Awards Recipient Report, these awards
support our best and brightest students in
pursuing their passions inside and outside
the classroom. Their interests include history,
social justice, political science, athletics,
medicine, international health and more.
Awards also enable all of our exceptionally
qualified students to access a postsecondary education regardless of financial
circumstances.

STUDENT AWARD RECIPIENTS
A
gnieszka Herra hopes to make an educational
impact on future students as a university professor.
The James P. and Margaret A. Carr Ontario Graduate
Scholarship has not only made studying at the graduate
level possible for Agnieszka, it has also given her the
opportunity to pursue her dreams in academia.
“I have met Mrs. Carr and was touched by her generosity,”
says Agnieszka who grew up in Kingston, Ontario. “I am very
thankful. Her award has been such a source of financial
support for me this year.”
A PhD student in the Comparative Literature Program,
Agnieszka is in the process of working on her dissertation
about civil resistance movements and their impact on prose
fiction writers. In the current political climate of “people
power” movements in the Middle East and Northern Africa,
she is excited that her research will trace a tradition of how
peaceful protest comes about and how it inspires writers.
“The Polish Solidarity Movement is one of the resistance
movements I am writing about and the Ontario Graduate
Scholarship allowed me to visit Poland last summer and
conduct research in various university libraries in the
country,” notes Agnieszka who was born in Gydia, Poland,
and later moved to Canada with her family when she was
six years old. “This trip was very special to me because it
also allowed me to see my family, which I am not able to
do very often.”

SCHOLARSHIP

PhD’12, COMPARATIVE LITERATURE
In April, Agnieszka attended the American Comparative
Literature Association Annual Conference in Vancouver,
British Columbia. There she presented a paper that comes
from her dissertation research on one of her favourite Polish
writers, Janusz Anderman.
Agnieszka says that neither of these trips would have been
possible without her scholarship.
The James P. and Margaret A. Carr Ontario Graduate
Scholarship is awarded to a full-time graduate student in the
Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the Master’s or Doctoral
level, based on academic achievement and research merit.
The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) funding ensures a
2:1 match through the Provincial Government, increasing
the value of the scholarships from $5,000 to $15,000 each.
“I hope to get a faculty position at an academic institution,”
says Agnieszka. “In my first day as an undergraduate, I
instantly knew that I loved the atmosphere of the university
campus. This love became even more apparent with my
exposure to intellectual discussion and the inspirational
guidance of university professors.”
Agnieszka expects to graduate in the fall of 2012 with a PhD
in Comparative Literature.

L
ydia Cheung is the first senior medical student at
Western to complete an overseas elective in Huai’an,
China. As the most recent recipient of the $1,750
award in honour of Dr. Rob Tingley, Lydia’s journey has
been invaluable for Western’s newly developed long-term
bilateral partnership with hospitals in Huai’an. For Lydia, the
purpose of her journey was two-fold: for her own clinical
education and cross-cultural exchange with the Chinese
health care system and traditional Chinese medicine; and
second, to open doors for future senior elective students.
“This generous award has helped me alleviate the financial
burden of funding an overseas elective,” says Lydia who was
born in Hong Kong but has lived in the Toronto area since
she was three years old. “The cumulative costs involved
to travel, particularly to developing countries, are a
considerable barrier to pursuing learning opportunities
that are invaluable in enhancing our cultural competence
and worldview.”
The Dr. Rob Tingley’s Class of ’95 Developing Countries
Award is presented to a student in Year 4 of the Doctor of
Medicine (MD) program to assist with travel or program
expenses directly related to an overseas experience through
the Medical Elective Overseas Program. The recipient
commits to a six to eight week experience and is selected
by a committee. Friends and family of Dr. Rob Tingley of the
Medical Class of 1995 established this award to honor the
life-altering experience Dr. Tingley had in Kijabe, Kenya by
enabling future students to have similar experiences.
Lydia is thankful for Western’s Global Health Department’s
interest and commitment to support overseas initiatives.
“For students like me who choose to go on overseas
electives, it comforts us to know that the school is
committed to helping shape our international electives into
more sustainable partnerships that can enrich education for
Western students and our hospitable hosts overseas.”
After finishing her undergraduate degree at McMaster, she
moved to London to obtain her medical degree from
Western. Upon graduation last May, Lydia completed her
residency training in Family Medicine at the University of
Toronto’s Markham-Stouffville site. With a unique emphasis
on global health, Lydia participates in monthly global health
rounds and works closely with the growing immigrant
population in Markham. She is also preparing for an
international elective while taking courses to complete a
certificate of global health.
Lydia notes that donor support has played an integral role
in her journey to learning more about global and
international health.
“I am encouraged by the conviction of Dr. Rob Tingley that
overseas electives provide an added and invaluable niche of
learning during our medical training.”

CHAMPIONS SCHOLARSHIP

J
D Hartnagle believes that actions speak louder than
words. Although he had the opportunity to thank
donors in person, he feels that the best way to show his
appreciation is by succeeding in his studies and working
towards his future goals.
JD is the inaugural recipient of the $1,000 First National
Champions Scholarship. For the last three years he has
been involved in intramural basketball and baseball as well
as playing tight end/slot back for the Western Mustangs
Football Team. JD has not only excelled in his athletic
accomplishments but has also maintained a high academic
standing while participating in his faculty’s cooperative
education program.
“Studying at Western has given me access to a combination
of great academics and athletics,” says JD, who plans on
graduating in 2013 with a degree in Mechanical
Engineering. “I’m currently enrolled in a 16-month
internship at Schaeffler Canada in Stratford where I am a
Process Engineer in the Wheel Bearing division. This will
give me insight about what I want to do in the future as it is
essentially the same work I will be doing when I graduate.”
With tuition costs and living expenses on the rise, JD
believes that student awards help alleviate some of the
financial pressures that may hinder some students from
pursuing their career ambitions. “The scholarship I received
has allowed me to pay for all kinds of things from textbooks
to living expenses, which otherwise would have to be paid
for with help from parents or loans,” notes JD, whose family
is from Acton, Ontario.
The First National Champions Scholarship was established
through Foundation Western, by alumni from the 1959
Western Mustangs Football Team. It is awarded to a fulltime undergraduate or graduate student in any year of any
degree program at Western, including the affiliated
university colleges, who is making a significant contribution
as a member of the Mustangs Football Team. The recipient
is selected based on academic and athletic performance
and potential, as well as team and campus leadership.
JD is proud to be part of the Western community that
generously support one another and willingly offer
assistance to those in need.
“The name speaks for itself. A Western degree connects me
with a strong network of alumni who will no doubt help my
career in the future.”

MARTA KOPUN

M
arta Kopun is a true believer in giving back to the
community, both locally and internationally, which
is why she feels so honoured to have received one
of the $1,100 awards funded by the late William M. Edgar.
help of another student, Marta started a small probiotic
yogurt business to be run by women throughout the local
community that will build people’s immune systems and
help HIV and AIDS victims digest their medication.
Marta truly appreciates Mr. Edgar’s kindness and admires
his selflessness. “His generosity has not only helped me and
many students before me, but will continue to help many
students in the future,” notes Marta. “It is incredible that his
legacy will continue to touch the lives of others. As a
student requiring financial support, his generosity has
gone a long way and has made the cost of university more
bearable for me.”
Fortunately for Marta, she has been able to continue her
passion for social justice in her studies at Western. She says
she feels lucky to be part of a program that combines
history and political science, which allows for some
flexibility in course specialization.
Established through Foundation Western, the Department
of History Award is presented to a student in an Honors
Bachelor degree, with either an Honors Specialization,
Major or Specialization in History based on academic
achievement and financial need. William M. Edgar
established this award to recognize the outstanding
teaching provided to him by Professor Craig Simpson.
Marta is an advocate of social justice issues and a volunteer
in both the London community and abroad. In her first year
at Western, she volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and
travelled to New Orleans to help build houses for victims of
Hurricane Katrina. The experience was so rewarding that
she decided to volunteer with Western Heads East and
travelled to Africa for four months. In Tanzania, with the

courses in International Relations ignited Marta’s interest in
international law, and she recently wrote her LSATs in hopes
of entering law school after graduation.
“I cannot thank Mr. Edgar enough for helping me and so
many other students pursue our goals and further our
education,” says Marta. “He must have been an incredible
man and I know he is missed by many.”

help many students in the future.”

aron Lillie has endured the physical and emotional
distress of a spinal cord injury, but thanks to
compassionate donors such as Richard Konrad, he
has been able to return to school with some financial relief.
After his first year at Western, Aaron suffered a devastating
spinal cord injury from a diving accident and sustained
paralysis from the shoulders down. Adjusting to life in a
wheelchair, combined with regular physiotherapy sessions
has been stressful enough without the significant increase
in cost of living.
“It has become more difficult to find summer
employment and pay for school,” says Aaron who grew
up in Bracebridge, Ontario. “The bursary has eased
the financial burden my disability has put on my family
and me.”
He praises student scholarship donations and the
significant impact donors have on their recipients.

“These generous people ensure that everyone has access
to a post-secondary education. Finances should never stop
someone with a desire to learn and student scholarship
donations allow your possibilities to be unlimited. It is
often hard to find the words to thank someone who has
helped you in an altruistic manner, but their contributions
provide so much to the recipients. They are individuals that
all communities aspire to have and Western is fortunate
enough to have their support.”
The Reinhard Konrad Memorial Bursary is awarded
annually to two students who meet the eligibility
requirements for financial need. Preference for one of the
bursaries is given to a student with an identified disability
such as a hearing impairment, visual impairment, learning
disability or physical disability. Valued at $1,000 each, these
bursaries were established by Richard Konrad in memory
of his father, Reinhard Konrad, through Foundation
Western.
Aaron is thankful that he has been offered the financial
support needed to continue his studies at Western.
“I couldn’t ask to be anywhere else,” he says. “Western is a
great environment for a learning mind. The school has
great recognition as one of Canada’s premier universities.”
Although the last few years have been a challenge for
Aaron, he looks forward to his life after graduation.
“I am still discovering my passions, but I have a significant
interest in starting an exercise-based recovery program for
others who have suffered spinal cord injuries in Southern
Ontario. I also plan to pursue a career as a certified financial
advisor and would like to begin investing in real estate.”

T
yler Marve grew up in a lower income, single-parent
family. While many would be discouraged by increasing
tuition costs and living expenses,Tyler never gave up
hope. He sought support through Western’s student awards
program, receiving the Gracey Family Continuing Scholarship.
Born in Flint, Michigan, Tyler and his family moved to Canada
and settled in the town of Tillsonburg, Ontario where he
attended both primary and secondary school.Tyler feels
privileged to have the opportunity to come toWestern.
“If it were not for loans, grants and other forms of financial
assistance like the scholarship from the Gracey family, my
education would have ended after high school,” saysTyler. “I am
forever thankful to them for lightening my student debt.”
He says that their generosity has helped him overcome some of
the monetary hurdles preventing many students from realizing
their dreams. Tyler had the opportunity to meet the Gracey
family and thanked them in person.
“It was nice to thank the people from whom the award came
and explain the excitement and relief that overcame me upon
receiving my grant. Hopefully by showing my appreciation and
telling the Gracey family about the good resulting from their
generosity, I have inspired them to continue to help other
students as much as they helped me.”
The Gracey Family Continuing Scholarship is awarded to an
undergraduate student entering second year of Honors Political
Science in the Faculty of Social Science who achieves a
minimum of 85% academic average.The scholarship continues
for two more years, provided the recipient remains in an Honors
Political Science program and maintains an 80% average and
full-time course load. The $1,000 scholarship is made possible
by a generous gift from Don Gracey and Nancy Coldham, who
also established the Cecil G. Gracey Memorial Continuing
Scholarship through Foundation Western.
“I believe that awareness of how political systems and institutions
work and respect for them have deteriorated markedly.At the
same time, as recent events have demonstrated, their reform is
overdue,” notes Don Gracey. “Nancy and I wanted to help
students who are interested in such things to expand their
knowledge – and, hopefully, some day be able to apply it.”
Tyler is thankful for the support he’s received and feels coming
to Western was one of the best decisions of his life.
“In addition to the knowledge gained from three years of study,
I’ve made lasting friendships in and outside of the classroom
that will extend far beyond my time at this institution.”
After graduating with a BA in Political Science, Tyler plans to
pursue a law degree. Tyler has been set on studying law ever
since he participated in his high school co-op program at a local
law firm in Tillsonburg. He plans to practise criminal law as a
defence attorney representing clients who are struggling
financially.

SCHOLARSHIPS IN SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY*
The Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS) program and the Ontario
Graduate Scholarships in Science & Technology (OGSST) program recognize
and support exceptionally talented students in graduate studies. Under
these programs, every $5,000 in private funding leverages an additional
$10,000 in matching funds from the Province of Ontario to fully support one
$15,000 award.
Recipients must be “A” students who have passed a province-wide
competitive review process based on their marks, references, research

OGS/ST awards are highly sought after and Western continues to have
one of the highest allocation rates for these prestigious scholarships in the

DEFINITIONS OF SCHOLARSHIPS, AWARDS AND BURSARIES
The term “awards” is often used to refer to a grouping of scholarships, awards and bursaries.
University Policy 2.10 defines the use of these titles as follows:
AWARD: A monetary payment given on the basis of a combination of academic and non-academic criteria.
Normally, a minimum “B” (70%) average is required for undergraduate students and a minimum 78% average is
required for graduate students.
BURSARY: A monetary award/payment based primarily on demonstrated financial need.
SCHOLARSHIP: A monetary award having a fixed minimum value, based on general academic excellence
(normally a minimum “A” (80%) average), or on excellence in a specific subject or group of subjects, and in some
cases also on non-academic criteria. At the graduate level the minimum average for these scholarships is 78%.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND QUESTIONS
Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the Student Awards Recipient Report, which
lists all awards given out during the 2010/2011 academic year (September 2010 to mid-June 2011). Not all established
awards are given out every year, based on the availability of qualified recipients who meet the terms of the award or
other circumstances. Similarly, awards intended for multiple recipients may also not be given out in full number.
For the purposes of this publication, students have the option to maintain their privacy by requesting anonymity.
Such requests have been honoured through the listing of “anonymous recipients.”

GLOBAL OPPORTUNITIES AWARDS
Our goal is to establish a permanent series of Global Opportunities (GO) Awards to offer increasing numbers
of Western students the chance to attend university outside Canada; participate in exchange programs; build
communities around the world; and learn new languages and perspectives. In recognition of the importance of
international programs for our students and their futures, the University is offering matching funds to our
alumni and friends who choose to support the GO Awards at Western.
