ANNUAL Report 2015 www.sscmusic.org MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT 2 I t is my honor to report that 2015 was another phenomenal year for South Shore Conservatory. Guided by a new strategic plan, SSC served its growing constituency with outstanding and innovative programs, while laying the groundwork for a dynamic future. The board and staff have worked together throughout the year to advance the three priorities of SSC’s strategic plan, access, visibility and sustainability. Access: SSC is committed to ensuring that everyone, regardless of age, ability or socio-economic circumstances, has the opportunity to participate in our programs and activities. President Kathy Czerny, in the accompanying message, highlights several ways which SSC is increasing access through financial assistance, innovative programming, and outreach to underserved populations. Visibility: SSC began as a community school for the arts and that continues to be its essence. Over the years, the breadth and diversity of our programming have increased in countless ways. Currently, we are the largest music conservatory in New England and the sixteenth largest in the country. In view of this expansion, we have redrafted SSC’s mission statement to more accurately encompass our programming, audience and anticipated outcomes, while adhering to the commitment to quality that has guided us throughout our history: The mission of South Shore Conservatory is to provide access to exceptional arts education and performance for the South Shore community, fostering creativity, artistic growth and well-being for individuals of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. As we prepare for the future, it is critical that we increase our visibility by communicating this mission and all that it has to offer to the communities we serve, from early-childhood education and private lessons to outreach, creative arts therapies and performance. Sustainability: Fulfilling our mission for generations to come requires financial sustainability. While SSC had a very strong financial outcome in 2015, our future requires a long-term financial blueprint. To that end, SSC has committed to Vision 2020, a $16 million comprehensive campaign that is designed to support our strategic plan with the parallel goals of achieving ambitious annual giving targets while building capital reserves to sustain our commitment to accessibility and excellence. 015 was an exciting year for South Shore Conservatory. Not only did we achieve financial success and reach new audiences with innovative programming and outreach, we have launched a plan to sustain SSC for many years to come. Providing exceptional arts education and performance has always been the bedrock of the work we do, and this happens because of the outstanding teaching artists who make up our faculty. Whether they are teaching a violin lesson within our four walls, a music and literacy program in Brockton schools, a two-week wind ensemble camp in the amphitheater, or music therapy in a memory care facility, their commitment to exceptional quality is the common bond that makes SSC exceptional. Expanding access by making the transformational power of the arts available to all, regardless of age, background, ability or financial need, is at the heart of SSC’s visionary strategic plan. This year our Community Partnership program has expanded our reach in Brockton, serving over 1000 students with ImagineARTS, a program that enlists the power of music and the arts to improve reading skills, build confidence, think creatively and develop communication abilities, all while encouraging young students maintain their sense of wonder. SSC increased access to families who face financial barriers by increasing the amount of funds available for financial aid, providing scholarships to over 400 students to fulfill their dreams of taking music lessons. Our Creative Arts Therapies Department provided the healing and developmental benefits of creative arts therapies to more than 500 people - including toddlers in early intervention programs, young adult singers in SSC Community Voices, families living in homeless shelters and children experiencing profound loss. As testament to our commitment to providing access to our programs and facilities, SSC was selected by the Massachusetts Cultural Council as one of 21 organizations statewide designated as an UP organization. UP organizations are a growing cohort of leaders and innovators who have demonstrated a commitment to learn, take action, and embrace inclusivity as a core organizational value. SSC will serve as a model and inspiration to other organizations, as we all work together to improve accessibility. Behind every one of our 3500 students there is a story to tell about the power of the arts to change lives. Because there are so many different ways to experience all SSC has to offer, it is important for us to share our stories - how a music performance moved you or engaged your child, how a teacher made a difference in your life, how volunteering provided you with a new community, how a child was transformed by tapping into his or her own creativity. It is through our stories that more people will come to know and find their way to SSC. The future looks bright for SSC, and I am confident that we will achieve the goals of Vision 2020, thanks to the dedication of our staff, faculty and trustees, and the generous support of our community. Thank you, for your continued support! All of us at SSC are profoundly grateful for the support of the many individuals, families and organizations who are listed in this report. Thank you for recognizing that the arts are a necessity, an essential part of that which connects us. We are grateful to the many people and organizations who contributed so generously to our school’s programs, scholarships and events during Fiscal Year 2015 (September 1, 2014-August 31, 2015).
