Sevai – Bursary Awards and Family Adoption Scheme
The Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple Sevai project helps needy families
annually to cope with the financial pressures of life. Low income and
needy families are given one time bursaries or monthly help in the
form of provisions, for example, some families have small children
which require provisions such as milk powder, diapers and other
daily consuming items. Others are senior citizens and are better
served through NTUC vouchers for them to make purchases for their
needs. Some needy students could use help in the form of educational reimbursements and monthly transport top-ups.

SENIOR MINISTER VISITS
Senior Minister, Mr Goh Chok Tong visited the Sri Senpaga
Vinayagar Temple (SSVT) on 13th March 2011 and was
honoured by SCTA and SSVT officials. Mr Chan Soo Sen,
MP for Joo Chiat accompanied Mr Goh on his visit. Mr
Goh broke the first of 108 coconuts signifying the removal
of obstacles to pave the way for good fortune and luck.
Mr Goh was the Guest of Honour of the Temple
Consecretion ceremony (Maha Kumbabishegam) on 7th
February 2003.

Sevai – Bursary Awards and Family
Adoption Scheme
This year 13 applicants will be receiving monthly
provisions , 21 applicants will be receiving monthly
transport top-ups, 3 families will be receiving
educational reimbursements, 1 family will receive
monthly utility reimbursements, 7 senior citizens from Joo Chiat and one devotee will be receiving NTUC vouchers.
The Sevai Volunteer Team reviewed the applications
from individuals, via recommendations of social
services agencies, community centres, schools,
MCYS and Sinda. The team then visited the homes
of the applicants to find out what their needs truly
are and how we could help them. Criteria used by
the team for the selected families included the total
income of the family, the no. of people, school going
children and small children, the needs of the family
and whether they are receiving any other form of
assistance from other organisations and schools. The Sevai Committee also saw the inclusion
of two young energetic volunteers, Sivanathan

Jheevanesh and Phrabagaran s/o Ramanathan in
our team.
This year the Sevai Fund was further blessed with
the kind donation received from Lee Foundation and
Kwan Im Temple. Both these organisations donated
$10,000 each, making it possible for us to help more
needy families.
Sevai 2011 was launched at the Pongal festival. Mr
Chan Soo Sen MP for Joo Chiat and Dr Theyvandran
President SCTA presented hampers to the needy
families. Arrangements have been made to deliver
monthly assistance to the homes of the beneficiaries
by the 3rd weekend of each month.

support to the needy families or as volunteers in
adopting a family or as student mentors please call

My experience as a member of the Sevai
Committee
As a member of the Sevai Committee, I witnessed
first-hand the plight of low-income families in
Singapore. It was an eye-opener to observe the
hardship that they go through, and at the same time
one is able to appreciate the grit and willingness
of these families to break out of the poverty
cycle. Several of the houses we had visited were
single mother ones, and it was evident that they
were working hard to provide a good education
to their children despite their economic woes. It
was reassuring to note that most of these families
were in the know of avenues where they could
receive financial aid, such as our Sevai Committee.
My experience as a member of this committee
has made me appreciate my relatively more
comfortable standard of living and reminded me
not to take what we have for granted. Lastly, it was
also inspiring to see that some of the less well-off
students were excelling in their studies, and should
serve as a reminder that one determines one’s
own destiny and regardless of one’s background,
one will always be rewarded for one’s hard work.

Nadarajar Issai Araadhanai
THAI PUSAM – The Day on which Lord Nadarajar
revealed himself to his devotees at Chidambaram
and performed the “Aananda Thandavam”. To
commemorate this auspicious event , the now annual
“ Nadarajar Issai Araadhanai” was held for the third
year running at Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple.
Once again, some of Singapore’s leading Carnatic
vocalists and musicians seized this golden
opportunity to gather in front of Lord Nadarajar at the
Vasantha Mandapam and in unison render a soulstirring repertoire of songs praising His glory. Before
each song, important verses were highlighted which
served to enlighten the audience. The evening was
concluded with an emotive musical interlude followed
by an invigorating Bharathanatyam rendition.
A truly memorable evening immersed in divinity and
music when one felt transported to Lord Nadarajar’s
Abode…….. “Thillai” itself!!!!

THAI PONGAL CELEBRATIONS 2011
at Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple
Once again the Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple
proudly organised Thai Pongal 2011 together with
Joo Chiat CC IAEC. The Kampong Kembangan SCEC
and the Marine Parade IAEC were also part of this
extremely successful event.
Thai Pongal is a festival which encourages social
cohesiveness and unites people by bringing them
together at a common function. The celebration is
a Tamil traditional Thanksgiving ceremony. Tamil
farmers celebrate the occasion to thank the God Sun
and the farm animals for their assistance in providing
a successful harvest.
Thai Pongal 2011 celebrations began at the Sri
Senpaga Vinayagar Temple premises with the arrival
of the Guest-of-Honour (GOH), Mr. Chan Soo Sen, the

MP for Joo Chiat Constituency and Adviser to the Joo
Chiat grassroots organisations.
The President of SCTA, Dr. R. Theyvendran, the
committee members of the SCTA and the SSVT and
various community leaders were present to grace
the occasion. The programme consisted of many
activities lined up one after the other to entertain the
guests as well as encourage them to take part in the
celebrations.
The first highlight of the programme was our GOH
issuing bursaries to students from needy families.
This is an annual ceremony for the Temple.
The second important activity was the Pongal
demonstration and participation. More than 30

ladies were involved in the cooking of the Pongal rice
offering. There were three different pots for Pongal
preparation dedicated to different groups of people.
One pot was solely managed by the youngsters and
the other two pots by various guests from the different
community clubs. All the guests and visitors had
so much fun, learning how to cook the Pongal rice
offering which was made out of rice, milk and syrup,
extracted from crushed sugar cane. Even though the
smoke caused many to shed tears, they truly enjoyed
and appreciated the uniqueness of the Tamil culture.
Next, the guests and spectators were encouraged
to participate in the Pongal dance to celebrate the
joy of the event. The dance was taught to all those
present - and they were asked to follow. From young
to old, everyone took part in the dance and our very
own Music Dance Academy Music Teacher, Mrs.
Bhaigyamurthy, sang for everyone present.
The guests themselves performed various authentic
traditional dance movements and enjoyed the
evening. Later, the guests and congregation were
taken on a temple tour to provide some insights
about our unique Temple architecture.
Finally, the guests had some light refreshments
including the Pongal rice, specially prepared for the
occasion. They also received a small Vinayagar as a
token of appreciation and a book about the temple.

Mother’s Day cum Family Day
SCTA and SSVT will be celebrating Mother’s Day on 24th April 2011, with mothers and their families on a Duck
Tour and Dinner. The entourage will be leaving the Temple at 3.00pm and returning at about 9.00pm. They
would be going for a Duck Tour as well as visiting Marina Sands Park (57th storey) and then having dinner.

“Celebrating 100 Years” The Book & Documentary DVD
The 200 page book is a special commemorative limited edition that
was launched by the Honourable Minister for Finance Mr. Tharman
Shanmugaratnam at the celebrations on 31st July 2010. This book
covers a brief synopsis on the Ceylon Tamil Pioneers of Singapore and
Malaya. There are limited copies of the above book left for all those
who are interested in obtaining a copy.

SCHOOL STUDENTS CELEBRATE THAI PONGAL
The Thai Pongal event was completed successfully,
though not without some hiccups. The 2010 event was
an unqualified success, and we expected the 2011 to
proceed along similar lines. But Pillayar, who is fond of
testing HIS devotees and decided to break two of the
pots – perhaps reminding us of our error in starting
the event without breaking coconuts! This year as in
2010, the adults helped out in setting up of the pots
and starting the fire. Thereafter the work was done by
the students. The Secondary Students were in charge
with the teachers guiding in the background. The
presence of a cow and a calf (on the initiative of Mr S
Mayurathan) was as usual a favourite with the small
ones, who were taking turns to feed the calf.
The breaking of two pots delayed the proceedings,
and the Ganesha Homam conducted by devotees
meant that the Chief Priest could not be present to
perform the Gomatha Puja and to bless the Pongal.
However, Kuhan Sarma took over and everything went
off smoothly.
The Homam with the Nadhaswaram playing, required
us to shift the second part of the ceremony to the
Wedding Hall, where the Sound System was found
wanting. However, with the aid of the Sound system
from the ground floor the event was concluded, but
with a delay of about 45 minutes.
The School expresses its gratitude to :
• Mr Kuhan Kandiah who was in charge of this event,
which was well planned and executed except for
Pillayar’s intervention.
• Mr S Kapilan, Mr Sivasithamparam and Mr S
Mayurathan for giving out the prizes for the
participants (from the Nursery/Playgroup and
Kindergarten classes) of Pongal Colouring
Competition.
• The class teachers Mrs Anisha, Ms Judy and Mrs
Sorubi together with the helpers Mrs Revathi,
Mrs Parameswari and Mrs Panchacharam for
conducting the Colouring Competition.
• A post-mortem on the Pongal Vizha was held as
part of the Staff meeting on 30 Jan 2011 and decided
among other things to use aluminium pots for the
Pongal, if it is not mandatory to use earthenware
pots or to ensure the quality of the pots.

SAIVA SAMAYA SCHOOL NAVARATHIRI VIZHA 2010
The annual Navarathiri Vizha was held on Sunday 10th October at
the Kalamandapam.
School Advisor, Mr E Narasinghan was the Guest of Honour, and
Mr C Thiruchelvarayan sponsored the lunch and the afternoon
pooja.
As has been the tradition, the students assembled at the
Vasantha Mandapam, where the Chief Priest, Sri Pabhakara
Kurukkal conducted the prayers. They then moved off to the
Kalamandapam.
The programme started off with a few parents, guests lighting the
ceremonial kuttu vilakkus and an opening prayer by Rajalakshmi
and Arani.
The Nursery/Playgroup started the proceeding by dancing to Gaja
Mukha Ganapati after which the Principal gave the Report for the
Year in which he traced the progress made during the year.
Guest of Honour, Mr E Narasinghan said that he was pleased to
be present and with the progress made by the school. He said
that with Senpaga Vinayagar’s blessings the school will continue
to do well. He thanked the teachers, all of whom were volunteers,
for their devoted service, without which nothing substantial could
be achieved.
The other classes then presented their items, with the Viluppaattu
by the P3 & P4 students was the highlight of the day. The
Villuppaattu was traditionally performed by the P5/P6 students
but Mr Rathakrishna Sarma was quite confident that the P3/P4
students could cope with it and they did not disappoint him.

The prizes were given away by Dr Subothini, Mr S Yogaraja, Mr S
Kapilan, Mr S Mayurathan, Mr Siva Mahendran, Dr S Kasinathan,
Dr R Theyvendran, Mr E Narasinghan who also gave away the
Certificates of Appreciation to volunteers.
Our Trustee, Prof M Sornarajah, then draped Mr S Pakeerathan
with a golden shawl, garlanded him and presented him with a
Souvenir. Mr Pakeerathan, who actively participated in a number
of the school activities, taught Thevarams was our liason with
the Singapore Thirumurai Conference was migrating to Australia
after having served the school and the community for more than
10 years.
The function came to an end at 1150 hrs with the singing of the
school song.
The students had a sumptuous lunch,

SAIVA SAMAYA SCHOOL STUDENTS VISIT
SRI THENDAYUTHAPANI TEMPLE
About 80 students and teachers from the Saiva Samaya School visited Sri Thendayuthapani Temple at Tank
Road on Sunday 24 October 2010.
At the temple we were met by officials of the temple and taken on a tour of the temple.
A lively question and answer session followed in which students learned that in the old days (about 150 years
ago) it was taboo to ship deities, and a Vel was installed. Since the Vel is installed in the garbagraha, there is
no need for a kodistambam.
The temple has a number of unique features – a pandaram performs duties at the Vel shrine, while Brahmin
priests perform the puja at the Sivan and Ambal shrine. The temple also has a shrine for Navagrahas.
After the question and answer session, the students were given vadai and drinks and it was time to take leave
of Sri Thendayuthapani but not before posing for a photograph in front of the imposing Rajagopuram.

Teachers’ Workshop
The workshop started with a thevaram by Mr P Rathakrishna Sarma, was held in two segments. The first
session which emphasised planning and sharing was drafted and planned by Mr K Kuhan.
Inaugurating the workshop, School Supervisor Mr S Mayurathan stressed the need for periodical assessment
on the way the school functions and how we can better serve the students. Teamwork was essential in
ensuring that the worked flowed from one level to the other and making sure that all relevant topics were well
understood by the students.
The Vice Principal, Mr R Sivasubramaniam, elaborated on the need for sharing and teamwork, which would
lead to a better service culture in the school.
Mr K Kuhan, IT co-ordinator, using PowerPoint slides, spoke on how the teachers could use IT and how it
could be a very useful tool in the teaching/learning process. His presentation which was supposed to be for 5
minutes went on for more than 30 minutes, because of lively discussions on the various topics. He summarised
the usefulness of the various IT resources and suggested that for a start, teachers could consider the following.

Mr T Prashanthan and Mrs M Mallika gave some tips on how Speech Training could help students, Mrs K
Sorubi illustrated with examples on how worksheets could be planned to arouse the interest of students in the
lessons.
The teachers were grouped as follows:
Mrs K Sorubi, Ms S Judy and Mrs T Anisha took on the task of how the teaching of Tamil in the Nursery/
Kindergarten classes could be planned to create a smooth transfer of learning from one level to the other.
Mrs M Mallika, Mr P Rathakrishna Sarma and Mr S Thayalan were tasked to plan a topic that could be taught
across the lower Primary classes.
Mr K Kuhan, Mr T Prashanthan and Mrs I Prashanthee set about how students could be made to do a project
and present it to their classmates.
The three groups then worked out strategies and presented them.
The first part of the workshop was planned to end at 12 noon, but so keen were the discussions that it was
almost 1 p.m. by the time we went down for lunch.
The second part which was conducted by the SCTA Education Secretary, Mr Siva Mahendran focussed on team
building. After a short talk (illustrated by Power Point slides) the teachers were split into two groups and had
games to foster team spirit.
The session ended by 1615 and all felt that it had been a worthwhile day.

6th Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Music and
Dance Academy Day
Our Music and Dance Academy (MDA)
proudly organised its 6th Academy
Day on the 18th of September 2010
at Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple
Kala Mandapam. We were delighted
to see a crowd of over 600 people
gathered in the hall to support our
Academy students. The Guest of
Honour Associate Professor Fatimah
Lateef (MP Marine Parade GRC and
Adviser to Marine Parade GROs)
lighted the oil lamp and started the
Academy Day. The Special Guest was
Mr. Radha Vijayan (Music Director
and Composer) who gave a mind
blowing speech to motivate our
teachers and as well our students.
At the end of every academic year
we organise an Academy Day to
give our students an opportunity to
show case their talents and also to
boost their confidence as an artist.
This event will give a chance to all
our talented academy students to
perform an item.
The opening item for the evening
was a dance performance called
“Pushpanjali”, which was performed
by Ms. Durga Manimaran’s students.
After this devotional performance,
next was a “Thillana”, which was
performed by Ms. Maalika’s students.
Apart from various dance pieces, we
also heard Mrs. Bagya’s and Ms.
Geetha’s students sing, Mr. Lazar’s
and Adithiya’s students played the
keyboard and violin, Mr. Kajan’s
students played the Mridangam, Mr.
Sanjeev’s the Tabla, Mrs. Thayapari’s
students play Veena and lastly Ms.
Kamala’s students the Sitar.

6th Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Music and Dance Academy Day con’t
We are pleased to announce that
forty one of our academy students
who were qualified to take the
examination for their respective
classes have passed it successfully. It’s
worth mentioning that twenty six out
of forty one students obtained higher
distinction in their examination. All the
students who passed the examination
received a certificate on stage by their
own teachers on that day. This was to
honour the students and teachers and
also to encourage them to push their
limits to perform better in future.
Our Academy has a total of two
hundred and thirty students enrolled in
various dance, vocal and instrumental
classes. To conduct these classes
we have fourteen famous capable
teachers in our team. Our academy
is always looking for ways to expand
to provide even more Fine Arts for
our students and also to help them
develop their unique talents.

Sri Purandara Dasa Event on 5th February 2011
Jointly Organised by SSVT Music & Dance Academy &
Kannada Sangha (Singapore)
5th February 2011, Saturday evening – The beautifully
decorated auditorium reverberated with the melodious
compositions of Karnataka Sangeeta Pitamaha, Shri
Purandara Daasaru. The occasion was Purandara
Namana 2011 - A homage to the Father of Karnatic Music,
jointly organized by Kannada Sangha (Singapore) & Sri
Senpaga Vinayagar Temple Music & Dance Academy.
Purandara Namana is organised annually by Kannada
Sangha & achieves newer heights every year under the
able guidance of Gana Kogile Smt. Bhagya Murthy, well
supported by many cultural organisations and artistes
from Singapore & abroad. This year’s programme
was a beautiful tapestry of vocal and BharataNatyam
presentations interwoven with a brief glimpse into
the inner meanings of the compositions presented
by the world renowned authority on Daasa Sahitya,
Vidyavachaspathy Dr Aralumallige Parthasarathy
from Bengaluru. The theme chosen for congregational
singing this year was ‘Taatvika’ – krithis like manava
shodhisabEku (one should analyse self on a daily basis)
which contain philosophical and social messages in
simple language easily understood by common man.
The English narration helped the younger generation as
well as non-Kannadigas understand and appreciate
better the songs of Purandara Daasa while the
combination of singing-dancing-narration made the
entire celebration more meaningful and enthralling for
an audience of over 400 music lovers.
Similar synchronisation was exhibited by the students
of Kanaka Sabha who danced to a rare composition
devoted to Rama Bhakta Hanuman.
During the latter part of the evening, Dr.Parthsarathy
was honoured by Kannda Sangha & SSVT while Dr.Vijay
Kumar, President of Kannada Sangha presented the
Vote of Thanks. Well known composition Tamburi
MiTidava which drew cries of ‘Once More’ from the
audience marked the finale with a concluding ugABhoga
presented by Sahana Ramachandra. The programme
was well supported by MDA Vidwan Shri Saravanan on
flute, MDA Vidwan Shri Adithya on violin & Vidwan Shri
Akhilesh on mridangam. Also from the MDA, Geetha
and her students, Mrs Thayapari and Mrs Saras also
participated. Vishalakshi hosted the programme while
lead singers included Sahana Ramchandra, Shobha
Raghu of Daasa Koota and Prathima Bellave among
others.

Programme began with the ceremonial lamp lighting,
followed by a welcome speech by Kamala Das of
SSVT. An overview of the great composer’s life and
compositions was presented by Dr. Parthasarathy.
Prelude to congregational singing was a krithi in praise
of Shri Purandara Daasa rendered in the beautiful vocals
of Bhagya Murthy. The congregational singing lead by
Bhagya, began with SwaraavaLi & Pillari GeethegaLu,
followed by compositions oora dEvara mADabEkaNNa,
kAgada bandide, rAgi tandirO, manava shOdhisabEku &
ellAnu ballenembuviralla. The singing was interspersed
with dance items presented by students of SriLakshmi
of GICC, Maalika Panicker of Akash Ganga, Kanaka
Sabha’s Dr. Siri Rama & Chitrakala’s Chitra Shankar.
The beautiful costumes and props of GICC students
and their wonderful coordination & presentation further
enhanced the meaning of Murahara Nagadhara.

NAVARATHIRI CELEBRATIONs
Navarathiri is one of the most important festivals
in Hindu Temples to worship the Mother
Goddess in her different forms, Durga, Lakshmi
and Saraswathi for nine days. It is also a time
to celebrate Indian Fine Arts and appreciate its
divine nature.
The festival commemorates the victory of
Goddess Paarvathy over the Demon King
Mahishasuran. It is stated that the Demon King
Mahishasuran was ill-treating the people to
great extents and the people who could not bear
his ill treatment approached Goddess Paarvathy,
consort of Lord Siva and requested her to save
them from the Demon King. To save the people
from Mahishasuran, Goddess Paarvathy fought
a battle with him for nine days and ultimately
destroyed him on the 10th day, that day is
celebrated as Vijayathasami.
During these special prayers, “Sakalakala Valli Malai” was
sung by othuvar in various melodious tunes. The devotees,
who witness this religious ritual celebration, were indeed
blessed.
During the Navarathiri season, it is a custom to have ‘Kolu’
and cultural programmes in the Hindu temples and homes.
In our temple too, cultural programmes were organised
throughout 10 days. Local artistes of various talents such
as Vocal, Violin, Veena, and Bharatha Natyam took place,
just in front of the “Vasantha Mandapam” on the stage

this festival very grandly with religious ritual
ceremonies
and
with
great
cultural
performances. Every morning SAKASRA NAMA
archanai was offered to Goddess Manonmani
Ambal. In the evenings, abishegams were
conducted for Manonmani Ambal followed
by special pooja offered to the Ambal at the
“Vasantha Mandapam” during this festival
season. The Ambal was beautifully decorated
and her attire signified the day of the celebration.

“Navarathiri Kalai Arangam”. The Temples
invited selected Indian Fine Arts schools with
the interest of promoting such arts among the
Tamils in Singapore. The Temple’s aim was to
identify and recognise the Fine Arts institutions
providing such dedicated services to the
nation and honoring them for such services.
Secondly, the Temple created an opportunity
for upcoming talented young students to
demonstrate their talent to audience.
The 10th day, that is “Thasami” is considered a
day of victory as it signifies the day when the
Demon got destroyed after the nine day battle.
Vijayathasami is a day to start new ventures in
business or education. About 20 kids started
their first education (Vidyaarambam) in our
Temple. They were taught the first alphabet
by our chief Priest. In the evening Lord
Vinayagar was taken on the horse to cut the
banana tree as to depict the killing of Demon
Mahishasuran.
Overall the entire celebration was well
celebrated in every aspect from religious
rites to the Cultural performances with record
crowds.
May Lord Sri Senpaga Vinayagar extend his
grace and blessings to all who were part of
the Navarathiri Festival.

MRS RANI SUNDARAM ON THE DEMISE OF HER BELOVED MOTHER

on the demise of her beloved grandmother. We wish the family great strength to overcome

DEMISE OF MR K SELVARAJAH
Mr K Selvarajah, a former committee member of the Singapore Ceylon Tamils’ Association
and the Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple and Representative of the Bukit Timah Area passed
away peacefully on 3rd March 2011, leaving behind his beloved family and friends.
We pray that Lord Vinayagar’s blessings will guide his family in this time of grief.
CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY OF THE LATE MR SELLAPAH THANABALASINGAM
Mr Sellapah Thanabalasingam, born on 23rd January 1923, attained eternal peace at the feet of Lord
Siva on 15th January 2010, leaving behind wife, Jeyaluckshimi d/o A. Rajah, daughters
Anuradha and Aruna, son-in-law, Darshak and his only grandson Rishav Dev. His passing
has created a big vacuum that can never be filled, among his relatives and friends, who
saw him as a “quiet reassuring constant.”
Everyone will always remember his kind and gentle ways and above all his sense of
humour. He was a devoted husband and father and a friend to all.
