I
t’s Jeremy’s first visit to The
Children’s Center, and he’s
here with his mother for a mental health assessment. When
I go out to the waiting room I
see him precariously balancing
on his tiptoes along the edge of
a bench that surrounds the play
area. When I call out his name
he looks up with bright eyes and
a huge grin as he jumps down
and begins to race ahead of me
toward my office. His mother
quickly gathers their belongings

and is struggling to catch up with

us. As we arrive at my door she
frantically apologizes for his behavior and can barely get inside of the office before Jeremy begins to
tear the toys off of the shelf. In the time it has taken his mother to
take a seat he has literally dumped every single toy into a massive pile
on the floor.
“You can see why we’re here!” she says as her eyes fill with tears. “I’m
really not sure I can handle it anymore.” She struggles to contain her
emotions as she shares a story about their trip to a grocery store just the
week before. “He wanted me to buy him a treat,” she says while trying
to contain her profound sadness. “And when I told him that we didn’t
have enough money he exploded into a rage and ran down the aisles
spilling as many cans and boxes on to the floor as he could reach before
I could grab him. Once I caught him he began to scream at me to let
go of him and kicked and bit me ferociously until I somehow got him
out to the car and buckled him in to his seat.” She added, “It took every
ounce of strength inside of me to keep my cool and not hurt him. I was
furious and so embarrassed that my child could do such a thing. I just
don’t know why he behaves this way. Every single day is one battle after
another.”
As we explored further, Jeremy’s mother talked about her utter
exhaustion. She was not only profoundly saddened by his out of control
behavior, but added that Jeremy’s sleep issues were disrupting the entire
family. It took hours to settle him down for bed and just as she finally
got to bed herself Jeremy was up again, demanding something to eat,
and refusing to go back to sleep until his needs were satisfied.

Jeremy’s mother calmed as we
talked about his behavior problems
and how, as horrible as they seemed,
we were fully equipped to manage
little boys like him at The Children’s
Center. I explained to her that by
enrolling Jeremy in our Therapeutic
Preschool Program we would be able
to provide him with 15 hours of
treatment each week for as long as it
took for him to develop better selfcontrol. I reassured her that, along
with family therapy sessions each
month I was confident that we could
restore his behavior at home and
help them feel like a family again.
As I provided her with reassurance that her little boy would be
okay she began to cry. After a few
moments she gathered herself saying that she was relieved but did not
know how she could possibly afford
the therapy. Her family had just
worked their way off of Medicaid
six months prior and, though working full time, she was struggling to
pay off mountains of debt.
She dissolved in tears when I
explained that we live in a most generous community and our donors
reach deep into their pockets every
year in order to insure that children
like Jeremy would be able to receive
therapy at The Children’s Center.
As a result we were able to provide therapy for her at a rate based
upon her ability to pay. And now,
six months later, Jeremy is sleeping soundly, and though he is still a
rambunctious little boy, his mother
is learning to effectively manage
him at home. But we did not do it
alone. Our deepest thanks goes out
to you, our donors and friends, who
help make it all possible.
Trauma Summit with Lt. Governor Greg Bell
T
he Children’s Center was honored to sponsor, in partnership
with Primary Children’s Medical
Center a summit titled: Community Violence: Developing Statewide
System of Trauma Informed Care
for Families and Young Children in
conjunction with the office of Lieutenant Governor Greg Bell. In the
announcement for the Summit, the
Lt. Governor wrote: “This summit is
being held in response to my grave concern about random acts of violence in
communities across our country. Research has shown that the root cause of
such acts is often based in unresolved
early childhood trauma. This summit
will bring together private and public sector representatives to discuss how
to reduce violence and trauma and
ensure that children suffering from
trauma get the help they need. A distinguished panel of presenters will provide essential information to initiate
discussion and steps necessary to help
families and children in our state suffering from trauma.”
We were honored to be joined in
Internet services donated by XMission
our effort by Edward Clark, M.D.,
Medical Director of Primary Children’s Medical Center, Brent Platt,
Director, Division of Child and
Family Services, Anne Burkholder,
CEO YWCA, Karen Crompton,
President and CEO Voices for Utah
Children, Laura Bennett Murphy,
Ph.D, Professor of Psychology,
Westminster College, The Honorable Judge Sharon McCully, S.J.
Quinney Law School, and Julie
Bradshaw, LCSW, Director, Center
for Safe and Healthy Families. The
panelists delivered a clear and urgent call to the participants regarding the pressing need for all private
and public agencies to join together
to develop evidence based care for
families with traumatized children
across the state of Utah. This includes families struggling with domestic violence, foster children who
have suffered abuse and neglect, and
refugee families who have experienced extraordinary trauma in their
country of origin and while immigrating to the United States.
A follow up survey to our participants at the conclusion of the
Summit found that the vast majority wanted more information and
training by The Children’s Center
to help them develop trauma services in their own agencies. Over
the coming year our staff will be
working closely with state agencies
and private providers to insure that
families suffering from trauma can
avail themselves of the highest standard of care. The Children’s Center
is honored to be a member of the
National Child Traumatic Stress
Network that enables us to carry
forward this critical work on behalf
of the children in our state.

Kearns Center Gets a Makeover
C
hildren and staff at the Kearns
Center are now enjoying the
benefits of having a newer, fresher
and brighter environment. During
the months of March and April, all
therapeutic preschool classrooms
in the main building underwent a
much needed renovation. It had been
almost 20 years since the building
was last remodeled. Classrooms have
now been drastically transformed
thanks to generous donations from
The Marvyn L. Brenner Foundation
and Big-D Construction Corp.
The renovation process took
an average of five weeks. New cupboards, floor tiles, sinks, carpet and
bathrooms were some of the most
significant changes done within
each classroom. These updates create a warmer and more organized
environment, and also help children
better focus on class activities for
distractions are properly now stored
away. Dated and nonfunctional water tables have also been removed
from classrooms; now children have
a lot more space to play around during inside playtime.
Director, Nancy Coyne Baird, is

Bennion Jewelers
O
n February 21 ladies were “wearing their gems to
support ours” at The Children’s Center’s Annual
Champagne Reception and Luncheon sponsored by SelectHealth. The theme this year focused on jewelry and
over 2,000 pieces were generously donated by members
of the community. The guests enjoyed shopping through
tables and tables of fine jewelry, estate jewelry, antiques,
treasures from around the world, children’s pieces and
more. They also had a chance to pamper themselves with
complementary hand massages by La Mer and perfume
samples by Jo Malone.
Following a fantastic shopping frenzy, guests sat down to
a delicious meal while hearing a
mother talk about how The Children’s Center helped her family
when her son attended over 40
years ago and delighted with her
as she told of his progress in life
and where he is now. There wasn’t a dry eye in the audience. Elisé Allred, Manager of the Downtown Lanny
Barnard Gallery, concluded the afternoon with a presentation about jewelry and shared her expertise with “An
Inside Look at What’s Trending.”

many in kind sponsors whose generous gifts of everything from jewelry expertise to flowers,

The best part of the afternoon however, was the generous outpouring of support by all in attendance to not
only meet, but exceed a $20,000 matching grant provided by the Jeffrey S. and Helen H. Cardon Foundation.
In all, over $66,000 was raised to help the little gems at
The Children’s Center receive the help and services they
need to shine.

Holiday Season Gratitude
E
very year, the holiday season tends to bring out the
most generous and loving side of us. We become
more aware of the various needs in our community, and
strive to help alleviate them. Last Christmas, various
organizations, families and individuals reached out to
The Children’s Center with the desire to help families
struggling to provide their children with a warm holiday
celebration. Dozens of calls quickly turned into dozens
of donations for both of our center, as well as for many
our families in most need.
Items on our wish list such as school supplies, food
items, children’s clothes, books and toys came rushing in
through our doors during December and January. This
particular time of the year is crucial when it comes to
fulfilling our centers’ needs, for it allows us to continue
serving families and children struggling with emotional
and behavioral problems.
Thanks to the numerous contributions received, we
were also able to provide assistance to families who had
almost given up on the idea of having a Christmas dinner and presents underneath the Christmas tree. As
donations were given away to these families, we received
smiles, hugs and heartfelt words of gratitude on behalf
of each donor.
We would also like to thank ATK and First American
Title for bringing the joy of Christmas to all of our therapeutic preschool classrooms. Santa Clause and his helpers personally delivered presents and stockings to the
children. Seeing their smiles (some more timid than others) as they sat on Santa’s lap and were
given a present, filled our hearts with
joy, for we know not all children get
to experience the magic of Christmas
at home.
Our community’s generosity never
ceases to impress us. Not just during
the holiday season, but throughout
the year, it is clear that the true starting point of our work is our community’s generosity. We are forever mindful of the fact that we don’t do it alone;
we simply couldn’t do it without our
community’s continuous support.
