The competition was of a very high standard and our team lost a close game to Drummoyne Public School. The team will now progress to the State Knockouts. What every child should know. You are not alone! It is generally felt that life success, health and emotional wellbeing all have their roots in early childhood. The quality of a child's earliest environments and the availability of appropriate experiences at the right stages are crucial in shaping children's development.-AEDI It is true that some children are more resilient than others. Their nature and their temperament helps them to be mentally and DIARY DATES psychologically strong. “They get straight back up after a setback or MAY disappointment. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the first ascent of Mt Everest. A remarkable achievement! Mathematical Olympiads A number of our more able mathematicians in year 6 participate in the Mathematical Olympiads Program (Mops). The program comprises five monthly Olympiads of 5 problem solving activities each Olympiad. The following students performed well at our first Olympiad held last Friday. Tom Kelsey scored a perfect 5 and Riley O’Sullivan, Lincoln Zanon, Taylah Gross, Johnny Riley and Gus Geyer achieved 4 out of 5. The questions are a little tricky and require some concentration and trial and error to arrive at a solution. The students meet with me fortnightly for 45 minutes do develop strategies to assist them with the upcoming Olympiads. All participants receive a certificate of participation at the completion of the program. This is an Australia wide program and students are eligible for awards if they score in the top 25% or top 10%. Photographs Order forms are available from the school office for students wishing to order Summer PSSA team photographs taken in term 1. The team photographs are on display in an album located in the school office. The cost per photograph is $18.00. Orders need to be finalised by Friday 31st May. School Uniform Thank you to the vast majority of families who consistently support our uniform policy. This is most appreciated. Brian O’Rourke Year 6 Cake Stall Friday 31st May From 2.45pm Cakes, Jelly, Soft drink 50 cents - $2 ********************************* All money $$$$ raised goes directly back to Year 6 Year 6 parents: Please drop off cakes and other baked goodies to the canteen from 8.45am, or bring in the afternoon. (Please note we have NO COLD STORAGE) *************************************** We also need helpers from Year 6 in the afternoon AFL The Paul Kelly Cup is the largest AFL primary school competition in New South Wales and the ACT and is open to students in Years 5 and 6. After convincingly winning the Manly Zone Grand Final at the end of term 1, the Harbord boys teams progressed to the Sydney Finals which was played at Centennial Park on Monday 27th May 2013. In some very close and tough matches, the boys ended up at the top of their pool and progressed to the semi-finals after defeating Maroubra Junction, Christian Brothers Lewisham and Cherrybrook. In the semi-final the boys played their best game of the day, winning easily against Oxford Fall Grammar 52-10. The grand final came down to Newington and Harbord Public with a close game resulting in Newington winning 30-27. Both Newington and Harbord Public will now progress and represent the Sydney Region in the State Final to be played later this term. This is a fantastic effort by the boys considering the majority of them did not play AFL until this competition and we have now made it down to the final 8 out of 800 NSW/ACT schools entered in this competition. On the day, the team were fantastic ambassadors for our school, displaying excellent behaviour and sportsmanship and were a pleasure to coach. I would like to extend a big thank you to the parents that helped drive the students to and from the grounds as well as those parents that came to support the team. Mr Addicott Kindergarten Kindi Farm Visit CAMP WOLSTONCROFT On Monday, Year 5 arrived at Point Wolstoncroft Camp. When we got there, we got sorted into activity groups and cabins. I was in Green Activity Group and in a cabin with Joe, Alec and Seb. Our lodge was called Geebung. We had a great lunch – sandwiches. I had salami, cucumber, pineapple, beetroot and corn in my sandwich. Then we went to our cabins, unloaded our bags and got ready for our first activity. For our activity, we had bike riding and archery. In bike riding, we rode BMX bikes out to the point on a rocky 2km dirt path. I had a rock throwing contest with Lockie. Archery was quite fun. I used a compound metal bow. FLUNK! That’s my arrow getting stuck in the 10. We couldn’t pull it out for a minute! Back in our cabin, we chatted for a while, waiting for Mr Addicott to call us for dinner. It was Chicken Schnitzel for dinner. It was delicious! The dessert! It was great! Wait …. I didn’t have any. Some people took seconds. I just had vanilla ice cream. Then we did a mini Olympics. We went back to our cabin to catch some zzzz’s. On Tuesday, it was early wake up day. We had bacon and eggs, and duty. In the morning we paddled in a freezing canoe to a tiny beach. Lunch was wraps. Pretty much the same as yesterday. In the afternoon we had rock climbing. I didn’t make it to the top at all, but I made it to at least ¾ of the way up. Then dinner again. It was a beef roast . Ok! Time to get to the county fair. It was the best of all. My group somehow got the fruit stall. It was BAD! No one wanted fruit when cakes and ice cream was on sale. Drinks, food, costumes, massages, games and A CASINO! On our final day, we woke up with a room inspection awaiting us. We didn’t win the room inspection competition. We packed up our stuff and got ready for a great breakfast. Pancakes and Maple Syrup. YUM!! Then our final activity got underway. Low Ropes. I was expecting it to be higher than 30cm off the ground. I’d have rather done the Giant Swing. Anyway, I put my jumper on backwards and put the hood over my face. Then I did it BACKWARDS! And BLINDFOLDED! Then it was lunch again. Another high school had turned up and it was very busy. Sausages in a roll with salad for lunch. It was good. Year 5 got slowly back on to the coaches ready for the long trip back to school. Camp was a great experience and it was good to be away from home. I have 3 words to say. It …… was ….. awesome! By Finn Harte 5W SPELLATHON NEWS: For some great ideas to assist with learning Spelling words go to: There are a range of worksheets and games (as pdfs) which you can download for Kindergarten and early learners as well as for Primary students. There is a ‘Spelling Bee’ game included where you can record your own Spellathon list words to practice. Here are some additional suggestions for learning Spelling list words: Look, cover, write, check Meaning- talk about the meaning of each word and say it in a sentence. Creating Words - use play dough, pipe cleaners or lego to form letters to spell out each word. Paint It! - use a paintbrush or finger and paint to spell words. Type It! - type spelling words on the computer/ipad/lap top. Rainbow Words - spell words using different coloured markers or crayons for each letter. Word Games -Make two copies of your list on flashcards, use the cards to play snap, concentration or fish. Trace - have fun and let kids trace their words on your back or palm. Have them focus on properly forming each letter so you can feel it being drawn. Swap over. Chalk (or Paint or water) - go outside and spell your words using chalk, paint or water on the driveway. Just taking the spelling practice outside makes it more fun for kids. Magnetic letters/Letter Tiles - spell words using letter tiles Scrabble Spelling - use scrabble pieces to build words. For some sneaky math fun have child total the amount for each word. Partner Spell - take turns adding a letter to spell each word. For example, for the word FUN - child starts by saying the letter F, parents adds letter U and child then completes word by adding the letter N. Record - use a phone, ipad or ipod to record child(ren) orally spelling words. Make a Video - use a video camera, phone, ipad or ipod to take some quick video of your child spelling the target words. Microphone - Spell words into a microphone. There is just something fun about hearing yourself loud and magnified. Bounce a Ball - bounce a ball as you spell words - 1 bounce per letter. Which is Correct? Write words on a whiteboard and include misspelled words. Have child identify the correctly spelled words. Wordsearch - you can visit sites like PuzzleMaker , type in your child's spelling list and create a word search that you can print. Or children can make their own find-a-word. Mystery Letters - write words with missing letters. Child must figure out which mystery letters are missing in order to complete words. Newspaper search - Choose a page of newspaper and find as many list words as you can on the page and highlight them. One Minute Wonders –See how many times your child can write one particular word in a minute. Words Within – Find smaller words within the spelling words.
