The Hon'ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Shri
Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, inaugurated the new premises
of Sankara Nethralaya Kolkata, a state-of-the-art, 50,000
sq. ft G+5 super-speciality eye-hospital on a 0.55 acre plot
at 147, Mukundapur, EM Bypass. This facility can cater to
more than 500 patients per day.
The Hon'ble Governor of West Bengal, Shri Gopalkrishna
Gandhi, launched a new initiative by Sankara Nethralaya,
Kolkata - the mobile tele-ophthalmology community
service project.
Built with the support of Paschim Banga Rajya
Pratibandhi Sammilini, the unit has all the sub-specialties
available, including complicated retinal surgeries,
glaucoma, squint and paediatric cataract surgeries. The
centre will grow into a dedicated super-speciality eye
hospital and will act as a referral centre for the entire
eastern region of the country and neighbouring countries
such as Bangladesh and Nepal.
Sankara Nethralaya started its services in Kolkata in
December 2002 and was serving the needs of about 200
patients per day. In a span of 17 months almost 75,000
patients have been examined and around 2500 surgeries
performed. The current team of 6 consultants working
with the centre in Kolkata will be expanded by 50% once
services begin from the new premises. All the consultants
have had their training at Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai.
The team is led by Dr Sujata Guha, an extremely
experienced ophthalmologist specializing in Paediatric
ophthalmology and Strabismiology for the last 11 years.
The community operation theatre is named after the late
Dr Sameer Biswas, a well known ophthalmologist of
Kolkata. Sankara Nethralaya is also proud to dedicate the
hospital's library to Dr Murali Sen Gupta, a legendary
ophthalmologist and a teacher to many of the present
generation ophthalmologists.
To facilitate the community ophthalmology work Sankara
Nethralaya is introducing three mobile vans that will be
both for tele-ophthalmology as well as for spectacle
dispensing in the villages. The mobile vans that support
community work would be fully equipped for eye
examination in the village itself, and images of the eye
examination will be transmitted to the main hospital at
Mukundapur via satellite. Patients needing further
evaluation will be brought to the main hospital.
A lot more patients can be served by this approach since
many of them may not need to visit the main campus but
can be advised via satellite connection itself. We solicit the
help of social service organizations to help us to conduct
these camps in the villages.
Each van will have the facility to examine patients with the
basic required equipment. An optometrist and a social
worker will be in the van in addition to the driver. The van
will also have facility to make spectacles as prescribed on
examination.
The glasses can be made and delivered in the village itself
in a short time saving their need for the villagers to travel to
the nearby town. Medical advice is also made possible by
beaming the images of the eye to the main hospital where a
qualified ophthalmologist will look at there and advise to
the extent possible.
Any patient needing more advanced examination or
treatment will be encouraged to travel to Kolkata for
investigations and treatment at the main centre. The vans
will go thorough villages by turns and attempt to cover as
large an area as possible.
The vans will also have facilities to educate the people on
common eye ailments and ocular hygiene. Eye donation
awareness will be also improved among the people by
appropriate measures including screening of movies that
propagate the idea. Further, the tele-ophthalmology team
would be involved in educating the local community about
eye care in general. Training of teachers in schools to
identify gross visual impairment in the children would also
be a part of the project.

LASIK centre inaugurated at Kolkata
Globally, uncorrected refractive errors remain one of the
leading causes of visual impairment. In a move aimed to
enhance the treatment options for the management of
refractive errors, Sankara Nethralaya is introducing a
state-of-the-art LASIK CENTRE at AJC Bose Road,
Kolkata. The WaveLight® FS200 Femtosecond Laser also
called as the bladeless laser is the FIRST in the Eastern
region and only the 3rd in the country.

The Aditya Birla Group and Sankara Nethralaya have
joined hands to augment eye care service delivery in India.
Sankara Nethralaya's eye hospital at Kolkata has been
renamed Aditya Birla Sankara Nethralaya.
Speaking at the renaming function on April 29, 2011,
Chairman Emeritus, Sankara Nethralaya, Dr. S S
Badrinath said, “For an NGO like us to grow, it requires the
support of business houses like Aditya Birla to lend their
help and support to our cause of serving the poor. We seek
to make this the number one eye hospital in the country…”

'Bengal Leads' an ambitious initiative by the government
of West Bengal under the stewardship of Honourable Chief
Minister Mamata Banerjee to put the State on the fast track
to growth and development was organized on the 9th of
January, 2012 at the Milan Mela, Trade Fair Complex,
Kolkata. The high power function was presided over by the
Honourable Chief Minister in the presence of her Cabinet
Colleagues and senior bureaucrats.
The Silanyas of Sankara Nethralaya's 4th eye care center to
come up at a sprawling area at Rajarhaat which would
include a hospital, learning center and research facilities
was performed by Honourable Chief Minister Mamata
Banerjee on this momentous occasion. Dr SS.Badrinath,
Chairman Emeritus, Dr.S.Bhaskaran, Chairman,
Dr. Vasanthi Badrinath, Director, Laboratory Services,
Sankara Nethralaya and Dr. Sujatha Guha Medical
Director, Dr Sagar Bhargava, Deputy Director and
Ms. Rita Das, Administrator from Aditya Birla Sankara
Nethralaya were present at the function.
State-of-art Wavelight ® FS 200 Femtosecond laser machine
Refractive errors myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia
(long-sightedness) and astigmatism (cylindrical error)
can be treated either by wearing spectacles, contact lenses
or undergoing refractive surgery (LASIK - Laser-Assisted
In-Situ Keratomileusis). LASIK is a fairly well established
and safe procedure which is being practised as one of the
most commonly performed procedures in the world.
The flap creation in LASIK is done by a motorised
microkeratome which creates a flap of predetermined
thickness. Very rarely microkeratome related problems
could lead to complications or abandonment of the
procedure. To overcome these potential problems a new
technology has evolved, which makes use of ultra short
pulses of laser energy (known as Femtosecond laser) to
create a flap in the cornea. The proven predictability,
consistency and uniformity of flaps created by the
femtosecond laser makes it a more precise tool in the
hands of a refractive surgeon. The size, thickness and
position of the flap can be varied according to the patient's
needs. Flap related complications are much rarer with the
Femtoscond laser than with the microkeratome.
ALLEGRETTO WAVE® Eye-Q 400 Hz is the machine that
will be used to carry out the treatment. This excimer laser
platform is one of the most advanced and fastest excimer
laser platforms available in the market today. This
translates into more comfortable procedure for patients.
This LASIK system uses a wavefront-optimized
technology treatment that is adjusted to the patient's
individual corneal curvature. This results in reducing
significantly unwanted side effects like poor night vision,
glare, and halos seen with conventional LASIK treatment.

Sankara Nethralaya Kolkata is administered by Medical Research Foundation/ Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai. A local
Advisory Committee has been formed to advise Medical Research Foundation, Chennai, on important local Sankara
Nethralaya Kolkata issues from time to time.
The Advisory Comiittee will work both with the administration team at Kolkata and Chennai in planning and carrying out
ideas for the development of Sankara Nethralay Kolkata. The Advisory Committee will advise on specific areas of
development of Sankara Nethralaya Kolkata. This will include upgrading the facility, marketing of the hospital, introducing
new procedures, and free treatment to indigent patients. The Advisory Committee will also assist the hospital in getting

Sankara Ratna Award to Sri Agarwala
Swami Prabhanandaji presents the Sankara Ratna Award to Shri.Hanuman Prasad Agarwala at Kolkata.
For his outstanding support and distinguished services to
Sankara Nethralaya, Shri. Hanuman Prasad Agarwala was
conferred with the 2008 Sankara Ratna Award at a
function held in Kolkata on August 16, 2009. He was
presented with the award by Chief Guest Swami
Prabhananda Ji, General Secretary, Ramakrishna Math
and Mission, Belur, West Bengal.
Shri. Hanuman Prasad Agarwala, through his diligence
and commendable business acumen, has successfully
established several businesses over the years. He entered
the family business at the young age of 14 and has set up a
business of petroleum products and motor parts in Nepal
apart from establishing Hanuman Prasad Lakshmi
Narayan (Transport), an oil tanker business.
His ability to tide over crises with immense courage and an
indomitable spirit has been a source of inspiration to all of
those who have worked with him.
A dedicated philanthropist, Shri. Hanuman Prasad
Agarwala has worked untiringly to establish a tuberculosis
sanatorium, to which he has donated his personal and
family wealth, in his native town, Sikar, Rajasthan. As part
of the Chinmaya Mission family, he has contributed his
time and money for the welfare of the children of the
Chinmaya Mission.
Associated with Sankara Nethralaya since 1976, Shri.
Hanuman Prasad Agarwala has been an ardent supporter
of Nethralaya's cause. He has offered unwavering support
to Sankara Nethralaya by helping organise events and
raise funds. Sankara Nethralaya is indebted to Shri.
Hanuman Prasad Agarwala for very magnanimously
offering his family property, free of rent, to set up a
hospital in Kolkata. He has supported with his heart the
establishment, development and growth of Sankara Deva
Nethralaya, Guwahati, an institution with which Sankara
Nethralaya is collaborating. Shri Hanuman Prasad
Agarwala remains a pillar of strength and inspiration to
the Nethralaya family.
Among those present on the occasion were senior
members of Sankara Nethralaya - Dr. S.S. Badrinath
(Chairman Emeritus), Shri V. Vaidhyanathan (Chairman),
Dr. K.S. Vasan (Managing Director), Dr. Lingam Gopal
(Director of Research, VRF) and Dr. Sujata Guha (Medical
Director). Shri. Agarwala's family as well as Mr. Todi and
his family were also present.
Community Services
Sankara Nethralaya-Kolkata completes 1,000 free cataract surgeries
When the rural teleophthalmology project was
inaugurated in West Bengal on January 23, 2009 , there
was a magnanimous gesture made on the occasion to
benefit the rural poor of West Bengal. Bellary Iron Ores
Pvt. Ltd Managing Director Shri. S.K. Modi, well-wisher of
Sankara Nethralaya, committed to sponsor 1,000 cataract
surgeries which were to be completed in a year's time.
In the months to follow, Sankara Nethralaya-Kolkata
slowly and steadily took its eye care services to the
doorsteps of the rural poor. In November 2009, the
hospital was able to complete the 1,000 cataract surgeries
which Shri. Modi had so graciously sponsored. A
combined effort by our ophthalmologists, optometrists
and other teleophthalmology staff ensured that the target
surgeries were completed in under a year's time.

The Tele-ophthalmology team at the Aditya Birla Sankara
Nethralaya reached a new milestone in outreach and
community ophthalmology by conducting a two day eye
care camp in one of the most remote and inaccessible parts
of the State. The camp co-ordinated by Shri Kaushik
Adhikary, Senior Optometrist, Aditya Birla Sankara
Nethralaya was conducted at Dayapur, Kosaba in the
Sunderbans region which is among the most economically
and socially backward regions with the lowest literacy rate
and an alarmingly high instance of water borne infections
caused due to non-availability of clean water. The area
selected typified a no man's land with the nearest tarred
road ending miles away at the 24 parganas, and no supply
of electricity. The fact that there were no roads in sight,
would help us gauge the availability of eye care, which
made it a challenge to the Aditya Birla Sankara Nethralaya
Tele-ophthalmology Team.
The outdoor team travelled for 3 hours by motorboat and
when the water level was too shallow for a motorized boat
to sail they switched over to a smaller boat for a 20 minute
sail in the swampy marshlands between the thick
Sankara Nethralaya Kolkata, along with Jhargram,
Midnapore District Police conducted a Free Eye check up
camp at Belpabari Block office of West Midnapore district
on 4th and 5th December 2010 (Saturday and Sunday).

Baske who is mother of a
Maoist leader Jagari Baske,
“The extremist group, wanted
by police”. Mrs.Gurubari
informed that she has no
knowledge of her wanted
daughter for years together. “She is dead to me”, she
added. Mrs.Gurubari Baske would be taken to Sankara
Nethralaya, Kolkata on 10 Dec, 2010 for Free Cataract
Surgery. Superintendent of Police, Mr.Praveen Tripathi
informed that a total of 530 people have been screened
over last two days, out of which 258 people were
distributed free glasses and 80 were selected for surgery.

lift unsuspecting boat passengers venturing close to the
shore by making a sudden appearance from behind the
mangroves.
A huge crowd of 700 villagers waiting expectantly with
hopes of gaining better vision, unmindful of the heavy
downpour made the day for the Tele-ophthalmology team
and made their arduous ordeal worthwhile, the hope and
faith reposed in them by the simple villagers who had no
other means to eye care filled the members of the Teleophthalmology team with a strong sense of purpose and
infused them with new energy levels. The outdoor team
examined 330 people in strict adherence to protocol and
the rest were given an alternate date for their screening.
Over 80 spectacles were distributed free on the spot and
specifications noted for 230 pairs and 61 patients were
identified as needing cataract surgery.
July 28th and 29th would be remembered as red letter
days in Sankara Nethralaya's community ophthalmology
initiatives and a strong example of the spirit of reaching
out passionately. The Gosaba camp in close proximity to
the Sajnekhali Tiger Reserve forest was an ultimate
challenge to the will and resilience of the Aditya Birla
Sankara Nethralaya Tele-Ophthalmology team and
triggered the spirit of adventure in them for a noble cause.

terrorism in three districts of West Bengal. Aloka Devi
comes with Mr.Haripada who is the brother of Ranjit.
Aloka Devi told “for a long time she didn't see her son
Ranjit, she doesn't have any connection and contacts of
him, a policeman of Barikul Thana brought us to this eye
camp, from few days I am having difficulties to see; now
my problem has solved”.
Almost 300 patients were seen in this camp.

An eye bank at Sankara Nethralaya-Kolkata was
inaugurated on July14, 2010 by Shri. R.S Falor, who apart
from his personal contributions played a pivotal role in
garnering support from the people of West Bengal and
there by helping Sankara Nethralaya. Doctors spoke on the
importance of eye donation and how the noble cause can
help address corneal blindness in the country.
His Holiness Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal of the
Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam visited Sankara NethralayaKolkata on April 29, 2010. At a small function held at the
premises, Swamji interacted with advisory committee
members, doctors and staff of SN. He expressed his
happiness at the work done by Sankara NethralayaKolkata, including the institute's teleophthalmology
services offered at various districts of West Bengal.
Duty, Devotion and Discipline

the highlight of Prof. Prema
Pandurang's address to the team

An acclaimed writer and
spiritual speaker, Prof. Prema
Pandurang visited Sankara
Nethralaya-Kolkata on May 12,
2010. At an in-house gathering she spoke on 'Gita & dayto-day life.' The institute's advisory committee members,
doctors and staff participated at the event.
Fusion 2009
Fusion 2009, an ophthalmic panorama by Sankara
Nethralaya - Kolkata, was organised from August 15 to
August 16, 2009 at Kolkata where symposiums on
cataract, glaucoma, paediatric ophthalmology,
vitreoretinal diseases and cornea were held. Nearly 200
ophthalmologists from the eastern region, including
ophthalmologist from Sankara Nethralaya Chennai and
Kolkata participated in the two-day event. Optimizing
results of cataract surgery, Neovascular Glaucoma, Vision
assessment and prescribing glasses in children and
challenges in ocular surface disease were some of the
topics discussed.
Reliving the leelas of Radha and Krishna
Considering the growing demand to provide quality eye
care services to the entire eastern region, the West Bengal
Government has allotted four acres at Rajar Haat to
Sankara Nethralaya for setting up its new super specialty
eye care institution. The dance drama was held to raise
funds for the institution's new venture.
The new 2 lakh sq.ft. super specialty institution will offer
all sub specialities of ophthalmology and will also serve as
a recognized academic institution offering e-learning
courses as well as training programmes in various fields
including nursing and optometry.
A soulful performance by Hiren Parpani and his troupe
from Mumbai brought to life the leelas of Radha and
Krishna in the 'City of joy'. Sathavaro Radhe Shyamno, a
benefit dance drama, in aid of Sankara Nethralaya, was
held at the Science City Auditorium in Kolkata, on April 2
& 3, 2011.
West Bengal Governor Shri MK Narayanan, who graced
the occasion as chief guest on April 2, welcomed Sankara
Nethralaya's plans to expand its services in West
Bengal.West Bengal Transportation Secretary Shri. Rajpal
Singh Kahlor was the Chief Guest on April 3. Dr. Tarun
Sharma, Director, Fund-raising, spoke on the growth of
Sankara Nethralaya and on the institution's fundraisinginitiatives. This is Hiren Parpani and his troupe's
second performance for Sankara Nethralaya.

A new milestone in clinical diagnosis

There could not have been a more auspicious beginning to
Sankara Nethralaya's initiative to bring State of the Art
diagnosis to the East of India, His Holiness Jagadguru
Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal made his divine presence
and blessed the Polymerase Chain Reaction laboratory by
lighting a holy lamp. The Sankaracharya later made a most
heartwarming address to the doctors and staff members of
the Aditya Birla Sankara Nethralaya, the pontiff
underlined to the audience that they were rendering one of
the most noblest services in the form of eye care and
fulfilling their duty of providing vision to humanity, he
exhorted them to live up to the high expectations placed on
this role.
The inaugural of the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
Laboratory started with a holy invocation after which Dr
Sujata Guha, Medical Director, Aditya Birla Sankara
Nethralaya extended a most warm welcome to the
dignitaries, to the assembled doctor fraternity and their
families, Sankara Nethralaya staff and their families.
The Chief Guest of the day Dr Mammen Chandy was
introduced by Dr. Jyotirmay Biswas, Director, Uvea and
Pathology Departments and honoured by
Dr SS.Badrinath, Chairman Emeritus. This was
followed by the introduction and honouring of Swami
Smaranandaji Maharaj by Dr Abhijit Sarkar, HOD,
Laboratory Services, Aditya Birla Sankara Nethralaya.
After an interesting audio-visual presentation on the
PCR laboratory and dedication of the Murals by Swami
Smaranandaji Maharaj, Professor HN. Madhavan,
President, Vision Research Foundation gave an indepth presentation on the critical role of PCR as a
process in accurate and quick diagnosis.
Chief Guest Dr.Mammen Chandy declared open the
Laboratory describing it s a 'Life-Saving' facility, he
underlined the need for such advanced diagnostic
processes with a real life instance. The function
concluded with Swami Swaranandaji Maharaj
blessing the laboratory and delivery of a Vote of
Thanks by Dr K.Lily Therese, Professor and HOD of
the Microbiology Department.
The inauguration of the PCR laboratory was followed
by a one day Continuing Medical Education
symposium on Clinical diagnosis and laboratory
investigations in infections, emphasizing on rapid
molecular microbiological tests under the aegis of
Senior Medicare Professionals.
Faculty members from Sankara Nethralaya and
leading healthcare institutions participated in the
symposium and discussed the clinical challenges in
infections including ophthalmic infections and the
latest techniques in laboratory diagnosis.
The session helped to throw new light on fields like
Clinico-pathological and microbiological correlations,
endophthalmitis, orbital infections and PCR. The
session also witnessed interesting case presentations,
panel discussions and concluded with a most
informative Q&A session.

Dr. Sujata Guha graduated from NRS Medical College,
Kolkata in 1994. She did her Diploma in
Ophthalmology in 1997 from Tamil Nadu Dr M.G.R
Medical University and Diplomate of National Board
(DNB) in 1998 from Medical Research Foundation and FRCS (Edin) in
September 2000. She served as consultant in the department of
Paediatric Ophthalmology, Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai before moving
to Kolkata.

Dr.Sagar Bhargava
Dr.Sagar Bhargava serves as Deputy Director at Aditya
Birla Sankara Nethralaya, Kolkata.
Dr Sagar Bhargava completed his graduation (1997)
and MS in Ophthalmology (2003) from Govt. Medical
College Aurangabad, Maharashtra. Further he did his
fellowship in General Ophthalmology at Sankara
Nethralaya, Chennai. . He has also qualified the ICO
(International Council of Ophthalmology
Examination in Basic and Clinical Sciences in
Ophthalmology) in the year 2003. In the year 2008 he was conferred with
FRCS (Glasgow). Dr.Sagar Bhargava served as consultant in the
Department of Cornea, Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai before being
deputed as Consultant and Deputy Director at Aditya Birla Sankara
Nethralaya. He has also been entrusted with an additional responsibility
to run operations in Sankara Nethralaya Lasik centre in Kolkata.

He has done various research presentations at various national and
international conferences. He is the recipient of Dr Pandit Palitkar
Memorial Prize for standing first in first MBBS university examination,
Dr Bhalchandra Mukand Dandekar Memorial Prize for standing first in
the subject of Ophthalmology in third MBBS university examination and
Dr R L Bhalchandra Memorial Prize for securing highest marks in MS
(Ophthalmology) university examination in the year 2003 after
successfully clearing the examination. He was adjudged the Best
Associate Consultant for the year 2008 and conferred the Dr TLK Row
Endowment award.
His expertise is in the area of cataract surgery, glaucoma and refractive
surgery.
