The Mechanical Contractors
Association of Alberta regularly surveys plumbing and
heating service contractors in
the province in order to produce a report on the average
breakdown of service work
on a job of 20 hours or less.
Contractor mark-ups are not
included.
Recently released results
from the associations’ April
2005 survey indicated that
direct labour costs total
$36.60. This breaks down to
$25.01 in journeyman
wages, $2.51 in vacation/stat
holiday pay, $1.04 in
employment insurance (EI),
$1.37 in Canadian Pension
Plan (CPP), $0.69 in worker’s compensation, $0.97 in
health care and $4.04 in
pension/bonus. The association totalled overhead costs
at $43.38, which combined
with the direct labour costs,
equals a total average cost of
$79.98 per hour.

Company Profile
Over a Century of Reliable Leadership
The Ruud story started in the 1880's when
a young Norwegian engineer came to
North America and developed the first
successful automatic water heater. Since
then, Ruud has grown to be one of
Canada's and the world's most respected
brands of heating and cooling systems for
home and business.
Our hard-earned reputation for product
excellence has only been possible owing
to the thousands of contractors from the
Northwest Territories to Florida. Their realworld suggestions helped elevate the
durability of products with new innovative
benefits that are quieter, more efficient,
long lasting, easier to install and service.
Ruud approaches things simply. Listen to
what contractors need, respond with realworld solutions that improves Contractor
profitability and customer satisfaction.
Each year more and more contractors
throughout Canada find that doing business with Ruud is faster, easier, simpler…and healthier to their bottom line.

QUALITY OIL BURNER COMPONENTS
Danfoss is a global
leader in the development and production
of quality oil burner
components. Product
quality is assured
through ISO 9001 certification. While quality
is very important, the
environment is equally
important. As an environmentally responsible
company, Danfoss has also achieved ISO 14001
certification. The Danfoss BFPH fuel unit exemplifies these standards. A unique automatic by-pass
provides easy installation in one-line supply or
two-line supply/return applications. The internal by-pass
automatically opens to the
supply side of the pump should
any pressure develop on the
return side of the pump.
A technician has no concern
about installing a manual by-
pass plug or rupturing shaft seals. Complementing
the automatic by-pass is a mechanical, fluid shaft
seal rated at 30 psi. This seal design not only
retains fuel within the pump but also ensures no
pump vacuum leakage in applications where vacuum loss can be a problem. Quality is assured by
means of continuous monitoring throughout the
production process. 100% of all fuel units are tested before leaving the production line. Nozzles
ensure the pressurized fuel from the fuel unit is
atomized properly for combustion. Danfoss nozzles have evolved through more than 50 years of
research and development. Close tolerances to
rated output and in spray pattern create a high
quality nozzle for consistent combustion results.
Available in outputs from .30 to
30 gph, various spray patterns
and angles are available to
meet the requirements of
today’s most demanding applications. As with the fuel units
all oil nozzles are 100% tested
before leaving production.

On September 1st of 2005, ownership of OS&B changed hands. With renewed vigor and an

THE WAY IT SHOULD BE
Manufacturer
Wholesaler
There have been many positive changes at
Bradford White in the past couple of years.
With so many new products, new acquisitions and new technologies, we thought the
timing was right to re-introduce you to
“Everything Bradford White”.
Simply put, Bradford White has it all; from 2gallon compacts to industrial giants, and
from the super-efficient eF Series® – the
standard of the class – to large volume storage tanks with capacities up to 5,600 gallons, we set the mark by which others measure themselves. Our Defender Safety
System™ FVIR Technology is second to
none and our EverHot® line of tankless, gas
powered water heaters has taken the
Canadian market by storm.
We have expanded our line of PowerStor
Series™ Indirect Water Heaters through the
recent purchase of AEROSO, a manufacturer of stainless steel indirect water heaters.
Now branded as Aero Series PowerStor SS,
they are available in 40, 52, 75, 75D (double
coil), and 119 gallon sizes. For residential
installations, the warranty has been improved
to a limited lifetime warranty.
Bradford White's acquisition of Niles Steel
Tank has also expanded our offerings, now
enabling us to provide storage tanks with
capacities up to 5,600 gallons. These competitively priced tanks are available glass
lined, double glass lined, epoxy lined, or in
stainless steel. They are available bare, jacketed or with a polyurethane foam insulation
protected by a weatherproof acrylic outer
coating. No matter what the application,
there's likely a Bradford White made solution
for you.

We continue to enjoy great success with our
eF Series® commercial water heaters. The
eF Series® is noticeably quieter than any
other water heater in its class – a significant
benefit that is much appreciated by building
owners, managers and occupants. These
heaters also have remarkable thermal efficiency ratings (as high as 99.1%!) and offer
exceptional installation flexibility. All models
can vent vertically or horizontally and are
approved for unbalanced, direct-vent closed
combustion applications.

Oil-Fired Water Heater
Like many aspects of the mechanical industry, changes in standards continue to shape
the water heater industry. In 2005, CSA
announced the requirement of blocked flue
vent switches for all oil-fired equipment.
Responding to these changes, blocked flue
vent switches are now supplied as standard
equipment on all Bradford White oil-fired
water heaters and pool heaters.
Throughout all these changes, one thing
remains constant; Bradford White products
are sold exclusively through wholesale distribution. We are committed to being your partner, not your competitor. You can rest
assured that every Bradford White product
on the market has traveled down the road
from Manufacturer to Wholesaler to

for high-pressure ductwork while providing 1.2
R.S.I at 22 mm and 1.5 R.S.I at 28 mm. And
with a fully aluminum-faced airstream surface,
the Knauf KoolDuct System delivers indoor air
quality performance with easy cleaning and
maintenance.
The Knauf KoolDuct System can also be
installed flush against the wall or ceiling,
making better use of space in the ceiling cavity, and is easily fabricated to accommodate
piping or other unexpected obstructions - two
key advantages over wrapped sheet metal
ductwork.
The system has been used in major industrial and commercial projects across the globe
for nearly three decades. In late 2003, Knauf
acquired exclusive rights to bring this highperformance option to the North American
construction industry. The Knauf KoolDuct
System has quickly won converts among
architects, engineers and contractors, and is
being used with great success on projects
across the continent.
The Knauf KoolDuct System also brings compelling benefits to the design and construction
phases of a project. Weighing just 15% as
much as a corresponding section of sheet
metal ductwork, Knauf KoolDuct is easy to
handle and install. And because pre-insulated
Knauf KoolDuct is installed as a finished system, there's no need for two trades on site.
This saves significant time and labour, helping
projects stay on schedule and within budget.
