FAQ INNOVATIVE CAGING SYSTEMS PDF DOCUMENTATION 2013® www.tripleatrading.nl Air stream: Demands for the air stream? All racks/carrousels most be tested after installation to be sure that the air stream does meet the minimum requires. After connection the racks/carrousels must have a minimum of 15 ACH (Air Changes per Hour). 30 ACH guarantees a longer period between cage cleaning. Measuring the air stream is done by us with a M79210 ACS Anemometer. Airspeed change: Do I have influence on the air speed in the cages? Yes, that is possible. If desired by our clients we can provide the racks/carrousels with a Damper Assembly enabling you to change the air speed in the cages. The air speed can also be monitored with a Rack Status Monitor 24/7. FAQ INNOVATIVE CAGING SYSTEMS PDF DOCUMENTATION 2013® www.tripleatrading.nl Allergen and Odour free: How is it possible that an animal house with your racks is allergen free and odour free? We do not filter the air in the cage and bring it back into the vivaria, we filter the air in the cage and we bring it straight to your chimney instead of back into the vivaria Clean HEPA filtered air is thrown into the cages on the front side trough the Reemay filter. This is the second time that the air is filtered. The first time is by your already existing HVAC system. The air is leaving the cages on the backside where it is again filtered by the second Reemay filter. This filter is making sure that you have much less cleaning work on the rack itself. From there the air is not going back into the vivaria but straight outside. There is no re-circulation but direct exhaust of dirty air. Allergen free is becoming more and more important. The odour free aspect is also absolutely fantastic for everybody who is working with the animals in the vivaria. Autoclavable: Are your systems autoclavable? All the parts on and of the cages or racks are all autoclavable. Also the entire racks and the carrousels can be autoclaved. Carrousels with no cages mounted on it easy fits trough a corridor, for example a door. Bottles: From what kind of material are the bottles made? Bottles are made of polysulfone or polycarbonate. One bottle contains 400 ml for the carrousels. For racks “rat” there also is a 600 ml bottle available. Black bottles are available, made of polysulfone. Red bottles are available, made of polysulfone. Measure bottles. Measure bottles that can contain 60 ml are available, on request in a holder for two bottles. For rats we also have round bottles. Collecting excrements: Is there a Floor available where under we can collect excrements of the animals? Yes, two types, both made of Stainless Steel also called corrosion-resistant steel or CRES. One type is a wire / bar type. The other type is a perforated CRES floor. FAQ INNOVATIVE CAGING SYSTEMS PDF DOCUMENTATION 2013® www.tripleatrading.nl Is it easy to connect the systems? That is very easy. Every lab has a well functioning HVAC (Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning). Every local contractor should be considered to be able to mount extra pipes with a diameter of 100 mm on the existing system at spots that have been chosen before by us or/and you. In fact the customer has to provide us with ceiling drops. In less than a few minutes we can connect the EVC systems to the HVAC. One of our prospect calculated that if they switch to our EVC system and they create the ceiling drops for us because of the high density 5 of his 11 rooms will become empty. Besides the fact that you save thousands of Euro’s on electrical power, because our systems do not use engines or blowers, you will also save money because in the empty rooms you do not need the HVAC as much as in the rooms where the animals are living. Thereby the radiation of heat created by our systems is only 3, 5% of the heat radiation created by an IVC. (See also: Electrical power). If you decide to start expand, you can use the free rooms again instead of building a new or an extra facility and you will save a lot of money on constructions. Defect HVAC: A system without motors or blowers seems fantastic because there will be no use of electrical power, no maintenance and no defects but what to do when our HVAC installation is defect? Or what to do in case of an electrical power failure? You simply have to disconnect the systems. This is an extreme simple procedure. The whole system keeps up to 37,5% of the normal ventilation. You now have 48 hours to repair your HVAC or re install electrical power. When necessary we also have an “Opti Fail-safe fan” (C80010). In case of an electrical power failure you can easily mount this fan on a carrousel and this fan will take over the ventilation of the cages during 72 hours. This device is functioning on simple 12 volt batteries. Batteries can simply be removed and recharged in the station. Different kinds of animals in one room: We want to house different kind of animals, for example mice and rats in one room. Is that possible with your EVC systems? Yes, you can easily do that. The cages are individual ventilated and the animal can smell persons working in the vivaria but it is impossible for them to smell animals in another cage than their own. So, no problem at all. FAQ INNOVATIVE CAGING SYSTEMS PDF DOCUMENTATION 2013® www.tripleatrading.nl Dimensions of the carrousels: Dimensions of the racks: What are the dimensions of the carrousels? What are the dimensios of the racks? Carrrousels Carrousels without automatic watering system. All types with all the cages at the carrousel. L x B x H: 1003 x 991 x 1956 mm. Carrousels with automatic watering. All types with all the cages at the carrousel. L x B x H: 1003 x 991 x 1994 mm. Cages Mice cage for the carrousel. Exterior – length 343 mm – width front 292 mm – height 155mm Interior – length 318 mm – width front 279 mm – height 129 mm Floor space: 484 square centimeters Cages Rat cage for the carrousel. Exterior – length 356 mm – width front 485 mm - height 218 mm Interior – length 325 mm – width front 470 mm – height 205 mm Floor space: 929 square centimeters. Cages Rat cage plus for the carrousel. Exterior - length 389 mm - width front 569 mm - height 262 mm Interior - length 350 mm - width front 510 mm - height 254 mm Floor space: 1.181 cm2 - 1.574 including an added mezzannine Weight < 270 kg FAQ INNOVATIVE CAGING SYSTEMS PDF DOCUMENTATION 2013® www.tripleatrading.nl Disposable cages: Can you deliver disposal cages? Yes, we can deliver those for the mice carrousel. Those are made of recyclable polyethyleentereftalaat, in short PET. Available in all kind of combinations. With top/lid suitable for Lab Product Hydropac. With top/lid suitable for Edstrom Sipper Sack. With top/lid suitable for ACS 300 ml water bottle. With bedding. Without bedding. We deliver those cage in a box with 16 pieces. Bedding material is Harlan Teklad corn cob. Dividing a cage: Is it possible to devide a cage in more than one volume? If yes, how does that work in combination with an automatic watering system? Yes, that is possible with a UniMICE® Cage Divider Assembly and Autowater - Divider is an innovative polycarbonate plastic wall that evenly divides a 75 square inch cage exactly in two. Assembly includes divider, clips, and C40102 split feeder. Extra bottle and hanger sold separately. P/N C79170M. UniMICE Autowater Cage Divider Assembly One side retains autowatering, the other side uses the OptiMICE water bottle (water bottle sold separately). Polished stainless steel. P/N C79171. Electrical power consumption: How about electrical power consumption? We are all aware that in the world of today it is of huge importance to decrease the use of energy. An IVC system is a huge power consumer because it is running all year 24/7. Do your IVC/EVC systems use a lot of electricity? We do not mound motors and/or blowers but we use your existing HVAC installation instead. In theory it is possible that your HVAC system will meet a very, very little resistance caused by the two or four Reemay filters mounted on the cages. A very positive point is that the radiation of heat by a regular IVC is 1450 BTU, our EVC systems only produce 50 BTU. It depends on your region but everybody can now understand that costs saved by using our systems are significant. A calculation module can be send to you by e-mail. FAQ INNOVATIVE CAGING SYSTEMS PDF DOCUMENTATION 2013® www.tripleatrading.nl Empty cages: Whenever animal technicians have cages without animals in it where can they leave the cages? Do they have to put them back on the rack/carrousel or elsewhere? It is not necessary to put empty cages back on the system. It is necessary with other systems but we have an automatic closing valve mounted on the system. Other manufacturers ask their clients to put the cages back in order not to disturb the balance of their systems. For our systems it does not matter where you want you leave empty cages. Environmental demands: Demands for the environment of the cages.. Only demand for the air is to be HEPA filtered on a ISO 6 level. Before installation of the systems the ceiling drops must be made at the desired point. This can be done by a local constructor or by own engineers. Diameter of the exhaust pipe: 100 mm. EVC IVC: Is this system IVC or not? Yes and no because we rather speak about an EVC. IVC stands for individual ventilated cages. So in fact our cages are IVC because they certainly are individually ventilated. Because we do not ventilate the cages the common way with motors and blowers and filters blowing the air back into the vivaria but with exhaust of dirty air straight outside we speak about EVC, Exhaust Ventilated Cages. More info on this website: chapter “how it works”. Filters: From witch material are the filters made of? Filters are specially produced for us by Reemay in Canada. Filters are made of laminated polyfiber in a silicon gasket. Specifications: 99,97. Stops everything in the already HEPA filtered air up to 0,03 micron. Changing of filters: approximately after three years, no tools needed. Filter on the front side to filter the already HEPA filtered air again. Filter on the back side to prevent pollution caused by bedding and/or food particles on the racks/carrousels. Cleaning of filters is not neccesary, leave the filters on the cage during the washing process. In case of, for example, surgery a cage is not placed back in the rack or the carrousel, the cage can be carried out with a special top with extra filters or a open top with stainless steel wire. Safety of your animals: In case the racks are carried out with an automatic watering system and a valve starts leaking. Just imagine that a valve in one of the top cages starts leaking. Normally the animals in the entire column will drown over night. If you use our system animals will not die because of drowning. The animals in the upper cage with the leaking valve can head for safety by sitting on the filters. Water in the cage will leave the cage trough the, as low as possible placed, front filter and can not get into the cages under the cage with the leaking valve. In case of leaking valves nothing worse than a wet floor will happen. FAQ INNOVATIVE CAGING SYSTEMS PDF DOCUMENTATION 2013® www.tripleatrading.nl Food reservoirs: Can you provide us with different types of food reservoirs except for the standard ones? Yes, we can: OptiMice® Sac n Pac Feeder - Feeder is constructed of all stainless steel and fits in the OptiMice cage in place of the standard feeder and water bottle. It accommodates either the Edstrom Sipper Sack® or the Lab Products Hydropac®. OptiMice Sac n Pac Solo - Replaces water bottle in the Sac n Pac. Positioned next to the ACS standard feeder. OptiMice Wire Feeder - Feeder is V-shaped, electro polished stainless steel. Capacity: 882 gram. OptiMice® Large Capacity Wire Feeder - Feeder is a larger version of the standard feeder. Made from electro polished stainless steel. Capacity: 850 gram. OptiMice® Scruffing Grid - Our ACS Scruffing Grid was developed in response to customer requests for a location for handlers to manipulate a mouse directly above the cage after the cage top is removed. This item provides a multi-bar location for animals to grab when being handled for brief procedures. It can be retrofitted to any standard OptiMice feeder, and once installed, is a permanent feeder fixture allowing feeders to stack. Grid is fabricated from stainless steel. OptiMice® J Feeder - Replaces standard feeder for use with powder or granular type feed. Electro polished stainless steel with integral flow bars to prevent spillage. Low height allows even juvenile mice access to feed. J-Feeder is designed to clear bedding and tox floor. OptiRAT Sac n Pac - Fits on both sides of the standard OptiRAT feeder, and also holds either of the two water bag types. Both the right and left Sac n Pacs are identical, and do not require a special feeder. Both Sac n Pac units feature polished, all stainless steel construction with a polycarbonate viewing window. A simple selector arm in the bottom of the Sac n Pac allows for configuration changes to accommodate either water bag choice. Available individually or as complete rack options. OptiRAT J Feeder - Replace the standard pellet feeder with this feeder for use with powdered or granular feed. All stainless steel construction designed to clear bedding and tox floor while still using either the standard water bottle or water bag holders. Particularly useful with Guinea Pigs. Green: Why is your product called “Green”? Nowadays “Green” is the motto. “Green” saves electrical power and –of course- money. Some manufacturers of IVC systems are advertising and telling us that their products are “green”. By saying that they mean that their products can be recycled, for the rest everything remains the same. In the world of today it is of extreme importance to decrease the use of energy. When we buy a car or a house we think about the environment and we certainly do not want to use more energy than is necessary. Why shouldn’t we think about the environment when we need new cages for our animals? An IVC system is using a lot of energy because it runs all year 24/7. Are your systems consuming a lot of energy? Not at all. For ventilation we use your HVAC installation. It is already there so why shouldn’t we use that system for more than one purpose? Also the radiation of heat of a normal IVC is 1450 BTU our systems are only producing 50 BTU. Per 100 cages with four mice per cage you can save between € 700,00 en € 1.200,00 per year. We can provide you with a calculation form so you can easily find out how much money you can save. Calculated over one year the save of costs can be pretty impressive. Our systems also enables you to have twice the density of animals per square meter. This means that in case of switching to our systems you will have a few empty rooms and you can ask yourself the question if you need to heat those rooms on the level that you do today. If you are going to re use the empty space you do not necessarily have to build a new building so the costs that can be saved on construction costs are even more impressive, this save of costs is huge. FAQ INNOVATIVE CAGING SYSTEMS PDF DOCUMENTATION 2013® www.tripleatrading.nl Maintenance and service: What about maintenance and service? Neccesary maintenance. Nothing because there are no motors or blowers. We use your HVAC as a central motor. Cleaning on the rack and carrousel structure. Almost nothing because we have also placed a Reemay filter at the back of the cages to filter particulars of food and bedding material. Service. Spare parts can rapidly be delivered from stock. Material cages, bottles and platters: Cage and bottles, from what kind of material are the made? The cages and the bottles are made polysulfone or polycarbonate. Polycarbonates, known by the trademarked names Lexan, Makrolon, Makroclear and others, are a particular group of thermoplastic polymers. They are easily worked, molded, and thermoformed. Because of these properties, polycarbonates find many applications. Polycarbonates do not have a unique plastic identification code and are identified as Other, 7. Polysulfone describes a family of thermoplastic polymers. These polymers are known for their toughness and stability at high temperatures. They contain the subunit aryl-SO2-aryl, the defining feature of which is the sulfone group. Polysulfones were introduced in 1965 by Union Carbide. Due to the high cost of raw materials and processing, polysulfones are used in specialty applications and often are a superior replacement for polycarbonates. Cage types Cages are available in: Polycarbonate “bright”. Polysulfone “amber”. Polysulfone “smoke”*. *Polysulfoon “smoke” only for the carrousels. Platters. The platters where the cages are placed on are made of Noryl. Noryl is a blend of polyphenylene oxide (PPO) and polystyrene (PS) that was developed by General Electric Plastics in 1966. It is a rare example of a homogeneous mixture of two polymers. Most polymers are incompatible with one another, so tend to produce separate phases when mixed. The compatibility of the two polymers in Noryl is caused by the presence of a benzene ring in the repeat units of both chains. FAQ INNOVATIVE CAGING SYSTEMS PDF DOCUMENTATION 2013® www.tripleatrading.nl Material steal constructions: The steal construction of the racks and the carrousels, from what kind of material are the made? Steal used for racks and carrousel construction: AISI 304 In metallurgy, stainless steel, also known as inox steel or inox from French "inoxydable", is defined as a steel alloy with a minimum of 10.5 or 11% chromium content by mass. Stainless steel does not corrode, rust or stain with water as ordinary steel does, but despite the name it is not fully stain-proof. It is also called corrosion-resistant steel or CRES when the alloy type and grade are not detailed, particularly in the aviation industry. There are different grades and surface finishes of stainless steel to suit the environment the alloy must endure. Stainless steel is used where both the properties of steel and resistance to corrosion are required. Stainless steel differs from carbon steel by the amount of chromium present. Unprotected carbon steel rusts readily when exposed to air and moisture. This iron oxide film (the rust) is active and accelerates corrosion by forming more iron oxide. Stainless steels contain sufficient chromium to form a passive film of chromium oxide, which prevents further surface corrosion and blocks corrosion from spreading into the metal's internal structure. Passivation only occurs if the proportion of chromium is high enough. Monitoring status: I would like to monitor the air flow, how do I do that? We can supply you with a “Rack Status Monitor”. We recommend one Rack Status Monitor per room. Opti Rack Status Monitor - ACS Rack Status Monitor is a totally solid-state unit that mounts on any Opti rack and displays the rack airflow in CFM. With no moving parts, it has no spinning impellers that can wear out bearings or fly apart. Installation is a simple matter of mounting the quick-disconnect sending unit in line with one of the exhaust hoses, hanging the display unit at the top of the rack, connecting the USB cable between them, and turning on the unit. Like the racks themselves, the RSM needs no external supply of electricity. Its six AA-sized lithium batteries provide power for many months of 24/7 rack monitoring without replacement. P/N C79351. Number of animals per cage: How many animals in one carrousel cage? Answers according to ETS123. FAQ INNOVATIVE CAGING SYSTEMS PDF DOCUMENTATION 2013® www.tripleatrading.nl Producer: Where are the Triple A Trading EVC systems made? The producer of our EVC systems is: Animal Care Systems Denver Colorado USA. Rotating and driving: Can I rotate and drive away the system? Yes and very easy. You can simply spin the carrousel system very easy by hand, absolutely without disturbing the animals, bring the cage to you. The whole system can also be rotated or moved on it’s wheels. Each system stands on four stainless steel rotating wheels, two of them with a safety lock/brake. During transport of the system the animals can stay in their cages. The design of the carrousels is making it more easy to pass trough corridors inside the building. Stability: Do I disturb the animals when I take a cage out of the rack or carrousel system? No, you just lift the cage a little bit and than pull it to you. Animals in the other cages will not notice this and certainly not when it is the carrousel system. At floor level the carrousel is a square so much more stable than any other system. Temperature and AH controll: Can I controll the temperature in the cages? Yes you can of course but not on the rack itself, the system is using the air in the vivaria which is already HEPA filtered by your HVAC. The temperature and the air humidity in the cages is the same as in the vivaria where they are standing in. Ultrasound: Do your systems produce ultrasound? Our systems produce zero ultrasound. Mice and rats are very sensitive for ultrasound caused by motors, blowers, TL lights computers, etc., ETS 123 is very clear about ultrasound and the need to reduce that as far as possible. FAQ INNOVATIVE CAGING SYSTEMS PDF DOCUMENTATION 2013® www.tripleatrading.nl Washing and filling: I would like to change from my curent system to your advanced EVC caging system but what about washing the cages? How does it work with washing and filling bottles? Washing our cages will not be a problem. If you decide to purchase our systems you can decide to buy a PRCI washing machine and or a PRCI bottle washing and filling system. We can offer those for a sharp price. Another sollution is that we provide you with baskets for your washing machine, if needed also custom made is possible. For the bottle washing and filling system we can provide you with adapters. There is no problem, we can take a look at all this together with you before you decide to order. Watering of the animals: How can the animals in your cages be provided with water? 1. Bottle of 400 ml in the cage, for rats two bottles of 400 ml. 2. For the cages on the carrousel for mice a special top is developed with the bottle on the outside, also this bottle can contain 400 ml of water. 3. De sipper sack solution from Edstrom with “sac n pac” holder. 4. For the cages on the carrousel for mice a special top is developed for a Hydropac sack on the outside. 5. Automatic watering system, mounted at the factory from SELab. 6. Automatic watering system, mounted at the factory from Edstrom. This system can also be carried out with easy and fast to remove valves. This enables you to exclude cages at wish from the central drinking system and provide the animals in the chosen cages with a bottle, for example, with medication. 7. Measure bottles 60CC. Unknown: I never heard about your systems, how is that possible? The products from ACS, that we exclusively represant in The Benelux, Germany, Austria and Switzerland, are sold since many years. Founded in 1997 by Germain F. Rivard, DVM, PhD, Animal Care Systems is the first caging systems company in the industry founded by a veterinarian with experience in directing AAALACaccredited animal care & use programs. His experience with animal facility planning, design and management produced the construction of the first Gene Transfer Technologies Training Center and Rodent Barrier Facility for genetically altered mouse colonies. Since acquiring Animal Care Systems from Dr. Rivard in 2001, the company has invested heavily in research and development to bring even better rodent caging to the life science industry. "I stepped down from my directorship because I was feeling miserable about the way we were keeping mice in the lab. My techs were sick and tired of changing cages, and I was always running out of space even though I had large rooms. Also, just like my peers, I disliked static and ventilated small isolation caging systems for the poor air quality and the bad air ventilation they provided to the mice. I decided to invent a completely new, cost-effective system that resolved all those problems. It is an institutional responsibility to provide the best living conditions. The better the environment, the better the health of the animals and the research workers. The more isolated and contained the mice are, the more protection they have. The less we touch the mice, the less risk that we compromise their health and the quality of the research," states Dr. Rivard. Since 1997 a lot has happened. The ACS products are now sold world wide. Western Europe is in fact one of the last regions where an active promotion of those products has started. In fact since 2009. Nevertheless: meanwhile already more than 70 Institutes in Europe are utilizing the renewing products.
