Wednesday,-October 22, 1980 GULF ISLANDS DRIFTWOOD Sparklers spark damage Down Through the Years .With Driftwood FIVE YEARS AGO For the fourth consecutive year the Salt Spring Island Rotary Club has offered prizes for the best poster promoting the Grey Cup Breakfast. First prize of $15 has been won by Bruce Cobanli. Second prize went to Doug Anderson and third went to Brian Anderson. Islands post offices are unaffected as yet by the national postal strike. Mail carriers have settled their negotiations on representing the smaller offices, including island offices, which are not in dispute with the Canada Post Office. The opening of Volume II Bookstore took place last Saturday in the old location of Auntie Viv's. There to greet the bookwarmers were owners Kathy and Roger Coster of Duncan and Phyllis Webb, new operator at the bookstore. Gregory Knoblauch of Ganges damaged his 1974 half-ton pick-up severely but escaped injury last week. Estimated damage is between $500 and $1000. TEN YEARS AGO Lou and Mary Yellowlees were so busy picking peas in their garden last week that they didn't have time to think about how late in the year it was to be picking peas in their garden. Building permits issued by building inspectors on the Gulf Islands during the month of September amounted to a total of $194,426. This was the value of 16 permits. Three were for structures other than single-family dwellings. Another man is out of commission. I can't tell you that Art Moulton stabbed himself in the arm while cleaning a deer. He told me not to say anything about it and I wouldn't let him down. Last thing I saw of him he was trying to look backwards through a keyhole. Mebbe he can figure it out. Ladies Golf Champion and winner of the Wilson Cup, played for recently at the Salt Spring Island Golf and Country Club, was Irene Hawksworth. Runner-up was Kay Braden. FIFTEEN YEARS AGOU ' NDP Colin Cameron, MP for this federal riding, says if we are really friends of America we should prove it by telling her when she is wrong as well as when she is right. Anything less than this relationship between friends is a sham. The disconcerting thing about the new regional district being proposed for the Gulf Islands and Duncan area, organized by the department of municipal affairs, is that once the area has been selected by the department, it appears that all portions selected are in, until they fight their way out. And this could be most difficult. Premier W.A.C.Bennett officially opened the new government building and court house at Crofton Road on Saturday. He predicted great progress for the island but cautioned that good sense in Extended hours to continue Extended hours at the public library in Ganges on Wednesday evenings will continue through November despite the lack of interest shown so far. The library board met Friday and decided to continue the program for another month. If no additional use is made of the facilities on Wednesday evenings, between 7 and 9 pm, the extra opening times will be discontinued. "To date, attendance has definitely not been what might have been expected from the numerous requests for evening hours," said board spokesman Biz Stratton. Residents appear on television A CBC television program Sunday morning featured five Salt Spring Island residents. Yoga instructor Phyllis Coleman and four students from one of her classes were seen on British Columbia Sunday. Coleman was interviewed briefly by Ann Petrie, while Eilleen Duthie, Margaret Wilkinson, Linda Vickers and Sandra McNee demonstrated Yoga techniques. Ganges Harbour | Groceries Ltd. OPEN ALL DAY — EVERY DAY Top Quality Fresh Food Merchandise 12 hours a day - 7 days a week 9 am - 9 pm \ 537-2460 Page Seventeen planning is essential in order to keep the fine things of island life. Supervisor of the adult education programs for the Gulf Islands, Mrs. A.M. Brown, has managed this year to get several courses under way on the other islands. TWENTY YEARS AGO Earl Kaye shot a deer at 200 yards with a beautiful shot through the neck. However, it was his 13th shot at the beast. Read in the Friday Harbour Journal that there's a new deodorant out called "Disappear" and after you rub it on, you disappear. Nobody knows where the smell comes from. Allan Holmberg, aged 11, entered Lever Bros, soap contest of "Why I buy Lever Bros, products" and won himself two strings of pearls. The recently acquired Salt Spring Island Rod and Gun Club property, which was purchased from Vic Jackson, has been the scene of feverish activity during the past few weeks. All the work, machines and equipment used so far, valued at more than $1,000, have been donated. Young Morris Akerman saw a hawk swoop down and catch a pigeon. He grabbed his gun and fired at the rising hawk, killing both hawk and pigeon with the same shot. Morris is the boy who shot a large four-point buck this season in his own back yard. He is 13 years old . . . The Catholic Women's League held its monthly meeting in the parish hall of Our Lady of Grace Church with the president, Mrs. F. Bonar, presiding. League director Father P. Hanley opened the meeting. For sale: Caterpillar R-4, $2,000. 35 acres uncleared land, $1,000. MODERNIZE with When two boys were making sparklers in a Ganges home recently, the tray of materials caught fire. Bryan Matthews picked up the blazing tray and moved it from the chesterfield. In doing so he suffered minor burns to the hand and arm. When Salt Spring Island Fire Department arrived the house was filled with sulphurous fumes and smoke. The youngster was treated at Lady Minto Hospital and the house was damaged by smoke. iULF ISLANI iUTO SALES LTD! located on Upper Ganges Rd.. is in the process ol stocking its lot with good used cars.
