Welcome
Dear Friends
Welcome to our autumn newsletter, which is packed full of
news, events and activities that have taken place in the last
few months. As always, our stalwart community has been busy
helping to keep the doors of Derian House firmly open to the
many children, young people and their families who rely on us.
This edition demonstrates the wide range of support we
receive. We have schoolchildren raising funds for Derian, adult
friends getting together to have fun and raise funds, people
selflessly asking for donations in lieu of birthday gifts, keen
keep-fitters taking part in a myriad of sporting activities...the
list is endless. In their own way, each and every one of them
contributes to the continuation of our work here at Derian and
our appreciation of their efforts is limitless.
As well as keeping the hospice operating on a day to day basis,
all this support also enables us to maintain the high standards
set when Derian House first opened its doors more than 20
years ago. We seek continuously to improve and update our
facilities, to ensure we can offer the best possible nursing
and general care for our children and young people as well as
extending our work in the community with our valued ‘Derian
at Home’ service.
This summer we have had a makeover of our sensory room
and soft play area, making a significant investment to
ensure that these important facilities offer the best possible
experience for the children and parents who gain benefit from
these rooms. Feedback from our families has been very positive
and we were proud to show off the new rooms at our recent
Open Day. You can see photos of this on pages 4 and 5.
We have also produced a new brochure, to describe our work
here at Derian and explain the wide range of facilities and
support on offer to those in need. We’ve uploaded a pdf format
on our website, so take a look at www.derianhouse.co.uk.
We hope you will enjoy browsing through our latest newsletter
and as always, I extend a sincere thank you for all those who
have given time, effort and and money to help Derian House.

One of the major events in the charity’s
calendar this year was our Derian House
Open Day, held on Sunday, July 27th.

Danni’s Diary / Autumn 2014
www.derianhouse.co.uk
The hospice opened its doors to the public, whilst its
grounds and gardens hosted a vast range of attractions
and activities throughout the day.
With tours around the house and lodge, led by the Care
Team at the hospice, this was the perfect opportunity
for friends, supporters and communities throughout the
region to see at first hand the specialised care and support
that Derian House provides to children and families in
Lancashire and Cumbria.
Taster sessions of Reiki, Aromatherapy and Reflexology
provided visitors with the chance to experience a range
of deep relaxation techniques, as well as the static
demonstrations of a wide range of support systems on
offer to children and families throughout the North West.
Entertainments throughout the day included music
from Chorley Silver Band, street and highland dance
from Dancing Feet, a craft and gifts fair, and a children’s
entertainer. Carousel rides, a giant inflatable slide, donkey
rides, face painting for the children, afternoon tea for the
adults, and Derian Danni, the hospice mascot on hand to
welcome visitors to the hospice, all contributed to a wide
range of activities for the whole family.
Head of Fundraising Susie Poppitt said: “The Open Day was
a fantastic success, with lots of people joining us to see the
amazing facilities we have here at Derian House to support
our children and their families. Even the weather was kind
to us and everyone who came enjoyed a very happy day.”

Queen honours
Derian-Aire Joy
For many people retirement is a time for putting
their feet up and taking it easy after decades of
working. But 13 years after retiring from her job as a
home help for Lancashire County Council, Joy Mills
is busier than ever.
The 74 year old has helped to raise more than
£116,000 for Derian House by performing in Care
Homes and other locations as a founding member
of the Derian-Aires. She is also a dedicated member
of St Ambrose Church in Leyland taking on many
voluntary roles including visiting parishioners in
their homes.
Joy also delivers library books to people’s homes for
the WRVS and volunteers at St Catherine’s Hospice.
Now Joy has had her efforts given the Royal seal of
approval as she has been selected by the Queen to
receive the British Empire Medal.
Joy said, “I don’t really know why I deserve the
BEM…I was absolutely shocked rigid. I didn’t even
know what a BEM was! I’m overawed really, I don’t
feel I’m worthy of this to be honest”
A date has not been set for Joy to receive her BEM,
but she already has a new outfit for it!
Joy says her biggest achievement is the £116,000
she has helped to raise for Derian House. She
formed the Derian-Aires 20 years ago with a group
of friends and plays the keyboard while they sing.
The group performs in supermarkets, care homes
6
Danni’s Diary / Autumn 2014
and other venues around the North West, and every
penny they raise comes to Derian House. It was a
visit to Derian House that led to them supporting
the hospice.
Joy said, “We went to Derian House to look round
it. There was so much for the children who have no
hope of a long life that we decided that would be
the best cause to raise money for.”
The group originally wanted to raise £100,000 for
Derian House, and have now set a new target of
£150,000. And Joy insists they have no plans to
give up performing. She said, “I thoroughly enjoy
playing the keyboard. I love the music, I love the
girls. It’s wonderful, absolutely brilliant.”
Said Head of Fundraising for Derian House, Susie
Poppitt, “We are absolutely delighted that Joy has
been selected for this prestigious award. This is
such a well deserved honour, and the amount of
money that Joy and the Derian-Aires have raised for
us over the past 20 years is simply phenomenal. We
could never have expected such an incredible sum
in a million years, and “thank you” seems somewhat
inadequate in the face of such incredible support.
On behalf of everyone at Derian House we would
like to say congratulations to Joy, and a massive
thank you to her and the rest of the Derian-Aires,
past and present, for everything they have done in
support of the hospice”.

PEDESTRIANS
RAISE AN AMAZING
£102,365.77
Derian House was delighted to be
chosen back in 2012 as the nominated
charity of the highly successful charity
fundraisers, the Red Sea Pedestrians.
We were even more thrilled when the
amazing group contacted the charity
again and invited us to identify a new
project that they could support.
We were in the process of expanding our Derian at Home
service, a facility that provides families with the means to
care for their child at home with the support of a dedicated
“At Home” team. It was a cause which resonated on a
number of levels with the Red Sea Pedestrians and they
immediately began to put plans in place for their Spring Ball
in support of Derian House to be held at the Lowry.
Members of the Red Sea Pedestrians
and the Derian House team celebrate
the presentation of a cheque for
£102,365.77 to Georgina Cox, our CEO
and Julie Atherton our Clinical Director.
This year’s event, a glamorous, high profile affair was held on
Saturday 8th March at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester where
the Red Sea Pedestrians were supported by a range of
sponsors including Stocktons, Premex Group, Beaverbrooks
the Jewellers and QCP Global.
Kim Forgione, a bereaved Mother, spoke movingly at the
Ball about how Derian supported her and her husband,
Sean, when they lost their little boy, Frankie.
Once again this glittering, star studded event proved to be
an incredible success with an amazing £102,365.77 raised
on the night.
We are thrilled and honoured to have been selected for
support once again by this amazing group of dedicated
fundraisers and thank them for their tremendous efforts
and generosity. This year’s Spring Ball was full of colour,
entertainment and fun, an unforgettable evening driven by
a dedicated group of people with an incredible commitment
to fundraising.

Duncans’ Golf Day rolls in the funds
The Red Sea Pedestrians fundraising committee.
Ken and Lee Duncan are no strangers to organising charity
Golf Days. With a series of popular golfing events which
attract teams from all over the North West, they are well
known for their tremendous ongoing support of Derian House.
Their first event in 1997 was at Fishwick Hall Golf Club, where
they stayed for four years before moving to Leyland Golf Club,
which became home to the Golf Day for a further eight years
before they moved to Shaw Hill six years ago, where the event
continues to be held to this day.

This year’s Golf Day in June proved to be another highly
successful fundraiser for the hospice with a fantastic £3,000
raised on the day.
Since the inaugural event in 1997, Lee & Ken have raised an
amazing £60,006, with Ken presenting an additional £410 in
lieu of gifts from his 70th birthday

Darts challenge scores a bull’s eye for Derian!
Darts enthusiasts at 15 Bravo Inn pubs had a rare opportunity to play
with a real professional when PDC star Andy ‘The Hammer’ Hamilton
challenged players in each of the North West pubs to a game.
Tickets for the challenge were pre-sold
at £100 each and a number of darts
enthusiasts enjoyed the privilege of playing
with the 2012 world darts championship
finalist. The event raised more than £7,000
and Derian House was fortunate to be
chosen to receive half the proceeds.

Summer Pilot Projects at Derian
We are very excited
to share the news
about two projects we
launched during the
Summer Holidays –
Family Day Care and
Schools Out for Summer.
Family Day Care
Family Day Care has taken place every
Tuesday from 10-3pm throughout the school
holidays. It has offered an opportunity for
families to have fun together and share the
fantastic facilities we have at Derian House.
Although activities had been drawn up,
the team at Derian were flexible and made
changes on the day to suit the requests of
families.
The programme included badge making,
swimming, arts and crafts, relaxation in
our sensory room, soft play, picnic lunch,
music, complementary therapy and story
time. The aim has been to give families the
opportunity to share activities and also to offer
complementary therapy to parents whilst our
staff take care of their children. We are keen to
obtain feedback after each session to enable
us to ensure we are meeting the expectations
of families participating in the pilot.
Now the summer holidays are at an end, the
project will be evaluated and we are very
hopeful that we will be able to roll out our
Family Day Care during all school holidays to
more families in the future.

Schools out for Summer
Schools out for Summer has taken place
every Wednesday throughout the summer
holidays. This pilot has been aimed specifically
at younger teenage boys with a life limiting
condition – Duchenne Muscular Dystropy
(DMD). The idea originated from requests by
parents of boys with DMD as some of them
believed it would be socially enriching if their
son, or in some cases, sons had an opportunity
to develop friendship groups with other young
teenagers with the same condition.
The team at Derian agreed that this would
be an excellent opportunity for the boys to
spend quality time together with the hope
that friendships may form. We believe this is
very valuable for them as young teenagers as
once they reach the age of 16 they are able
to access Derian Lodge which is a specialised
facility for young adults from the age of
16 – 26 years.
peers. Parents dropped their sons at Derian
at 10am and collected them at 4pm. The boys
got very involved in planning the days which
included swimming, Xbox tournaments, pizza
making, arts and crafts, chill out time, a walk
to Astley Park, badge making and simply
chatting together. Each week the boys made
suggestions about what they would like to do
the following week.
Sunday Splash
We are planning a further pilot in the autumn
which will provide the opportunity for families
to spend quality time in the pool. This came
from parent requests, with some families
explaining how they would welcome the
opportunity of having special time together as
a family in the pool. We plan to allocate these
on Sunday afternoons.
For further news on Sunday Splash please
contact Helen Fogg on 01257 233 300.
The pilot commenced on 23 July and on
average of six boys attended the weekly fun
day for a period of six weeks. From the very
first sessions the scheme has been a huge
success. None of the boys had met before the
pilot began and quickly made friends with their

Are you an award winning volunteer?
Or do you know someone who is?
Help the Hospices is the leading UK charity that supports both adult and children’s
hospices throughout the UK, including Derian House. Help the Hospices is calling for
entries for its annual award ceremony and we believe we have some worthy contenders
among our own fantastic volunteers.
The 2014 Awards will be held during the Help the Hospices annual conference, which
takes place in Leeds this November. Among the categories is the opportunity to recognise
volunteers, without whom many of the hospices in the UK would be unable to function. We
know the volunteers who work with Derian are outstanding and deserve recognition for all
their work and we feel confident that they could also potentially be award winners, but we
need your help.
The two relevant categories are Volunteer of the Year 2014 and Innovation in Volunteering.
If you know someone in the Derian community who is a potential worthy winner of
one of these awards, please contact Laura Smith, our Volunteer Services Manager, on
01257 233 300 or email [email protected] and she will explain how
you can enter the awards.
But hurry! The deadline for entries is Monday 15th September.
New sensory
sensations
for Derian
The major refurbishment of the charity’s Soft
Play area and Sensory Room took Suffolk based
company Sensory+ just seven weeks to complete
to provide fantastic state of the art facilities for
children at the hospice. With a range of interactive
sound, light and texture options to stimulate
specialised sensory play the new facility has
exceeded all expectations.
Flooring suppliers Karndean, who were involved
with major refurbishments at the hospice last year,
were so impressed with the care facility the hospice
provides to life threatened children and their families
throughout the region, they generously donated the
flooring for the Sensory Room and Soft Play area free
of charge.
And to the delight of hospice staff, local firm
Gainsborough Flooring from Preston added to the
donation with a goodwill gesture of their own in
providing specialised staff to lay the floor without
12
Danni’s Diary / Autumn 2014
charge. Indeed, James Barnes of the Gainsborough
Sales & Marketing Team was so impressed with the
work of Derian House he has decided to support
the charity with fundraising events of his own in the
future.
Said James: “What an absolutely fantastic facility
Derian House is! You don’t realise the size and extent
of it until you’ve been round the whole place, and
when you have, it really is the most heart-warming
experience”
And the final endorsement of the new facilities came
from the general public who visited the hospice for
the Open Day on July 27th, and were simply bowled
over by the incredible resources that Derian House
provides.
www.derianhouse.co.uk
A step in the right direction…
… that was the intention of the 95 walkers who set off on the
Morecambe Cross Bay walk in support of Derian House in July
this year.
This age old tradition that has been handed down through
generations was once again the means of raising much needed
funds for the hospice.
Steeped in legend, the ever shifting sands of Morecambe Bay
have fascinated people for hundreds of years. Tales of swirling
mists, travellers lost, racing tides, and the famous quicksands
themselves have all combined to add to the air of mystery
surrounding the bay. But for the past eighteen years it has also
been an opportunity for the Derian House Fundraising Team to
invite people to join them and official guide across the Kent’s
Sands, Cedric Robinson, on a unique journey which ultimately
will benefit the children at the hospice.
With complimentary buses once again kindly supplied by Kirkby
Lonsdale Coach Hire, everyone parked at Kent’s Bank Station
before being transferred to the start of the walk at Arnside.
Despite a somewhat inclement weather forecast, it was a
very enthusiastic group that set off on the walk. And in true
Morecambe Bay micro-climate style, it wasn’t long before glorious
sunshine appeared and accompanied the group on their journey.
The eight miles were completed in just under three hours,
with everyone agreeing that once again Cedric had produced a
fascinating and entertaining walk which, it is hoped, will have
raised substantial funds for the hospice.
Said Head of Fundraising, Susie Poppitt, “The demand for places
for this event is always considerable, and many people enjoy it so
much they come back year on year. We’re extremely grateful to
Cedric for his tremendous input and infectious enthusiasm for an
area which he clearly loves and shares so selflessly with so many
people.
“We must also say a huge thank you to Steven and Matthew at
Kirkby Lonsdale Coach Hire for their tremendous support over the
past eighteen years. In that time they and Cedric have helped us
raise in excess of £85,000 for Derian House.”
We would love as many people as possible to come and join
us on this great day out, so if you would like to take part in the
Morecambe Bay Walk next year, please call the Fundraising Team
on 01257 271 271 for more details.

strides out for Derian
Little Hoole resident Colette Sunders
knows exactly how important Derian
House is to parents and children.
Her son, Peter, has received respite
care at the hospice for the past 18
years and she is an active fundraiser
for Derian.
As well as taking part in the
Morecambe Bay Walk, she is also
planning to climb Kilimanjaro in
February to raise money for Derian.
Not content with that epic challenge,
she’s organising a Ceilidh on Saturday
8th November to boost our funds
even more. The Ceilidh will be held
at Hutton Village Hall and tickets are
£10 which includes a hotpot supper
and it’s a ‘bring your own drinks’
evening. Anyone wanting tickets can
contact Colette on 07793 209750 or

ForgetMe Not
New venue for our fabulous
Lunch
at beautiful Mitton Hall, Whalley
Ladies in Lancashire were out in force earlier this year
for a day long celebration of glamour, fashion and
beauty at our annual Forget Me Not Lunch.
With Mitton Hall in Whalley
the exciting new venue for
the event in May, our guests
were treated to a few hours of
pampering and indulgence.
The day began with a sparkling
reception and entertainment
from singer, Joe Tilly before
being entertained by our
fantastic guest speaker, Irene
Estry. Lifestyle coach, fitness
guru, television presenter, and
more recently author of the
amazing book “Growing Old
Disgracefully”, Irene provided
her audience with a glimpse
into her role as fitness coach
to the Coronation Street cast
as well as sharing her beauty
secrets and details of her
glamorous lifestyle.
After a sumptuous three course
lunch served in the beautiful
conservatory, guests were
entertained by the models in
the elegant fashion show, some
of whom bore an uncanny
resemblance to members of
the Derian Fundraising Team!
With a range of stunning
fashions on display from
Novello, guests were invited to
sit back, relax and see the best
in casual, sophisticated and
formal wear from a range of
leading designers.
Once again ladies at the event
were incredibly generous and
contributed to our raffles and
special jewellery lottery. The
beautiful freshwater pearl
earrings and star prize for the
lottery were kindly donated by
Beaverbrooks. Thanks are due
to all who supported the event
and the many companies who
donated beauty and jewellery
gifts, helping us raise more
than £6,500 on the day.

Saturday August 2nd
this year, when 26
teams lined up at

part in the challenge.

Eight charities from around the region came
together in a battle that saw them locked head
to head in a bid to rule the waves, with staff
and supporters competing for the Dragonboat
Trophy which has been won for the past two
years by NIS, a member of the Derian Corporate
Partners Group
The race, a key event in the Preston calendar,
was a day long event of fun and festivities,
with stalls, steam train rides and a fairground
providing entertainment for the whole family.
With 10 teams out of the 26 taking part raising
funds for Derian, there was plenty for the
Fundraising Team to cheer for as one of their
teams, Omnibombs stormed across the finishing
line to take the trophy!
www.derianhouse.co.uk
However, the day wasn’t without incident when
one of the boats capsized just after crossing
the finishing line in one of the earlier heats.
The Safety Boat was deployed to come to their
assistance and a further boat, caught in its wash
suffered a similar fate and also capsized!
Once everyone had been fished out of
the water, the race continued apace with
Omnibombs the overall champions on the day.

Kevin’s Solo Pedal Power
boosts funds by £800
Pedal power: Kevin in action.
Walmer Bridge resident Kevin Browne has
undertaken an epic solo bike ride from
Morecombe to Whitby to raise funds for
Derian. Kevin is very familiar with the
work of the hospice as his stepson,
Oliver, is a regular visitor to the hospice
for respite care.
Setting out at 6.30 am and supported only
by his wife, Yvette, who followed him in
a van with water, food and energy gels,
Kevin faced strong winds and steep climbs
as he crossed the country. His route took
him across the Pennines and on to the
halfway point at Leyburn, then on through
Northallerton and Great Ayton before
hitting the undulating A171. It was on that
road, 100 miles into his journey, that Kevin
was hit by very strong head winds. But the
welcoming sight of Yvette for a chance to
re-fill the water bottles and fuel up with
food spurred him on, as did the sight of
the North Sea, first spotted 13 miles out of
Whitby. Journey’s end was Cleveland Way
in Whitby.
A welcome stop for refuelling.
Journey’s end and a bottle of fizz is a welcome reward.
Said Kevin: “It was quite a difficult ride but
worth the effort knowing that the money
raised was going to a worthwhile cause.”

handing this season’s donation of
£1,520.00 to Roya Armstrong of
Derian House Children’s Hospice
on behalf of the clubs and players
of the Lancashire Sunday League.
This is the eleventh year that
the Derian House has been the
League’s adopted charity and this
year’s donation brings the total
amount raised by the League to
£29,201.20. Most of the money is
raised via the raffle and auction at
the Christmas League meeting and
by individual donations by member
clubs.
Premier division outfit New
Farington House FC certainly
stepped up to the plate by
organising a Christmas Fancy Dress
night when the team players, wives,
partners and friends toured the
various pubs and clubs in Leyland
and raised a staggering £600.00 as
well as having a brilliant night.
Club secretary Graeme Conroy and
manager Stephen Broomhead said
that there is a terrific spirit in the
club and the lads wanted to help
Derian House and they thought that
the fancy dress collection would
go down well just before Christmas
and it certainly did.
Levi (aged 5) and Leo (aged 6)
are sons of player Ashley Ball and
Levi has already been spotted
by Everton and he attends their
academy.
League Chairman Eamonn
McNamara said, “Another great
effort by everyone connected with
the Lancashire Sunday League and
especially the lads at New Farington
House. Derian House Children’s
Hospice is a special place and they
deserve our help and support”.
Fundraising from afar –
Mrs Softley always goes
the extra mile
We are always humbled by the
efforts of our many supporters and
fundraisers and here’s a shining
example of how much they help us.
Cleo Softley from Bradford has been
supporting Derian for more than 10
years, making hampers to be sold to
raise funds for the hospice. She first
became involved when her daughter
worked at a branch of Nationwide
Building Society which supported the
hospice. Mrs Softley made hampers
to help Nationwide raise funds for
Derian. When her daughter left the
branch, Mrs Softley decided to carry
on helping Derian.
Community Fundraising Manager
Sophie Saunders said: “Recently
I visited Mrs Softley’s home to
collect some hampers and I was
overwhelmed by her generosity in
providing a huge range of hampers
with a value in excess of £3,500.
There were 16 hampers, 21 plants
and a whole host of other goods
including some beautiful furniture
donated for sale in our charity
shops.”
Over the years Mrs Softley and her
hampers have raised in the region
of £20,000. A huge thank you is
due to Mrs Softley for her incredible
generosity and ongoing support for
Derian House.
Earlier this year Blackburn, Darwen & Rural Civic Voice organised
a festival of new singable hymns at Blackburn Cathedral. Their
president, Professor David Smalley, is a writer of hymns (words
and music) which are known nationally and he presided over
an enjoyable evening which brought together a number of
local choirs. The sizeable audience at the Cathedral included
four mayors and Bishop, the Right Reverend Geoff Pearson
and Mrs Pearson.

The choirs included The Hyndburn Singers, The Conchord Singers,
St. Christopher’s CE High School Senior Choir and Stonyhurst Schola
Cantorum. They all joined together to form a massed choir of around 150 singers to
lead the singing of 11 of David’s hymns. Helen Davies, Head of Music at St. Christopher’s did
most of the conducting.
Individual choirs also sang items on their own, and Samuel Hudson, Cathedral Director of
Music, played the organ, including a solo performance of ‘Crown Imperial’ by William Walton.
Other soloists were Dr. Kevin Morgan from Stonyhurst who received loud and prolonged
applause for his stunning playing of Fats Waller melodies on the full size concert grand.
Matthias Turner (cello) played an arrangement of ‘A Country Song’ by David Smalley.
The event grossed over £1,000 which after expenses was shared by three local charities –
Derian House Children’s Hospice, E.L. Hospice and The Cathedral Appeal.

Friends from Leigh Community
Group visited the hospice to hand
over the cheque.
The hospice was delighted to receive a donation of
£2,268.75 from Leigh Community Group following their
second annual ball. The group was formed by a group
of friends, Tonia Bridden, Heather Parker, Dave Preece,
Debbie Lowe, Kim Hope, Gina Lloyd and Garry and Nic
from G R Discos. It organises the event to help local
charities. This year Derian shared the proceeds with
another hospice.
Said Tonia: “Every one gives their time up free of charge,
our singers Chloe Pownall and David Jullien entertained
us for the evening, and a great night was had by all.”
Eggs-ceeding all
expectations!
The ladies of Southport Support Group, Joan, Fiona,
Maureen and Evelyn set a new record this Easter with their
sales of Easter chicks.
The Southport Group, which raises funds for Derian House
through the sale of knitted goods, which they take to a wide
range of venues throughout the North West, made an appeal for
people to knit the cute Easter chicks which are then filled with a
single Cadbury’s Cream egg and sold for £1.
The result was phenomenal, with people throughout the region
plying their knitting needles, and stores such as M&S, Morrisons,
Tesco, Costco and Asda donating cream eggs, until an incredible
1,922 chicks were produced and sold on behalf of Derian House.
Our Chorley
shop goes all
out to be the
blooming best
Chorley Council joined forces with the
Chorley Chamber of Trade and Chorley
Traders Alliance earlier this year to find
the town’s best shop front floral display.
This is a new competition launched as
part of Chorley’s bid for glory after the
town was selected to represent the North
West as part of the RHS Britain in Bloom
competition.
The Council was looking for nominations
for shop fronts with floral displays that
brightened up the town centre. On 7th
& 8th July an expert panel from the
Chamber of Trade was on hand to judge
each entry and select winners in each
of the categories, independent traders,
or multiple outlets.
Keen to get on board and be part of the
competition, staff at Derian’s Chorley
shop got underway with their shop front
display. With help from two volunteers,
Michele Wade and Gemma Hart the
staff set about decorating the premises
with hanging baskets and fabulous
paper flowers painted by children in the
Reception Class at Juke Street Primary
School.
Everyone is currently waiting with bated
breath for the results to be published, but
whatever the official outcome the Chorley
Shop is a definite winner with everyone at
Derian House!
A huge thank you is due to all the amazing knitters of the
North West who responded to the Southport Group’s call, to
all the stores who so kindly donated the cream eggs, and of
course to Joan, Fiona, Maureen and Evelyn themselves for their
tremendous ongoing support for Derian House.
And if anyone out there would like to get involved in knitting for
Derian, please give us a call on 01257 271 271 and we’ll point
you in the right direction!

Stephen’s 80th nets £1,000 for Derian
When Stephen McNally turned 80 in May his four daughters arranged a
party at the Mercury Hotel in Westhoughton and more than 120 guests
turned up to help him celebrate.
Big-hearted Stephen decided he didn’t really need any gifts and so asked
people to make donations to Derian House instead. Generous friends
helped him celebrate in style and Stephen’s party raised more than £600
on the night, with the grand total rising to £1,000 following a post on
Facebook.
A magician enthrals granddaughter
Scarlett, great grandson Harvey and
nieces and great nieces with his tricks.
Said Stephen: “Amongst the guests were my all my family, nieces,
nephews, cousins, childhood friends, facebook friends, people I had worked
with and even a lad I had been in the army with more than 60 years ago.
“My family had arranged a treat for me and it turned out to be a magician
who was absolutely amazing, he went round to every table in the course
of the evening and enthralled everyone. The whole evening was a fantastic
success and a credit to my family.
Stephen presents the cheque to Roya
Armstrong from the fundraising team.
“I’d like to thank my daughters Jacqueline, Jennifer, Beverley and Elizabeth
for arranging my party and say a big thank you to all of my family and
friends for their generosity in donating to such a worthy cause.”
Stephen is no stranger to Derian House, having previously supported the
hospice by donating a dolls house he had made, which was raffled at the
Christmas fair.

The event included a dog show and Regans
asked ex Bolton Wanderers player John
McGinlay to judge some of the classes and also
nominate a charity to receive half the proceeds
from the funds raised on the day. John very
kindly nominated Derian House and we are
delighted to be sharing the proceeds, with
animal charity RSPCA Bolton.
The fundraising team sent leaflets, balloons and
T shirts for Regans to give out on the day and
Derian supporters Christine and John Pearson
also attended the event to represent Derian.
The fun day raised just over £1,000 on the day,
but the group is running a raffle in the hope of
reaching £1,500 which will be split between the
two charities.
