For many years, Kordes® roses were just not available in North America. Now, more and more are! The alphabetical list on last page is a summary of the dedicated rose companies who have begun to offer our newer varieties via mail order and to selected garden centers. Please contact them for further information. In this brochure you will find more information on Kordes and the splendid Kordes’ varieties. Kordes® Roses from Newflora The most beautiful Roses of the World That is the promising slogan of the rose nursery Kordes since the foundation of the family firm in 1887. W. Kordes’ Söhne is now successfully managed by the fourth generation and due to its constant investments and expansion has achieved a leading place amongst the worlds‘ important rose breeders. Rose Breeding Before introducing a new variety, its merits are carefully evaluated for such qualities as color, size, form, vase life, productivity, disease-resistance and fragrance. The W. Kordes‘ Söhne rose breeding program is one of the largest in the world. Goals of rose breeding Every year more than 100.000 flowers using over 3.000 different combinations are hand pollinated at the Kordes nursery. The seeds are harvested and planted and yield more than half a million seedlings. From this multitude of new roses, several thousand selections receive further evaluation and trialing. • Disease resistance (against fungal diseases such as black spot, powdery and downy mildew) For garden roses, this trialing for disease resistance, fragrance, flowering and vigor usually takes a minimum of seven years. Yearly, for each of the classifications, only 5 to 7 new varieties meet the high standards for being selected for introduction. The vision A rising environmental consciousness towards greater sustainability led to a new focus at the breeding department of W. Kordes’ Söhne in the late 80ies. Innovation, motivation and modern research methods enabled KORDES to establish a new breeding line after a short period. This vision is the basis of KORDES continued success. The trail fields of today show a multitude of very healthy roses which are grown without any application of chemicals. These new collections meet the demand for floriferous, colorful rose varieties with excellent disease-resistance: • Winter hardiness • Flowering qualities such as abundance of flowers, period of flowering, self-cleaning, rain resistance, colors, shapes and fragrance • Growth habit, height, and branching of the plant • Suitability as cut rose • Suitability to be grown from cuttings ™ • Suitability for use in containers ADR-Label The breeding efforts of KORDES are confirmed by the ADR (Allgemeine Deutsche Rosenneuheitenprüfung), which is one of the most severe trials for rose novelties world wide. Independent examiners evaluate new varieties in 11 trial stations situated throughout Germany. Qualities such as resistance against disease, winter-hardiness, abundance of flowers, flower form, fragrance and growth habit are scored. No plant protection sprays are used during the 3 year evaluations. The ADR-designation is one of the highest awards a rose variety can attain. Of 102 rose varieties which have received the ADR designation since the year 2000, 42 roses are bred by KORDES. 82 ADR-Rosen ADR – the name ADR stands for Allgemeine Deutsche Rosenneuheitenprüfung, where new rose varieties are rigorously tested without sprays for three years in eleven locations throughout Germany. Only varieties that have demonstrated excellent disease resistance and great garden performance can receive the ADR designation. The good health of ADR designated roses translates to care free roses for consumers and commercial landscaping purposes. ADR - the goals The goal of the ADR program is simple – give gardeners care free roses to enjoy. In addition to testing new rose varieties for disease resistance under the challenging Northern European climate; the ADR-competition additionally evaluates such qualities as winter-hardiness, abundance of bloom, flower color, flower form, fragrance, plant vigor, resistance to pests, and growth habit. However, the resistance to diseases is the most important criteria evaluated. Unlike most trial programs worldwide, no sprays are used in the ADR trials. Since the beginning of the ADR program over sixty years ago, more than 1500 varieties from various rose breeders around the world have been submitted and evaluated. To date, only 144 varieties have been decorated with the ADR-label. Of the total, the Kordes® rose breeding program has won more ADR certificates than any other breeder. ADR - the institution The ADR evaluations are the result of collaboration between independent gardens, the German Nursery Growers Association, the German Plant Breeder’s Rights office, and rose breeders. The innovation and professionalism of the program has earned respect worldwide, and perhaps the ‘no spray’ model will become the standard for programs everywhere. Kordes’ Söhne Located in Elmshorn, a small town north of Hamburg, Germany, the original rose nursery W. KORDES’ SÖHNE was founded in 1887 by Wilhelm Kordes I at the age of 22 years old. Initially, the nursery focused on production of rose plants, however Wilhelm Kordes I was known as a leading rose expert of his time and collected roses from many sources for propagation. The company prospered and in 1918 relocated to an old farm in Sparrieshoop, where it continues today. The second generation of the family, Wilhelm II and Hermann Kordes began working alongside their father. The head office at Sparrieshoop While his brother Hermann focused on marketing and production, Wilhelm II began a program to breed new rose varieties in 1920. For example, ’Crimson Glory’ (1935) was one of a number of worldwide successes. The collaboration of the two brothers resulted in the continued expansion of the production until it reached over one million plants yearly in the late 1930’s. During the 1950’s and 1960’s the company continued to expand with new greenhouses, modern cold storage facilities, and increasing production of garden roses. During the sixties, when the 3rd generation in person of Reimer Kordes, Hermann Kordes II, and Werner Kordes began management of the company, plant production reached a peak of more than 4 million roses a year – and W. Kordes’ Söhne was one of the leading rose nurseries in Europe. Wilhelm Kordes II (1891-1976) - the father of rose breeding at Kordes Widely known roses developed by Kordes during this period include: ’Schneewittchen® (Iceberg)’ (1958), ’Lilli Marleen®’ (1959) , ’Sympathie’ (1964) , ’Königin der Rosen’ (Color Wonder) (1964) and ’Westerland®’ (1969). Aerial view KORDES 1957 The baptism of a rose is always an exciting event for the company: In 1979 a yellow Hybrid Tea rose was baptized with the name of Helmut Schmidt, the Federal German Chancellor at this time with much fanfare. Meanwhile, a breeding program of greenhouse cut rose varieties was initiated at the company. The legendary ‘Mercedes’, introduced in 1974 brought KORDES into a leading position on international cut rose market. During this period, the establishment of plant breeder’s rights helped breeders insure their returns from breeding programs. Baptisme of the rose ’Helmut Schmidt’ 1979 44 History of Kordes Roses With the well-known varieties as ’Friesia’ (Sunsprite) (1973) and ’Rosarium Uetersen’ (1977) the success of the traditional company KORDES was going on in the 70ies. In the 80’s roses were very popular in public landscaping and KORDES’ varieties like ’Sommerwind’ (1985) and ’Palmengarten Frankfurt’ (1988) became outstanding varieties. Head office 2006 The 4th generation of the Kordes’ family; Wilhelm Kordes III, Bernd Helms-Kordes, and Tim-Hermann Kordes began management of the company in 1988. Currently, John Kordes of the 5th generation is working in the company to gain experience. KORDES is rich in tradition and so the success of their fathers and grandfathers continues with the sons. The new rose assortments of the Fairy Tale™, Vigorosa® and Climbing Max® collections have become established successes in the market. Tim-Hermann and Wiebke Kordes, Bernd Helms-Kordes and Margarita, Wilhelm and Ute Kordes Currently, the company employs 150 people for production, sales, and new variety development. Annually, more than 2 million garden rose bushes are grown and sold at the main facility in Sparrieshoop. Development of new garden rose varieties is focussed on disease resistance to limit the need for pesticides. Breeding and selection of new varieties takes place in over 2 ha (5 acres) of greenhouses and 60 ha (150 acres) outdoors. The actual production of garden rose bushes occurs on 60 ha and is done by Kordes’ itself and other local nurseries. Garden roses are not only sold in Germany but worldwide. Aerial view KORDES 2005 For trials and introduction of new cut rose varieties the branch company ‘Interrose’ was founded in 1974 in The Netherlands. The subsidiary ‘Kordes Roses International’ is specialised in the production of young plants for cut rose production. In response to the demands of the growing rose industry KORDES expanded its testing of cut rose varieties to the African continent by founding ‘Kordes Roses East Africa’ in Kenya. Since 2005 the company ‘Kreative Roses’ produces cut roses on a production area of 16 ha. Agencies in more than 30 countries around the world support the marketing and the introduction of new rose varieties.
