Dear colleagues!
This annual report from the MCI Study Programs “Nonprofit, Social and Healthcare Management”
(BA) and “International Health Care Management” (MA) offers a good overview on our activities of
the academic year 2010/2011.
First of all, I would like to use the occasion to thank everyone who contributed to this successful
year! Our students, who pursue their learning goals with great motivation and curiosity, our lecturers, who in many cases also support us outside the framework of lectures, and the employees from
different service departments at MCI, who have developed the professional atmosphere in providing detailed services necessary for a professional international university of applied sciences. Most
of all, I would also like to thank the team of the Study Programs for organizing, with a lot of energy,
highly qualitative and innovative activities in the past academic year.
One selective glance towards the upcoming academic year 2011/2012 shows that we have a very
diverse and intensive year ahead of us.






228 applicants have participated in the application rounds of both study programs to get
one of the 50 places available at the Bachelor’s- or one of the 30 places available at the
Master’s Program.
Two thirds of the bachelor students in the second year will be studying at one of our international partner universities for one semester during the next academic year.
With two of our partner universities, the University of Oslo and the Erasmus University Rotterdam, we are currently working on a joint degree program.
In March 2012 the “4th European Winter School” will take place in close cooperation with
the European Health Management Association.
Excursions to Strasbourg, Veneto, Trento, Vienna and Geneva give the students the opportunity to meet important decision makers in the nonprofit, social and healthcare sector.
In a new cooperation with the European Health Forum Gastein our Master students will
have the opportunity to work with health policy experts during the Forum 2011.
Thanks to all our students, partners, & colleagues, I am very much looking forward to the upcoming
activities in the academic year 2011/2012.

der
vorliegende
Jahresbericht
des
MCI
Studienbereichs
„Nonprofit-,
Sozial&
Gesundheitsmanagement“ (BA) und „International Health Care Management“ (MA) bietet einen
Einblick in die wesentlichen Aktivitäten des akademischen Jahres 2010/2011.
Danken möchte ich an dieser Stelle all jenen, die dieses Jahr gestaltet haben! Unseren
Studierenden, die mit großer Motivation und viel Neugier ihre Lernziele verfolgen, unseren
Lehrenden, die in vielen Fällen auch außerhalb der Lehrveranstaltungen begleitend und
unterstützend wirken, den Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeitern der unterschiedlichen Servicebereiche
des MCI, die wesentlich dazu beitragen, dass die Atmosphäre einer international ausgerichteten
Hochschule in allen Details erlebbar wird. Vor allem aber auch dem Team des Studienbereichs, das
mit viel Energie, Qualität und Innovationsfreude die Aktivitäten im vergangen Jahr verantwortet
hat.
Ein selektiver Blick voraus zeigt, dass auch 2011/2012 ein abwechslungsreiches und intensives Jahr
wird.






Für das Aufnahmeverfahren der beiden Studiengänge bewarben sich 228 Bewerberinnen
und Bewerber für 50 Plätze im Bachelor- und 30 Studienplätze im Masterstudiengang.
Zwei Drittel der Bachelorstudierenden im zweiten Studienjahr werden in diesem Jahr ein
Semester an einer unserer internationalen Partnerhochschulen verbringen.
Mit unseren zwei Partnerhochschulen, der Universität Oslo und der Erasmus Universität
Rotterdam arbeiten wir derzeit am gemeinsamen joint degree Program „European Master
on Health Management“.
Im März 2012 findet die „4. European Winter School“ in enger Zusammenarbeit mit der
European Health Management Association statt.
Exkursionen nach Strasbourg, Veneto, Trento, Wien und Genf bringen die Studierenden in
engen Kontakt mit Entscheidungsverantwortlichen des Nonprofit-, Sozial- und
Gesundheitswesens.
In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Europäischen Gesundheitsforum Gastein haben unsere
Masterstudierenden während des Forums 2011 die Möglichkeit mit hochrangigen
Gesundheitsexperten/-innen zu kooperieren.
Ich bedanke mich recht herzlich bei allen Studierenden, Partnern/-innen und Kollegen/-innen und in
diesem Sinne freue ich mich auf die anstehenden Aktivitäten 2011/2012.

Wie auch in den Vorjahren setzt sich die Bewerber/-innenstruktur zu fast je einem Drittel aus
Bewerbern/-innen aus Tirol, aus anderen Bundesländern und aus dem Ausland zusammen. Auch in
der Herkunftsstruktur der Studienanfänger/-innen findet sich eine ähnliche Verteilung wieder.

Betrachtet man die Verteilung zwischen männlichen und weiblichen Bewerber/-innen, kann vom
Jahr 2008 auf das Studienjahr 2009 ein leichter Anstieg des Anteils der männlichen Bewerber von
19% auf 21% verzeichnet werden.
1.2
LEHRENDE
Der Bachelor-Studiengang „Nonprofit-, Sozial- & Gesundheitsmanagement“ zielt auf die
Ausbildung von Akademikern/-innen für qualifizierte Positionen im Nonprofitsektor, insbesondere
im Gesundheits- und Sozialbereich ab.
Im Fokus des Studiums steht daher eine theoretisch-fundierte, praxisorientierte Ausbildung, die
sich speziell durch die Verknüpfung von fachlichen Aspekten des Nonprofit-, Sozial- und
Gesundheitssektors mit politisch-ökonomischen, rechtlichen sowie betriebswirtschaftlichen
Inhalten auszeichnet. Ergänzt um die Vermittlung extrafunktionaler Kompetenzen (sozialkommunikative sowie wissenschaftlich-methodische Kompetenzen) gelingt es den Absolventen/innen, die aktuellen und zukünftigen Herausforderungen entlang der beruflichen Tätigkeitsfelder zu
bewältigen. Sie erwerben so im Zuge des Studiums die Fähigkeit, auf Basis wirtschaftlich relevanter
Daten Entscheidungen im Nonprofit-, Sozial- und Gesundheitssektor zu treffen, diese entsprechend
zu kommunizieren und effizient und effektiv zu verwirklichen.

Die Studierenden des Jahrgangs 2010 wurden im zweiten Semester im Zuge der
Lehrveranstaltungen „Wissenschaftliches Arbeiten und Integrative Projekte I“ und „Quantitative

EXKURSIONEN UND VERANSTALTUNGEN
Regional- und Standortmanagement SS 2011
Im Sommersemester 2011 besuchte Dr. Arno Weber im Zuge der Lehrveranstaltung „Regional- und
Standortmanagement“ mit den Studierenden des 4. Semesters Organisationen des Nonprofit-,
Sozial- und Gesundheitswesens um vor Ort mit Entscheidungsträgern über Standortstrategien zu
diskutieren.
Für die Diskussionen mit den Studierenden stellten sich die folgenden Persönlichkeiten zur
Verfügung:

Study trip to Leeds
In September 2010 Bachelor’s students spent two weeks at the University Leeds, where they were
introduced to the UK NHS system. Side visits to different organizations provided opportunities to
meet with people who work in social, health and not-for-profit organisations. That way, the
students could develop further their business English, through group activities and presentations.

Podiumsveranstaltung zum Thema „Integrierte Versorgung im Bereich der Altenpflege“
Der Studiengang “Nonprofit-, Sozial- und Gesundheitsmanagement” freute sich darüber, im
Oktober 2010 eine hochkarätige Podiumsrunde am MCI begrüßen zu dürfen. Mit Peter Gohm

(ehem. GF der Humanocare Management-Consult GmbH), Dir. Dkfm. Heinz Öhler (Tiroler
Gebietskrankenkasse), Dir. Winfried Pinggera (PVA) und Dr. Johann Wiedemair (Amt der Tiroler
Landesregierung) diskutierten die Studierenden über das Thema „Integrierte Versorgung im
Bereich der Altenpflege“.
Anlass für die Diskussionsrunde war ein Planspiel, in welchem die Bachelorstudierenden des 3.
Semesters die Übertragbarkeit von Vorzeigebeispielen der integrierten Versorgung in der
Altenpflege auf Tiroler Gemeinden am Beispiel „Zirl“ testeten.

Studienreise zum Haus Sebastian der Diakonie Rosenheim
Dipl.-Soz.-Päd. Klaus Voss, Geschäftsbereichsleitung Soziale Dienste des Diakonischen Werks
Rosenheim, lud eine Studierendengruppe des MCI im Februar 2011 ins Haus Sebastian, eine
Einrichtung der Diakonie Rosenheim. Die soziotherapeutischen Facheinrichtungen des Haus
Sebastian bestehen aus einem Übergangs- und einem Langzeitangebot. Sie bieten Frauen und
Männern mit einer chronischen Alkoholabhängigkeit und einer gleichzeitigen psychischen
Erkrankung (einer so genannten Doppeldiagnose) die Möglichkeit, ihr Leben ohne Alkohol zu
gestalten.
Die Studierenden wurden herzlich von der Belegschaft des Hauses begrüßt und hatten die
Gelegenheit nicht nur von Klaus Voss, sondern auch von dem Vorstandsvorsitzendem des
Diakonischen Werks Rosenheim, Peter Selensky, einiges über die Arbeit des Diakonischen Werks zu
erfahren.

Armut in Tirol
Am Josefi-Tag 2011 betonten der Bischof der Diözese Innsbruck, die Arbeiterkammer, der ÖGB Tirol
und der KAB Tirol in einer gemeinsam Erklärung, dass Armut auch in Tirol jeden treffen kann und

Adventure X & Sonderpreis für Nonprofit Projekte mit Unterstützung MCI
Der Businessplanwettbewerb „adventure X“ wird von der Standortagentur Tirol und dem
Gründungszentrum CAST veranstaltet, um Personen zu unterstützen, die eine Idee oder ein
Forschungsergebnis haben und darüber nachdenken, eine Firma zu gründen bzw. eine bestehende
Firma zu erweitern.“adventure X“ bietet während der sechsmonatigen Laufzeit Know-how und Dohow an und wendet sich auch an bereits bestehende Unternehmen, die beispielsweise für die
Erschließung eines neuen Geschäftszweiges einen Businessplan erstellen möchten.
Der Studiengang unterstüzt adventure x beim Aufbau eines neuen Sonderpreises für eingereichte
Nonprofit Businesspläne.
Zu den 10 Besten gehörte heuer auch das Team der NSGM Studierenden, die unter dem
Projektname „ChupChup“, welches durch die Produktion und den Verkauf von Mützen Gelder für
die Organisation antraten, MyLife in Cape Town/Südafrika lukriert.

Über 1.000 Festgäste, darunter zahlreiche Spitzenvertreter aus Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft und
Verwaltung würdigten den Erfolg der Studierenden und ihrer Hochschule. Zu den Festrednern

Master students of the MCI study program “International Health Care Management”, coming from
various countries, had the great opportunity to get to know more about International Health Care
Organizations as global players, the Italian Health Care System and crossborder health care services during study tours to Geneva and Venice.
Siegfried Walch, head of the study program: “These two study tours underline the efforts in the positioning of the program, its international dimension and the diversity of teaching methods. They
are an essential part of the curriculum. Initiatives like these have led to the result that the master in
“International Health Care Management” is the very first program which has been awarded the
joint FIBAA and EHMA (European Health Management Association) accreditation.” But what do the
students themselves think about this?

In Switzerland the international Master students and their lecturers Natascha Zeitel-Bank und Renate Windbichler visited the most important international organizations headquarters like Doctors
Without Borders, International Red Cross, Global Fund, UNAIDS, the World Health Organization and
the World Trade Organization. Experts reported from their experiences on the world continents.
Where should the fight against illnesses like Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria start? How can you
create an efficient health care knowledge among the population in Eastern Europe? What does it
mean to manage international health care projects in South America? How can you handle donations in crisis areas in an effective way? And of course: What kind of requirements must students
fulfill to become a part of this global network?
“The Geneva excursion allowed me as a student to go beyond the general information provided on
such organizations’ websites and pamphlets into the details of the organizations and their working

Venice
In the pitoresque environment of Venice the future health care managers and their lecturer Hermann Sinz listened to presentations about the regional health care system of the Veneto region ,
the integration of health care services in current structures, the role of e-health and telemedicine for
improving patient procurement and crossborder education in the health care sector. Two other
highlights were the visit of the European WHO office and the boat trip to San Servolo, known as the
“Island of the Mad“, which has been for 250 years the official mental asylum of Venice and is now a
visit worth museum.

Vienna
MCI Master’s students in the “International Health Care Management” program participated in a
two-day excursion to Vienna from March 21st to March 22nd 2011 which was part of the course
“Praxis Laboratory - Encounters with the health sector”. This excursion, accompanied by program
organizers Hermann Sinz and Siegfried Walch, was meant to help students gain practical insights
into the health care sector and included visits to major government and health care organizations,
including Aids Hilfe, Lohmann and Rauscher, Gesundheit Oesterrich (OeBIG), the Federal Security
Academy (SIAK), the Vienna General Hospital (AKH), and Pharmig.

their activities, challenges, future perspective and most of all gave us the opportunity to discuss

2.3.4
Strasbourg
During the summer term 2011 the study program ‘International Health Care Management’ was running an interdisciplinary semester-long project on good governance (in healthcare).
The students devoted themselves to this topic where they simulated that their virtual city “Bridge
Inn” applied for the label ‘ELoGE’ (European Label of Governance Excellence) conferred by the
Council of Europe.
The Council’s ‘Strategy for Innovation and Good Governance at Local Level’ comprises 12 principles, which aim to direct local government institutions to develop or maintain a high standard of
democratic governance. To award the well-performing local entities appropriately, the Council confers the label ‘ELoGE’ to cities and communes who have implemented the principles in all levels of
their administration.
At the project start in January 2011 the students were invited to Strasbourg in order to get a first
glance into the structures of the Council of Europe.
After a visit of the Council’s Court of Human Rights on the first day the students were welcomed at
the Palais by Susanne Caarls, program manager, Alfonso Zardi, Head of the Department of Local
and Regional Democracy and Good Governance and Dan Popescu, Head of the Centre of Expertise
for Local Government Reform. Their motivating speeches inspired the students when it came to the
first ‘simulation’ in the council’s conference room, the kick-off of the project ‘Bridge Inn applies for
ELoGE’.

only to get to know more about the ‚Council of Europe‘ but to also be able to attend a vote of the
European Parliament. Furthermore the students got the opportunity to direct their questions on the
parliaments work, especially with regards to healthcare to the Members of Parliament Dr. Richard
Seeber and Dr. Thomas Ullmer.

3.1.1

THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE HAS CONFIDENCE IN ITS COOPERATION WITH THE MANAGEMENT
CENTER INNSBRUCK
MCI-students’ project for the city of Innsbruck highly appreciated by Strasbourg
Students of the Management Center Innsbruck have succeeded in creating a link between “Good
Governance” and “Health in All Policies” in an extraordinary project. Results were recently presented to the project partners, the city of Innsbruck and the Council of Europe.
"The Council of Europe welcomes MCI’s efforts in promoting good governance and the European
Label of Governance Excellence. I hope your Bridge Inn project will inspire other institutions in Austria and abroad to embrace the European Strategy on Innovation and Good Governance and its 12
principles” said Sylvia Ivanova from the Directorate of Democratic Institutions of the Council of Europe before handing Andreas Altmann and Siegfried Walch from the MCI an honorary crystal dodecahedron engraved with the 12 European Principles (the "Dodie") acknowledging their support to
the project.
The concept of social determinants of health promotes the inclusion of the subject “health“ in all
policies. The link between health and excellent governance can, therefore, be a possible way to improve the quality of life of local, regional or national citizens.
Students of the MCI-master’s program “International Health Care Management” devoted themselves to this topic where they simulated that their virtual city “Bridge Inn” applied for the label
“ELoGE” (European Label of Governance Excellence) conferred by the Council of Europe. In reality
this label is conferred to local authorities that achieve a high overall level of governance measured
by the Twelve European Principles of Good Democratic Governance such as transparency, effectiveness, sustainability or ethical conduct. The simulation focused primarily on the integration of
“health” into the local government’s work.
The presentation of the results to the project partner, the city of Innsbruck took place on May, 24 in
the city hall. According to the students’ report the city authorities of Innsbruck being the basis of the
simulation perform very well in the measurement of the 12 European Principles. Under the slogan
„nobody is perfect“ there was also room for further suggestions and exchange of ideas with civil
servants and Sylvia Ivanova from the Directorate of Democratic Institutions of the Council of Europe. The highlight of the event was the symbolic handing over of the honorary crystal dodecahedron by Sylvia Ivanova to the MCI and the ensuing celebration of all students, lecturers and project
partners of the city of Innsbruck.

3rd European Winter School für Führungskräfte im Gesundheitswesen
Die hochkarätige Winterschool des Management Center Innsbruck (MCI) und der European Health
Management Association (EHMA) fand im März 2011 zum dritten Mal in Innsbruck statt. Dr.
Siegfried Walch, Leiter der MCI Studiengänge „Nonprofit- und Gesundheitsmanagement“ und Jeni
Bremner, Direktorin der EHMA eröffneten die von Liz de Wet, Südafrika und Myron Rogers, Chicago
geleitete Veranstaltung. Die Teilnehmenden kamen für die dreitägige Veranstaltung aus insgesamt
10 Staaten Europas sowie aus den USA, Afrika und Asien nach Innsbruck.
Mit Fragen der Integration und Koordination von Gesundheitsdienstleistungen richtete sich die
Veranstaltung an internationale Führungskräfte aus den Bereichen Gesundheitsmanagement und politik. Vorträge und Erfahrungsaustausch international renommierter Experten/-innen, Exkursionen
zu einem Tiroler Sozial- und Gesundheitssprengel sowie zum Gesundheitszentrum Lanserhof
standen auf dem Programm und regten die Diskussionen der Teilnehmer/-innen an. Die Arbeit an
Lösungen für die steigende Anzahl an chronischen Erkrankungen, die Alterung der Gesellschaft und
eine generelle Notwendigkeit, vorhandene Ressourcen gezielt einzusetzen, unterstreichen die
Bedeutung des Erfahrungsaustausches.
Im Zuge der Workshops wurden außerdem erste Ergebnisse einer MCI-Studie zu globalen
Herausforderung im Gesundheitsmanagement präsentiert. Die Ergebnisse werden für die
Weiterentwicklung von Ausbildungsmöglichkeiten im Gesundheitsbereich am MCI sowie für den
Aufbau internationaler Fortbildungsprogramme genutzt.

3.1.3
MCI trainiert Führungskräfte im Ägyptischen Gesundheitswesen
Als im Sommer 2010 der Auftrag zur Durchführung eines Zertifikatskurses „Finanzielle Transparenz
in Organisationen des Gesundheitswesens“ vom Entwicklungsprogramm der UNO (UNDP) und
dem ägyptischen UNDP-Zentrum für Transparenz erteilt wurde, waren die Ereignisse vom 25.
Jänner 2011 und die Revolution der folgenden Wochen noch nicht in Sicht. Im weiteren Verlauf

bescherten die Ereignisse des Arabischen Frühlings dem Kurs eine unerwartet große
Aufmerksamkeit.
Mit dem richtigen Thema, zur richtigen Zeit am richtigen Ort, fasst MCI-Studiengangsleiter Siegfried
Walch das nun abgeschlossene Projekt knapp zusammen. 145 Bewerber/-innen hatten sich für ein
von den Niederlanden finanziertes UNDP-Stipendium und den 10tägigen Kurs beworben. Das
Auswahlverfahren und die Durchführung des Zertifikatskurses hat der in Kairo lebende MCIGastprofessor Mostafa Hunter koordiniert.
28 Teilnehmer/-innen aus öffentlichen und privaten Einrichtungen des Gesundheitssektors wurden
in einem umfassenden Auswahlverfahren zur Teilnahme zugelassen. 25 haben das
Abschlusszertifikat erworben, davon 12 Frauen und 13 Männer. Der jüngste Absolvent ist ein
27jähriger Arzt, der älteste Teilnehmer ein 55jähriger Generaldirektor eines Universitätsspitals. Die
Urkunden wurden im Rahmen eines feierlichen Festaktes in Anwesenheit des Gesandten der
Österreichischen Botschaft in Kairo, Clemens Mantl sowie dem Vertreter der österreichischen
Handelsdelegation in Kairo, Stephan Spazier, überreicht.
Stellvertretend für die Teilnehmer/-innen erzählt der Manager Ahmed Morsy: „Ich habe inhaltlich
viel profitiert. Vor allem auch den Lehr- und Arbeitsstil sowie das Management des Kurses habe ich
schätzen gelernt.“
MCI-Gastprofessor Mostafa Hunter: „Die Thematisierung von Transparenz und guter
Regierungsführung im Gesundheitswesen ist mir ein zentrales Anliegen und für die weitere
Entwicklung meines Landes von großer Bedeutung.“ Dazu haben er und die Kursteilnehmer/-innen
auch einen Verein (www.hegta.org) gegründet, dessen zentrale Aufgabe es sein wird, das Thema
Transparenz im Gesundheitswesen Ägyptens voranzubringen.

“Rising Star of Corporate Governance“ an Dr. Mostafa Hunter
28.07.2011. "A Rising Star of Corporate Governance" - diese hohe Auszeichnung der renommierten
Yale School of Management in New Haven, Connecticut, würdigt jährlich junge Führungskräfte, die
Corporate Governance bei ihrem jeweiligen Arbeitgeber in besonderer Weise fördern.
Dr. Mostafa Hunter ist seit 2009 Visiting Professor am MCI, lebt in Österreich, Deutschland und
Kairo und hat dort in Zusammenarbeit mit dem MCI und mit Unterstützung des United Nations
Development Programs (UNDP) eine international beachtete Initiative für gute Regierungsführung
und gegen Korruption im Gesundheitswesen gestartet.
Als wichtigste Maßnahme wurde von Dezember 2010 bis Mai 2011 eine einschlägige Seminarreihe
durchgeführt, die enormes Feedback hervorgerufen hat. Weitere Projekte in der Region sind
geplant, wobei vor allem die Zusammenarbeit mit Universitäten in Ägypten gesucht werden soll.
Der Governance-Preis wurde 2011 zum vierten Mal an junge Führungskräfte verliehen und ging an
Kandidaten/-innen aus vier Kontinenten. Diese wurden aufgrund Ihres Engagements und ihrer
Reputation ausgewählt; aber auch, weil die Jury in Ihnen "großes Potential sieht, die Zukunft ihrer
Branche maßgeblich zu beeinflussen".

Veronique Bos, IHCM 2009 student wins case competition in Ljubljana
At the first regional BioCamp Alpe-Adria, which was held by Lek, a Sandoz company, from May 29
to 31, 2011 in Ljubljana with 35 of the most promising young science students from the Alpe-Adria
region, the individual winners of the competition section of the three-day forum are Véronique Bos
from Netherlands, who is studying at the Management Center Innsbruck in Austria, and Klemen
Španinger from Slovenia, who is a phd student of biomedicine at the Faculty of Medicine in
Ljubljana. The members of the winning team received a special prize for their work, while the individual winners will participate in the Novartis International Biotechnology Leadership Campus (BioCamp) 2011 in Basel, Switzerland.

Great success in the Healthcare Case Competition
30th & 31st May 2011
Students of the MCI Master Program in International Health Care Management reach the final of the
Compete for Healthcare Case Competition in Milan.
At the end of May 2011 the renowned Bocconi University in Milan, Italy hosted the international
case study competition known as "Compete for Health Care" for the first time. During this two-day
event students were given the task to develop a national strategy for Italy for an international
pharmaceutical company and to present this strategy to a high-ranking judging panel. The international field of participants consisted of teams from various universities, e.g. Erasmus University
Rotterdam, the China Europe International Business School in Shanghai, the U.S. Auburn University and the Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge.
The MCI team, with students Natalie Eiffler, Cherisse Mark, Ayman Sabae, Martin Thaler & Syed
Zohaib along with their supervisor Dr. Anton Petter, gave an outstanding performance, presented
an excellent and innovative strategy, reached the final, and in the end had to throw in the towel only against the winning team of Bocconi School of Management.

The 2011 EHMA Annual Conference has been an opportunity to share experiences, learn from and
listen to experts about the topic Integration. Integration is the buzzword in health and healthcare.

The department’s R&D activities are focused, business-related and solution-oriented and serve to
build up competence. Currently we are combining education within 10-20 practical projects per
year. In addition, about 60 students write their thesis in the field of Nonprofit-, Social- & Healthcare
Management. Their supervision and all the other projects are a rich source of know-how which contributes to the further development of applied research activities and additional income streams.

8.1
IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW CURRICULA AND FURTHER PROGRAM
DEVELOPMENT
Our main focus during the upcoming academic year will be put on the implementation of new curricula in both of our programs. The 2010 reaccredited bachelor program with its new module structure and module exams goes now into its second year. The new curriculum of the master’s program is already a result of our close cooperation with the University of Oslo and Erasmus University Rotterdam (future joint degree) and starts 2011 into its first year. To continue and further develop
the close cooperation between faculty members in the single modules will have a high priority in
our work and will be strongly supported and encouraged by the department.
Secondly we are in the initial phase of a new program. The idea is to develop a second master’s
program with a focus on Social Affairs and Nonprofit Management. Together with our advisory
board, partners from both practice and academia we will discuss and shape the curriculum during
the coming months.
Thirdly in 2012 MCI intends to offer an executive master’s program on Health and Hospital Management together with BMC, Jeddah. BMC, the Batterjee Medical College for Sciences and Technology was founded in 2005. BMC offers Bachelor's degrees in various medical fields and holds approvals from the Ministry of Higher Education in Saudi Arabia. Part of BMC is the Department of
Health Care Administration which awards a bachelor’s degree in specialties related to the
healthcare industry including Management of Healthcare, Economics & Finance of Healthcare as
well as Accounting of Healthcare.

COOPERATION WITH THE EUROPEAN HEALTH MANAGEMENT
ASSOCIATION
4th European winter school on health leadership, 29 February - 2 March 2012
Topic: Managing and Leading Healthcare in Practice - Private Sector in Public Healthcare: Navigating the Risks and Opportunities
Many health systems across Europe are altering the role of the private sector in public healthcare,
for example through contracting with private providers and using private finance initiatives. At a
time when systems are looking for ways to control costs and increase quality, it is often argued that
private sector involvement is an important lever for change. But is this right, and how can health
leaders and managers navigate the changing healthcare environment to deliver the best care possible for patients?
The 2012 Winter School will be an opportunity to explore these questions, and particularly how to
lead and manage through times of change. The winterschool is an opportunity for health experts to
join and to build an international peer network.

Myron Rogers is an author and consultant with a global practice in large-scale organization change
and leadership development. A skilled translator of systems science for the challenges of today’s
organizations, he has led engagements across all sectors, from the Fortune 500, to governments,
healthcare, the military, public education, and not-for-profits over the past 30 years. He co-authored
the best-selling A Simpler Way (Berrett-Koehler) with Margaret Wheatley, and his work has appeared in edited books and journals. He was a co-founder of the Berkana Institute, and has been
named a global thought leader by the Drucker Foundation and the Fetzer Institute.
Liz de Wet, Learning Practitioner, Cape Town
Liz de Wet is an organizational and executive education specialist. She has worked in the field of
organizational learning as a learning practitioner since 1993. Her clients range from large corporate
businesses to community-based organizations, throughout South Africa as well as internationally.
Since 2004, she has been working in partnership with the UCT Graduate School of Business where
she has been responsible for the design and delivery of customized executive education interventions. In addition to this partnership, Liz maintains an independent client base.

JOINT DEGREE WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF OSLO AND THE ERASMUS
UNIVERSITY ROTTERDAM
The three partner universities have agreed on the key elements for a joint master’s program which
will offer excellent international students the opportunity to develop an advanced multidisciplinary
perspective on contemporary policy issues in health care systems around the world so that they
can become leading creators (analysis) and users (leadership) of health policy decision-making information. The curriculum development shall be finalized during the next year.
Here is short information on the two partner institutions with which we will form the core of the
joint degree program.
Erasmus University Rotterdam – the first university in the Netherlands named after a person, a man
to whom Rotterdam owes the reputation it has held for centuries in the academic world, Desiderius
Erasmus. The university pursues knowledge in an inquiring, critical, investigative and flexible manner, with a strong international orientation and based on the values of professionalism, teamwork
and fair play. The “Instituut Beleid & Management Gezondheidszorg” (BMG) or “Institut of Health
Policy & Management” runs the Bachelor of Health Sciences course and two adjoining Masters

The University of Oslo is a leading European university and Norway's largest. UiO is home to outstanding research and offers a great variety in study options. Currently the university has about

MCI GOES EUROPEAN HEALTH FORUM GASTEIN (EHFG)
The EHFG is the leading health policy conference in Europe. The main objective is to facilitate the
establishment of a framework for advising and developing European health policy while recognizing the principle of subsidiarity. In a new cooperation with the European Health Forum Gastein our
master students will have the opportunity to meet and work with health policy experts during the
forum 2011.
MCI students will do the reports on the sessions and will publish their impressions on several webblogs. The written summary of the different sessions will be included in EHFG publications with the
aim to provide full background documentation and to inform decision makers about what has been
achieved during the discussions in Gastein. The student’s written reports will also be used for press
releases, conference proceedings and the Gastein Health Declaration.

COOPERATION WITH THE HEALTHCARE GOVERNANCE AND
TRANSPARENCY ASSOCIATION (HEGTA), CAIRO
HeGTA is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization, founded by a diversified group of professionals, sharing the Egyptian vision, that promoting governance and transparency will have substantial positive impact on enabling healthcare reform and creating investment opportunities in the
Egyptian healthcare sector.
In April 2012 the Healthcare Governance and Transparency Association (HeGTA) will run a Health
Finance Investment Forum in Cairo, Egypt. This forum brings experts with both the scientific as well
as the practical experience related to finance and investment in healthcare. It also offers a unique
opportunity for networking and B2B in a multi-sector environment including representatives from
the healthcare sector, finance and investment community and the tourism industry.
