Make your
fundraiser
an EPIC
experience
Spread the word..
Once you have decided what you
are going to do DON’T FORGET
TO TELL EVERYONE so they can
help you raise money to support
local people affected by cancer
or other life limiting illness.
Here’s how we can support you
in getting your event noticed:
• Eyecatching materials and
ARHC branded merchandise
• Templates for posters and
flyers
• Balloons & banners
• We even have a press
release template to help you
get your event noticed and
publicised by the local media
- newspapers, radio and don’t
forget your local community
magazine.
• We can also feature your
event on the ARHC website
and in the newsletter (time
permitting).
• REMEMBER TO: Make the
most of the internet and
email, and don’t forget
social networking sites such
as Facebook, Twitter and
Linked-In; they’re excellent
for spreading the word
about an event to friends
and friends of friends.
• Have a think about sending a
blanket email out to family,
friends and work colleagues
about your fundraiser.
• If you’ve got the time, send
out individual emails to
people you know and ask
them to sponsor you and
attend your event.
Max the Cash
To help get the cash flowing
in, we recommend you contact
us and ask for one of our
sponsorship forms.
So, really encourage your family,
friends and colleagues to beef
up all of their sponsorship
money by adding Gift Aid to it.
Also, think about setting up a
personalised Just Giving page
at www.justgiving.com. It’s a
really easy way for people to
sponsor you and add Gift Aid to
their sponsorship.
Once you have collected your
money, then contact the
Fundraising Office so they can
help get your money working.
Gift Aid - What’s so good about
it? Well, for every £1 people
sponsor you, we can claim
an extra 25p back from the
Government.
Remember that the quicker you
pay your sponsorship money
in, the quicker it can fund vital
services and the quicker we can
send you a big thank you letter
telling you and others what
amazing work you have done.
Keep it legal and safe!
We want your fundraiser to be one to remember – for all the right
reasons! So, please read the important information below.
Your fundraising really does make a difference
“Without you we couldn’t help all
the patients and families that we
do. Thank you.”
Health and Safety Food hygiene
It’s all about common sense.
Follow the professional advice of
equipment manufacturers and
staff supervising any facilities.
ARHC cannot accept liability
for any loss, damage or injury
suffered by you or anyone else,
as a result of taking part in a
fundraising event.
Data Protection
Make sure any electronic or
paper record you keep about
people involved in a fundraising
event complies with the Data
Protection Act.
As a rule of thumb, don’t keep
information about people any
longer than you have to, and
don’t share information or data
about someone without their
permission.
No one likes a poorly tummy!
“ All your efforts are really
appreciated.”
Please take great care when
handling food and work to
basic rules for safe preparation,
storage, display and cooking.
Raffles and lotteries
There are strict and complex laws
relating to raffles and lotteries.
There are also legal requirements
regarding prizes, the costs of
running a raffle or lottery and the
way they are organised. Get in
contact with your local authority
before holding one of these
events and before you spend
money on getting tickets printed.
Believe it or not, some events
you might not think of as
lotteries, such as duck or
balloon races, are covered by
lottery laws.
“Thank you for the most
extraordinary support”
“Everyone says “if there is anything I can do to help just ask.”
“
You took the weight off our shoulders and
made the worry disappear.”
“ It really lifts your spirits
to come here.”
“They don’t just look
after Dad, they’’re here
for us as well”
“The care that your
fundraising enables us to
deliver is exceptional.”
Ready, 1
Now you have read the important
stuff, here are some top ideas to
get you on your fundraising way.
STEADY,
Something to get
your teeth into
The BIG CAKE BREAK. Why not
hold a coffee morning, or tea
party in aid of the Arthur Rank
Hospice Charity.
FUNDRAISE 2
Mellow Yellow
Join our Go Yellow campaign.
Whether you all decide to dress in
yellow for a day (why not go the
whole hog and hire a banana suit),
sell our sunflower pin badges, sit
in a bath of custard or serve up a
themed tasty treat for the day –
the choices are endless for some
real FUNdraising.
3
All fired up
Light the barbeque, invite
friends and family for some
summer favourites and ask
them to make a donation for
the pleasure.
4
Let’s get quizzical
Everyone loves taking part
in a quiz, so why not organise
your own, and get family, friends
and colleagues to attend.
Or ask your local pub to host a
quiz night in aid of the Hospice.
5
Get sponsored
Think of something you
want to do, but so far haven’t
got round to, then make it
a little more of a challenge
and get sponsored for it. For
example – you want to learn to
swim, then do so but challenge
yourself to 100 lengths, or want
to lose a few pounds – then do
the unthinkable and give up
chocolate for 6 months. The list
goes on…
6
Sweepstake
It can be anything from
who will win the Grand National,
World Cup or any other result,
even guess the weight of the
baby!
7
Quiet please sponsored silence
Are you a noisy group or known
to like a natter? Why not offer
to give people’s ears a break in
return for sponsorship!
8
Dress Down Day
Want to ditch that uniform,
suit or normal work attire for
a day? Charge a nominal fee
for colleagues, pupils or group
members to wear something they
want for the day – within reason!
9
Hostess with the
mostest
Host a party of your choice
and invite family, friends and
colleagues along for the fun. It
can be anything from a pamper
party, to jewellery party, to
‘cooks’ party.
10
For the love of
food!
Who can eat the most crackers
or mince pies in 2 minutes?!
11
Fashion Daaarling
Show off this seasons
must haves at a fashion show,
or recycle those pre-loved
wonderful clothes at a swishing
or frock swap event.
12
Plead not guilty
at a jail and bail
This is where a few of Britain’s
most wanted (well, your boss,
your business acquaintances
and other pillars of the
community) are “arrested” and
have to phone contacts to raise
bail for their release.
13
Golf Day
For the sake of
Charity! Hold a golf competition
for budding golfers to compete
for that prized trophy or for
the less serious, why not do
a pitch and putt or crazy golf
competition!
14
Fun run
Yes, we said it - fun run;
it really can be fun if you theme
it. Why not choose from super
heros, to santas, to men dressed
as dames!
15
Prizes for
guessing
People can pay to guess the
number of sweeties in a jar, toys
in a cage, balloons in a car…the
list goes on!
16
Mind your
language
If you and your colleagues are
partial to the odd cuss, why not
install a swear box and make
the air a lighter shade of blue.
17
Knit and natter
People can’t resist
something that has been made
with love and is original. Why
not get knitting baby hats and
bootees,
scarves,
seasonal
goodies and other lovely things
which you can either sell or pass
to one of our Hospice shops to
sell.
18
All in the name
of art
Looking at local pieces of art work
is a wonderful way for people to
spend their spare time. Organise
a sale, auction or exhibition.
19
A gift of love
“I don’t want anything”
is a common response when
asking someone what to buy
them as a gift. If you have a
special birthday or anniversary,
why not ask people to make a
donation to the Hospice or take a
look at our virtual gifts catalogue.
20
_____a-thon
You fill in the blanks
– whether it be a slim-a-thon,
swim-a-thon, dance-a-thon, and
so-on(a-thon)….you catch our
drift.
21
Staying in is the
new going out
Invite friends round for dinner and/
or drinks and ask them to donate
what they would have spent if
they were out on the town.
22
Two little ducks
Host a bingo night
– stump up half the entry fee
as prize money and donate the
other half to the Arthur Rank
Hospice Charity.
23
‘Tis the season
to be jolly
Why not sing your way to
fundraising success? Get a
group together and deliver some
festive favourites, and then send
round the donation bucket.
24
Smooth operator
Are you brave enough
to put yourself up for a
sponsored leg or chest wax?
25
Small change
makes BIG
differences
Collect your loose change in one
of our collection houses, you’ll
be amazed how those coppers
and 5p’s add up. Either that or
contact the Charity about taking
part in a street collection.
26
For Sale
Hold a plant sale,
book sale, jumble sale or even
sell your items on e-bay and
donate a percentage to the
Arthur Rank Hospice Charity.
27
Speculate to
accumulate
Join in our Accumulator Challenge,
where we give teams £50 each,
to see who can turn it into the
most money for Arthur Rank
Hospice care.
28
We are the
champions!
Challenge
local
rivals
or
organisational equivalents to
a challenge; you could host an
inter-firm quiz challenge, community rounders match, schools
/ colleges hockey tournament.
29
Bags of fun
Contact your local
supermarket and ask if you can
bag customers’ shopping for a
donation. Contact the Charity
for donation buckets.
30
An hour for your
Hospice
Donate an hour of your wages
to the Arthur Rank Hospice
Charity, and see just what we
can do with an hour of you time.
£10 runs the tea bar for one day
£30 covers the cost for one
counselling session for a relative
or patient
£50 covers a month’s materials
for creative therapy sessions
£75 pays for one day’s transport
for patients and relatives
31
Sur-PRIZE
Everyone likes a flutter
– tombolas and raffles are always
great ways to raise much needed
funds for your local adult hospice.
32
Be seen to be
green
You can recycle your old mobile
phone, donate unwanted goods
to one of our charity shops, make
a donation for one of our e-cards
and even give a car by donating
your old car to Give A Car (visit
www.arhc.org.uk for details).
33
Sponsored walk
Put a leash on your
dog and explore your local
countryside, add a theme (how
about a high heel totter?!), or
join one of our walks to raise
money for specialist end of
life care in your community. Or
even better, what about taking
part in a fire walk!
34
Bullseye, potblack, or flush!
Hold a darts, snooker, pool or
card competition.
35
Challenge me
Ask
friends
and
colleagues to choose a challenge
they would be willing to sponsor
you for. Choose who you ask
carefully!
36
Auction of
promises
Persuade friends and colleagues
to donate their skills, expertise
and services for auction.
Babysitting, sports or music
lessons, decorating, ironing and
IT tuition are all favourites and will
be sure to raise a pound or two.
37
Car Wash
Offer the owners of
cars, that look black but have a
glint of silver underneath, with
some soap-tastic action!
38
In a word….
What about word
challenges - whether it be working
out a series of conundrums, a
scrabble competition, a spelling
bee or word association game.
There are lots of ways to have
fun with new words.
39
Start your engines
Hold a Go-Karting
competition. Get friends, family
and colleagues to enter a team
and compete for a ‘winners
trophy’. Add some drinks and
nibbles to increase the entry
fee, and overall amount raised.
40
Once in a lifetime
experience
If you are feeling adventurous,
why not take part in one of our
unforgettable challenges. You
can take part in anything from
a trek across the Sahara, to a
skydive, to a hike up Kilimanjaro.
41
Concert
Get
those
heads
swaying or toes tapping at a
showcase of your musical genius.
42
Race Night
All your race goers
need to do is pick a horse from
the runners in the programme,
a horse name they like or their
favourite number - which ever
one they think will win the race. If they are lucky, they can collect
their winning prize money!!
43
Virtual Challenge
Walk the distance of
John O’Groats to Land’s End,
swim the English Channel or cycle
from London to Paris in your gym.
44
Talent Show
Show ‘em what you’ve
got at a variety / talent show –
how can people resist an evening
full of comedy, dance and singing.
45
Got something
interesting to say?
Social clubs and groups often
invite a guest speaker along
in return for a small payment.
Why not offer to share your
knowledge and donate your
takings to the Hospice.
46
Any one for
Tennis?
Why not hold a Wimbledon sweep
stake, a Tennis tournament or
a Strawberries & Cream sale
(don’t forget the bubbly!)
47
Fundraise for Free
Yes really – if you are
one of the 79% of British web
users who buys online, then why
not shop via the Giving Machine
where every purchase you make
through your favorite on-line
retailer, triggers a free donation to
the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity:
www.thegivingmachine.co.uk
48
Chocs Away
Get creative with
chocolate and invite your
friends to be choco-creative
too - then sell tickets to an
evening of decadence, inviting
people to sample the goodies!
Maybe add a little competition
by having the ‘offerings’ judged
– a volunteer for that job won’t
be hard to find!
49
Have a Ball
Give
people
the
opportunity to get out their
glad rags and enjoy an evening
of good food and good music.
