the state government.
Republican Pat McCrory was elected as the incoming governor is a staunch supporter of
infrastructure funding and business.
After the NC General Assembly convenes it’s long session on January 30, 2013, Republicans will
maintain control of the State House and Senate, avoiding prolonged battles with the governor on
veto issues that plagued them under Perdue’s watch.
Architect Dan Forest was elected as the incoming Lieutenant Governor.
Pro-business Labor Commissioner Cherry Berry and NC School Superintendent June Atkinson
were both reelected.
Wake County voters approved $200 million in bonds to expand Wake Technical Community
College, adding buildings to the Northern Wake campus and starting construction on a new
Research Triangle branch. Orange County voters approved a half cent sales tax Tuesday to help
pay the local share of a $1.4 billion plan for light rail expansion and better bus service.
What Construction Can Expect: McCrory, former longtime former mayor of Charlotte, on the
campaign trail repeated themes of growing jobs, spending more on infrastructure, cutting
government red tape, continuing regulatory reform, modernizing the tax structure and bolstering
vocational education. One of his ideas includes grading the performance of state government
employees by customer satisfaction. Look for McCrory, who developed an outstanding
infrastructure growth program in Charlotte to prod the GOP led legislature on infrastructure fronts.
