Mrs. Spataro: In Religion, the grade 6s and 9s have started work on their Service
Project. We are exploring different world and school issues and their global
context connections. Coming up, they will break into groups and start the process
of planning out what issue they would like to tackle and how they are going to do
it.

In drama, we have been working with the Young Actors Project, which sends out a
facilitator to run 3 workshops for the students in
Drama. This past week, the students worked with
masks. The students were working with masks
and learned how masks are used in drama – both
in the past and today. By incorporating masks
into theatre games, they were able to focus on
using their bodies to communicate and tell a story.
Grade One’s
are learning
to say hello in
many
different
languages!

Maker Space and IB Commons:
Much to our excitement St. Clement IB World school has
recently undergone major renovations in the IB learning
commons. Our goal at the school was to make a space where
design thinking and inquiry could take place using a variety of
materials. The first goal was to purchase modern furniture
through a local company http://edmonton.rgo.ca/. We ordered products from a
German manufacturer to help create unique spaces for students. Our new
learning commons now has 40 desktop computers, new seating areas, shelving
and maker spaces. With the purchase of new shelving our books are more
accessible to children at all ages. Our picture and fiction books are now our
largest collection so that we can use technology and digital texts to explore nonfiction concepts. One important new feature is our dual-language section where
students can explore books in 8 different languages.
With the incorporation of
makerspaces, students can access
materials that facilitate students
building their skills in the IB
approaches to learning. A unifying thread throughout
all PYP and MYP curriculum, approaches to learning
(ATL) provide the foundation for independent learning and encourage the
application of knowledge and skills in unfamiliar contexts. Developing and
applying these social, thinking, research, communication and self-management
skills helps students learn how to learn. In addition,
makerspaces facilitate students into thinking about
themselves as leaders through creating, building and
inquiring into real world concepts. Each week PYP
students will be engaging in a variety of makerspaces. In
the MYP students access makerspaces in their design and
art courses.

Canteen
Canteen cards are now being sold. Canteen is open to all students in
the school. The canteen cards are $10 each.
Great news! Starting October 2015, our school will be offering a small
menu of healthy choices in the canteen to offer a supplement to students’
lunches.
Grade 6 – 9 students will have access to the canteen on Monday, Tuesday
and Wednesday at lunch. In order to participate, students are required to
purchase a card for $10.00, which will allow them to receive items such as
yogurt tubes, cheese strings and granola bars.
Students can bring payment in at any time and bring it to the canteen. The
students will be responsible for their own cards. If a student loses a card it
will not be replaced. Please remind your child to treat their card like cash.
