Name our newsletter!
We are in the process of reformatting our
newsletter and this should be ready soon. As
part of updating our newsletter I would like to
give the newsletter a name and to do this we
will be holding a competition for the students
to submit a name for the newsletter. Get your
creativity going and submit a name for the
newsletter which is up to 3 words by Friday
August 17. Entries are to be dropped into the
box in the office with students name and
class. The winner will receive a $30 Myer
voucher. Good luck!
Local
Schools,
Decisions
Local
In March this year the NSW
Government announced its Local
Schools, Local Decisions educational
reform; a reform that puts students at
the centre of all our decisions.
The department has developed a new
resource allocation model (RAM) for
allocating funding in a more equitable way.
The RAM takes into account the fact that
students and school communities are not all
the same; they have different needs and will
need different levels of support. The RAM
also provides the certainty of funding for
schools to employ teachers in order to
adhere to the class sizes policy. Funding will
ensure no principal need worry about the
cost of a teacher, leaving principals to
choose teachers based on teacher quality
and skills required to best meet the needs of
their students.
Five principles have underpinned
the development of the RAM.
1. Based on students and school
need
The funding provided to schools will reflect
the characteristics of individual schools and
their students.
2. Evidence-based
The components of the model are
underpinned by the latest educational
research and NSW school and student data.
3. Moving funds to schools efficiently
and transparently
Funding will flow directly to schools and
schools will know the elements that make up
their funding allocation.
4. Certainty for schools
The model will address deficiencies in the
current allocation process and give more
certainty to schools consistent with the school
planning year.
5. Sustainable and adaptable
The model has the capacity to adapt to new
policy priorities and changing school and
student populations in the future.
The RAM has three components
1. Base school allocation
o based on school type which
includes
current
staffing
entitlement adhering to class
size policy
o site loading
o location
2. Equity Loading
o adjustments
for
low
level
disability
o loading reflects proportion of
Aboriginal students within school
o loading reflects ESL proportion
o socio-economic background
3. Targeted Individual Students
Some students require personalized and
customized support including
o high or moderate adjustments
o new arrivals / refugees
o those who require specific support
This new model of funding is being gradually
introduced into schools and Lugarno Public
School will be phased in by 2015.
Successful Transition
High School
to
Angie Wilcox is an Australian expert on
transitions in education. She has worked with
leading Australian experts including Michael
Carr-Gregg and Dr Andrew Fuller. Angie has
be secured to speak at our school specifically
to Year 5 & 6 students and parents about
effective strategies to cope with the changes
faced in secondary school.
Early arrivals
While much of the presentation talks about
high school there are a number of points in
her presentation that would be relevant to
Years 3 & 4 students and to parents of K-6
children including organisational skills,
managing homework and goal setting.
It has been noted that a number of students
have been arriving at school prior to the
commencement of supervision. Where
possible please have students arrive from
8.30am. If needed, before school care is
offered onsite at the OOSH centre which can
be contacted on 9534 6114.
Date: Tues Aug 21
Time 7-8.30pm
Venue: School Hall

For more information go to
www.mindquest.net.au
This is a reminder to parents that all notes
sent home requesting
payments
for
excursions,
incursions,
performance
rehearsals, tickets, textbooks, competitions etc
state a due date for payment. It is necessary
to have a cut off date for a variety of reasons,
including advance payments, confirmation of
numbers for buses, tickets, competition forms
etc. For the smooth running of all events, we
kindly ask parents to make payments by the
due date, as we do not want students to miss
out.
Equally important is the return of
permission notes by the due date, as this
enables teachers to confirm student
attendance and note any medical issues. The
correct money and note should be returned
to the class teacher by the due date in an
envelope marked with the student’s
name, class and what they are paying for.
Unfortunately, change cannot be given at the
office.
There are some application forms also
available in the school office. Closing date is
Friday August 17.
If there is any reason you are unable to make
payment by the due date, please contact the
school office prior to the due date.
Mufti day
Excursion / Incursion notes and most other
notes are available from the school’s
website.
Notes have sent home to families of Year 5 &
6 students
and if parents with children in other years are
interested, please contact your class teacher
for a note as well. Spare notes are available
in the office.
Mindquest 2012
The Mindquest program is to be held at St
George Girls HS on Saturday & Sunday, 15
& 16 September. Mindquest will be offering
37 exciting courses for gifted and talented
students, years 1-6. This fast paced
challenging program is designed to enrich
and extend students of similar interests and
abilities.
Next Wednesday, August 8, the P&C will be
holding a Mufti Day. Students will be asked to
contribute a gold coin. Monies raised will be
used to buy prizes for the P&C Trivia Night to
be held on Saturday August 18. Students are
asked to wear sensible closed in shoes, no
ugg boots allowed.

If you have a mathematical problem that
needs to be solved, just ask Lugarno Public
School’s Adam F to help. The year 6 student
recently placed first in the Georges River
District of the NSW Department of
Education’s
‘Number
Crunchers
Competition’.
The competition requires
students in years 5,6 and 7 to verbally
answer questions in multiplication, addition,
subtraction and division within 10 seconds.
His win qualified him to compete in the
Sydney Region competition where he placed
in the top four. These four finalists are now
lucky enough to be heading off to China to
attend the ‘Expanding Horizons Tour’. The
tour offers children the experience to visit and
work alongside Chinese children and
exchange mathematical ability in a friendly
competition. The tour runs over 10 days and
sees
competition in
the areas of
mathematics,
performing
arts,
sports,
hospitality, technology/robotics, visual arts
and public speaking/debating.
“Adam has always been quick with numbers”
says his father Bob “but we didn’t realise how
capable he was until the ‘Number Crunchers’
competition.
Adam hasn’t seriously thought about a career
path as yet, however, he would consider
becoming a doctor, or a scientist based in
Antarctica.
In the meantime, Adam will
continue with his other hobbies of swimming,
tennis and reading, and of course he’ll keep
crunching those numbers. Good luck in
China Adam!
