mployment
Las Vegas has consistently maintained the highest new job growth in
the United States. Since 1990, Las Vegas has also ranked number one
in high-tech job growth (primarily high-tech services). The Nevada
labor force has increased by nearly 350,000 people in the last decade.
Not surprisingly, the construction industry continues to be a major
employer in Southern Nevada as the demands for residential, resort,
office and industrial space continue to soar.
Gaming, Las Vegas’ trademark industry, has served as the catalyst for
the lion’s share of the Valley’s phenomenal growth and outstanding
economic success. From finance to construction and retail to service,
Las Vegas’ tourist and entertainment venues and hotel and casino
resort properties promise a steady demand for jobs as well as create a
wealth of new business opportunities.
Employment Cards/Certification
If you are hired in a food and beverage or child care position, you must
obtain a health card from the Clark County Health District. If you are
hired in the hotel or gaming industry, some positions are required to have a
Sheriff’s Work Card. A referral from the hotel/casino is required in order to
get the Sheriff’s Card. If you handle or work directly around liquor, you are
required to have an Alcohol Education Card.

COMMUNITIES OF THE
LAS VEGAS AREA
Boulder City
Considering that much of the city was undeveloped desert not too long
ago, it should be no surprise that everything in Las Vegas seems new.
Schools, shopping centers, roads, parks, apartments, home rentals and
community sub-divisions all have a very clean and modern feel. And
as the development continues Las Vegas has emerged as a city that is
constantly re-inventing itself. There are abundant housing developments
to choose houses and apartments from.

DAY TRIPS
Valley of Fire State Park
You can see some great sandstone formations as well as visible signs of
ancient residents of the area. Early evening light introduces you to colors
you never knew existed.
Grand Canyon
The park consists of 277 miles of the Colorado River and its massive
erosional effects on the surrounding landscape. The Grand Canyon can
be enjoyed from either the south or the north rims. The Grand Canyon is
located about 250 miles from Las Vegas.
Red Rock Canyon
It is a scenic area of rock formations and desert with a 3,000-foot
escarpment produced by a thrust fault. Red Rock Canyon has a Bureau
of Land Management visitors center and is home to feral horses, wild
burros, bighorn sheep, coyotes and a variety of desert plant life.
Bryce Canyon
The sandstone cliffs at Bryce Canyon will impress you with their peculiar
colors. Take a hike down into one of the canyons and watch as birds soar
high above the pinnacles that surround you.
Bonnie Springs Old Nevada
An old western town in Red Rock Canyon, with a motel, petting zoo,
shops, activities and western shootouts. If you want to see what the real
Las Vegas was like this is your chance.
BMX Track
Race your cruiser over a 1500 foot long dirt track of turns and obstacles.
If you like riding your bike around your neighborhood or on a homemade
track or jumps, then you’ll like this competitive type of racing.
Mt. Charleston
Reaches a staggering height of 11,913 feet, and it is the third-highest
peak in Nevada.
Zion National Park
One of the most awe inspiring sights in the American Southwest.
Featuring sky-high towers and cliffs of multicolored sandstone rocks,
the 2,000 to 3,000-foot high canyon walls of Zion National Park were
carved out over millions of years by trickling creeks and the rushing
Virgin River.
Spring Mountain Ranch State Park
Beneath the colorful cliffs of the magnificent Wilson Range. The many
springs in these mountains provided water for Paiute Indians.

PRIVATE SCHOOLS
HIGHER EDUCATION
Private schools, known as independent schools, are not
administered by local, state or national governments;
thus, they retain the right to select their students and are
funded in whole or in part by charging their students
tuition, rather than relying on public (state) funds.
The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) was
formed in 1968 to oversee all state-supported higher
education in the U.S. state of Nevada. Two doctoralgranting research universities, one state college,
four community colleges and one research institute
comprise the system. About 98,000 students attend the
degree-granting campuses.
Besides the excellent public school system, Las Vegas
private schools provides a wealth of knowledge to the
expanding youth population. Las Vegas is contained
within the tenth largest school district in the United
States. Also, Las Vegas has more than 200+ public
schools.

Performing Arts Center at UNLV
Planning for a Center for the Performing Arts
at UNLV began in 1966, ten years before
the opening of the Artemus W. Ham Concert
Hall. The initial idea for the center came from
then University President Donald C. Moyer.
Since Las Vegas was an entertainment capital,
Moyer thought it only natural for Las Vegas’s
University to be nationally prominent in its
musical and theatrical offerings; a Center for
the Performing Arts would help the University
attain this status.
