The three-masted
barquentine Spirit of New
Zealand is believed to be
probably the world’s busiest
youth ship. Commissioned
in 1986, the ‘Spirit’ spends
around 340 days at sea.
The Spirit of Adventure
Trust which owns ‘Spirit’
was established to provide
the youth of New Zealand
with access to a character
development programme
conducted in a maritime
environment. Subject
to stringent, on-going
maintenance surveys, refits
and audits, Spirit of New
Zealand is expected to be
able to continue operating
youth voyages until around
2020.
In September 2010 ‘Spirit’ commenced an
11 week refit in Whangarei New Zealand.
This extensive program included the removal
of the original 8L3 Gardner engine. Given
that the 286 tonne displacement ‘Spirit’
had experienced two groundings and, as a
tall ship presents high windage in adverse
conditions, a redesign of her propulsion
system was essential.
Passionate about all things propulsion, Tony
Whiting, General Manager of Whiting Power
Systems, (the authorised Yanmar distributor
for New Zealand) relished the opportunity to
advise the Trust on a solution for the engine
room.
Central to the repower was a new Yanmar
6AYM-STE (rated at 490 kW at 1900 rpm
continuous) combined with Hundested VP9.5
(1700 mm diameter) controllable pitch, four
blade propeller.
Adaptability and dependability are key
attributes of Yanmar’s 20.379 litre, 4 valves
per cylinder, in-line 6 cylinder engine that
is offered in four power ratings and models
depending on the application and duty cycle
proposed. Fitting for this project, the Yanmar
6AY offers strong performance, low fuel
consumption and low emissions.
The versatile 6AY Series is suited to a range
of vessels from high-speed planning hulls
such as passenger ferries, patrol craft and
cray fishing boats to heavy duty displacement
type vessels such as fishing trawlers and
tug boats. With good acceleration, strong
performance and class leading fuel economy,
the 6AY Series is popular throughout
international markets.
The Yanmar 6AY combined with the
Hundested VP9.5 (1700 mm diameter)
controllable pitch, four blade propeller
is thought to be a world first for both
manufacturer and distributor. The resulting
efficiency has resulted in reduced fuel burn
while motoring or motor-sailing.
Cruising speed following the Yanmar re-power
is now 10 to 10.5 knots with a top speed of
12.8 knots. Previously, the old engine would
do 4 knots into a head wind, with the best at
7 knots on a good sailing day.
In addition to the propulsion package, Whiting
Power also supplied new Kobelt engine
controls and a Cruisair Air Conditioning
system. Realizing that during such an
extensive project, the budget might not
stretch to comforts such as air conditioning,
Margaret and Tony Whiting together with
Dometic Environmental USA generously
donated equipment to the Trust, identifying
the improvement in the experience that these
systems make, over a wide range of weather
conditions.
With the ‘Spirit’ now back on the water and
sailing better than ever the youth program
is back in full flight. Her programme is
conducted mostly out of her home port
of Auckland into the Hauraki Gulf, but she
makes occasional voyages to the Bay of
Islands, the Bay of Plenty and beyond,
around the East Cape to Wellington and
the Marlborough Sounds area. Voyages
southwards to Lyttelton, Port Chalmers, Bluff
and Stewart Island are also scheduled from
time to time, ensuring the ship’s high public
profile.
The team at Whiting Power Systems and
Yanmar are very proud to support and be a
supplier to such an inspirational organisation
which encourages youth to respect and enjoy
the sea as much as they do.

ZT350 =
UPGRADE
Kristian Boden is a fishing tragic,
wanting only the best equipment to
enjoy his fishing. Often travelling
to remote offshore reefs where
most fishermen with single engines
wouldn’t venture, Kristian and his
faithful Yanmar diesel engine and
Yanmar sterndrive never hesitate
whilst the weather is good.
Safety is always first in Kristians
mind and having a new 8m custom
plate aluminium boat powered with
a Yanmar diesel engine certainly
fitted that bill.
180klms from Darwin Harbour. We had a
following sea on the way out with 10 knots
of breeze so I trimmed the leg up. Around
4 ½ hours of motoring later (the Yanmar
package performed beautifully) we dropped
the lines and were straight into Reds and
Nannygai. We camped out there the night
before returning with a great feed of fish the
following day. The trip back started well until
we got to around Shepparton Shoals when
the wind started to blow 15 - 20 knots. I
trimmed the leg in and once again the engine
and leg didn’t miss a beat. The trip back took
around 5 ½ hours.
The vessel was custom built by Sam Preston
of Performance Plate Boats in Brisbane’s
northern suburbs and originally fitted with the
then recently released 6BY260Z electronic
engine coupled to a Bravo3X sterndrive.
After fishing with this package Kristian
decided to remove the sterndrive and have
Yanmars ZT350 sterndrive installed. With a
hydraulic multi disc gearbox, the Yanmar has
exceptionally smooth and quiet shifting with
the added benefit of improving economy and
performance.
We travelled around 400km on this trip and
used 359L of diesel. I was astonished as to
how quiet the leg was and how smoothly the
leg shifted into gear. I think I’m qualified to
compare the Bravo 3 leg and ZT350 since
I have now used both I have to say shifting
the Bravo 3 leg into gear was an un-nerving
experience. I was always questioning,
was it going to go into gear this time? This
is completely a thing of the past with the
ZT350. About all you feel is motion and
perhaps the reassuring sound of the props
spinning. I have to take my hat off to Yanmar
for a innovative and reliable product.
Late last year and with many months of
planning behind him, Kristian travelled
from Brisbane to Darwin to fish the plentiful
grounds during his holidays. Here is a short
story of that trip as written and provided by
Kristian
Trip 2: We left a couple of days later and
headed to some closer shoals called
Shepparton Shoals. These shoals are around
116kms from Darwin and the target was

out to Flat Top banks which are around

more reef fish and maybe the odd pelagic.
Conditions were a little better and we
motored out there at around 45km per hour.
Total kilometres travelled were 360 km for
268 litres used which I was very impressed
with since the boat weighs around 2.9
tonnes.
All told, after 3 totally enjoyable trips, the
Yanmar 6BY260Z and ZT350 leg travelled a
distance of 1290klms for a fuel burn of 899
litres. This is the best fuel economy I have
had from my boat and it happened once the
ZT350 was fitted. The Yanmar Engine/Leg
combination is perfect for a trailer boat of this
size and I would definitely make this choice
again if I was powering a new boat.
I also have to take my hat off to the team
of Rosshaven Marine who are the Yanmar
dearler in Townsville. They did a sterling job at
swapping out the Bravo 3 leg with the ZT350
and were only too obliging to help. They
always kept me updated on the progress
and I would recommend their service and
customer support to anyone.”
PROJECT
CYCLONE
Yanmar YEG & YDG
Nick Marsden – the North
Queensland Area Manager for
Power Equipment (based in
Townsville) moved the majority
of Power Equipments generator
stock up North in readiness for the
tropical cyclone season. Due to the
unpredictability of cyclones, Nick
made the decision to spread the
stock over several dealers from
Cairns down to Mackay in case
flooding from the cyclones cut
roads and prevented deliveries to
them.
Cyclone Anthony crossed the Qld coast
near Bowen on January 31 as a category
2 with minimal damage whilst Cyclone Yasi
hit on February 2nd crossing the coast near
Mission Beach and Cardwell as a category
5 storm, causing much devastation over a
very large area. Yasi turned out to be the
biggest cyclone to hit Queensland in living
memory.
After Cyclone Anthony hit (with generator
interest skyrocketing) and seeing a new
cyclone not far behind it (which at that
stage was tracking towards Cairns) Nick
Nick Marsden
made a decision to move more stock
further north on the eve of Yasi. So,
after hiring a trailer and loading as many
generators as possible he headed to
KG Mechanical, a Yanmar Industrial and
Marine dealer in Cairns, arriving close to
midnight and turned arounnd immediately.
Arriving back in Townsville at 4.30am he
then commenced to sandbag his house in
preparation for the cyclone before being
evacuated to a shelter ahead of the the
storm’s arrrival.
The next few days after impact were very
hectic for Nick as he again hired a tandem
trailer to deliver the generators to dealers
and customers desperate for power to save
their frozen and fresh food supplies. With
up to 2 deliveries per day travelling 500km
per return trip, the demand for the Yanmar
YDG series of portable diesel gensets and
the relatively new Invertor range of gensets
meant the stock was completely sold out
within 2 days. Stock of the Yanmar YEG
range of silenced gensets were selling
quickly also with many models sold out.
After already purchasing a Yanmar
generator to power either their house,
business or farm, Nick was delighted
to hear from his customers wanting to
purchase another Yanmar generator. With 1
customer buying 4 for his businesses and
a farmer calling his neighbour over so he
could see firsthand just how quiet and fuel
efficient the Yanmar generators are.
The Yanmar YDG portable generators range
in output from 2.2kVA through to 4.6kVA in
both manual and electric start variants.
The Yanmar Invertor generator range
consists of 2 models at 7.5kVA and 11kVA,
both are electric start and contained in a
sound shield making them ideal for both
household and commercial use.
The Yanmar YEG range of generators starts
at 8.8kVA with many models through to
62kVA in silenced, Single phase and Three
phase versions.

YANMAR POWERS
FOR MARINE RES
FIRST DELIVERED TH
Two of the most formidable entities
in commercial boating have
combined once again to deliver
the latest vessel for Marine Rescue
NSW.
Yanmar and Steber International have
delivered the first of four new rescue vessels,
with unit number one headed to Batemans
Bay.
Designated by Marine Rescue NSW as
BM30, the boat will be on hand to patrol the
Bateman’s Bay region and perform rescue
work when called on by the boating public
or NSW Water Police. Batemans Bay on the
south coast of NSW is home to a large game
fishing group and an even bigger trailer boat
community.
BM30 is a Steber 38 built to stringent survey
specifications. While the limit of operations
for Marine Rescue NSW is 15nm offshore,
the Steber 38 is accredited for work 30nm
offshore.
The Steber 38 is an award winning hull
design. The hull is noted for its exceptional
sea going qualities and excellent handling
features such as high speed level planning,
excellent cornering, and dry soft riding and
with good all-round vision.
As a commercial boat supplied to Marine
Rescue NSW, the fit out specification has
been very specific yet utilitarian. When called
on to work in unkind sea conditions and
undertake dangerous work where there are
lives at stake, there can be no short cuts in
quality or equipment.
The cockpit is exceptionally functional
and can be sealed from the elements to
keep water and wind outside under the
6
Yanmar 6LY3-STP
most adverse of sea conditions. Naturally
the cockpit carries a plethora of radio
communication equipment, the best in
navigation gear plus some creature comforts
for the crew on board to endure long days
and nights at sea.
Throughout the boat, there are hand holds
everywhere. The aft cockpit is dominated
by a giant and secure towing post which
sits squarely amidships between two flush
mounted engine hatches.
It’s under the cockpit floor that the real heart
of the Steber lies. A pair of Yanmar 6LY3-STP
engines with Yanmar’s own KMH61A marine
transmissions is professionally installed in
true Stebercraft fashion which facilitates easy
maintenance and long life. The purpose built
marine engine design of the Yanmar 6LY3
engine series and their renowned low fuel
consumption are key factors behind their
success as a proven light duty commercial
engine. Low fuel consumption & servicing
costs along with high reliability are critical
factors not only when at sea undertaking a
lengthy search, but also to help contain the
operating costs of Marine Rescue NSW.
Yanmar’s 6LY3-STP engine is a
turbocharged, direct injected, intercooled, 24
valve, in-line 6 cylinder displacing 5.8 litres
to produce 440mhp(324kW) at 3300rpm.
Weighting in at only 718 kg complete with
Yanmar’s purpose built marine transmission,
the 6LY3-STP delivers industry leading
power-to-weight Yanmar diesel performance.
The Yanmar 6LY3 features a high-technology
electronic control system that governs all
engine operations from fuel management to
twin engine synchronisation, gear shifting and
diagnostics.
The intelligent electronic control system on
the 6LY3-STP manages the fuel delivery
system and injection timing of the high
pressure fuel pump to dramatically increase
torque, improve fuel economy, reduce noise
at idle and particularly reduce fuel odour and
white smoke at start up in cold conditions.

THREE ON THE WAY
Translated to on-water performance, the
twin Yanmar 6LY3-STP powered Steber
38 achieved a top speed of 32.6 knots at
WOT of 3357 RPM. Throttling back to a
more realistic cruise speed of 21.6 knots,
the Yanmars tick over at 2437 RPM with
fuel consumption recorded at 40.5 litres per
hour per engine. The boat is fitted with a
pair of 23” x 26.5” props.
selected as much for its proven capability
as much as it is also the vessel selected by
many other public organisations.
“The Steber and Yanmar brand is well
proven with organisations such as NSW
Maritime, NSW Water Police, NSW
Fisheries Patrol, Australian Customs and
the ADF,” Glenn Finniss said. “That gives us
great comfort.”
“But beyond that the Steber 38 is a well
proven commercial design with very strong
references. It is a proven and capable
platform for offshore heavy weather duties.”
“Having put BM30 through her sea trials
we are very happy with our choice and look
forward to receiving the remaining three
Yanmar powered Steber 38s soon.”
According to Glenn Finniss, Commissioner
of Marine Rescue NSW, the Steber 38 was

GORI WINS AGAIN
ON GLOBAL YACHTING SCENE
Gori Racing Series
The Barcelona World Race is
one of the best regarded two
handed ocean racing events in the
world. Staged for only the second
time in 2010/2011, the event is a
huge media event in Europe with
the 60 foot boats and 14 teams
commanding media attention more
commensurate with a F1 car racing
team, than ocean yachtsmen.
After 25,200 nm sailing around the world,
French duo of Jean-Pierre Dick (45) and
Loïck Peyron (51) crossed the finish line in
first position having been at sea on VirbacPaprec 3, for 93 days, 22 hours, 20 mins
and 36 seconds at an average speed of
11.18 knots.
Virbac-Paprec 3 like the majority of the
IMOCA OPEN 60´s have Gori racing
propellers fitted. Other teams using the
renowned Gori racing propeller in this years
Barcelona World Race were,”Foncia”, “Hugo
Boss”, “Mapfre”, “President”, “Renault”, “We
are Water”, “Groupe Bel”, “Veolia”,” Estrella
Damm”, “Spirit of Canada” and “Temenos”.
“Safran” winner of the 2010 IMOCA 60 World
Championship and “Veolia” winner of Route
du Rhu also specify Gori racing propellers.
While the performance of a propeller on
a racing yacht may at first seem obscure.
After all the prop is only used when moving in
and out of port or when pressed into action
during an emergency situation. Consider
however, that for the entire 25,200 nm, the
prop hangs under the hull of the boat, with
the potential to act more like a brake.
That’s where the racing series folding design
from Gori excels. The design and shape
of the propeller gives absolutely minimum
drag when folded. In fact its reputation of
being the world’s fastest sailboat propeller is
well known and fully documented by many
independent sources. Geared blades that
close together in a clam shape are used on
the Gori racing propeller. The geared blade
design ensures that under sail the blades
close simultaneously and stay closed when
under sail. Each Gori racing propeller is
tank tested before supply which ensures
a safe and reliable opening of the fully
closed propeller each time when required.
The folding propeller design will not snag
seaweed, lobster lines, plastic bags or other
underwater debris when sailing, something
which cannot be said about a feathering type
propeller design.
Typically the Gori prop used in boats like
Virbac-Paprec 3, have a diameter of 680mm
or 750mm being the Gori 680 Racing or Gori
Maxi racing.
The Barcelona World Race is a non-stop,
round-the-world yacht race for crews of two,
sailed on Open 60 IMOCA monohull boats.
Following the Clipper Route, it starts and
finishes in Barcelona.
The inaugural race, contested in 2007-2008
by nine boats, was won by Jean-Pierre Dick
and Damien Foxall on the boat Paprec-Virbac
2 in a time of 92 days. The second edition of
the race started on 31 December 2010, with
Jean-Pierre Dick on board Virbac-Paprec
3 crossing the finish line in Barcelona on
April 4th at 10.20am making Jean-Pierre
Dick and Gori Propeller a dual winner of this
prestigious event.

SE POWER
CHOOSES
JCB DIESELMAX
ENGINES
SE Power and Power Equipment
have had a long relationship
working together.
For many years now SE Power has used
Yanmar engines in their production of Diesel
Generating sets, Lighting Towers and
Pumping sets.
SE Power is well known throughout Australia
and overseas for manufacturing premium
quality products that are built to Australia’s
high standards.
To be able to continually provide a premium
build, obviously premium quality components
are a must.
That’s why SE Power is now using JCB
Dieselmax engines to provide the power for
their larger range of megapumps. Yanmar
engines are still being used in the smaller
sizes.
The first two larger pump sets have been built
using the JCB444IPU-NA diesel engine.
This is a four cylinder, 4.4 litre, water cooled
naturally aspirated diesel that delivers 81 H.P
at 2200 rpm. It is close couple to a Selwood
D200 eight inch de-watering pump that can
pump 165 litres per second at a 37.5 meter
of head. The fuel tank skid base has enough
fuel for a full 24 hours of operation. Custom
bases can be manufactured if longer running
time is required.
JCB 444IPU-NA
The pumps are built to suit BMA mine spec
and MDG15 electrical standards for Mines
Australia wide and especially NSW.
Megapumps can handle clean water, slurries,
slimes, solid laden liquids, sludge and crude
sewerage effectively and efficiently and have
been designed and built to suit any site, be it
on land or water.
SE Power have run extensive tests on
this combination of diesel and pump and
say they are very happy with the engines
performance, commenting that it is very
smooth and “sounds like it means business”.

YANMAR POWERS
AHEAD IN PNG
Milne Bay Province in
Papua New Guinea
is not usually an
area associated with
commercial boat
building, but Nako
Fisheries in the idyllic
location of Alotau is
showing how it is done.
Producing a range of coastal trading vessels
ideally suited to the PNG operational
environment, Nako Fisheries has been
successful in delivering many new vessels
into the ageing fleet.
Headed by Neil Stanton, Nako knew that
there is much more to building excellent
vessels than just the cheapest purchase
price and concentrated on building vessels
optimised for the harsh local operating
environment.
of only 12 litres per hour. All achieved with
Yanmar’s famed reliability and long service
life.
Nako Fisheries has now completed over
twenty plus Yanmar powered vessels as they
continue to operate successfully in the harsh
PNG environment due to excellent initial
design and build quality, the combination
of Nako Fisheries and Yanmar commercial
marine engines increasingly rules the waves
in Papua New Guinea.
Strong and straight forward design fitted out
with the best equipment for the job at hand
while operating in remote locations.
When it came to propulsion, Nako looked no
further than the range of Yanmar commercial
marine engines. The range of Yanmar
commercial marine engines are purpose
designed and built marine engines from
the ground up, not marinised variants of
diesel engines originally designed for other
applications,
Looking to capitalise on Yanmar’s inherent
strengths Nako opted for the Yanmar CH
series of naturally aspirated marine engines
available in both four (4CHE3) and six
(6CHE3) cylinder configurations rated at
78mhp and 115mhp respectively. Depending
upon ultimate vessel configuration, these
vessels typically have a heavy ship cruise of
8-9 knots while returning a miserly fuel burn

JCB DRIVES
CONCRETE PUMP
The Sydney based manufacturer of
concrete pumps, Transcrete, has
delivered its first unit powered by
the JCB 444 diesel engine. The
Transcrete Trojan Spraymaster
is busy working in the south
Queensland market spraying concrete
to form new swimming pools.
Transcrete and Power Equipment, the
authorised distributor for both JCB and
Yanmar diesel engines, have enjoyed a
long and happy supplier manufacturer/
relationship. Transcrete uses Yanmar diesel
engines for their small concrete pump
applications. But when bigger power was
needed, Transcrete sourced engines from an
alternative supplier.
“That all changed when Power Equipment
became the distributor for JCB diesel
engines,” said Ian Hay of Transcrete.
“The JCB 444 model engine takes over from
where the Yanmar power range finishes, so
it is a good fit for our bigger Transcrete truck
mounted pumps. The JCB brand is highly
regarded on worksites throughout Australia
so we have no hesitation in fitting it to our
Transcrete products.”
The Transcrete Trojan Spraymaster
comprises a Fuso Fighter 6 truck body with
flat tray. Behind the cabin is a compressor
and at the rear the JCB engine drives the
Transcrete pump.
According to the Transcrete engineers, the
JCB diesel engine is perfect engine for the
task. Not only does it deliver strong, reliable
power, but the direct drive off the flywheel
end of the engine ensures that the close
coupled hydraulic pump is both neat and
highly accessible.
Another winning feature of the JCB engine
is the low fuel consumption. In an industry
where operation is measured in hours per
day, six days a week, the fuel saving of
a half a litre of fuel saved per cubic meter
of concrete pumped, really adds up to a
significant amount of money at the end of a
year. This pump is designed to easily operate
for 8 hours a day and longer.
At the heart of the Transcrete Trojan
Spraymaster is the JCB DieselMax 444
engine. This is a 4-cylinder, 4.4 litre
powerhouse boasting 4 valves per cylinder
with high torque at low speeds. This engine
is rated at 89kW at 2200 rpm.
On the Transcrete Trojan Spraymaster the
JCB engine is housed in an open sided
housing. This ensures an easy flow of
air around the engine while allowing easy
access for service.
The actual concrete pump unit fitted to the
truck is a Transcrete design and is wholly
manufactured in Australia. Transcrete has
been manufacturing concrete pumps since
1968 and exports to the USA and other
markets throughout the world.
MASE GENERATOR – NOW YO
Ray Roberts Marine of Whangarei on the North Island of New Zealand are
typically the first point of call after many thousands of nautical miles for many
of the international cruising yachts reaching land fall in NZ. Their competent
team of trained specialists conveniently positioned at their Riverside Drive
Marina location can rebuild, repair, or service engines, transmissions, and
generators or replenish on board consumables and spare parts if required.
In addition to their extensive servicing
capabilities Ray Roberts Marine as an
authorized Yanmar / Mase dealer is
regularly called upon by owners of both
local and visiting yachts to provide both
new engine and generator solutions. They
have installed many generators over the
years but they admit this is the first time
they have installed one in the captain’s
quarters, something that was made
possible by the compact design and the
unique cooling system of the Mase IS3.5.
12
Karlton Hughes of Ray Roberts Marine
points out that after considering the
options available, locating the genset in
the captain’s quarters was an obvious
choice and one that has proven to be very
successful.
The overseas owner of the Custom 60’
steel schooner “St Michel” asked Ray
Roberts Marine to find a solution to his
reliance on invertors and to update the
existing engine driven freezer compressors
with modern more efficient AC units.
The engine room, despite the size was
already cramped with two propulsion
engines so they had to look elsewhere for
a location for the generator set. Thanks
to the compactness of the Mase IS3.5
and the sea water / air intercooler design
which allows the generator to function
perfectly independently from the ambient
temperature of the installed space Ray
Roberts Marine was able to install it
between the two berths in the aft cabin.
In addition to the aluminum sound shield
which is supplied as standard with this
model a new timber cover with a built in
chart locker was constructed including
a 50mm composite sound barrier within
the whole enclosure for additional sound
REDFLOW SPECIFIES YANMAR GEN SET
RedFlow, the Brisbane based
electrical storage system company,
has selected Yanmar’s eG100i
diesel inverter generator as the
key component in its remote area
domestic power units.
Already on trial in Victoria’s bushfire affected
regions, the new Yanmar powered system
from RedFlow is exceeding all expectations.
Additional RedFlow units have been built for
similar trial in remote ‘off-grid’ areas of New
Zealand.
Domestic demand in remote areas can
now be satisfied through the intelligent
application of solar and diesel power. While
there is nothing particularly new in the basic
solar/diesel concept, RedFlow has elevated
the function and efficiency of the system.
Households can enjoy free solar power,
but when domestic demand is in excess
this must be supplemented with Yanmar’s
diesel power. On sunny days solar power
may deliver all the power required by the
household. But in situations where the
demand for power is greater than that
which solar can supply, the Yanmar eG100i
diesel inverter generator automatically
starts and feeds power into the domestic
system. Similarly, on dull days and at
night, Yanmar’s diesel power may have to
generate all of the power required.
During a random test week conducted
in Victoria, the split between solar power
generated and diesel power generated
using the RedFlow system was 50/50.
On average the Yanmar eG100i diesel
inverter generator operated for 3.89 hours
per day with a diesel fuel consumption of
2.07 litres per hour or 8 litres per day.
According to Steve Hickey of RedFlow, the
RedFlow designed Zinc-Bromide batteries
used in the system have a life of up to 5
years, while the Yanmar eG100i is expected
to have a service life of up to 10 years.
RedFlow is an acknowledged world leader
in the supply, manufacture and design of
packaged electricity storage systems.
“This RedFlow system is dependable and
proven technology that eliminates the need
to be connected to the electrical grid,” said
Steve Hickey of RedFlow. “This is a fitand-forget system that has all the electrical
intelligence to operate on its own with little if
any interference.”
Yanmar eG100i Diesel Inverter
“RedFlow has selected the Yanmar eG100i
diesel inverter generator for its reliability and
proven quality. The inverter capability of the
Yanmar gen set is an essential attribute of
the system.”

YANMAR SHOOTS UP DAVEY PUMP
SUPPLIER RANKING
As a key supplier to Davey Water
Products, Power Equipment (the
Australian authorised Distributor of
Yanmar diesel engines) has received
a huge accolade from Davey being
ranked as Davey’s third best supplier.
Under Davey’s Supplier Performance
Evaluation program, Davey ranks the
performance of all suppliers. Factors
included in the rating process include
quality, delivery, cost and a rating by Davey’s
Account Manager. With many suppliers on
Davey’s books, achieving a top three rating is
a real accomplishment.
“This is a significant achievement for both
Davey and Power Equipment,” said Noel
Heritage of Power Equipment. “At Power
Equipment we are very conscientious when
it comes to customer relations. It is so
gratifying to see that our endeavours are
recognised with our customer, Davey Water
products.”
Yanmar diesel engines have been supplied
to Davey over an extended period. Currently
Davey sources two Yanmar engines, the air
cooled Yanmar L series and the multi cylinder
TNV series.
The Yanmar L Series engine is used for fire
fighting applications. Organisations such
as Queensland Fire Service, the Country
Fire Authority, farmers and small property
owners are all users of the Yanmar powered
Davey fire fighting pumps. Under heat and
extreme operating conditions, the Yanmar
diesel engine is more stable operationally and
capable of delivering high pressure pumping
performance.

The Yanmar TNV engine is coupled to
Davey’s ISO pump range. This application
is quite different in that the need is for volume
pumping capacity both on the land and in
industry. Whether in an irrigation or mining
application, the Yanmar TNV is required to
operate continuously for extended periods.
“The key to our elevation up the Davey
suppliers rating I put down to talking and
understanding between the both of us.
Through communication Davey better
understands our technical capability and
they have a better handle on our delivery
constraints.”
According to Mark Butterfield (Manager,
Projects Group) at Power Equipment the
business relationship between Davey and
Power Equipment is first rate.
“Our association with Davey is very strong
and we are already speaking to them about
supplying our larger output JCB Diesel Max
engines for the biggest Davey pumps.”
“We have worked ever more closely with the
people at Davey to better understand their
needs,” Mark Butterfield said.

POWER EQUIPMENT WINS
PLATINUM
‘BEST OF
THE BEST’
BUSINESS
AWARD
Power Equipment has won a
prestigious business award, being
declared the ‘Best Small Business
over the past 20 years’ at the Premier
Regional Business Awards.
Power Equipment is the authorised Oceania
and South Pacific Distributor for Yanmar,
and JCB diesel engines, Mase Generators
and Gori Propellers. The company recently
relocated from Scoresby to their own
purpose built premises at Lynbrook as a
result of strong and sustained growth.
Over the past twenty years the Greater
Dandenong Chamber of Commerce has
staged the Premier Regional Business
Awards. Power Equipment won the award for
Best Small Business in 1997.
“Since 1997 quite a bit has changed at
Power Equipment,” Allan Foster said.
“In fact, I’m not sure that we are small
business any longer!”
For the twenty year anniversary awards
night, the organisers hit upon the concept
of a “Best of the Best” theme. This involved
a thorough review of all award winners in
each category over the past twenty years,
and declaring one company as the best in
each category. The judging criteria included
factors such as honesty, integrity, expertise
and passion.
Power Equipment was first declared a finalist
at the awards, a strong accolade indeed. But
when the company name was read out at the
gala ball as the winner, the Power Equipment
group were justifiably ecstatic.
Company MD Allan Foster took to the
stage to accept the award and make an
acceptance speech.
“Over the past few years we have made
five acquisitions, grown our staff to over
100 employees and moved to bigger
premises. We have also expanded from
Yanmar distribution to also become the JCB
DieselMax distributor. And in addition to
our Australian market, we have added New
Zealand and the Pacific to our distribution
zone.”
Allan Foster also paid due tribute to the
people who worked in Australia and New
Zealand at Power Equipment.
“The company is the sum of its people, and
without excellent people we wouldn’t have
the opportunity of being here tonight,” Allan
said.
The Premier Regional Business Awards were
presented at a black tie function staged
at a packed Palladium Ballroom at Crown
Casino in Melbourne. As an indication
of the prestigious nature of the awards,
Aussie Disposals, Hygain Feeds and Jayco
Caravans were fellow award winners. And
special guest of honour at the awards night
was Australian of the Year 2011, Simon
McKeon, a born and bred Dandenong man.
