These classic white changing huts have been on the beaches since the early 20th century. The present-day beach huts are built according to old drawings, and the holiday-makers can enjoy some 20 bathing huts positioned on different beaches. Hanko has got a long tradition of spa life. As early as five years after the town was founded the Hanko Spa was established (1879–1939). Over time the Spa Park was built with its characteristic villas, still there today. Spa guests came here to be cured with health baths and water treatments in the spa building. In the 1920s and the 1930s sun bathing on the beaches was taking over, and the health baths in the spa establishment decreased. After the Winter War in 1940 the spa was not reestablished, so today it’s all about bathing in the sea. Did you know that the society Pro Hanko rented out ten bathing huts to the town people in 1919. Adults paid one Mark for the hut, children paid 50 Pennies (Mark and Penni was the Finnish currency at the time). 8 HANKO HANKO 9 In Hanko you can find a number of cosy shops where you can buy locally produced items as well as well known brands. THE BATTLE OF GANGUT – a turning point in history It is the 27th of July 1714. It is a still, wonderful high summer’s day, and everything seems calm, but this will change within a few hours. Sweden has been at war with Russia, Denmark and Saxony for fourteen years and last summer the Russians conquered southern Finland, led by Czar Peter. However, the Swedes still rule the sea. Czar Peter was very interested in seafaring and he was present in Hanko himself. He came from Tallin, to Tvärminne via Porkala on the 19.7. to observe the Swedes. Whenever Peter investigated where the galleys could be pulled over, he had a large Cyrillic P carved into a rock or stone. During the battle itself Peter watched from the beach. Part of the Swedish naval fleet was positioned outside Hanko when the Russians, led by Peter, tried to get around the cape. The Russians tried to pull their galleys over the Hanko cape, but failed. Most of the Swedish fleet was at sea and could not get close enough because of the calm weather. The Russians managed to row around the Hanko peninsula with 90 galleys, but found themselves facing a guard of only seven Swedish ships. The Swedes, however, had more fire power. The battle began around 3 p.m. and lasted for three hours. The Swedes were led by Vice Admiral Nils Ehrenskiöld. The Russian fleet was led by General Admiral Fyodor Matveevitsch Apraxin. It was a bloody battle, and about a thousand soldiers lost their lives. The Swedes lost the battle, and this was the Russians’ first victory over the Swedes at sea. The symbolic value was very high, and 27.7. became the Day of the Russian Navy, and to this day there is a ship named Gangut in their fleet, which is the Russian name for Hanko. Czar Peter was made Vice Admiral after the battle, and he organized a great victory parade on the Neva. Until the Great Nordic War (1700–1721) and the Great Hate (1713–1721), Finland had been an integral part of Sweden, but during the 1700s when Russia became a world power some Finns looked towards Russia. There changes led to Finland becoming a part of Russia in 1809 until finally becoming independent in 1917. Hanko Museum’s summer exhibition GANGUT FESTIVAL IN HANKO 25–27.7 Rilax - Riilahti - Gangut 1714, 300 years since the Battle of Rilax is about the actual battle as well as about the future ruler Peter the Great and Charles XII of Sweden, who was in Turkey at the time. In the exhibition you can also learn about the Great Nordic War, the lives of ordinary soldiers and what impact the battle had on Finnish history. The items are from museums in Finland, Sweden and Russia. From Sweden is a sloop, among other things, which Peter the Great built in Holland, and which is a war-trophy from Narva. I became a true fan of Hanko and asked loads of questions of everybody.
