GDY LU LEGENDARY LUND Story by Nick Weldon | Photos by Scott Pederson Build-a-Lund Lund’s cutting-edge new “Boat Builder” web application empowers customers to seamlessly assemble their dream boat, down to the finest details IF YOU’VE EVER SAT ON YOUR COUCH fantasizing about your perfect Lund boat—a 20-foot, big-water deep-V with bold red paint, lots of horsepower, a stereo and canvas top— Lund’s innovative new “Boat Builder” web application will help you make that dream a reality. Designed by the digital whizzes at the Minneapolis-based studio Pixel Farm, Lund’s Boat Builder application allows customers to totally customize a Lund boat to suit their on-water needs. The slick web interface is straightforward, easy-to-use and—yes, trust us—a lot of fun to play around with. “Lund’s lineup is as extensive as each individual model is versatile,” says Jason Oakes, Lund’s marketing director. “In other words, we provide boaters a great deal of choice and customization in selecting the right boat. The Boat Builder application streamlines the boat-buying process for customers so that what may normally be a daunting task is simple, informative and engaging.” Boat Builder presents customers with a straightforward four-step interface: 1) Choose your preferred boating application (categories include “Camp & Resort Boats” and “MultiSpecies Fishing”), 2) select a model listed within that category, 3) customize your boat’s every detail, and 4) view your package summary, including total cost and any applicable discounts. The application allows you to then share your boat creation via Facebook, Twitter and email or, most useful of all, send your custom Lund to a nearby dealer. “Boat Builder allows you to have a few different scenarios planned out before you visit the dealer,” says Matt Weier, Pixel Farm’s technical director. “We wanted users to have a takeaway at the end—generating an image on the fly that has their boat and the right color combination and a table of all their equipment choices—that can be exported to PDF or sent in an email.” After first whittling down choices based on preferred boating usage and then viewing all models that fit that boating style, customers can start experimenting. At step 3, they can see a digital representation of their model of choice sitting at a dock (and can view a 8 | LUND detailed overhead photo with a single click), with a suite of customization options below. Pick a freeboard color and watch your digital Lund change shades like a chameleon. Select from available Mercury outboard motors, and choose from a laundry list of available equipment to deck out your perfect boat. Opt for a washdown station, add a port console, install extra seats and trick out your Lund to have the works—or just choose the minimum equipment you need for a good time on the water. When finished personalizing a model, you can view an itemized summary of your custom Lund package. Step 4 allows you to save your boat for future viewing, and print, share or download the summary. Matt and the Pixel Farm team have already begun work on exciting future elements for the Lund Boat Builder web app, including a tool that will allow you to roll your cursor across an overhead image of a model to highlight key features, such as livewells and baitwells. The core purpose remains to present customers with an incredibly easy way to find exactly the boat that they want. “With a couple of clicks you can see what boat is right for you,” Matt says. “We want you to discover what’s at the heart of your fishing experience.” To check out Lund’s impressive Boat Builder app, visit www.lundboats.com/boats/boat-builder. www.lundboats.com Beneath it All No amount of bells and whistles can cover for a boat with an unreliable hull. Safety, stability, boat control and overall comfort all rely on what lies below the waterline. Fortunately, almost all Lund boats feature IPS™ or IPS™ 2 hulls—the most dependable aluminum hull systems in the industry. The IPS/IPS 2 advantages are unmistakable: More stable. Lunds boast some of the widest chine widths in the industry, providing unmatched stability while running or at rest. Rock-solid reliability. I-beams are fastened directly to the transom for peerless strength and durability. Tying longitudinal and transverse beams together also gives Lund hulls maximum lift, reducing drag and enhancing wide-open throttle speeds. Boating’s Best Lifetime Warranty. Double-riveted seams are stronger than welds, which are prone to cracking over time. This allows Lund to offer the best warranty in the business. Precise maneuvering. A deep, pronounced keel works with wide reverse chines, which act as trim tabs, to create superior grip while tracking and turning at high speeds. Quicker holeshots. Reverse chines and a wider footprint allow the hull to channel water away, creating a drier, smoother ride and better overall performance. COMPETITOR FOOTPRINT LUND IPS™ FOOTPRINT To read more about Lund’s IPS and IPS 2 hulls, turn to page 3 of the catalog section or visit www.lundboats.com. ———— READY ———— FOR ———— ACTION ———— ———— STORY BY JENNIFER CHESAK PHOTOS BY MIKE CALABRO ———— ————— C Chilly late spring rains have just doused the already full Kamloops Lake when I meet up with the Hankses, owners of a Lund 2150 Baron, at the Tobiano boat ramp. Situated at the confluence of the North Thompson and South Thompson River branches in British Columbia, Kamloops Lake features a westward current and sheds its waters into the main branch of the Thompson. The current, in addition to the lake’s high-bluffed shoreline—carved into multi-colored lava—turn the water into a cauldron of roiling whitecaps on windy days. Four kids, Megan (14), Geoffrey (12), Matthew (9) and Graeme (7), pile out of a GMC Sierra 2500HD Denali Crew Cab, bundled accordingly for a sure-to-be-breezy cruise on the water. “Do you want to reschedule?” I ask parents Dave and Hilary. “We’ll go out in anything,” Dave replies with a grin. His confidence clearly stems from Lund ownership. The 2150 Baron is new to them this season after they decided to upgrade from a 17footer. “The old one is 20 years old and still water-tight,” Dave says after loading us up at the dock. The Hankses also once owned a 12-footer that Dave hauled on top of the family car. “Lund boats are bulletproof,” he adds. The kids and their father cast into the schools of bait, each hoping to be the first one to hook up with something big. Scrawny limbs stretch everywhere across the cockpit, but the 2150 feels plenty roomy and offers a comfy bow. For the ride to a favorite fishing hole, I plop myself up front with Hilary. “The kids ski,” she says, filling me in on family activities. “They love fishing, and there are so many lakes just a short drive from Kamloops.” Thankfully, as we converse, we don’t have to yell over the practically inaudible 300-hp Mercury FourStroke Verado®. Talking over the kids, however, is another story. Indeed, we’ve barely set off eastward toward the head of the lake when Megan and Graeme already begin talking excitedly about what they’ll catch. Known for its salmon, lake trout and rainbow trout, Kamloops Lake rarely disappoints an eager angler. We enjoy the 20-minute ride along the narrow lake’s northern shoreline, watching for wildlife that might be perched in a stand of Ponderosa pine or Douglas fir or even out in the open amidst the fragrant sagebrush. Kamloops Lake rests in the dry interior of British Columbia in what is more specifically known as Thompson Country. The relatively large city of Kamloops sits at the head of the lake, while the smaller community of Savona marks its western terminus. The shoreline between the two towns remains mostly uninhabited. The newly built Tobiano community, where we begin our adventure, consists of a golf course, clubhouse, condos and the boat ramp, and lies at the halfway point on the lake’s southern shore. The development sits atop a former cattle ranch and provides an important access point to the lake. “It’s fish city,” Graeme says, when Dave eases off the throttle and adjusts the kicker motor for trolling. He grabs the rod Megan has prepared for him, and simultaneously points to the tiny — —— 12 | LUND www.lundboats.com — The winds pick up, making our whitecapped course across the lake begin to look a little ominous, but the Baron’s smooth ride gets us there safely. — — baitfish jumping on the water’s surface, a clear sign there’s something larger riling them up. “Are you gonna catch me a Kamloops trout?” I ask him. The famous fish first gained notoriety in the early 1900s when anglers seemed to be catching a bigger and feistier trout on the province’s interior lakes than anywhere else. The Kamloops trout is not actually its own species, but is said to be a variation of trout that thrives on eating insects, and flourishes in lakes where it can readily feed. Dave laughs at my comment, knowing how Kamloops trout tales can gain momentum as they spread. The kids and their father cast into the schools of bait, each hoping to be the first one to hook up with something big. Hilary covers her legs with a blanket and sits back to observe her kids in action. The Hankses bought their Baron from Kamloops-based Domenic’s Marine, owned by Domenic Lucia. “Domenic is a great businessman,” Dave says. “He provides very good service. “He and his son, Frank, are very reliable and trustworthy.” Not long into our casting frenzy, we realize the windy weather and choppy water might be putting a damper on the fishing. No worries, though; soon a thundering sound steals our attention. A long train chugs slowly over the south shore cliffs, and the kids want a closer look. They 14 | LUND reel in and stow their rods while Dave settles into the helm. “It’s phenomenal,” he says, when he sees me eyeing the gauges. “It has digital throttle and power steering and it feels like I’m driving a Ferrari.” We rocket over the waves to the opposite shore, where a red-bricked bridge spans a tiny cove. Dave slips the Lund under the bridge so the kids can hear the train clanking and feel its rumble in their chests. He marvels at how easy it is to entertain his family with the Lund. “We fish for a while and then go build a fire in a cove and let the kids swim,” he says of their usual on-water routine. Because the South Thompson River drains from the warm Shuswap and Little Shuswap lakes, Lake Kamloops is warmer than most area waterways and can be a good place to indulge in watersports like skiing and tubing. Today, though, as Graeme says, “It’s log city!” The spring watershed and recent rainfall have sent a smattering of debris downstream, making watersports treacherous; plus the weather is a little less than ideal. Not long after the excitement of the passing train fades, the rain returns. Daylight wanes a bit, too, signaling us to head back to the launch. The wind picks up, making our white-capped course across the lake begin to look a little ominous, but the Baron’s smooth ride gets us there safely. At the dock, the clouds part, and we’re treated to a sunset worthy of being immortalized on a canvas. Dave climbs into the Sierra HD and backs his trailer down the ramp. Its rearview camera system aids the quick process, and before anyone can offer to help, he’s back at the dock, climbing into the Lund. Dave pulls the 2150 Baron up the slick ramp incline with ease, utilizing the Sierra HD’s Hill Start Assist. “I love that feature,” Dave says with a grin. Hill Start Assist senses potential “roll-back” and holds full brake pressure until you lift your foot from the pedal. This allows 1.5 extra seconds to apply power and drive off. When Dave and Hilary have loaded up the kids, I ask him about trailering to other areas. “Oh yeah,” he says. “I plan on taking the Lund salmon fishing on the coast.” I wince at the www.lundboats.com thought of towing a boat on a wicked road like Highway 99, nicknamed the “Sea to Sky,” which stretches west from Lillooet. Dave just shrugs. Whether traveling the British Columbia interior’s plateaus or snaking up and down a mountain pass beyond, the Sierra HD’s fully boxed high-strength steel frame resists any bending, twisting or shaking, and the GMC’s electronic trailer-sway control keeps vehicle, trailer and Lund heading in the proper direction. Apparently, there’s just one major problem: There are too many places that boast good boating and fishing in British Columbia. Dave, a general surgeon, and Hilary, a family doctor, have that dilemma settled, too. “I can go from the operating room to the lake in less than an hour,” Dave says, gesturing back to the water. Enough said. www.lundboats.com wg Ma Ey These features on the GMC Sierra HD make towing a Lund effortless. Tow/Haul Mode: Raises transmission up-shift points, providing more power to accelerate. It also raises downshift points, helping you use engine compression to slow with less noise and harshness. Eaton™ Automatic Locking Rear Differential: On slippery roads, this feature automatically saves wheel spin, locks the rear axle and transfers torque to the wheel with most traction. If it senses different speeds between left and right wheels, it locks to turn both wheels in unison for added traction. Automatic Grade Braking: This technology detects when the truck is heading downhill and, if necessary, downshifts to maintain a desired speed. LUND | 15 A LUND PRO STAFFER AND HIS 2000 ALASKAN PROVIDE “DOWNTIME” FOR MINISTERS AND THEIR FAMILIES FrM Msn STORY AND PHOTOS BY DAVE MULL As a Lund Pro Staffer and avid fisherman, Mike Eberstein spends a great deal of time on his 2000 Alaskan. But as the owner of a barbershop for more than 30 years, he inevitably has spent more of his days chopping locks than hooking fish. That’s not to say he hasn’t done his best to bring his love of the water back on dry land. Muskie, giant walleye, brown trout and smallmouth bass line the walls of his bright red barbershop in Schoolcraft, Michigan. Mike also works in conjunction with Matteson Marine, the local Lund dealer located in Gun Lake, Michigan, helping to sell versatile watercraft like his own cherished Alaskan. The location of his barbershop on Schoolcraft’s main drag certainly helps. T The thoroughfare is U.S. 131, a busy northsouth traffic artery between the Indiana state line, through the little town of Schoolcraft and on up to Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids, Michigan. ———— Traffic lights through the town slow motorists down, affording drivers a good gander at Mike’s Lund—with its big Matteson Marine sticker— parked right in front of the barbershop. “Mike sells a lot of Lunds for us,” says Win Matteson, owner of Matteson Marine. “He has the best location possible, and it’s amazing how many people call who have just seen our name on his boat, or who stopped in to talk to Mike and got our card from him.” One fellow Mike has never met before comes inside the barbershop on this late summer day and inquires about the 20-foot Lund Alaskan parked out front. The man says he’s seen the boat several times driving between his home in Grand Rapids and Indiana. Mike goes over how the boat is rigged with a 115-hp Mercury FourStroke outboard and the Minn Kota iPilot trolling motor on the bow. To the casual observer, it’s a soft sell, as Mike covers the features that make the boat so perfect for the wide variety of fishing adventures available for someone living in Michigan. The man isn’t quite ready to buy, but Mike gives him a business card for Matteson Marine, making sure the man knows he can see other boats in the Lund lineup there on his way home to Grand Rapids. Mike occasionally even goes so far as to take curious customers out on the water in his Alaskan, just to get them hooked on what he considers the best fishing boat brand out there. “If I ever call Mike and tell him I got a fellow here who wants to see what fishing is like out of a Lund, Mike will say ‘Send him on down,’” Win says with a chuckle. Mike’s Barber Shop is, in many ways, an emblem of a time gone by. On a late August day, his one-chair business sees a steady stream of youngsters looking for a back-to-school haircut, and men—obviously regulars—stopping by for a trim and a chat. Others come in just to talk about fishing or farming or high school football over a cup of coffee. Mike has become a celebrity of sorts in Schoolcraft, thanks not only to his friendly, welcoming nature, but also to the ways he gives back to the community. He is part of the high school booster club, and in one corner of his shop a poster reads, “Thanks, Mike, from the 2001 Schoolcraft Eagles,” the town’s high school football team. Recently, Mike and Win developed a generous plan that will further combine their love for fishing and their commitment to outreach. The duo formed Downtime Ministries, a program that takes ministers and deacons out on free fishing trips. “Win called me one day and shared (Opposite, clockwise from top left) Mike gives a client a trim in his Schoolcraft barbershop; Mike shows off a steelhead caught by friend Guy Stutzman on a Lake Michigan fishing outing; Mike takes family friends Jack (middle) and Bill Hunt sunset fishing for stocked rainbow trout on Southern Michigan’s Little Paw Paw Lake. his dream to do this,” Mike says. “The idea was that we each have worked hard at our day jobs for 30-plus years and have been very blessed, so why not start a ministry to share the blessing by taking people fishing who need a break from a hectic life and who otherwise couldn’t afford to go.” “Pastors and pastoral staff are overworked and underpaid,” Win adds. “They often don’t have the resources to buy the equipment, even though a lot of them love to fish. At a recent seminar I learned how many pastors and priests leave the ministry each year because of stress—it’s a crazy number. We can provide a way for them to relax and kick back, just enjoy a day on the water and recharge.” In the two years since starting Downtime Ministries, Mike has taken about 40 groups fishing in a wide variety of places. “That’s the beauty of the 2000 Alaskan—really, all the Lund boats I’ve owned,” Mike says. “I can launch it at a little ramp on a little inland lake and take guys fishing for stocked trout at night. Then two days later I can be out trolling for salmon on Lake Michigan. Then I can take a group bluegill fishing one day and go jigging for walleyes on the Detroit River the next.” Mike and Win have taken steps to expand the Downtime Ministries program, as well. “We’re progressing into taking troubled teens, less fortunate teens, maybe kids who don’t have fathers or a male figure in their lives,” Win says. “If we can get them out in a boat and show them how we live, how we feel, maybe we can turn a life around. If we help just one kid out, it will all be worthwhile.” Why not find another use for Mike’s incredibly versatile Alaskan? After all, the boat has hosted everyone from ministers to customers to flat-out strangers. Come to think of it, Mike’s Lund Alaskan is quite like his bustling barbershop—a welcoming, dependable hub that continues to bring people joy year after year. — ——— 18 | LUND www.lundboats.com —— — —— — www.lundboats.com LUND | 19 STORY BY ELLI THOMPSON :: PHOTOS BY MIKE CALABRO The bright sun beams down on Lake Ray Hubbard, just outside Dallas. Today’s autumn rays have a gentleness to them not common during a year that has seen scorching temperatures and scant rain throughout much of Texas. Even the wind is more forgiving today, allowing the pristine lake to lie in perfect stillness. The only disruption comes from the periodic splashing of the bobber on Melanie Roby’s line. Although the day exudes an air of peacefulness, the 16year-old has a determination that could shatter the calm like an ice pick. She’s hoping for a top place in the 20th annual Turning Point Juniors’ Fishing Tournament, and she knows her persistence will pay off. “I got one!” Melanie exclaims some minutes later. She grins from ear to ear and begins reeling in her prize—an 8-inch sunfish whose yellow scales glint in the midday sun. Melanie turns her wheelchair toward the bow of the Lund 1900 Pro-V and poses for a photo that will document her catch. The Pro-V then blasts back to shore, where friends eagerly wait to see if Melanie had any luck. Jason Swanson, who has assisted in running the tournament for the past 10 years, gives Melanie a congratulatory high-five before welcoming another kid onboard his Lund. — —— Jason grew up in Minnesota, where he developed his intense passion for outdoor activities. At age 17, he was in a car accident that left him paralyzed in both legs. The years that followed were frustrating and isolating, until Jason met Shorty Powers, the founder of Turning Point. Founded in 1979, Turning Point offers an array of outdoor activities for people of all ages with physical challenges. From hunting and fishing to waterskiing, kayaking and more, Turning Point provides free or low-cost activities that help participants develop confidence and enthusiasm for adventure. Jason began working for Turning Point more than a decade ago and has developed a keen interest in leading the organization’s youth programs. His greatest reward has been helping those kids (some are the same age Jason was when he suffered his debilitating injury) learn or rediscover the fun in outdoor pursuits. “The biggest thing I get out of Turning Point is working with kids,” Jason says, as he pushes the throttle on his Pro-V and heads toward the center of Lake Ray Hubbard with Josiah Puyear (14) and his family. “I love getting them out here, doing things they didn’t think they could do.” Although Jason has certainly built a successful and rewarding life—including participating and placing in bass tournaments throughout the country—he only recently discovered true freedom on the water. When he first began tournament fishing, he didn’t own a boat and had — —— 22 | LUND www.lundboats.com Opposite Jason and Melanie try their luck near shore. Clockwise from above: Melanie has been a longtime member of Turning Point; Jason steers his Pro-V toward deeper water; the spacious bow casting deck puts Jason in perfect position; Jason hopes to upgrade from the already spacious 1900 Pro-V to the 2075 Pro-V. —— —— www.lundboats.com LUND | 23 to climb aboard friends’ rigs, leaving his wheelchair on shore due to space constraints. “When you leave your wheelchair at the dock,” he says, “it’s like leaving your legs at the dock.” After enduring more than his fair share of wearisome outings, Jason saw an opportunity for change when he returned to Minnesota on a family visit. His father owned a Lund, and Jason immediately saw the potential for independent angling with the Lund’s wide-open layout. He purchased his 1900 Pro-V in 2007, and has been hammering the tournament circuit ever since. “I love my Pro-V,” he says with a satisfied grin. “It brings independence to me. I can do everything myself; I don’t need anyone’s help.” Jason’s 1900 provides not only plenty of room for him to board in his wheelchair, but also generous space for other guests—even other wheelchair-bound friends. “The Pro-V has a great layout with its open deck,” Jason says. “My friend, who’s also in a wheelchair, and I can fish all day comfortably. The other anglers in the tournament will be saying, ‘We’re done, our backs hurt,’ and we’ll say, ‘Let’s go fish more!’” The Pro-V’s onboard comfort is appreciated today on Lake Ray Hubbard, with several people sitting and moving about onboard with ease. But even when the water isn’t so cooperative, the rock-solid construction of the Pro-V dampens vibration and cuts through rough chop. “Last year, I was fishing on Lake Eufaula in Oklahoma,” he says. “There were 4-foot stabbing waves, but the durability, the toughness of the boat, the way it handles rough water… The other bass boats can’t keep up with me. Lund is just a totally different breed.” Jason’s newfound poise on his Lund has paid dividends for his tournament credentials. He fishes the Paralyzed Veterans of America Bass Tour throughout the year. In 2010, he took fourth place in the Angler of the Year rankings and won two Open Division events; in 2011, he won the Open Division and team championship on New Hampshire’s Lake Winnepesaukee. “Once I started fishing on my own, I developed more technique and more confidence,” Jason says. Though Jason hopes to purchase a brand-new Jason, who has helped organize and run the Turning Point Juniors’ Tournament for more than 10 years, takes kids onboard his 1900 Pro-V from early afternoon to evening. He can’t help but cast a line or two himself—he’s built up a slough of accolades as a participant in the Paralyzed Veterans of America Bass Tour. “The Pro-V has a great layout with its open deck. My friends and I can fish all day comfortably. Lund is just a totally different breed.” Lund in the coming year, his 1900 is more than doing the trick today. Josiah snags a whopping 26-inch buffalo fish. After documenting Josiah’s catch, Jason heads back to shore once again, nodding to another driver on the water who’s also taking kids out for rounds of fishing on his boat. In addition to fishing out on the lake, the kids in the Turning Point Juniors’ Tournament can fish back at the docks. After many years of holding the tournament in East Texas, it now takes place in Garland so families don’t have to travel such a long distance and find overnight lodging. Whether caught from a Lund or from the docks, the largest fish (by general size, not weight) in each species category wins a prize, with the overall winner receiving the grand prize of his or her own two-person kayak, paddles and lifejackets. Best of all, each kid gets a new fishing rod, lure and tackle just for showing up. Overall, Turning Point gives away $700 to $800 in prizes, with money garnered from donations. Jason has been running kids out on fishing rounds for a couple of hours so far today, and he’ll continue to do so until sunset, when the whole group of more than 60 participants, family, volunteers and friends will gather for a barbecue. “When we do these events, the kids always ask, ‘Can I bring a friend?’” Jason says. “Yes! I want you to bring a friend. I want them to see that you are able. Turning Point takes the ‘dis’ out of disabled.” Just one Turning Point outing—whether it’s a campout, a horseback-riding adventure or a fishing trip—and kids are usually hooked. “Once they come, they’re pretty much coming back,” Jason says with a laugh as he approaches the swarm of kids fishing from the dock. “Every time I see these kids throughout the year, they ask me, ‘What’s the date of the tournament?’” Everyone back at the dock is eager for a turn on Jason’s Lund. Lucky for them, they’ll all get the chance. There’s plenty of sun left, and Jason is far from tiring. Over the years, he’s developed a perspective he’s convinced he wouldn’t possess had he never been injured. “If anything, I think I’m better for it,” he says affirmatively. “You learn patience…and compassion.” Melanie, who’s been casting from the dock ever since her spin on the Pro-V, hooks another big one. After reeling it in, she glances over at Jason with a look that’s equal parts pride and determination—the same determination she exuded earlier this afternoon. It’s not hard to see from whom she draws her inspiration. There’s no doubt Melanie will be back next year. As will Jason—perhaps with a brand-new Lund Pro-V in tow. — —— 24 | LUND www.lundboats.com 2012 ALuminum And Jon Boats catalog By Fishermen, For Fishermen Whether you’re just diving into the sport, you’ve been passionately casting lines your whole life or your life’s work involves fishing, you’ve come to the right place. The innovative I-beam construction of Lund hulls ties longitudinal and transverse beams together for a hardy, durable build that can take a pounding without skipping a beat. Hardcore anglers can strap the industry’s brawniest engines to their Lunds thanks to heavy-duty transoms, which are bolted directly to the longitudinal I-beams and knee-braced for strength and stability. Lund’s craftsmen dedicate just as much attention to the interior of the boat, building with the industry’s finest, most durable marine-grade treated plywood—reinforced, of course, for even more stability. When it comes to durability and longevity, you can never have too much. Lund’s engineers know this, and the built-tough reputation that precedes every Lund boat coming out of the factory is a result of their excesses. The seams of Lund boats are double-riveted just like airplanes, which endure speeds approaching the sound barrier. Though your Lund will never face that kind of force, you certainly won’t need to question its ability to withstand anything on the water. “They’re the toughest and the best-riding fishing boats out there. The IPS system utilizes a central power strake that helps to drive down spray and flatten the wake, providing a drier, smoother ride. The deeper V and additional power strakes of the IPS 2 help bigger boats produce the same smooth, dry ride. Driven down from the front of the hull, the water hits a flat pad in the rear of the hull bottom, reducing churn. The non-turbulent water creates less motor strain and, ultimately, delivers better performance. Wide reverse chines operate like trim tabs, allowing for precise cornering maneuvers and overall improved boat control. They allow the boat to get on plane quicker and improve holeshot, as well. A wider footprint improves onboard stability. Anglers will appreciate better backtrolling, superior drift control and more sophisticated boat positioning. The IPS integrates all these features into a cohesive system that provides Lund boats with faster, higher, smoother and drier rides, with performance that outpaces other fishing boats. 11 Optimal material performance, using marine-grade 5052 H34 aluminum 12 Stainless steel cleats A WIDER FOOTPRINT 13 Heavy-duty aluminum corner casting 14 Insulated livewell and baitwell doors 15 Double-riveted seams and single-row riveting for other connections, plus strategic welding for low-stress connections The Lund IPS™ delivers non-turbulent water to the propeller to enhance overall performance. The reverse chine, power strake, and wider footprint together deliver unmatched performance. 16 Injected foam flotation exceeds Coast Guard requirements and quiets the ride 17 Brilliant I-beam construction, with longitudinal and transverse beams tied together for the ultimate in strength and rigidity COMPETITOR FOOTPRINT LUND IPS™ FOOTPRINT www.lundboats.com LUND | 3 FLOATS YOUR BOAT Many things set Lund boats apart from competitors, but none so much as the incredible stability and flotation ensured by Lund’s foam-injected hull. Lund strategically inserts closed-cell foam (formulated to handle all marine conditions) into hull cavities. Lund fills each boat with enough foam to exceed Coast Guard and industry requirements, and performs tests on all vessels before they leave the production line to verify they maintain equal and level flotation. Some boat companies do enough, but Lund believes in doing more. When it comes to safety, just “good enough” is never enough. To further prove its boats’ seaworthiness, Lund engineers put the “holey boat” to the test. After drilling 66 five-inch holes into the hull of a 1725 Explorer SS, the engineers took it for a spin—and stayed afloat and level the whole time. A JOB WELL DONE Lund’s pioneering work with livewells keeps your catch healthier and less prone to stress PROLONG PLUS PROLONG AERATED The envy of the industry and the most technologically advanced system to ever hit the water, the ProLong Plus is designed with a freshwater pickup integrated into the bottom of the hull, where it forces a steady flow of water into the livewell while the boat is running. This two-pump design keeps water fresher and fish calmer than any other in the industry. One pump fills and aerates the well from above the fish, while the other recirculates and injects fresh air via the Max-Air system for maximum oxygenation. Lund’s high-quality aerated livewell features a single pump with a single-switch control. You also have the option of running the aerator pump continuously in manual mode, or intermittently in automatic mode when the model is equipped with a timer. 4 | LUND www.lundboats.com A POWERFUL COMBINATION No matter which Lund you choose, the strength, dependability and reputation of Mercury come with it MASTERS OF THE WATER Every good angler has an equally capable partner, and when it comes to the world’s best-built fishing boats, it’s no different.
