A trolley would help, in theory, to alleviate traffic congestion and help move shoppers from one end of the business corridor to the other. It would be funded by the taxes collected by the 53rd Street Special Service Area (SSA). Riders would not be charged a fee. According to a survey commissioned by the SSA, 61 percent of the 718 people who had responded to the survey by August 27 were “absolutely likely” to ride a free trolley through the business district. Another 21 percent said they were “very likely” to use the service. Only 8 percent said they were “not likely.” The SSA is planning to run a test program over Thanksgiving weekend, but the details are currently sparse. Running the trolley for ten hours in one day could cost about $830, regardless of the number of passengers it picks up or drops off. If it were to become a regular program through the SSA, running it seven days a week would be cost prohibitive. If the Thanksgiving weekend pilot goes well a more expansive trial phase would be implemented in 2015. Forty percent of respondents said they would be likely to use a free trolley service “several times per week.” Friday would see the most riders, followed by Saturday and Sunday. The afternoon would be the most popular time of day to ride. But it needs to arrive quickly, 451 people said they would wait up to 15 minutes. Only 53 people said they would wait up to 20 minutes. The majority, 59 percent, of the respondents to the survey said they were under 40 years old. The University of Chicago Medical Center president Sharon O’Keefe told a state review board that it is in talks with other area medical providers about the South Side’s trauma care needs. At a Wednesday hearing of the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board, O’Keefe was asked to comment on the issue of trauma care on the South Side. “We are currently in discussions with actually all of the medical directors of trauma … centers, in Chicago and other facilities to both collaborate and look at what is the best possible way to organize trauma … care in Chicago to best meet the needs of the area,” O’Keefe said. “And those discussions are going on at this point in time. The board voted 6-0 with three absentees to approve allowing UCMC to add beds to the newly constructed Center for Care and Discovery (CCD), and build a medical center in suburban Orland Park. “We continually have discussions with other area health care providers about ways to improve the health of the South See TRAUMA on page 2 2 Hyde Park Herald, September 3, 2014 Exhibit explores art’s middle Back to Koz By JEFFREY BISHKU-AYKUL Staff Writer A new exhibit, “The Chicago Effect: Redefining the Middle,” opened recently at the Hyde Park Art Center, 5520 S. Cornell Ave., featuring around 20 works by 10 artists exploring the concept of the middle, as its name suggests. “This idea came about on the occasion of this year, which is the Hyde Park Art Center’s 75th anniversary,” said HPAC’s special projects manager Megha Ralapat, who cocurated the show with Director of Exhibitions Allison Peters Quinn and New York Citybased artist Christopher Ko. “We’re thinking of this anniversary, not as an end point, but as a middle place.” Drawing inspiration from the status of the art center as a mid-sized institution in the middle of its history — as well as from the art scene in Chicago — the curators considered the characteristics of the cultural middle ground. “Traditionally, in art at least, I think the TRAUMA from page 1 Teacher Ray Mungo (right) gives Kimberly Hill a Parents Handbook during Thursday night back to school program at Kozminski Elementary School 936 E. 54th St. Owen M. Lawson III Local leaders leave the state for Wy. Hyde Park pastor Larry Turpin and education activist Julie Woestehoff have moved to Wyoming. Woestehoff had been executive director of Parents United for Responsible Education since 1995. The group, which played a key role in fighting for the School Reform Act of 1998, which established local school councils, has been a fierce critic of charter schools and high-stakes standardized testing. Her husband, Turpin, was pastor at the United Church of Hyde Park, 1448 E. 53rd St. In an announcement on PURE’s website, Woestehoff said her husband received a job offer from another church in Wyoming and called it the “right time for us to make this move.” Turpin is now pastor at Union Presbyterian Church in Evanston, Wyo. Woestehoff, who was named one of Chicago’s 100 most powerful women by the Chicago Sun-Times in 2004, said she will continue working with another education advocacy group, which she cofounded, Parents Across America. In the meantime, the future of PURE remains up in the air. “It’s up to the PURE Board to decide what to do from here,” Woestehoff said. “They may decide to keep the PURE name and corporate status without my involvement. They can also decide to close PURE down. We are hoping to meet in Chicago in about a month to make that determination.” Under Turpin, the United Church of Hyde Park supported an eclectic blend of community groups, including the Campaign to End the Death Penalty, the Hyde Park Suzuki music school and local quilt makers. As we typically do around our efforts to address community health needs, we will share any developments as they unfold,” said UCMC executive director of Strategic Communications, Lorna Wong. UCMC applied to the board in April for approval to add 43 patient rooms in unfinished space in CCD. The board initially denied permission on July 14 calling the project “excessive.” The now-approved plan would relocate 154 hospital beds, 122 medical-surgical beds and 32 intensive care beds from Mitchell Hospital, 5841 S. Maryland Ave., to CCD, 5700 S. Maryland Ave. UCMC said in a release the $123 million project would help “better treat critically ill patients from the South Side of Chicago and beyond.” The newly constructed $700 million CCD opened in spring of 2013 but UCMC is pushing the limits of its capacity. Since adding 38 surgical beds in March UCMC is at 80 percent capacity 70 percent of the time, and its ICU is at 80 percent capacity 90 percent of the time. And often these two figures — the genius and the outsider — were one and the same,” Ko said. “This large middle ground contributes vastly, not only in numbers, but in quality and quantity to artistic production,” he added. The show explores the “idea of occupying a moderate position” but does not have a political emphasis, according to Ralapati. “One would think about a political position, but it can also relate to occupying something that can be considered a middle ground, a middle territory,” she said. Works address the idea of the middle in a variety of ways, ranging from an age to part of a process. Austin, Texas-based artist Michael Smith reflects on his own middle age in “Avuncular Quest,” a video and photography work. Members of the Trauma Care Coalition, an umbrella group of advocates who want UCMC to build a Level 1 Adult Trauma Care Center on the South Side, traveled to the hearing in Normal, Ill. to speak against the project. Trauma care advocates contend that the university’s priorities are out of line with the community when it spends hundreds of millions of dollars on new hospitals, and the South Side has a lack of trauma care centers. A level 1 Adult trauma care center would treat victims of gunshot wounds, car accidents and other life-threatening injuries. Currently patients injured on the South Side are taken to suburban trauma care centers or Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The U. of C. does have a pediatric trauma care center for patients under 17 years old. The Orland Park clinic would put a $67 million, 120,000 square foot facility that will provide radiation oncology, diagnostic imaging, a retail pharmacy, women’s health, gastroenterology, cardiology and surgical consulting. The board approved the Orland Park project 6-0 with three absentees. Construction is expected to be complete by summer 2018. [email protected] Subscribe Today! 1. Call 1-773-643-8533 ext. 127 OR 2. The council also signed a national resolution on high-stakes testing. Through its efforts the organization for the Coalition to Revitalize Dyett High School, which made up of seven organizations from across the city that includes educators, parents and community organization activists and the group has been petitioning to keep the school open by transforming it into a “Global Leadership and Green Technology,” open enrollment neighborhood school. Having struggled to gain full support from the Bronzeville Community Action Council and Ald. Will Burns (4th) the coalition sought support from the HP-K CAC. After hearing the testimony from the coalition, reading the group’s full report and reviewing comments from Burns, Denise Hill, president of the HPKCAC, said the group supports “the alderman’s efforts to keep Dyett open as an open-enrollment school and we support many features in the current proposal from the Coalition to Revitalize Dyett.” The U.S. Department of Education has opened a federal investigation into the Title VI Civil Rights Violations at Dyett High School. Last June — after a hiatus of several years from showcasing local art — the shop at 1418 E. 53rd St. re-established its Artist of the Month program. The program gives area artists with limited exposure a chance to show off their art and give talks. “I’m glad to have the opportunity to give them a place to showcase their art,” The Great Frame Up owner Mark Jelke said. “I know how hard it is for a lot of these artists to make a living trying to get their work out there.” The Great Frame Up employees Jessie Whitehead and Leslie Travis — both artists themselves — resurrected the Artist of the Month program with Jelke’s blessing. They hoped it would increase the visibility of their shop after it moved several storefronts east to its new location, along a narrow pedestrian corridor. The program’s first featured artist was Whitehead herself, a printmaker. “I already had a body of work,” she said. “And we really wanted to get it started.” Artists being featured at the store have worked with media ranging from photography to painting to stitchwork. Most are from Hyde Park, but Travis says showings are open to anyone from the wider South Side. “This is often — but not always — for people who don’t have regular gallery space,” Travis said. According to Travis, a neighborhood resident since 1968, “Back in the ‘70s or ‘80s, Hyde Park had a much larger gallery and art store presence than it does now.” She cited as an example cooperative art gallery Artisans 21, which closed last December after 37 years in Hyde Park. September’s Artist of the Month, Marianne Hammett, happens to be an original member of Artisans 21 who helped to secure the gallery’s spot in the old Harper Court. A fabric and ceramic artist educated at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Hammett will show off nine of her works at The Great Frame Up this month. Travis, a longtime neighbor of Hammett’s, approached her about participating. Although she says she is not aggressive about displaying her art and creates it mostly for her own enjoyment, it will be on sale. “I’m a Hyde Parker, I want to support whatever’s going on here,” Hammett said. For now The Great Frame Up has only scheduled artists of the month through January of next year, but it is looking to host more. Artist of the Month applicants are invited to leave the store with a letter of intent containing their contact information and a description of their art, as well as hard copy samples or a link to their online portfolio. “I would like to see it go on as long as we can get the artists,” Jelke said. Dubbed “Chameleon” for its variety of applications, the computing service will let researchers program their own software to run experiments with large data sets using a network of remote servers for storage space. It will hold five petabytes of disk space — equivalent to five million gigabytes, or the computing power of almost 10,000 highend laptops. “From the perspective of an experimental instrument in computer science, this is very important,” said Chameleon principal investigator and U. of C. Computation Institute Senior Fellow Kate Keahey. “This will allow us to support experiments on big data type of research.” The practice of using multiple servers for data storage — also called cloud computing — has increased in popularity in recent years. Internet services like Google Drive, which allows users to create and save word documents and Excel spreadsheets online, rely on cloud computing. Chameleon will have its first users this fall, and is expected to be complete by 2016. High-stakes testing HP-K CAC also voted at the meeting to endorse a resolution critical of high-stakes testing. In doing so, HP-K CAC joins other Hyde Park institutions including Murray and Ray elementary schools, University of Chicago Laboratory Schools and other schools across the nation that are seeking to put an end to high stakes testing. HP-K CAC voted to sign a resolution showing its support of Time Out From Testing (TOFT), a national campaign that is seeking to put an end to the way standardized tests are used to determine student promotion and teacher evaluation. On a more local level the organization More Than A Score has been leading a campaign encouraging parents to use their right to “opt-out” or refuse to allow their children to be given standardized tests. In the resolution the school is calling on the governor, state legislature and board of education to reexamine how it uses tests results and develop a new system that does not rely heavily on standardized tests to determine student learning and teacher effectiveness. The resolution also calls for an overhaul of the No Child Left Behind Act, which would reduce the number of mandated tests, the strict set of guidelines toward preparing for the tests and fixed role for the use of student test scores in evaluating educators. Wells St. When: through Sept. 28 Tickets: $15-$25 Phone: 773-747-6821 By ANNE SPISELMAN Theater Critic B ased on the brief first act, you’d expect Mike Leigh’s 1979 “Ecstasy” to be one of those rage-fueled, violence-wracked British “kitchen sink” dramas of the Thatcher era (though it premiered just before she came to power). But the much longer second act goes in a very different direction that is simultaneously sadder and more hopeful. At least that’s the case in Cole Theatre’s carefully crafted production, the very first for this brand-new equity company. It’s a rather daring choice, with the variety of British accents and unfamiliar vocabulary, but director Shade Murray is a Leigh aficionado and even was a member of Roadworks Productions when it staged the play in 1997, apparently the last time it was done in Chicago. I initially wondered about the wisdom of reviving the ironically titled work. Except for a few outbursts, all the characters do is drink, smoke cigarettes and talk, mostly about trivial things. Like many of Leigh’s plays and films, “Ecstasy” was developed through improvisation, and once you know this, it shows in the looseness of the dialogue. In addition, the people we meet in Act 1 are very unappealing. Set in a shabby one-room flat well designed by Grant Sabin (complete with dripping kitchen sink), the evening begins with a post-coital nude scene between Jean (Maura Kidwell), who lives there and works as a gas station cashier (and misses the days when she was allowed to pump gas), and Roy (Joel Reitsma), the married lout with whom she’s sleeping. It’s clear from her depressed manner, monosyllabic utterances and repeated recourse to the gin bottle that she’s in serious emotional trouble, even as she seems to want Roy to stay, though he leaves anyway. Next to visit is Dawn (Michaela Petro), the quintessentially working-class live wire who lives around the corner with her feckless Irish husband, Mick, and her three young daughters. With her fluorescent blue eye makeup, new shirts (probably shoplifted from the C & A), and loud screechy voice, she’s immensely irritating as she cackles on about this and that (barely comprehensibly) and urges Jean to go to the pub with her Friday night. Jean’s bad choices in men comes to a head in the third scene, when Roy shows up for more sex, Dawn arrives to take her out for the night and all of a sudden Roy’s wife, Val (Lauren Pizza), bursts in and starts beating her husband, leading to a melee that leaves Dawn and Jean, who disappears outside (this isn’t well explained), shaken and Jean’s bed broken. All this is sort of a setup for the second act, when Jean and Dawn return from the pub with Mick (Boyd Harris) and Len (Layne Manzer), a construction worker and old friend who’s returned to London after several years and was once sweet on Jean. Mick and Dawn, a bickering but affectionate couple who here seem mismatched (at least I couldn’t imagine them together), have planned the reunion as a surprise for Jean and obviously would like to see her and Len get together. They also feel sorry for Len, though the reason isn’t clear (I think his wife has left him, though it wasn’t said explicitly that I heard). The men fix Jean’s bed (by taking the legs off), everyone drinks an inordinate amount and, as they get drunker and drunker, each in his or her own way, they discuss current affairs (mostly the “Pakis,” with Jean taking a liberal stance and Len bordering on racist), reminisce about old times and sing a round of songs. Len’s off-color ditty reflects his shyness in an uncomfortable situation, and the other ones are similarly revealing. In fact, what makes the party at all interesting is the indirect way the characters’ complexities are revealed, laying bare the loneliness and desperation of their lives. At the same time, the way Kidwell’s Jean warms up with these friends compared to her behavior with Roy suggests a respite from despair, as does Len’s basic decency and kindness nicely embodied by Manzer. Harris’ Mick is callow, carelessly crude and sometimes cruel to Dawn, but he’s also charming and deeply caring. And beneath the no-nonsense coarse exterior of Petro’s Dawn lurks a vulnerable heart. After Mick and Dawn leave, the 773.891-0429 Left to right: Layne Manzer as Len, Michaela Petro as Dawn, Boyd Harris as Mick and Maura Kidwell as Jean in Cole Theatre’s “Ecstasy” by Mike Leigh, directed by Shade Murray. Michael Brosilow awkwardness between Jean and Len increases. She’s asked him to stay, but he doesn’t know how to act and keeps offering to go. Then she breaks down in tears and all the misery of her life spills out to this man who was once a friend but now is essentially a stranger. The direction and acting falter a little here, but the moment still is touching, as is Len’s reaction. Even more telling, at least for me, is a tiny gesture he makes that somehow says “everything is going to be okay now.” I won’t reveal what it is, but it involves that kitchen sink. 12 Hyde Park Herald, September 3, 2014 Lost Hyde Park The following is a reprint of the seventh installment of the “Lost Hyde Park” series. It and all structures on the east side of old Lake Street were demolished well before land clearance in the 1950s and this site became the present Lake Park Avenue. By SUSAN O’CONNOR DAVIS The neighborhood that surrounds each of us, according to eminent urban scholar Kenneth Jackson, is the emotional anchor of our lives. It is a compilation of the sights, smells and movements that constitute our very existance. It is here we create an individual record, yet are conjoined by the many emotions that flow through our sense of place. Friendship, joy, fear, love, boredom, jealousy, grief and betrayal all play out daily within the walls that line our avenues. Usually silent to onlookers, at times the compilation of these emotions has led to unexpected and tragic events. Ninety years ago, spring found Kenwood a particularly deadly place. When the warmer air of May finally arrived in 1924, tulips and crocus were past bloom, but the scent of lilacs filled the air. The lawns of the upscale neighborhood had just turned a bright green and the bare branches of native oak trees sprouted their leaves after another of Chicago’s long winters. And as they still do today, residents came out of hibernation — an especially happy time of the year for the young, for lovers and for the restless. The 1920s were a time that witnessed an explosion of mass culture as society shed the constraints of earlier years. Chicago was a beehive of activity, and not all of it legal. During an era of jazz and the flapper, of illicit alcohol and bootlegging, and of organized crime and of guns, Kenwood would seem much removed from the mayhem. But events did not quite work out that way. During the first week of April, a very beautiful and very married bookkeeper named Beulah May Annan invited a Anna and Albert Loeb raised four sons in this mansion at 5017 S. Ellis Ave., which was desigend by Arthur Huen in 1910. He was the architect of some of the most distinguished houses in Chicago, and country estates in the exclusive suburb of Lake Forest on the city’s North Shore. Loeb’s son Richard and his friend Nathan Leopold believed their high intellect made them capable of committing the perfect crime. Their gruesome plot was conceived in this mansion, within two blocks of where they kidnapped and brutally murdered their neighbor Bobby Franks. Chicago History Museum co-worker over for a midday tryst. On the outskirts of Kenwood, in a nondescript three-story red brick courtyard building at 817 E. 46th St., Annan and Harry Kalstedt had a drunken argument. It is thought he was trying to end the affair, and when a struggle for a gun in the bedroom ensued, Kalstedt was shot. The 24-year-old bobbed brunette poured a gin cocktail, put on her favorite record, and waited for Harry to die. Annan fired the shot at a time when notion of “celebrity” began to enthrall the American public. The first radio stations went on the air, bringing entertainment into the living room. The talkies became a staple of entertainment, and spectacular movie houses rose in the community. Newspapers carried melodramatic stories, and Beulah May’s filled that bill quite nicely. Her sensational trial was followed nationally; in the end “the most beautiful woman ever tried for murder in Cook County” claimed she was pregnant and had fired in self-defense. On May 24th Beulah May Annan was acquitted of murder — she had feigned regret, and plied the male jury for sympathy. By the time of her acquittal, the naked body of a boy had been found in a culvert beneath the railroad tracks near Wolf Lake, some ten miles south of Kenwood. Annan worked at a laundry, while Richard Loeb and Nathan Leopold Jr. were privileged Kenwood teenagers. But they did have one thing in common. Nineteen years old and exceptionally intelligent, Nathan Leopold had mastered numerous languages and was an avid birdwatcher. His parents were wealthy GermanJewish immigrants; his father made a fortune in the family shipping business, among other concerns. Nathan was only See LOST on page 13 LOST from page 12 16 when he entered college and graduated from the University of Chicago in 1923 with high honors. That spring he was taking law classes with plans to attend Harvard Law School, and all expected his future to be bright. Described as “impossibly good looking,” Richard was the third son of Albert Loeb, the vice-president in charge of the massive Sears-Roebuck mail order business. Richard graduated from high school at 14 and became one of the youngest graduates in University of Michigan history, although the experience was not an easy one for him. Several years younger than his classmates, he was a lackluster student, more interested in detective stories and petty acts of crime than his studies. The relationship between Loeb and Leopold was described as stormy and intense, and more than platonic. Leopold was aloof and egotistical, while the handsome Loeb was outgoing and sociable. Their lawyer, Clarence Darrow, would later say their friendship was “weird and almost impossible” and it led the two boys to do together what they almost certainly would never have done alone — commit murder. As Beulah Annan awaited her fate, Wednesday, May 21 dawned cloudy and chilly. After classes at the Harvard School for Boys ended that afternoon, Bobby Franks umped a baseball game, then started his three block walk home. Loeb and Leopold would have been familiar to him, and they pulled up in a rental car and offered a ride. After Bobby stepped onto the running board at 49th Street and Ellis Avenue, he was never seen alive again. Bobby’s parents, Jacob and Flora Franks, renounced their faith to become Christian Scientists and lived quietly among their Jewish neighbors. Franks was a successful man — he began his career with a pawnshop, and later turned to managing real estate investments. They lived in another of Kenwood’s mansions, a yellow brick house facing 51st Street, about a half block to the south of the Loebs, where they had dined the previous month. When Bobby had not returned home by dinner time, his worried parents began to look for him and frantically contacted the headmaster of the Harvard School. Jacob Franks searched the school himself, and while away his destraught wife received a phone call from the “kidnappers.” A special delivery ransom letter arrived September 3, 2014, Hyde Park Herald the next morning and demanded $10,000, with instructions on how to deliver the money and warnings not to contact authorities. Another phone call from Loeb and Leopold to Bobby’s father gave further instructions on how to deliver the money. In a state of distress and confusion, Jacob was unable to carry through with the delivery and later that same day the body of a boy, identified as 14-year-old Robert Franks, was found in the culvert at Wolf Lake. By Saturday the 24th, the Chicago papers were carrying full page stories of this crime — including an image of the rain-soaked kidnapping site. Rewards for the capture of the murderer quickly mounted as police and newspaper reporters searched for clues. A pair of glasses was found near Franks’ body had unusual hinges. Sales records showed that only three had been sold in the Chicago area, one of which was to Nathan Leopold. When approached by authorities he explained that he often bird-watched in the area and the glasses must have fallen out of his pocket while there. Several days after Bobby Franks was laid to rest, both Leopold and Loeb were detained and questioned separately by authorities under intense media coverage. Though their stories did not match perfectly, police were unable to build a case and they were released. Newspaper investigators discovered much more substantial evidence. The type on the ransom note matched a portable typewriter that Loeb had sometimes used. The Leopold chauffeur provided a contradictory timeline for the use of the automobile, and gradually the alibis began to crumble. Faced with the new evidence, by the end of May Leopold and Loeb confessed to the murder and kidnapping, and told their story. They readily revealed the kidnapping had been planned for months as a challenge to commit the perfect crime. The case became a major story in newspapers across the country, and the American public demanded swift trials and executions. Albert Loeb went to a noted attorney, the venerable 67-year-old Clarence Darrow. On June 5, a grand jury indicted Leopold and Loeb for kidnapping and murder. The following day their full confessions were published in the newspapers, and the trial began on July 21. Darrow immediately stunned the court by changing their pleas from not guilty to guilty. It was assumed he would be using a defense of not guilty by reason of insanity, but Darrow knew a not guilty plea would lead to a trial and concluded a jury would be likely to sentence his clients to death. His approach Looking north on Ellis Avenue from the Franks house, a crowd of hundreds stood outside as young Bobby Franks’ casket was carried to the hearse by his schoolmates. The Franks residence was sold six months after the funeral. His parents moved to the North Side and away from the site of their anguish. mkstage.com 13 Best known as the architect of large apartment hotels, Henry Newhouse was awarded several single-family commissions by the German Jewish elite moving into Kenwood. The yellow brick residence at Ellis Avenue and 51st Street was designed for Jacob Franks in 1910. Nearly a century later a developer bought the property with plans to divide the house into two condominiums units. A zoning variance received city approval, but the work remains in a partially completed state. Kevin Eatinger. was to persuade the judge that his clients were mentally ill, the result of trauma that both had experienced at a young age. Chicagoans gathered around their radios on the morning of September 10; the final day of the hearing was broadcast live. Darrow’s strategy and two-hour impassioned speech against the death penalty had worked — Leopold and Loeb were sentenced to life imprisonment. While the crime impacted the neighborhood on an emotional level, it also had a lasting effect on the physical environment. The sprawling frame house of the Leopold family at 4754 S. Greenwood Ave., dated to the 1880s, disappeared shortly after the crime. It was demolished on Oct. 2, 1925 and the property was later subdivided to accommodate the construction of several smaller homes. The Leopolds’ garage, where the car in which they murdered Bobbie Franks was cleaned of evidence, remains tucked away behind an apartment building. Albert Loeb suffered from heart disease, and his condition steadily worsened following the verdict of life imprisonment. He died just six months after the crime and his magnificent estate stood, albeit in dilapidated condition, until it was demolished in 1971. Today the property has been subdivided and there are two new houses on the property, surrounded by the original brick fence. The Franks family moved shortly after the crime and sold all their belongings, no doubt trying to relieve themselves of painful memories. Their home still stands, although the structure is in a state of disrepair. For much of his professional life famed attorney Clarence Darrow lived at 1537 E. 60th St., just south of the Midway. His ashes were scattered in the Jackson Park lagoon, now the site of an annual celebration of his life and principles. The distinguished, silver haired Dr. Archibald Church testified for the prosecution at the trial. Church, also a Kenwood resident living at 4854 S. Dorchester Ave., found neither defendant displayed any sign of mental illness. Dr. Lester E. Frankenthal was an obstetrician by training, but received notoriety as the Loeb family physician. At Stateville Prison, a fellow convict took matters into his own hands and fatally slashed Loeb with a razor in 1936. Frankenthal, also a neighborhood resident living at 4825 S. Woodlawn Ave., attributed Loeb’s death to shock and loss of blood. And the Harvard School at 4731 S. Ellis Ave., from which Bobby Franks made his last journey, was sold in 2006 and renovated to luxury condominiums. Beulah May Annan’s husband stood with her during the entire ordeal; she left him the day after the acquittal. The lights and By September 1924, the Franks family sold their house to theater magnate Joseph Trinz, and moved into the Drake Hotel. Their belongings were sold at an auction, where curiousity seekers far outnmbered buyers. Jacob Franks died at the Drake four years later. Chicago Crime Scene Project publicity during and after her sensational trial took its toll; she died four years later at the age of 28. Annan became the inspiration for the character Roxy Hart, one of the colorful subjects of Maurine Watkins’ play “Chicago;” Watkins was the reporter for the Tribune covering the case. The play was adapted into a 1927 silent film, a 1975 stage musical and in 2002 a movie that won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Looking back on that fateful spring 90 years ago, Kenwood seems an unlikely place to have contributed to the city’s reputation for violence. The killing of Harry Kalstedt was perhaps a means to an end — the point of Bobby Frank’s murder was the thrill of murder itself. 14 Hyde Park Herald, September 3, 2014 1526 E. 55th Street, Hyde Park Hyde Park Shopping Center, 55th & Lake Park Avenue • 773-358-6400 PULL THIS TAB TO VIEW OUR ENTIRE AD: Store Hours: See Posted Hours at Your Local Store.
