Living in Orefield PA, he attended Parkland High School and upon graduation attended Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster PA. Tom got his start in softball officiating near the end of the 1972 season. With encouragement from Bob Walsh and Barry Boyd, both of whom were influential in his career, Tom started officiating at ISC qualifiers in 1975 and was added to the ISC World Tournament umpires roster in 1981. In that inaugural tournament in Saginaw MI, he worked the plate in a 28 inning marathon featuring Tulsa OK and Ashland OH. A decade later in Sioux City IA, Tom was again behind the dish when HoF lefty Brad Underwood and his Owen Sound ON Canadian Tiremen locked horns with “Chubb” Tangaroa’s Rohnert Park CA Guanella Brothers. That match-up was a 22-inning squeaker semi-final from which Owen Sound emerged with a 1-0 win to advance to the finals. Tom’s on-field arbitrating has taken him to many legendary softball communities, including Allentown PA, Central Park NY, Kimberly WI, Las Vegas NV, Midland MI, Owen Sound ON, Rochester NY, and countless other “Fields of Dreams” throughout Ontario, the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic ISC regions. Other highlights include serving as plate umpire for HoF Michael White’s first championship with Cedar Rapids IA Teleconnect in Saskatoon SK (1987) and Gerald Muizelaar’s first championship for HoF Doc Simmons’ Travelers in Eau Claire WI (2001). Reflecting on his career Tom recalls his first World Tournament in 1981, which many think was the “best of all time” when he worked the 28 inning game after the famous 34 inning matchup the evening before. He also cherishes the opportunities to work the Championship final games in 1987, 1990 and 2001. Of the multitude of players, coaches, officials and umpires that he met through the ISC world he has special fond memories of fellow arbiters and compatriots Bob Walsh (HoF 1986), Ron Brinkman (HoF 2013) and Margarito “Maggie” Banales (HoF 2005) Tom worked 21 ISC World Tournaments in a stellar career upon which the sun finally set in 2005 in Eau Claire WI. Tom and his wife Diane have three children Nick and his wife Alyassa, and two daughters Kelly and Katelyn and her husband Chad. While missing his two decades of officiating, Tom is enjoying his retirement that includes racing flat karts and micro-stocks. He shares that he is “glad to be a survivor of cancer – seven + years out - and he reminds his fellow softballers and families the importance of getting “checked out” because it (cancer) can be beaten if detected early”. Dolan Family’s induction proudly sponsored by Dolan and Murphy – Aurora IL In terms of athletic legacy, the Dolan name is a century old, as 100 years ago Daniel D. Dolan’s grandfather O.B. Dolan, proud proprietor of OB Dolan’s Saloon, hosted prize fighting events in the lower level, attracting some of the finest fighters in the Midwest. Daniel D., born in February 1931, is a life-time citizen of Aurora IL, except for a brief stint in the navy. In the sixties, Sealmaster Stadium in Aurora was home to the Stephens Adamson Sealmasters, a world class softball team. Daniel would take his children to the stadium, in itself a local version of Americana, where youngsters would chase foul balls, later hawking them for nickels. The year 1965 was pivotal as Daniel and his business partner James A. Murphy formed Dolan & Murphy. At the same time the Dolan name was synonymous with Aurora Boy’s Baseball as Daniel’s second cousin Bernie Dolan, and local businessman George Andrews formed Aurora Boy’s Baseball. Dolan & Murphy Real Estate came on board as a pioneer sponsor, and Daniel’s children Daniel T. and Brian participated in the league, as well as suiting up for football and basketball at Our Lady of Good Counsel and East Aurora High Schools. Later, son Ryan and daughter Kara also competed at OLGC and Aurora Central Catholic School. Eventually several grandsons and grand-daughters further carried the Dolan athletic torch in Aurora. In 1982, the Creative DJs, a City League team in Aurora was seeking support and Dolan & Murphy, by then a successful commercial real estate company, agreed to sponsor the team and ventured into the competitive world of fast-pitch softball.. Five years later, Robin Reder, a member of the Aurora IL Home Savings & Loan team that won the 1980 ISC Tournament in Tempe AZ, was managing a local team with aspirations of representing Aurora at the ISC World Tournament. Dolan & Murphy agreed to serve as the sponsor - a relationship that still exists today. Fastpitch was very competitive in Illinois in the 1980-90s. It took five years before Dolan & Murphy Shamrocks won the local qualifier in 1992 and travelled to Salt Lake City UT for its inaugural ISC World Tournament. The team didn’t qualify in 1993, but in 1994 requalified and has never since missed ICS’s annual world-class event. Robin Reder has been at the helm of Dolan and Murphy Shamrocks as both Manager and as a Player/Manager, and according to Daniel, “The Reder Family, beginning with Bob “Bulldog” Reder (and Jo Reder the true “Bulldog”), sisters Denise, Janice and Candi, has been equally synonymous in the Fastpitch Softball world as the Dolan Family.” Fastpitch sponsorship is only one of numerous Dolan family civic activities, including support for Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry and Interfaith Food Pantry, which are prominent during the Thanksgiving/Christmas holiday season’s Citywide Holiday Food Drive. Daniel shared that he extends a special thanks and recognition to the Reder family and Ed Kirner for their role in making the 2016 induction day possible. 4 Hall of Fame 2016 Induction Breakfast Thomas Makea Outfielder Riccarton, Christchurch, New Zealand Born ‐ February 20, 1975 Presenter: Steve Kooser (HoF 2014) ‐ Topeka KS Thomas Makea’s induction proudly sponsored by Jack Fireman (HoF 2015), FIREMAN STEINMETZ DAYA Personal Injury Lawyers ‐ Toronto ON The Makea family of Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand is synonymous with softball excellence “down under”. Brothers Campbell, Fabian and Thomas and sister Leanne all represented New Zealand on their respective Black Sox and White Sox national squads. In the International Softball Congress Thomas competed in ISC tournaments spanning 16 summers making his inaugural appearance with the Decatur IL Pride in 1994 and winding up his successful career in 2009 with the Bondurant IA Midwest Stampede. Thomas helped lead his teams to four ISC championships - twice with Broken Bow NB Travelers/Spirit (2001 & 2003) and twice with Marathon WI County Materials (2005 & 2006). Thomas earned ISC All World distinction on six occasions between 1999-2009, including a superlative tournament in 2000 when he batted .611, plated 10 rbis and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. In International Softball Federation competition Thomas and the Black Sox earned four world titles and he officially announced his retirement from the world stage in Hastings where he had deep softball roots - in April 2013. Thomas stated “This is where I wanted to announce my retirement from international play - here at Akina Park surrounded by whanau where my career began.” That same year Thomas was named co-recipient of the prestigious Ngati Kahungunu’s 2013 Sportsmen’s Award. Balancing his career as a drainlayer with softball and family has been a labour of love. Thomas and his wife Kara are proud parents of three sons, all of whom have strong interest in softball. Dante and Reilly are already making their marks in the Black Sox development program while five-year old Lijah is also demonstrating his family’s athletic legacy. As gifted as he was offensively, Thomas was equally competent patrolling the outfield, possessing psychic-like anticipation and deceiving speed that denied batters many a hit. As well, when combined with his dependable and accurate throwing arm, Thomas’s pitchers were grateful for extra bases being limited. Many regard Thomas as New Zealand’s greatest ever outfielder, consistently performing at a superlative level in international competition for 18 years and helping his Black Sox national squad to four International Softball Federation world championships. Thomas was voted as New Zealand’s “player of the decade” for the 2000s. In his post-playing career Thomas is building on coaching credentials where he was a two-time winning coach with the Wellington U-15s and a winning coach in the National Fastpitch Association championship. In 2014 Thomas was named as head coach of the New Zealand Junior Black Sox national team which he led to the gold medal game, losing to Argentina in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada. The Jr. Black Sox last won the ISF title in 1987 when fellow inductee Jarrad Martin was a key junior player and is now a fellow coach with Thomas on the national junior team. Last month the team was competing in the ISF 2016 Junior Championships in Midland MI, and again earned a silver medal. Contributing significantly to Jarrad’s growth in sports was his father Murray, who was an effective teacher and a influential mentor for his son. In 1989 Jarrad graduated from Waitara High School; and apprenticed as an electrician, becoming fully qualified in 1994. In due course Jarrad became owner/manager of Kinetic Electrical in New Plymouth NZ, an enterprise that commands significant leadership and management on Jarrad’s part. Throughout his career Jarrad was the epitome of quiet, but very strong leadership spanning 18 ISC seasons. In his rookie campaign, he suited up with Sioux City IA NHCD and won his first ISC Championship in Salt Lake City UT. Over his lengthy career, he won five more titles, including an incredible four straight from 2003 – 2006 with Broken Bow NE Travelers/Spirit and Marathon WI County Materials. Jarrad’s sterling, consistent performances earned him ISC All-World honors seven times in ten seasons between 1999 – 2008. He was selected the tournament’s MVP in 2006 (Marathon WI) and again, non-traditionally as an outfielder with the runner-up team Broken Bow - in 1999. As one of the most consistent performers for the New Zealand Black Sox national teams, initially at the ISF Juniors (1989) he won four ISF World Championships and was named New Zealand’s “player of the decade” for the 1990s. Following retirement he gives back to the game as an assistant coach for the Black Sox Jr. national team. He cites that during his career, the New Zealand vs Canada competitions were the toughest in the world at that time. In reviewing his career, Jarrad is humbly appreciative of those who have contributed to his journey. He shares that fellow 2016 inductee Thomas Makea was a fierce competitor and recalls how hard Brad Underwood (HoF 2006) pitched when Jarrad faced Brad in 1992. Jarrad cites gratitude to sponsors, team-mates and friends for all contributing to his abundance of memories. His pursuit of athletic excellence has resulted in his being not only a great player, but contributed to his development as a humble and decent person of renown. Anderson, Murphy’s Fish & Chips – Truro, NS Destiny for Todd Martin was shaped in his birthplace of Bracebridge ON (“no better place to grow up in”), with his parents’ home backing onto the local ball field which doubled as an outdoor rink in the winter. Todd recalls that his childhood revolved around playing hockey in the winter (typical Canadian kid) and ball in the summer. Todd attended Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School and advanced his academics at Georgian College in Barrie ON. Softball genes were handed down from his father Gary who starred in the local league. Todd possesses a rare combination of extraordinary skill combined with a genuine respect from his peers as one of the best team-mates ever. Todd burst upon the ISC as a hard-throwing 24 year-old in 1994 in Summerside PEI with Napanee ON Express, surprising and eliminating Tampa Bay FL Smokers 1-0. That performance vaulted Todd to the next level as Smokers lured him to Tampa Bay in 1996 where he won four games in leading the Smokers to his and the Smokers first ISC Championship. Todd won five more ISC titles, was named as an All-World player on nine occasions and was selected as the tournament’s top pitcher three times (Tampa Bay 1996 & 1998 and Kitchener 2008). Todd ranks tied for 6th in career ISC wins. Todd fondly recalls two career memories - his team’s first ISC title as a highlight of his career when Jason Hansen hit the “1996 shot heard ‘round the fastball world” home run in Kimberly WI, and as well 12 years later with the dramatic comeback by the Kitchener Rivershark Twins when Todd started and re-entered the championship game to record a strike-out to close out the game… and secure Kitchener’s first championship. As a member of four Canadian Sr. Men’s Championship teams, Todd was also a valued asset of Team Canada, competing internationally 1998-2009. Todd and his wife Nicole, along with daughter Jenna and son Chase reside in Aurora ON where Todd has carved out a career in industrial real estate where he serves as a Vice President of Jones Lang and Lasalle. When time permits, Todd thoroughly embraces the challenges of golf. Competing tenaciously on the mound, Todd embraced the “big picture” of fastball – that it’s a game to be enjoyed. No-one enjoyed the off-field camaraderie of the sport more than Todd Martin – his quick wit and engaging personality endeared him to his teammates. For proof, simply ask any of the hundreds of players who shared “time with Todd” on the bench and on the road. Hall of Fame 2016 Induction Breakfast 9 Robert “Chubb” Tangaroa Pitcher Havelock, North Hastings, New Zealand Born: Feb. 6, 1963 Presenters: Brent Smith & Brent Lacy Robert "Chubb" Tangaroa's induction proudly sponsored by the ISC 2016 Quad Cities Host Committee From his birth in Levin New Zealand and a few short years later, Robert “Chubb” Tangaroa and his brothers would pitch behind his residence, which was a local college. All siblings became effective pitchers, with Chubb suiting up in senior ranks with the Kotuko Softball Club as a 13-year-old. Chubb moved to Christchurch, playing for Papanui and then traveled to Western Suburbs where he added to his credentials as a pitcher for Burnside, facing the best softball players in the country. Chubb was an original softball trendsetter. In the 1980s he was among the early wave of New Zealand pitchers to cross the Pacific and truly internationalize the ISC. In his 1984 ISC debut season, “Chubb” toed the rubber for Lancaster CA Chameleons, helping the team to finish 3rd in the ISC Championship in Allentown PA. He also played for the legendary Long Beach CA Nitehawks under the leadership of Red Miers, Denton TX Kings (1986), Saskatoon SK All-O-Matics (1987) and Auckland NZ Medicare Marist (1988). In 1989, he joined a competitive Rohnert Park CA Guanella Brothers squad that finished in the ISC “final four” on three consecutive occasions, losing to Sioux City IA Penn Corp in the 1989 Championship tilt in Kimberly WI. With Guanella Brothers, “Chubb” was 11-4 courtesy his sharp-breaking rise ball, threw a no-hitter, struck out 32 batters in one 15inning game, and led all pitchers at the 1989 tournament, with 98 Ks in 51 innings. Chubb recalls the 1989 championship game with Guanella Brothers as he and his ‘mates clawed their way through the losers’ bracket to the finale. Earlier in the tournament he had ripped the nail off and tore open his index finger, but pitched the entire finale, eventually losing in extra innings to Penn Corp of Sioux City IA who successfully defended their 1988 title. Chubb then enjoyed four successful seasons as part of the Decatur IL Pride, and finished his ISC career in 1997 with Broken Bow NE. Chubb was named to ISC First-Team All World in three successive tournaments – 198990-91. He loved Northern California and sponsors Walt and Ray Guanella embraced Chubb and really made him feel at home. In total “Chubb” pitched 25 wins spanning his 13 ISC seasons. As a member of the New Zealand Black Sox, “Chubb” posted an impressive 12-1 ISF record in leading the Kiwis to medals in three consecutive World Championships - silver (1988 & 1992) and gold (1996). “Chubb” later served as New Zealand’s national pitching coach. In amassing additional ISF gold medals, Chubb has been inducted into both the New Zealand (2004) and ISF (2011) Halls of Fame. Chubb continues his involvement in softball, coaching kids and sharing his memories that have spanned many decades. 10 Hall of Fame 2016 Induction Breakfast Carrol Forbes Foundation The Carrol Forbes Foundation, established in 1995 in memory of ISC Founder Carrol Forbes (1909-1982) provides funding for youth development programs to “invest in the future” of this great sport of fastball. Funding and membership – In August 2005, the ISC Board of Directors supported a recommendation from the CFF Committee that for the immediate future, half of the annual earned income will be available the following year, to fund various projects designated for youth development. Eligible programs include local clinics fostering the aims and objectives of fastball for youth, the inaugural ISC Scholarship Program (annually offering one $500 college scholarship) and Carrol Forbes - 1909-1982 other projects that fall within the criteria. Eligible applicants include all organizations or students that are affiliated with or have a relationship with the ISC. Resource development for the CFF originates from donors who become “members” in the Forbes Foundation. Membership is open to individuals, families, teams, sponsors, businesses, organizations etc. Donors are eligible to receive IRS charitable tax receipts to offset income tax payable.
