Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Our new Electronic Newsletter starts soon, in the meantime we need to
collect all email addresses from parents. (See info Page 2)
TERM 2 HAS COMMENCED WITH A GREAT START! The staff have
worked hard to ensure that our Years 3, 5 and 7 students are well prepared for
the NAPLAN assessments (National Literacy and Numeracy tests) being held
next week. We are very proud of the efforts of the children and look forward
to finding out the results of these important assessments later in the year. The
students involved will be undertaking tests in Spelling and Grammar, Writing,
Reading and Numeracy, from Tuesday May 14th to Thursday May 16th. There is
also a “catch-up day” on Friday for students who may have been absent. Whilst
we value and carefully analyse the results, we are also well aware that this is
only one set of tests, taken on 3 days of the year, and is not the only way that
we make judgements about students’ progress. There are many other varied
strategies that we use to ensure a child is improving in their learning. Parents of
all Year 3, 5 and 7 students have received information with more details about
the tests.
DANGER NEAR THE SCHOOL CROSSING!! Many staff and parents
have expressed much concern regarding the way that traffic banks up near the
school crossing, waiting to enter the pick-up / drop off zone. This is a safety
worry for many people. If coming from Black’s Rd, please do not create a
queue on Murray’s Hill Road. The safest method is to continue driving if the
entrance to the pick up zone is not clear enough to enter, then do a u-turn past
the school and come back to wait in the right hand lane queue on Murray’s Hill
Road. The local council has been informed of this matter and police and council
officers may book people blocking the road inappropriately. Please help us to
create safer conditions for picking up your child and everyone else’s
child!
THE FUN WALKATHON WAS A MAJOR SUCCESS TODAY! We
are still waiting to find out the amount raised, however, the children had a lot of
fun and assisted us to raise much needed funds for the school. A sincere thank
you for the wonderful donations received. Prizes will be ordered and presented
to students in the near future.
EXCITING CANTEEN NEWS! We completed Term 1 in the black! Yes!
That is a terrific effort from Sue and Sue. Thanks to families for their support.
This term we have an exciting new menu with Special Combo Meals being a
feature. The new menu will go home early next week.
Kind regards,
Kathy Terrell
NEW ELECTRONIC
NEWSLETTER emails
LOST PROPERTY
Children often misplace their belongings at school. The
staff in the front office has made a commitment to
reunite lost property with its owner immediately but
this can only happen if it is named. Unnamed property
sits in a container in the front office with no chance of
being reunited with its rightful owner. At the end of
the school term it is disposed of to make way for more.
Please name your children’s belongings and check
regularly that they have not accidentally brought
someone else’s jumper home!
We are in the final stages of updating our school
newsletter to a magazine style format, which aims to
more effectively and efficiently inform our school
community of current news & information as well as to
promote and celebrate our wonderful learning
programs.
The new look school newsletter will be available online
through our school website in a PDF format for parents
to download and view.
As a starting point we would like to ensure all parents
and carers are accessing the school newsletter via an
email sent from school on the day the newsletter is
published. This occurs on a fortnightly basis.
We request all parents and carers to visit the home
page of our school website - www.craigburn.sa.edu.au
and click on the ‘subscribe to newsletter’ link, located
on the left side bar under ‘Quick Links’. This link will
take you to a ‘Google Form’ where you will be able to
enter your name and the email address you would like
to receive the newsletter notification from. After
entering your details, click submit.
Occasionally,
there
may
some
attachments
accompanying the newsletter. These will also be in a
PDF format for you to download and view. From time
to time these will be sent home as a hard copy.
Printed copies will be available upon request. Please
contact the office. We appreciate your support in this
endeavour and are confident that families will benefit
from the new system.
Regards, Paul Luke - Deputy Principal

The school community wishes to acknowledge the
generous support by all sponsors that enabled us to
provide free fruit to all children participating on the day.
The sponsors include Coles and Woolworths from the
Hub Shopping Centre and the very generous donation
of four boxes of pears by the local Magarey Orchard in
Coromandel Valley who have been growing pears and
apples among other things since 1909. Magareys are
open to the public selling fruit in season Mon, Weds-Fri
from 9.30-12.20 and 1.20-4.30 daily at very low prices,
Magarey Rd , Coromandel Valley (next to Frank Smith's
Reserve). The children loved making apple and pear
slinky's and the fresh fruit provided a healthy and fun
snack on a warm and energetic day!

the hall. Our Year 4 team has 7 sporty boys and only
lost one game last term, they continue to train on
Friday lunchtimes. The Year 5 team has 11 players and
this team is enjoying their basketball and training on a
Tuesday lunchtime. Our Year 6/7 team are training in
the hall on Mondays and coming together as a great
little team (getting ready for SAPSASA).

SOCCER Season Starts!
So after weeks of planning and organising soccer
training has started this week with 88 children
registered to play. We have 2 Senior teams, an Under
10, Under 9, Under 8 team and our very own Aliens
team for the 21 very keen youngest members of our
community. Thanks to all those parents and
grandparents who have taken on coaching and managing
roles - without you the teams would not go ahead.
However I am now in need of someone, or small group
of people, to take charge of the canteen facility for our
home games. This entails purchasing the drinks and
lollies to sell, making tea and coffee and taking money
on the day. It is a job that has been done by older
siblings in the past so if anyone can offer to take on this
role please email me or contact the school. The
canteen is a major fund raiser for the soccer teams and
allows us to purchase team shirts, equipment and
trophies for the end of the season. I am happy to give
more details if needed.
SAPSASA - DIVING
On Friday 22nd March, Luke and Rhianna Marshall
represented our school in the 2013 SAPSASA Diving
Championships held at the South Australian Aquatic &
Leisure Centre Marion. Many primary schools were
represented with a high level of competition. Craigburn
dominated the competition with Luke finishing 1st in the
boys 3m springboard and 5m platform events and 2nd in
the 1m springboard event. Rhianna finished 1st in the
girls 1m & 3m springboard events and 1st in the girls 5m
platform event. Go Craigburn!
Just to clear up some confusion regarding how teams
are selected please find below an explanation:Team Selection and Registration
The selection process for soccer teams is based on
guidelines as set out in the Craigburn Sports Policy and
the registration requirements of the Southern Districts
Junior Soccer Association (SDJSA) who coordinate and
manage the school competition.
Essentially the SDJSA stipulate that teams are formed
based on age levels within a calendar year and not
school-based year level groupings. This means that team
selection will change from year to year where children
will have the opportunity to play with different players.
As you would appreciate it is highly unlikely that a team
will be exactly the same from one year to the next
because of the SDJSA registration requirements. We
endeavour to create a balanced selection of teams from
the Seniors right down to the Under 8s, however, we
are not able to guarantee the placement of children
based on individual requests. We ask that parents are
able to explain this to their child.
The registration and selection of teams is a complex
process and one that requires the support of parents
and children.
Barbara Heaton - Soccer Coordinator 2013
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Luke & Rhianna travelled to Perth at Easter to compete
in the 2013 Australian Age Diving Championship.
Athletes from all over Australia competed in their
respective age divisions in a strong competition run to
international standards. In only his first Nationals Luke
finished 3rd in the under 11 boys 1m springboard and
5m platform events, and 5th in the 3m springboard event
to finish 3rd overall. Rhianna won the 12/13 girls 3m
synchronised and 1m springboard events and finished
2nd in the 3m springboard and 5m platform events to
finish in 1st place overall and was awarded “Girls 12/13
Yrs Diver of the Year”. Congratulations Luke & Rhianna
on an excellent performance!
BASKETBALL
We have started Term 2 of basketball and we would
like to welcome our new Year 2/3 team, this team
consists of 12 players and we have both girls and boys
playing. The team is new to basketball and they have
got a lot to learn, trainings are on a Friday lunchtime in

SCHOOL FOOTBALL Update
Last term we invited parents to express and interest for
their child to play football for Craigburn in
2013. Unfortunately, due to the small amount of
interest within our school community we are not able
to field any teams, which has been the case over the last
few
years. The
Craigburn
Sports
Committee
acknowledges that opportunities exist for students to
participate in community / club based football
programs.
Craigburn does however run an AUSKICK program for
young children which is run on Sunday mornings at the
school.
CANTEEN
CRAIGBURN CAFE
Welcome back! We hope you all had an enjoyable
holiday and are looking forward to Term 2.
We would like to take this opportunity and express our
thanks to ALL the volunteers including students who
made Sports Day such an enjoyable and successful day.
It is such a big day not only for the school but also the
canteen and in these tough economical times the school
community support is vital to keep the canteen up and
running so we can provide this service to the school.
Many thanks to Tracy Marshall and Joanne Waring who
filled in while Sue L was away.
Free tickets
Dave and Bree Hodgson, the AUSKICK managers have
10 free adult passes (kids are free) to the state football
(AFL) game, South Australia vs NEAFL at Mazda
stadium at 2.10pm this Saturday 11th of May. If you are
interested please phone the school and we will pass the
message on or email [email protected].
This year we not only had our popular BBQ but we also
sold Sushi and fresh Wraps, which was a great success.
Thanks to Annegret Lackmann and her team of workers
for organising this healthy alternative.
SAPSASA District Athletics
In Week 9 of last term 55 Craigburn students
participated in the Southern Heights District athletics
day at Blackwood High School. Students displayed a
positive attitude and great team spirit throughout the
day.
The cake stall had a fantastic variety to choose from and
not a crumb was left!
Special thanks to Ian and Rosie (Sue L’s mum and friend
of Sue L’s family) who did a great job of cooking 800
sausages! All our volunteers were brilliant and we
appreciate the time you gave us especially when we
know you all have children to watch and it can be
difficult at times. Once again thank you so much.

be purchased with a lunch order for only $1.00 a saving

TAKE HOME A BIG BROTHER OR BIG SISTER
Give your children the wonderful opportunity to have an
international big brother or big sister by hosting one of
our exceptional international students arriving in
Australia in July 2013 for their 3, 5 or 10 month
programs. Our international students from France,
Germany, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland,
and Spain will live as a local, attend a local secondary
school, arrive with their own spending money and
comprehensive insurance cover – all arranged by
Southern Cross Cultural Exchange. Visit us at
www.scce.com.au, email [email protected] or
call us toll free on 1800 500 501, request our
international student profiles, and capture the spirit of
family and friendship!
Festival Orchestra
Congratulations to Bailey Kuijpers and Grant Robertson
who have been selected to play Saxophone in the South
Orchestra. They will perform in 4 concerts at the
Festival Theatre in September.
Congratulations to these students who have recently
been selected to perform in the South Troupe:• Ashlyn Petty
• Chelsea Roper
• Alannah Green
• Bridgett Spurr
They have many workshops and rehearsals before their
4 performances in September at the Festival Theatre.
Drum / Guitar lessons
Greg will be returning to work in Week 4. I am aware
the email address that was given out for parents to
make contact with him is not working. I have spoken to
Greg and he has suggested that students who have
missed out on lessons will be given lessons free of
charge until that debt has equalised. At the end of
Term 2 those parents will only be invoiced for lessons
beyond what they are owed. If your child is not
continuing or you have any further concerns you may
email Greg on [email protected]
