Who Uses YesPhonics™?
The primary purpose of YesPhonics™ is to aid teachers, tutors and
homeschool parents in presenting the Orton-Spalding Method of
reading, writing and spelling. YesPhonics™ is designed to teach
K-3rd grade students, but it is also extremely effective in teaching
reluctant and remedial readers, adults, English as a second
language (ESL), and students with learning disabilities. One of

The 72 Orton phonograms are the primary codes for speaking,
spelling and reading (decoding) English. They represent the
45 sounds heard in English speech. A phonogram is a letter or
combination of letters that represents one or more single, ‘voiced’
sound/s in a word. Each phonogram’s illustration and keyword
caption is a clever memorization device. The words in the caption
depict the phonogram’s various sounds. This knowledge is vital for
fast and accurate decoding (reading) of English. Within the first 5
weeks of using this method, students learn 56 phonograms and
150 of the most commonly used words in the English language.
Hundreds of words and sentences can be combined from this
knowledge. Students will start reading literature of their age
interest, which helps develop a love for reading, builds confidence,
and promotes higher education.
