Salisbury Cathedral is home to the best preserved original 1215 document, Trowbridge is one of the 25 Baron Towns, and exciting events marking this historic anniversary will take place around the county – see visitwiltshire.co.uk/magnacarta for details. Wiltshire is an enchanted place where you feel close to the earth and the ever-changing big skies. Renowned for its iconic white horses carved into the rolling chalk downs, almost half of our breathtaking landscape falls within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and there are numerous ways to enjoy this quintessentially English countryside, from walking, cycling and horse-riding to fishing, golf, canal boat trips and more. With over 10,000 years of history Wiltshire has more than its fair share of amazing attractions. On the ‘must see’ list alongside the medieval city of Salisbury with its magnificent cathedral are the Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Site, Longleat Safari & Adventure Park and the National Trust’s garden at Stourhead. Other ‘big names’ include the stately homes and gardens at Bowood and Wilton, and modern-day attractions such as Castle Combe motor racing circuit, Salisbury Racecourse and Wiltshire Music Centre. Who could have imagined that eight centuries later this ‘great charter’ would still be helping to shape the law in countries around the world. Step inside the Chapter House at Salisbury’s magnificent Gothic cathedral and you can see for yourself the best preserved of only four remaining original 1215 Magna Carta manuscripts, displayed in a spectacular medieval setting. A major exhibition opening in March 2015 will explain the historic context behind Magna Carta and show how it remains as relevant as ever today. Trowbridge, Wiltshire’s county town, is also linked to Magna Carta as it was the headquarters of Henry de Bohun, one of only two barons from the West Country. He is pictured in a stained glass window at St James’ Church, holding a copy of the Charter. A wide range of Magna Carta themed events will take place in Salisbury, Trowbridge and Wiltshire during the course of 2015. These include contemporary art installations, a Barons’ Trail, musical performances, specially commissioned theatre, family activities, a flower festival and a medieval Charter Fayre. 4 Magna Carta Events: Ageas Salisbury International Arts Festival Wednesday 27-Saturday 30 May: Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre presents King John Salisbury March-September (selected dates): Salisbury City Guides’ Magna Carta Walks Mid June-Early September: Barons’ Trail Salisbury Cathedral Opens March: Magna Carta Exhibition June-September: Enlightenment and The Power of Words – interactive lighting projections Saturday 13-Sunday 14 June: Gala Weekend Wednesday 15-Saturday 18 July: Southern Cathedrals’ Festival Tuesday 15-Sunday 20 September: ‘Magna Flora’ Flower Festival Salisbury Playhouse Saturday 20 & Sunday 21 June: Members of Stage ’65, Salisbury Playhouse’s youth theatre, will perform a new, specially written play at Salisbury Cathedral exploring the themes of Magna Carta. But history in Wiltshire is not just ancient; here you can wander through time. The Romans, Normans and Saxons have all left their mark and medieval Salisbury Cathedral is home to the charter which helped shape the law in England and beyond – Magna Carta. Elsewhere you can visit manor houses, gardens, castles and churches; enjoy close encounters with animals of all shapes and sizes; take advantage of discounts at designer and factory outlets; unearth the secrets of the past at one of our many museums; or enjoy modern-day attractions such as motor and horse racing. #timeforwiltshire AVEBURY AMESBURY Historic Amesbury - the Home of Stonehenge Amesbury is the town where history and Stonehenge began, the oldest continuous settlement in Britain. Our friendly historic town is the place where the traditional English technique of curing ham and bacon – the Wiltshire Cure – was invented by the Harris family. The factory is no longer here, but Calne is proud of this part of its history. For a small town Calne packs in a lot of history, from medieval times and the Industrial Revolution, through to the present day. It’s a story of drovers’ trails and coach roads, the rise and fall of canal and rail travel, woollen broadcloth and meat production. Visit our heritage quarter, concentrated around St Mary’s Church, to experience each chapter of our past. Calne has always been a town of discovery. Joseph Priestley ‘discovered’ oxygen here whilst working at nearby Bowood House, and shortly after Jan Ingenhousz built on the work of Priestley and ‘discovered’ photosynthesis. Nowadays Calne is a great place from which to discover the timeless wonders of Wiltshire. We are situated on the edge of the North Wessex Downs, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where you will find Cherhill's white horse. On our doorstep is magnificent Bowood, home to one of Capability Brown’s most splendid parks, and nearby is Avebury, part of the same World Heritage Site as iconic Stonehenge. THE RIVERSIDE With independent shops and cafés, a Heritage Centre, the delightful Castlefields Canal and River Park and Atwell-Wilson Motor Museum, Calne is a great place to take a break and parking in the town is free. Almost half of the county’s landscape falls within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, making it perfect for outdoor pursuits – at the last count we had over 8,200 paths for walkers and cyclists, as well as bridleways, rivers, lakes and canals. In Wiltshire you feel close to the land and the sky. The countryside alters with the changing seasons, connecting you not just to nature but to time itself. Sit on the downs at sunrise or sunset and see how the light changes the texture of the hills, then think of our ancestors admiring the same spectacle down the centuries. In Wiltshire you can truly touch the past. Wiltshire is blessed with an outstanding array of walks that can comfortably be accomplished within half a day, leaving ample time for a welcome pub lunch. You’ll also find plenty of challenging longer routes – tackle their entire length over several days, or cherry pick the sections that suit you best. Ramble on the Ridgeway or rumble through our market towns… stroll along the towpath of the Kennet and Avon Canal… walk in the footsteps of the ancient drovers... sturdy shoes recommended. KENNET & AVON CANAL 56 #timeforwiltshire Whether you are a seasoned expert, an enthusiastic amateur, or just starting out you’ll find plenty of cycle routes to suit your level of ability. These range from short hops to long-distance trails and include one of several National Cycle Routes and part of the National Byway. Whichever one you follow, you’ll find new stories around every corner… and there’s a range of exciting cycling events throughout the year to watch or take part in too, such as Cycle Wiltshire in May and the Wiltshire 100 and Big Wheel Bike Ride in September. Wiltshire is calming, comforting, refreshing. A weekend here will help put back what the rest of the week takes out. So at the end of a hectic few days, breathe a deep sigh of relief and head on over. A wide range of walker and cyclist-friendly accommodation can be found in the 2015 Wiltshire Stay, Discover, Explore guide, as well as on our website.
